Soulmaking is what happens when we live life deeply and learn by heart the lessons intended from all the conflicts and struggles we encounter. The whole world and all of life are the raw materials for soul-making. For over 30 years, psychiatrist and spiritual director, Troy Caldwell, has been a shepherd of souls in the making. He has walked with many through their crises, opportunities, loves, and deaths. The patterns arising from such dramas help us discover the deeper meaning that we all seek. Insights from depth psychology and spiritual formation enable us to better form our own souls. The practice of psychiatry offers in-depth glimpses of the human soul that few are privileged to see. This has led Dr. Caldwell on adventures that he shares with readers in this two-part book. Using both story and theory, he shows how God guides people to develop their inner lives in a manner that allows them to “glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” Many parallels in psychological theory with spirituality teachings are highlighted. In particular, Carl Jung’s theories of archetypes, individuation, and symbolism are used to illuminate and amplify traditional teaching in spiritual formation. The first part of Adventures in Soulmaking is subtitled Discovering the Kingdom Within. With storytelling and methodical instruction, a coherent model of the soul is developed and diagrammed. The spiritual journey and its stages of Purgative, Illuminative and Unitive are then linked to the model. By the end of this section, the reader has a firm foundation for understanding the practices suggested in the second part. The second part, titled Keys to the Open Heart, explores numerous important practices such as recollection, scripture meditation, lectio divina, and more. The book culminates in a number of mind-expanding stories of Jesus as he reveals himself in the lives of individuals and in archetypal literature. The theology of the book is orthodox with an evangelical flavor that will be appeal to both groups. Mental health professionals, spiritual directors, and pastors will also be interested audiences. Join Dr. Caldwell on this fascinating journey!

By Doug Scott Dr. Caldwell’s new book, “Adventures in Soulmaking,” is a much needed and helpful guide for people interested in growing in the spiritual life. Though the book would be enjoyed by non-Christians, the primary audience seems to be Christians who are feeling called to deepen their faith and their relationship with God. Throughout the book he uses Scripture extensively and often illuminates familiar passages in new ways as he deftly interprets some verses from a Jungian viewpoint. St. Paul often uses the word, “flesh (sarx),” in his letters to his faith communities. Over the years an unfortunate dualistic ethos favored seeing “flesh” as meaning the body, and its needs, thus relegating it to secondary status and even an impediment to spiritual growth. Caldwell asserts that Paul’s “sarx” is actually his way of naming the shadow side of our own unconscious and that of the collective unconscious. What sets this book apart from other books that offer guidance in spiritual growth is how the writer is able to convey the breadth of his more than thirty years of experience in psychiatry, depth psychology, and spiritual direction, in meaningful, coherent, and colorful ways. For example, Dr. Caldwell illustrates that our souls communicate with us each night when we dream. He offers lucid examples of how dream analysis can help our conscious awareness learn the language of our unconscious which he calls, “Symbolese,” and how knowing and heeding this language can lead to movement through the traditional spiritual stages of the purgative, the illuminative, and the unitive.Dr. Caldwell draws upon Jungian thought and his training in spiritual direction to create a new map of the soul that illustrates the locations of the conscious, ego, the veil, the higher unconscious (nous), the lower unconscious (sarx), the still point, etc. This drawing helped me contextualize the many concepts that he puts forth. He treats the topic of archetypes in a way that I haven’t seen before as he not only describes them but gives an example of how he actually witnessed an archetype possess a patient of his. This story and the many other stories and examples he provides flesh out the theories behind potentially complicated concepts. One never feels that Dr. Caldwell is leading too far in advance of his students. In fact, one of the charms of the book is that he presents himself in a vulnerable manner. He offers his own dreams to the reader and is not afraid of revealing some of his own shadow. The second half of the book is particularly useful as he delves deeper into the “how-to’s” of spiritual growth. He offers an excellent treatment of the use of active imagination that allows one to reenter a dream from a relaxed state and engage with the different characters in the dream to learn what the soul wants to say. In my own counseling practice, I have introduced some of these techniques that I learned from this book with my clients to good effect. His chapter on the important topic of discernment is much needed especially as it touches on differentiating spirits. Dr. Caldwell’s presentation on discernment and throughout the rest of the book is highly Christic and instructs the reader on the efficacy of engaging Christ in new and exciting ways that might not have occurred to us otherwise.I highly recommend Adventures for anyone who is curious to see what the “next step” is in their faith journey. Dr. Caldwell leads from the three lenses of depth psychology, psychiatry, and spiritual direction and always from a place of deep humility. The reader will be touched by the obvious tenderness and care that he holds his subjects in the book: his former patients and directees. If a guide you can trust is a wounded healer, then Dr. Caldwell is a trustworthy presence and his book is a pathway to spiritual development that you can sink into and spend some time with.

Talmadge, M.D. First, a disclaimer: I have known the author for twenty years, have watched him work, and have benefited greatly from his teaching, his friendship, and his example as a spiritual director and psychiatrist. Troy and I trained together at The Anglican School of Theology, and we are both psychiatrists here in Dallas. The person who will enjoy Troy's work is that individual who sees life as a spiritual journey, someone who enjoys the wisdom of a physician steeped in Christianity and devoted to spiritual life. Troy and I both, for example, admire the work of Richard Rohr in the realm of psychology and spirituality. My own spiritual journey has actually been quite different from Troy's, and my take on theology is from a different perspective, but I find his thoughts inspiring, evocative, and at times simply fascinating. I had the pleasure of reading early drafts, where many of his ideas draw upon lectures and talks he has presented over the years. He has refined this work methodically, reflecting his deeply contemplative approach to spirituality. Troy's explorations of the soul have taken him across a wide range of territories, and this is work that reflects not only his devotion to Christ, but also his serious study of depth psychology and his limitless curiosity about what makes people tick. At a time when many authors write at the level of "pop" psychology, Troy has chosen to trust the reader as a companion on the path to God, in search of ultimate meanings, hungering as all mystics must hunger. I haven't written many reviews on Amazon, and I don't know whether any of this will be helpful to the prospective reader; but I do know that once you have read this book you will feel a friendship and a bond with the author, and that alone is worth your investment.

It is a very heady book By Amazon Customer When I saw the book Adventures in Soulmaking by Troy Caldwell, M.D., and read the description, I got excited. A book combining spiritual direction and depth psychology – wow! I am a spiritual director and a directee. In addition, I see a Jungian analyst twice a month. So I was looking forward to this book that integrates these two disciplines, both for me in my own inner work and also for insights on how to guide directees in integrating the spiritual and psychological in their own lives.I am sorry to say that the book is a disappointment. It is a very heady book, heavily intellectualized. That in itself is not an issue; however, it is not what I expected, nor is it what I usually find helpful in penetrating my soul. In addition, the way the material is presented feels mostly disjointed. I found it hard to dwell in the deeper points Caldwell tries to make. There are moments of illumination in which I felt a deep resonance and wanted more, such as the section on nous – the spiritual mind. Most of the book, though, is simply a recounting of his and other people’s dreams and stories without making a strong connection for how readers might find this rich depth in their own lives. One of the things I really like about the book: how God uses dreams and symbols to form and guide us. While this is something I already know, I was kind of amazed to read some of the stories and how Caldwell and his clients unpacked dreams to reveal deep and profound truths. Jesse’s story of how Jesus miraculously heals a part of her that seemed immune to healing work is especially powerful and profound – and it gives me hope for my own hopeless places.Caldwell’s exploration of archetypes is also quite useful. It shed new light onto my own Jungian work, especially when he writes about how an archetype might “arise and threaten to possess your ego. When that happens, you feel controlled by an outside force … It feels like a threatened loss of identity…” (p. 110). I have felt this, and the way Caldwell frames it is helpful. In a number of places, Caldwell touches on potentially transformative topics, but somehow comes short of their transformative power. Inner healing prayer is one of the areas where I wanted more. I wanted an exploration of the power of inner healing prayer within the context of depth psychology, and how it might transform us. That is not what this book offers. In most cases, Caldwell doesn't seem to be able to turn the specific into general concepts that take the reader to a deeper level. The second part of the book is largely more fruitful than the first. The chapter on discernment has some useful guidance, especially in considering whether dreams, imagery, visions are from God; and what to do if one confronts what may be spiritually evil. There are spiritual practices that he describes that can grow our souls and open us more fully into the Holy. This is a strength of the book, the entryway into contemplative practices such as lectio divina, active imagination (which I especially found helpful), journaling, and others. Also, the book’s appendix on how to interpret dreams will be a useful framework for many. All very practical information, even though the soul connection is not as strong as it could be; not as strong as I want it to be.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the author and/or publisher through the Speakeasy blogging book review network. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR,Part 255.
