Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, , language: English, abstract: Background: Egypt has the highest prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the world. Screening of HCV during pregnancy is not routinely done in Egypt as many other countries, although pregnancy is an important period where screening of HCV infection is important owing to low immunity, the possibility of vertical transmission and later on horizontal transmission to the baby or other household contacts. Aim: to determine the seroprevalence of HCV antibodies (HCV-Ab) and risk factors associated with infection among pregnant women in Egypt. Patients and Method: 360 pregnant women visiting the health care units for routine antenatal care were tested using 3rd generation ELISA test for detection of HCV-Ab. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done for seropositive cases. Results: 6.1% (22/360) of pregnant women were HCV seropositive; of them only (9/20; 45%) had viraemia. Risk factors were their age, the age of their and the presence of chronic liver disease in the husband. Conclusion: The prevalence of HCV infection in pregnant women in Egypt appears to be lower than previously reported. The detected risk factors are old age of the pregnant women and their husbands and chronic liver disease in the husbands. None of the other known risk factors was found to be significantly associated with HCV infection in pregnant women.

The iconoclastic writer and director of the revered classic Withnail & I—"The funniest British film of all time" (Esquire)—returns to London in a decade-long examination of the most provocative murder investigation in British history, and finally solves the identity of the killer known as "Jack the Ripper."

In a literary high-wire act reminiscent of both Hunter S. Thompson and Errol Morris, Bruce Robinson offers a radical reinterpretation of Jack the Ripper, contending that he was not the madman of common legend, but the vile manifestation of the Victorian Age's moral bankruptcy.

In exploring the case of Jack the Ripper, Robison goes beyond the who that has obsessed countless others and focuses on the why. He asserts that any "gentlemen" that walked above the fetid gutters of London, the nineteenth century's most depraved city, often harbored proclivities both violent and taboo—yearnings that went entirely unpunished, especially if he also bore royal connections. The story of Jack the Ripper hinges on accounts that were printed and distributed throughout history by the same murderous miscreants who frequented the East End of her Majesty's London, wiping the fetid muck from their boots when they once again reached the marble floors of society's finest homes.

Supported by primary sources and illustrated with 75 to 100 black and white photographs, this breathtaking work of cultural history dismisses the theories of previous "Ripperologists." A Robinson persuasively makes clear with his unique brilliance, The Ripper was far from a poor resident of Whitechapel . . . he was a way of life.

They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper, by Bruce Robinson

Review “Robinson’s achievement isn’t in revealing the Ripper but in writing the most involving, audacious, and wonderfully bonkers book of the year.” (Irish Times)“A strange, mind-boggling mixture…. Anyone coming blind to the book might think it a collaboration between Dr. David Starkey and Johnny Rotten.” (Mail on Sunday)“Rarely has a book on Jack the Ripper been written with such visceral anger: anger at Jack, at ‘Ripperology’, at the establishment, and anger at the police cover-up that allowed one of the world’s most infamous serial killers to remain free…Robinson’s…research is undoubtedly impressive…. A bloody good read.” (The Guardian)

From the Back Cover

For over a hundred years, the mystery of Jack the Ripper has been a source of unparalleled fascination and horror, spawning an army of obsessive theorists and endless volumes purporting to finally reveal the identity of the brutal murderer who terrorized Victorian England.

But what if there was never really any mystery at all? What if the Ripper was always hiding in plain sight, deliberately leaving a trail of clues to his identity for anyone who cared to look, while cynically mocking those who were supposedly attempting to bring him to justice?

In They All Love Jack, the award-winning film director and screenwriter Bruce Robinson exposes the cover-up that enabled one of history's most notorious serial killers to remain at large. More than twelve years in the writing, this is no mere radical reinterpretation of the Jack the Ripper legend and an enthralling hunt for the killer. A literary high-wire act reminiscent of Tom Wolfe or Hunter S. Thompson, it is an expressionistic journey through the cesspools of late-Victorian society, a phantasmagoria of highly placed villains, hypocrites, and institutionalized corruption.

Polemic forensic investigation and panoramic portrait of an age, underpinned by deep scholarship and delivered in Robinson's inimitably vivid and scabrous prose, They All Love Jack is an absolutely riveting and unique book, demolishing the theories of generations of self-appointed experts—the so-called Ripperologists—to make clear, at last, who really did it; and, more important, how he managed to get away with it for so long.

About the Author

He is the author of The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman, Paranoia in the Launderette, and two books for children, The Obvious Elephant and Harold and the Duck, both illustrated by Sophie Windham. Cofield In the fall of 1888 Britain was transfixed by a series of gruesome murders in the Whitechapel district of London, a teeming slum packed with desperate people only a short cab or bus ride from some of the most elegant neighborhoods in what was then the wealthy capital of the greatest empire in the world. Prostitutes were murdered and eviscerated, their wombs and other body parts stolen, ambiguous references to "Juwes" were smeared on walls, and taunting messages were sent to the police by the murderer, a monster who called himself Jack the Ripper. It was terrifying, but then the murders stopped. After a few months it was assumed that the Ripper had committed suicide, and the matter was laid to rest, more or less, by the authorities. Over the years since there have been innumerable theories as to the Ripper's identity, ranging from the Heir Presumptive to the Throne all the way down to the most miserable denizens of the slums. Now Bruce Robinson, who is no historian but a talented screenwriter, director, and author, has produced a massive 800 page indictment not only of the real Ripper but of the secret society and corrupt Establishment that covered up his identity for its own protection. If Robinson is to be believed, and he's marshalled considerable evidence to back up his claims, Jack the Ripper was actually Michael Maybrick, a prominent composer and songwriter under the name Stephen Adams. Maybrick was also a Freemason who had risen high in the secret society's hierarchy. Being a Mason meant that he was connected with most of the prominent political and economic leadership of Victorian Britain, including the Prince of Wales. When the Ripper began his murder spree he was careful to leave clues and signs of his Masonic connections that Scotland Yard's leadership, who were also Freemasons, would recognize and take steps to obscure from public knowledge. This conspiracy spread into the highest levels of government as the Ripper kept killing, doing away with many more victims than is usually believed. Now Robinson's difficulty here is that the evidence against Maybrick, startling and compelling though much of it is, must remain circumstantial. But Robinson does a good job of explaining how Maybrick could have done it. His busy schedule as an entertainer kept him on the road throughout Britain and sometimes beyond, and at times his concerts coincided with dates and places from which the Ripper is known to have mailed some of his taunting letters to Scotland Yard. Some of those letters supposedly were sent from the United States, but Robinson has an easy explanation for how that could have been done as well (in those days a well dressed man in Liverpool or other British ports could stroll on board a ship that was about to depart, idly drop a letter in the ship's post box, and know that it would eventually reach its intended recipient with a New York or other American postmark.) Most intriguing of all, whether or not Maybrick was the Ripper, he was definitely connected with another sensational murder case at about the same time period. His brother James Maybrick, a wealthy man with an unfaithful wife, died from what appeared to be arsenic poisoning in 1889. Mrs. Maybrick was accused of his murder by her in-laws and then tried and found guilty by a biased judge and corrupt court system which was part of the same Establishment that protected the Ripper. They All Love Jack is an immensely complicated and often convoluted and repetitive read. Robinson found a lot of fascinating information about Freemasonry, the foibles and criminal acts of the British Establishment, the ins and outs of the late nineteenth century transportation and communication networks, the sad and sordid lives of the residents of Whitechapel and other British slums, and much more, and he packed it all int this one book. His writing is vivid and colorful in the extreme, not hesitating to drop numerous f-bombs and freely scatter a-, b-, c- and other words throughout his pages, while using inventive (and funny) nicknames to refer to some of his more prominent targets. There is a justifiable air of righteous indignation throughout the book that may explain some occasional mistakes here and there: he always incorrectly refers to the Prime Minister as "Viscount Lord Salisbury," for example. Some of the material he includes has only a tangential relationship to anything else: a long appendix about Charles Stewart Parnell (oddly headed "The Maybrick Mystery" in my copy) is apparently there just to provide further evidence of the corruption and crassness of the British Establishment.I'd call this book more "expose" than "history," so intent is Robinson on illuminating the shadows that hid not only the Ripper's identity but also a host of other criminals and sordid acts of judicial and political misconduct in Victorian Britain. It's a long and arduous read that will sometimes leave your head spinning trying to keep track of who was doing what to whom, but it's definitely revelatory. Michael Maybrick may or may not have been the Ripper, but he was definitely a curious man, as was the Society of which he was a part for so many years.

Perkin Being more accustomed to fictional imaginative twists of the infamous historic murder cases of Victorian England, in the beginning I simply came to They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper with a dark curiosity but a primed open mind to traipse down more practical alleyways of facts, and to finally explore the known evidence and be confronted with an intense determined new voice of historical research. Well this narrative certainly accomplished all that and I’m happy to say I received my full money’s worth of specifics concerning one (if not the most) baffling murder mysteries the world has ever known along with gritty investigative writing that well explained many (and presented some very convincing) theories but also found a devilishly amusing companion that had me laughing out loud and kept me eagerly leaned forward in my chair to hear more from night after night. I think it is safe to say, this is one of those books that depends entirely on finding the right reader for though. I can see where unwavering myths and beliefs collide with some surprising offensive disclosures in this intense work and some readers are sure to not like what they may see (or hear) in They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper. For this reader, I can’t honestly say I loved They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper but I did finish with my ears buzzing and mind twirling with lasting questions and respect for the research that was presented. Still after spending many nights with this impassioned title I also finished not entirely agreeing with this author’s long list of arguments and found the disconnected tone toward the victims, the confusing beginning context, fixation of certain clues and disappointing discarding of others (after a huge buildup) my main negatives with this book. That all fully aside, I would still readily recommend this book (Audible version) to anyone who is prepared to explore the facts of the historic cases and the many gaslit alleyways of: elaborate conspiracies, mass corruption and sabotage, ancient society links, secret symbols and breakdowns of polite society all surrounding the greatest mystery that no writer could ever have penned or will probably ever correctly solve, but they sure are welcome to try and this reader will appreciate the effort.

While making some interesting, and I believe valid points, Bruce Robinson's massive, 850 page *They all Love Jack: Busting the Ripper* at times reads more like a rant against what he sees as the hypocrisy of the Victorian establishment and modern-day Ripperology than a dispassionate examination of the 1888 Ripper murders with an eye to outing the Ripper. Robinson's disdain for the Victorian upper-class (from Queen Victoria on down), as well as the London Police in general, Sir Charles Warren in particular, literally drips from his pen. Nor do household names in Ripperology, such experts as Martin Fido, Stewart Evans, Melvin Harris, Keith Skinner, Philip Sugden, and even Donald Rumbelow, escape unscathed: though repeatedly saying that he has no beef with individual Ripperologists, Ripperology in general and several noted scholars of the JTR case in particular (especially the late Melvin Harris), come in for Robinson's ire, as he accuses them of blindly accepting the 1888 establishment verdict that the Metropolitan Police and Scotland Yard were doing everything in their power to catch "Jack." Apparently, modern Ripperology is continuing Sir Charles Warren’s original goal of obscuring the true identity of the Ripper. “Bro. Charles,” as Robinson calls him (every government or police official who was a Freemason Robinson likes to refer to as “Bro.”) and the police weren't interested in the truth. Why? Because "Jack" was not only a member of the Victorian London establishment but he was also a Freemason, and as most of the key players such as Warren, Coroner Bagster Philips, etc. were also Freemasons, they were bound by the bonds of Masonic fraternity and fidelity to the Craft to obscure his identity:"But justice wasn't what Warren was about. The last thing anyone wanted was an arrest, God forbid. It would have put an entire (and clandestine) ruling elite in the dock - its morals, its monarchy - and would possibly have had the cataclysmic side-effect of extirpating Freemasonry from the judiciary, the police and the royal family for all time. "Speaking of professional Rippeologists, Robinson says on pp. xii-xiii:“There’s a hybrid of Ripperology responsible for a dizzying variety of publications over the last half-century. By a process of attrition and endless industry, this coterie of authors has come to ‘own’ this history. They are self-appointed ‘experts’ and guardians of flat-earth thinking. Under constrictions of the herd (and by some by [sic] design) they have constructed a formiddale camouflage around this criminal. It is necessary to break through it before there is any possibility of discovering the identity of our Victorian psychopath.“Busting Jack entails an unraveling of the root-system that is way beyond the constipated strictures of Ripperology.”And on p. 16:"They think like Victorians, and they think like each other. If a supposed ‘authority’ said it, irresponsive of any possible agenda, they gobble it up like the universal quack remedy Fowler's Solution. . . . I can only speak for myself, but I decline to swallow such nostrums."On p. 156:"With one or two notable exceptions (and they know who they are), I’m reticent about having Ripperology accompany me further into this enquiry, and look forward to being free of it once I move beyond the ‘canonical’ murders. I tire of its blindness, constipated thinking and phony academia. I tire of its ‘shameless manipulation.’ Ripperology is like a gang of shagged-out seagulls in the wake of a phantom steamer. From time to time something might come over the side: ‘Quick, boys! Dive! Dive! It might be a “marginalia,” or even another Jew!’ Squabbling and counter-squabbling ensue, squawking from those known for it, those parsimonious smiles from those who know better, and the HMS *Canonical* ploughs on.”Robinson writes on p. 247:“For what it’s worth, I’ve been a professional writer for the best part of forty years. I’ve researched widely, from the Manhattan Project to the Khmer Rouge, but until confronted with Ripperolofgy I had never labored through such an expulsion of syncopated crap masquerading as history in all my life. It knows all the ‘facts,’ does Ripperology – knows the name of Elizabeth Stride’s home town in Sweden and the number of teeth in her upper jaw – but in respect of context, it hasn’t got a f*** clue.”These are just a small sampling of Robinson's assessments of professional Ripperology. As has been said in earlier reviews, there isn’t much of the disinterested scholar in Robinson’s book. Speaking of Warren’s removal of the “Goulston Street grafitto,” Robinson writes on p. 258:Anyone who believes Warren’s riot bull*** would probably have difficulty with the plots of Enid Blyton.”Metropolitan Police Officer Donald Swanson, author of the famed “Swanson marginalia”suggesting Kosminski as the Ripper, becomes “Donald ‘Shifty Nib’ Swanson."Of “Jack” himself, Robinson writes on p. xii:“There’s a perverse, almost heroic status that has evolved around this pr***, as though he were someone special, rather than the epitome of all that is cruel, and a God-d*** repugnance.”These are just a few examples of Robinson's colorful prose. He especially favors "arse" and the "F" word. We’re treated to such “inimitably vivid and scabrous prose” (as its described on the inside front dust-jacket) throughout the book, and while Robinson in my humble opinion has obviously studied the JTR case and makes some good points, challenging the accepted received wisdom at certain key places, such as regarding the Goulston Street grafitto and the issue of whether there were grapes in the hands of the murdered Elizabeth Stride, Robinson’s writing style and obvious problems with professional Ripperology may make it hard for many readers to take Robinson’s views seriously. Not to even mention the overall thesis of the book, his conspiracy-theory that the Ripper was an upper-class Freemason and that the officials of the Metropolitan Police and Scotland Yard (such as Sir Charles Warren and Donald Swanson), many of whom were also Freemasons, felt compelled to cover up, both that fact, and the true identity of the Ripper. So if you can wade through all of these issues, Robinson actually may make some valid points. The book’s subtitle, instead of “Busting Jack the Ripper,” should probably be “Busting the Victorian Establishment and Modern Ripperology.” In the meantime, I wouldn't throw out my copy of *The Jack the Ripper A to Z* just yet.

It combines some aspects of a memoir of Saint John's memories of his childhood, his famous CIA agent father E. Howard Hunt, and his less-famous CIA agent mother Dorothy, with quite a bit of historical research. Did Howard Hunt have a roll in CIA-sponsored Latin American political coups? That is in the historical record. While a reader might discount somewhat the author's childhood memories, it would be foolish to discount his memory of helping to dispose of evidence of his father's role in the Watergate break in. The author admits that lawyers (paid with Nixon cash) advised him to lie to a grand jury, which he did. He also confirms Dorothy's roll as a go-between, shuffling cash from the Nixon apparatus to the Watergate burglars to keep them quiet. On the other hand, anyone who wants to doubt Saint John's testimony can point to his admission that he began smoking marijuana at a young age. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to know what it might be like to have a CIA agent as a mother, or who is interested in the details of the Bay of Pigs operation, the Kennedy assassination, or Watergate and its aftermath.

Some reviewer is bound to give such important book one star and ignore its content altogether. "Dorothy" is one of the most important book you could ever read. It exposes a very ugly truth about the world that we live in, which has its roots in the JFK assassination. The undeniable ugly truth is within the pages of "Dorothy". Thank you Mr. Hunt for having the courage to bring to light what "they" did to your mother & for bringing her extraordinary story to the world.

Soulmaking is what happens when we live life deeply and learn by heart the lessons intended from all the conflicts and struggles we encounter. The whole world and all of life are the raw materials for soul-making. For over 30 years, psychiatrist and spiritual director, Troy Caldwell, has been a shepherd of souls in the making. He has walked with many through their crises, opportunities, loves, and deaths. The patterns arising from such dramas help us discover the deeper meaning that we all seek. Insights from depth psychology and spiritual formation enable us to better form our own souls. The practice of psychiatry offers in-depth glimpses of the human soul that few are privileged to see. This has led Dr. Caldwell on adventures that he shares with readers in this two-part book. Using both story and theory, he shows how God guides people to develop their inner lives in a manner that allows them to “glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” Many parallels in psychological theory with spirituality teachings are highlighted. In particular, Carl Jung’s theories of archetypes, individuation, and symbolism are used to illuminate and amplify traditional teaching in spiritual formation. The first part of Adventures in Soulmaking is subtitled Discovering the Kingdom Within. With storytelling and methodical instruction, a coherent model of the soul is developed and diagrammed. The spiritual journey and its stages of Purgative, Illuminative and Unitive are then linked to the model. By the end of this section, the reader has a firm foundation for understanding the practices suggested in the second part. The second part, titled Keys to the Open Heart, explores numerous important practices such as recollection, scripture meditation, lectio divina, and more. The book culminates in a number of mind-expanding stories of Jesus as he reveals himself in the lives of individuals and in archetypal literature. The theology of the book is orthodox with an evangelical flavor that will be appeal to both groups. Mental health professionals, spiritual directors, and pastors will also be interested audiences. Join Dr. Caldwell on this fascinating journey!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Feeling Called to a Deeper Relationship with God? By Doug Scott Dr. Caldwell’s new book, “Adventures in Soulmaking,” is a much needed and helpful guide for people interested in growing in the spiritual life. Though the book would be enjoyed by non-Christians, the primary audience seems to be Christians who are feeling called to deepen their faith and their relationship with God. Throughout the book he uses Scripture extensively and often illuminates familiar passages in new ways as he deftly interprets some verses from a Jungian viewpoint. St. Paul often uses the word, “flesh (sarx),” in his letters to his faith communities. Over the years an unfortunate dualistic ethos favored seeing “flesh” as meaning the body, and its needs, thus relegating it to secondary status and even an impediment to spiritual growth. Caldwell asserts that Paul’s “sarx” is actually his way of naming the shadow side of our own unconscious and that of the collective unconscious. What sets this book apart from other books that offer guidance in spiritual growth is how the writer is able to convey the breadth of his more than thirty years of experience in psychiatry, depth psychology, and spiritual direction, in meaningful, coherent, and colorful ways. For example, Dr. Caldwell illustrates that our souls communicate with us each night when we dream. He offers lucid examples of how dream analysis can help our conscious awareness learn the language of our unconscious which he calls, “Symbolese,” and how knowing and heeding this language can lead to movement through the traditional spiritual stages of the purgative, the illuminative, and the unitive.Dr. Caldwell draws upon Jungian thought and his training in spiritual direction to create a new map of the soul that illustrates the locations of the conscious, ego, the veil, the higher unconscious (nous), the lower unconscious (sarx), the still point, etc. This drawing helped me contextualize the many concepts that he puts forth. He treats the topic of archetypes in a way that I haven’t seen before as he not only describes them but gives an example of how he actually witnessed an archetype possess a patient of his. This story and the many other stories and examples he provides flesh out the theories behind potentially complicated concepts. One never feels that Dr. Caldwell is leading too far in advance of his students. In fact, one of the charms of the book is that he presents himself in a vulnerable manner. He offers his own dreams to the reader and is not afraid of revealing some of his own shadow. The second half of the book is particularly useful as he delves deeper into the “how-to’s” of spiritual growth. He offers an excellent treatment of the use of active imagination that allows one to reenter a dream from a relaxed state and engage with the different characters in the dream to learn what the soul wants to say. In my own counseling practice, I have introduced some of these techniques that I learned from this book with my clients to good effect. His chapter on the important topic of discernment is much needed especially as it touches on differentiating spirits. Dr. Caldwell’s presentation on discernment and throughout the rest of the book is highly Christic and instructs the reader on the efficacy of engaging Christ in new and exciting ways that might not have occurred to us otherwise.I highly recommend Adventures for anyone who is curious to see what the “next step” is in their faith journey. Dr. Caldwell leads from the three lenses of depth psychology, psychiatry, and spiritual direction and always from a place of deep humility. The reader will be touched by the obvious tenderness and care that he holds his subjects in the book: his former patients and directees. If a guide you can trust is a wounded healer, then Dr. Caldwell is a trustworthy presence and his book is a pathway to spiritual development that you can sink into and spend some time with.

Talmadge, M.D. First, a disclaimer: I have known the author for twenty years, have watched him work, and have benefited greatly from his teaching, his friendship, and his example as a spiritual director and psychiatrist. Troy and I trained together at The Anglican School of Theology, and we are both psychiatrists here in Dallas. The person who will enjoy Troy's work is that individual who sees life as a spiritual journey, someone who enjoys the wisdom of a physician steeped in Christianity and devoted to spiritual life. Troy and I both, for example, admire the work of Richard Rohr in the realm of psychology and spirituality. My own spiritual journey has actually been quite different from Troy's, and my take on theology is from a different perspective, but I find his thoughts inspiring, evocative, and at times simply fascinating. I had the pleasure of reading early drafts, where many of his ideas draw upon lectures and talks he has presented over the years. He has refined this work methodically, reflecting his deeply contemplative approach to spirituality. Troy's explorations of the soul have taken him across a wide range of territories, and this is work that reflects not only his devotion to Christ, but also his serious study of depth psychology and his limitless curiosity about what makes people tick. At a time when many authors write at the level of "pop" psychology, Troy has chosen to trust the reader as a companion on the path to God, in search of ultimate meanings, hungering as all mystics must hunger. I haven't written many reviews on Amazon, and I don't know whether any of this will be helpful to the prospective reader; but I do know that once you have read this book you will feel a friendship and a bond with the author, and that alone is worth your investment.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I am sorry to say that the book is a disappointment. It is a very heady book By Amazon Customer When I saw the book Adventures in Soulmaking by Troy Caldwell, M.D., and read the description, I got excited. A book combining spiritual direction and depth psychology – wow! I am a spiritual director and a directee. In addition, I see a Jungian analyst twice a month. So I was looking forward to this book that integrates these two disciplines, both for me in my own inner work and also for insights on how to guide directees in integrating the spiritual and psychological in their own lives.I am sorry to say that the book is a disappointment. It is a very heady book, heavily intellectualized. That in itself is not an issue; however, it is not what I expected, nor is it what I usually find helpful in penetrating my soul. In addition, the way the material is presented feels mostly disjointed. I found it hard to dwell in the deeper points Caldwell tries to make. There are moments of illumination in which I felt a deep resonance and wanted more, such as the section on nous – the spiritual mind. Most of the book, though, is simply a recounting of his and other people’s dreams and stories without making a strong connection for how readers might find this rich depth in their own lives. One of the things I really like about the book: how God uses dreams and symbols to form and guide us. While this is something I already know, I was kind of amazed to read some of the stories and how Caldwell and his clients unpacked dreams to reveal deep and profound truths. Jesse’s story of how Jesus miraculously heals a part of her that seemed immune to healing work is especially powerful and profound – and it gives me hope for my own hopeless places.Caldwell’s exploration of archetypes is also quite useful. It shed new light onto my own Jungian work, especially when he writes about how an archetype might “arise and threaten to possess your ego. When that happens, you feel controlled by an outside force … It feels like a threatened loss of identity…” (p. 110). I have felt this, and the way Caldwell frames it is helpful. In a number of places, Caldwell touches on potentially transformative topics, but somehow comes short of their transformative power. Inner healing prayer is one of the areas where I wanted more. I wanted an exploration of the power of inner healing prayer within the context of depth psychology, and how it might transform us. That is not what this book offers. In most cases, Caldwell doesn't seem to be able to turn the specific into general concepts that take the reader to a deeper level. The second part of the book is largely more fruitful than the first. The chapter on discernment has some useful guidance, especially in considering whether dreams, imagery, visions are from God; and what to do if one confronts what may be spiritually evil. There are spiritual practices that he describes that can grow our souls and open us more fully into the Holy. This is a strength of the book, the entryway into contemplative practices such as lectio divina, active imagination (which I especially found helpful), journaling, and others. Also, the book’s appendix on how to interpret dreams will be a useful framework for many. All very practical information, even though the soul connection is not as strong as it could be; not as strong as I want it to be.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the author and/or publisher through the Speakeasy blogging book review network. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR,Part 255.

The body, of both the patient and the analyst, is increasingly a focus of attention in contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice, especially from a relational perspective. There is a renewed regard for the understanding of embodied experience and sexuality as essential to human vitality. However, most of the existing literature has been written by analysts with no formal training in body-centered work. In this book William Cornell draws on his experience as a body-centered psychotherapist to offer an informed blend of the two traditions, to allow psychoanalysts a deep understanding, in psychoanalytic language, of how to work with the body as an ally.

The primary focus of Somatic Experience in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy situates systematic attention to somatic experience and direct body-level intervention in the practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. It provides a close reading of the work of Wilhelm Reich, repositioning his work within a contemporary psychoanalytic frame and re-presents Winnicott’s work with a particular emphasis on the somatic foundations of his theories. William Cornell includes vivid and detailed case vignettes including accounts of his own bodily experience to fully illustrate a range of somatic attention and intervention that include verbal description of sensate experience, exploratory movement and direct physical contact.

Drawing on relevant theory and significant clinical material, Somatic Experience in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy will allow psychoanalysts an understanding of how to work with the body in their clinical practice. It will bring a fresh perspective on psychoanalytic thinking to body-centred psychotherapy where somatic experience is seen as an ally to psychic and interpersonal growth. This book will be essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychodynamically oriented psychotherapists, transactional analysts, body-centred psychotherapists, Gestalt therapists, counsellors and students.

William Cornell maintains an independent private practice of psychotherapy and consultation in Pittsburgh, PA. He has devoted 40 years to the study and integration of psychoanalysis, neo-Reichian body therapy and transactional analysis. He is a Training and Supervising Transactional Analyst and has established an international reputation for his teaching and consultation.

Somatic Experience in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy: In the expressive language of the living (Relational Perspectives Book Series), by William F Cornell

Review

Writing about 'body work'--the way a body knows something long before it could ever be 'put' into speech; indeed even if this were an imagined possibility--is as hazardous as writing about music. If you know a work of music, as in if you know the idiom of body speech, then this is not a problem. Only a few psychoanalysts have pressed ahead with a near impossible task. Reich--the only genius in psychoanalysis who understood the foundations of character--was one of them In his own seemingly modest way, William Cornell--known over decades as a man of great wisdom about body knowledge and how the analyst can speak to this--has finally committed himself to paper. His accomplishment, performed in a highly personal narrative and yet within a deeply ordered imperative is not simply unique: it is a one off. There will never be another work even remotely like this. A book of unsparing honesty and deeply devoted to the psychoanalytical project. - Christopher Bollas

This is a brilliant, bold and ground-breaking book. Cornell urges psychoanalytic clinicians to deepen and extend their work by paying closer attention to their patients’ bodily experience, thus enabling them to find something beyond a secure base which he calls a `vital’ base . He also brings passion and scholarship to the study of theory and the book achieves a major integration of, and development in, psychoanalytic theory. It is a great read, too. Anne Alvarez, PhD MACP. Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist.

Powerful and Evocative By AmityShepherd This extremely well written and accessible treatise draws from a variety of current and historical sources within the psychological and psychiatric communities. Notes from Cornell's long clinical practice illuminate the concepts being discussed. This work not only shows the evolution (or not) in the thinking and practice of analysts and therapists within both the psychoanalytic and broader psychotheraputic communities, it explores the growth and depth of the work being done by Cornell in his private practice.

By Michael Mervosh This is a very comprehensive and multifaceted collection of clinical material. Bill Cornell integrates the passionate and at times provocative work with the body with the relational components of analytic reflection and engagement, traveling along a continuum from Reich to Winnicott. He reminds us that we are essentially enfleshed beings; he helps clinicians to deepen their understanding and appreciation for how our embodied experiences provide us with a fundamental means for both knowing one's self and having enlivening connections with others.I find his writing to be both personally revealing and clinically thorough, and his capacity to compare and contrast theoretical perspectives among various body-centered therapies and psychoanalytic approaches is invaluable. I particularly find his chapters on Erotic Vitality and Disturbance, Rough and Tumble, and The Search for Desire to most informative and applicable to my own practice.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding By Jimena Galfaso Profound and enlightening exploration on the complex and rich process of working with the body in the therapeutic relationship. A must read for any kind of therapist and client.

By Photosamurai Save your money. If you must buy one of these buy only one of the painter you want to look at. It may seem that there are multiple books of the same painter, but they all have the same pictures. There is no dialogue or descriptions. Just the painting and the title. You'll get more out of a library book and it won't cost you a thing. I got all of mine free through Amazon prime for free. It would have been a ripoff had I paid any money.Read the other one star. I question it because there is no content, no mispellings because it's just a collection of paintings and their titles.

Definitely more than just "Marilyn" 1967 By Don Kidwell I acquired a new found appreciation for Andy Warhol having viewed these 24 paintings which was exactly the thing I was looking for! "Marilyn" 1967 and the Campbell soup cans were all I had really known of his work earlier, but having seen "Brooklyn Bridge" "Diamond Dust Shoes" "Butterflies"and "Basket of flowers" I have to say I really like his work now. Nicely done and good selections!

Only collect one cover for each painter because the content is the same By Modupe Hendricks I have collected over 20 different Twenty-Four Andy Warhol's Paintings (Collection) for Kids, the covers were different but the inside pictures were in the exact same order. At least each picture has a name but no other information. I used kindle from the Microsoft store to look at the pictures, the pictures are in color. Adults would enjoy as well as students.

2015 Reprint of the 1918 edition. Our edition reproduces the numerous illustrations, maps and charts in full size, so that all text is legible. Larkin believed that God laid it on his heart to prepare a work on Dispensational Truth (or God's Plan and Purpose in the Ages), illustrated with many maps, charts and descriptive matter. After more than three years efforts, mostly designing and drawing the charts and illustrations, the book was extremely well received in 1918 and remains to this day a much used spiritual guide. As a result of its success and wide circulation, the first edition was soon sold out, and subsequently followed by a second edition, and later, with a revised edition.

I am so glad to see this book in a cheaper paperback as it has been very expensive in the past over 50 years and difficult to get. I paid fifty dollars for my copy in 1976.This book was written around 1917 by Clarence Larkin. It is filled with easy to use graphs as well as the explaination of the graph. It is an excellent book to use for reference as a teaching aid or just for private Bible study. It is very through teaching of the dispensational ages as the Bible sets them out. Knowing the seven ages in the Bible is the "Key" to unlocking many truths and placing them into proper order. Example; Age of innocents, conscience, human government, age of law , age of grace, which is the age we are living in at this present time. The ages explain how God is dealing with man in each age and why; This book is a must have for any serious Bible student. I have notice that the more recent graphs on the dispensation are all taken from Mr Larkins works.Mr Larkin didn't just do graphs but is a great Bible Student himself. His teaching is excellent. His insite can only be from our Dear Savior Himself. If you can afford the Hardback I highly recommend it as the paperback has smaller print and not as easy to read. My vision is poor therefore I prefer to larger print.

I did want to keep his copy too long, so I purchased my own copy. I got the paperback copy. The printers reduced the pages in the portrait size book and turned the book vertically. The writings and charts and the pictures were significantly reduced and hard to read. So I am waiting for the original book to come down from it's price and I will purchase it. The book is excellent! But this one turned vertical was not.

Clarence Larkin was a man ahead of his time. God gave him great insight into the Bible and prophecy. His drawings are unparalleled. You won't be disappointed in this book. The paperback edition is priced reasonable. If you get the same in hardback cover it will cost about $43. The Estate of Clarence Larkin sells the charts in a larger format if you find them hard to read. The charts are inexpensive. Just google "Clarence Larkin Estate" and you will find the site. I have a magnifying glass that helps me and I am also an older person with trouble with my eyesight. For most people there would be no problem. My husband has been studying these charts and reading Clarence Larkin books for 30 yrs. He has also had a Bible Study where he taught this material. I highly recommend this book.
