In the fateful month of March 2000, shortly after opening a hugely successful show in New York that unveiled the more nefarious financial connections of Presidential candidate George W. Bush, the hugely ambitious Conceptual artist Mark Lombardi was found hanged in his studio, an apparent suicide. With museums lining up to buy his work, and the fame he had sought relentlessly at last within his reach, speculation about whether his death was suicide or murder has titillated the art world ever since. Lombardi was an enigma who was at once a compulsive truth-teller and a cunning player of the art game, a political operative and a stubborn independent, a serious artist and a Merry Prankster, a metaphysicist if not a scientist.Lombardi's spidery, elusive diagrams describing the evolution of the shadow-banking industry from a decades-old alliances between intelligence agencies, banking, government and organized crime, may have made him unique in art history as the only artist whose primary subject, the CIA, has turned around and studied him and his art work. Exhaustively researched, this is the first comprehensive biography of this immensely contradictory and brilliantly original artist.

Review Goldstone has impressively mined the artist’s archives and interviewed many who knew him, dutifully recording all their contradictory gossip.” KirkusThis isn’t a story about an artist. This is a story about something more deep and meaningful This book is very well-researched, it’s very detailed.” Forward ThinkingGoldstone is a deft guide to her subject, managing to write up all of his conspiracy research without making him sound like a loon, while also providing a thorough examination of the art scene in Houston and New York.” BookslutThe first major book about the artist ” NewsweekPatricia Goldstone has written the first comprehensive biography of the conceptual artist which is full of details from those who were closest to him: family, friends, colleagues, and past loves. Goldstone weaves US historical records into the course of the artist's life, citing scandals, political intrigue, and economic turbulence along the way.” Artnet

White The Author undertook a Herculean task by delivering a coherent, compelling read from deceased Artist Mark Lombardi's stylized block diagrams dealing with the netherworld of deep state financing. By integrating eye witness accounts, historical background and her own insight into the meaning and significance of the Artist's circles, ovals and boxes, Patricia Goldstone has succeeded in presenting an interesting read jam packed with revelations not just pertinent to readers interested in the art world, but to all proponents of representative government as well. For every American citizen who senses that today's government is "not quite right" but can't put their finger on the "why", Patricia's book is a "must read". INTERLOCK presents not only the backstory - but contains the key to unlocking the mysterious hidden forces that fund the election of and control today's constrained and oft compromised political "leaders".

Scintillating read By Misha Rabinovich This is a mind-blowing book which contains scintillating revelations about the role of Art in the 21st century. Despite being slightly verbose and a little bit redundant (perhaps the editing could have been a tad better), the book offers a wide-ranging but to the point account of Lombardi's motivations and techniques. The second half of the tome is actually a separate book featuring some in-depth investigative journalism around the corruption Lombardi showed through his drawing. For anyone interested in either conceptual and contemporary art, data visualization, or corruption and finance, this book is a real treasure trove. Thanks to Patricia Goldstone for her contribution to our understanding of these fascinating matters. My only regret is that Lombardi's drawings were not in the book due to the restrictions placed on them by the owners/gallerists. I think if Lombardi survived he would have been absolutely delighted by the work of Chelsea Manning, Jullian Assange, and Edward Snowden, and perhaps would have released digital versions of his drawings under a permissive license such as Creative Commons.

Read This Book By Amazon Customer In 2003, I viewed the traveling exhibit of Mark Lombardi’s work and it is fair to say that I walked into the exhibit with one world view and left with an entirely different one. The power of any conceptual or graphical representation is in the pruning away of extraneous information that leaves only that which is relevant and true. Lombardi did this exceptionally well. Twelve years later, Goldstone fills in the connective tissue of Lombardi’s art, deepening and expanding on Lombardi’s work with a meticulous and nuanced history of the shadow world economy, its powerful players, and the effect that it has wrought on our world. Goldstone has the rare ability to write knowledgeably about both the art world and world economics, and this information could not be more timely or relevant. Interlock is riveting reading- I could not turn away from the page.
