8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Interesting book By Trish Vidal But it's available for free in MOBI version for kindle on NASA's site, also on ePub and pdf. Don't bother paying $3 for it, just go on the NASA site and search for ebooks and the first link will take you there.

I just finished reading the Kindle edition that my brother sent me, but when I went to find it here on Amazon, so as to write this review, I'm told that there is no Kindle edition! Strange. Especially for a well-thought-out and provocative series of essays concentrating on EXTRA-terrestrial intelligence. Let's be clear here -- these are serious attempts at discerning what, where, when, and how any messages might be perceived and interpreted, going EITHER WAY. I was especially intrigued by the archaeological and anthropological aspects, being an archaeologist (and therefore, an anthropologist) myself. I cannot tell you how much this book disturbed me (in a good way). Having grown up with science fiction always in the household, and being a Star Trek fan and Buddhist student, as well as a follower of John C. Lilly's experiments with dolphins, the whole concept of OTHER was always there. Like Artificial Intelligence (AI), another matter entirely [but then again, maybe not, as it was pointed out that this is one serious possible mode of Contact], the probability of communication with other worlds (or civilizations) is an issue of when, not if. So we might as well prepare as best we can for it. That's what this book does, by some of the best minds to ever attempt it. Like AI, this could be both a boon or a bane, and the likelihood that we humans will muck it up rather than adapt to its most harmonious conclusions is an overriding factor. I highly, and I mean HIGHLY recommend that serious minds (and even a few politicians) take the effort to read and realize the implications. To be honest, I don't think it'll be a good thing for mankind in the short run, but if we get over the initial hurdles and show ourselves to be worthy, it may prove to be a god-send (rather than a God's end). Very thought-provoking. Exo-ethnobiology may be the next big scientific endeavor. Good luck, mankind...

Excellent Collection By Michael Glaviano This is a collection of articles by people who have been involved with the SETI program in its various incarnations. I found the individual articles interesting, albeit a bit formal on occasion. That (slight) criticism aside, I think the collection is wonderful. It provides so much to think about, both in its recounting of the history of SETI and in the merger of thoughts well outside the realm of the physical sciences.
