From the Author In the simplest of words, I'm trying in this little novella, Manuela Blayne, to evoke some thought about how other people feel inside. For example, I'm trying to paint pictures of how it feels to be African-American and how it feels to be saturated in white people's prejudices in the early 1900's.From Chapter Two:Manuela's grandmother has just had a grand mal seizure. Papa Sam helps her walk back to the wagon. Trudy's little brother is shocked that Sam, a white man, is touching an African-American woman. Placing her foot in front of her as though she had to tell it what to do, she tried to walk. First she veered to the left and then to the right. Papa Sam and Herschel took her arms and led her.Buddy, tugging at Billy's shoulder, spoke too loud as usual. "Do you see what Papa's doing? Can you believe it?"

"Morning, Herschel."When Herschel removed his hat, he showed us a frowning face. "Morning, Mr. Sam." He lowered his head and shook it like he was over-come with despair. "Nettie's done wandered off again. I need y'all's help. We got to go look for her.""Trudy." Bailey, my sweet little step-sister, pulled my pigtail. "Let me tell you something.""Shh." I didn't want Papa Sam to think we'd be too noisy or dis-respectful, so I tried to shush the whispering.Bailey threw her arms around my head. "Listen, Trudy.""What?" Some horrible thing could happen to her, like a coyote could eat her up alive.In less time than it would take a rooster to run across the yard, we loaded into Herschel's wagon, and Papa Sam sat cross-legged in the middle of us. Herschel Blayne took up the whole front seat of the wagon. His belly hung so low between his legs he could barely sit. His back had no choice except to sway.

It addresses the difficult issues of racial violence, rape and the lack of medical knowledge in the rural South in 1910 through the eyes of a perceptive 12-year-old girl. The writer is able to suggest frightening, violent episodes without depicting every graphic detail; our imagination fills in the rest. The book is hard to put down!

By Christie Underwood This extremely well-written story is a must read for anyone who enjoyed the Dream Bucket by Mary Cheatham. The author shows great depth by being able to write this sequel but maintain its readability as a stand alone book. The story encompasses the social injustice of the times as well as a broad array of emotions. Compassion, sorrow, serenity and love are central to the story. I am eager to see what the author has in store for us next following Manuela Blayne. I am thirsty for what develops in the lives of Trudy and Will.
