In the middle decades of the nineteenth century Jeremiah G. Hamilton was a well-known figure on Wall Street. Cornelius Vanderbilt, America's first tycoon, came to respect, grudgingly, his one-time opponent. The day after Vanderbilt's death on January 4, 1877, an almost full-page obituary on the front of the National Republican acknowledged that, in the context of his Wall Street share transactions, "There was only one man who ever fought the Commodore to the end, and that was Jeremiah Hamilton."
What Vanderbilt's obituary failed to mention, perhaps as contemporaries already knew it well, was that Hamilton was African American. Hamilton, although his origins were lowly, possibly slave, was reportedly the richest colored man in the United States, possessing a fortune of $2 million, or in excess of two hundred and $50 million in today's currency.
In Prince of Darkness, a groundbreaking and vivid account, eminent historian Shane White reveals the larger than life story of a man who defied every convention of his time. He wheeled and dealed in the lily white business world, he married a white woman, he bought a mansion in rural New Jersey, he owned railroad stock on trains he was not legally allowed to ride, and generally set his white contemporaries teeth on edge when he wasn't just plain outsmarting them. About the Author SHANE WHITE is the Challis Professor of History and an Australian Professorial Fellow in the History Department at the University of Sydney specializing in African-American history. He has authored or co-authored five books, including Playing the Numbers, and collaborated in the construction of the website Digital Harlem. Each project has won at least one important prize for excellence from institutions as varied as the American Historical Association and the American Library Association. He lives in Sydney, Australia.

Hamilton. That this man was as successful as his contemporaries in amassing a fortune is remarkable. But, what is even more so, is that, he succeeded as a mulatto in a white man's world.Frankly, I found the summary captivating and intriguing. I hadn't known about Hamilton and wouldn't have thought to read about him if it were not for this literary tease. If only White's writing could be as tempting as his book's summary. I double-checked what I'd ordered, thinking I must have made a mistake and ordered a textbook, not a biography or memoir. Sadly, I wasn't mistaken. This reads pedantically and puts me to sleep. Yes, the subject matter is fascinating, but the telling of it is not. The author is an esteemed professor and perhaps I am simply too far beneath him intellectually to appreciate his writing. Unless you enjoy textbook biographies, take a pass on this one.

Jeremiah Hamilton was Wall Street's first millionaire in the 1850s. That he could achieve this feat when slavery was still deeply ingrained in the country and where black people even when they were not enslaved were often discriminated against is almost a miracle.Shane White tells us the story of how Hamilton rose from an unlikely provenance as a black man in pre Civil War America. Even then he had shrewd entrepreneurial instincts and was caught shipping counterfeit coins to Haiti. Escaping punishment and rising through the hard-scrabble existence of a determined young man, Hamilton amassed a fortune of $2 million (more than $40 million in today's currency) through a variety of business ventures, ranging from railroads to insurance to real estate. White details well the meteoric rise of this unlikely character who charmed his way into the world of wealth white New Yorkers. However the author also does not ignore Hamilton's flaws, noting how he unscrupulously made money off the victims of fire. Perhaps his most monumental feud was with business tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt with whom he clashed over partial ownership of a rival railroad - ironically one on which black people could travel in parts of the country.The book is also full of fantastic stories, none more so than of the time when a lynch mob during the Draft Riots of the 1860s descended upon Hamilton's house. Hamilton's wife - a white women whose marriage to him raised eyebrows and kept him insulated only because of his wealth - somehow convinced the mob that her husband was not home and who admirably sent the men away with trinkets and other valuable items in the form of appeasement.Jeremiah Hamilton was a very unlikely character in a time of great racial, social and economic upheaval and this book is the first full length biography of him that I have come across. I agree with the previous reviewer that the writing is a bit dry, especially relative to the unique nature of the story, but the story itself is so remarkable and unlikely that I believe the writing to be a relatively minor blemish. Worth reading.

Heads I win, tails you lose By David Wineberg This stunning portrayal of life in 1800s New York, and in particular the trials and tribulations of a black/mulatto broker, is a rude awakening. It is rude because New Yorkers see themselves as fair and evenhanded, part of an almost unique melting pot, where anyone can play if they pay. Not so in the 1800s, especially if your hair was “wooly” and your skin dark. New Yorkers compared unfavorably to southerners in their snotty mistreatment of other races. For an intelligent, hustling nonwhite, the battle in the financial marketplace was multiplied by the prejudice of the courts and threats in the streets. Jeremiah Hamilton overcame all of it to be the first American millionaire who wasn’t white. He found the angles, timed his moves and leveraged everything and everyone. He made enemies by the carload.And money.Hamilton bullied his way onto Wall St. He was as clever, sharp and underhanded as any of his white counterparts. He made a living claiming insurance for losses, mostly at sea, and mostly in court. He battled prejudiced judges and juries, favoritism among whites, and a clearly uneven playing field. When attacked in person, in court or in print, he always hit back harder, which shocked white New York. He totally distanced himself from nonwhites, had his own circle of white friends, married a white woman, and disported himself as a wealthy white. Any one of which could have cost him his life.The great achievement of Prince of Darkness is Shane White’s ceaseless digging. Reading the many daily newspapers of Hamilton’s lifespan, the court records, government records, and following all kinds of slim leads, he draws in parallel characters and stories for context. His research stretches to the books on Hamilton’s shelf, listed in his bankruptcy filing, and those on his library card, some 250 more. White paints a remarkable and memorable picture of someone who lived the moment and lived it large. White interjects himself from time to time, explaining the lengths he had to go, the assumptions and the choices he had to make along the way. The effect is to make the reader a partner, giving us the choices made of uncertainty, though White tells us which way he leans.What White never reveals is how on earth he ever even discovered the existence of Jeremiah Hamilton. An Australian history professor in Sydney is not the most likely to stumble across the obscure 19th century independent Wall Street broker. This is a man who left no photos, no portraits, no documents or ledgers, and who was forgotten as soon as he left the scene in 1875. There are no books that profile him, no documentaries celebrating him, and no institutes honoring him. It makes this book a real achievement.David Wineberg

Around February 20th of this year, ‘they’ told me to write this book. I was to write it quickly and to stay focused on two particular subjects. Two weeks into my writing I was told the deadline was the weekend of March 22nd, which I accomplished. They also said, “We’re almost out of time”, and, "There are millions who need to know what you're writing". I did what I was told. I wrote this book in one month. Uncommon? Not necessarily. I believe these types of things are happening all over our planet at this time. I am a product of Western civilization but seemed to have been set on a different path even as a young child. I preferred the company of adults and their serious conversations to that of my childhood peers and their play. I questioned what I was taught rather than accepting everything at face-value. When my teenage classmates were excitedly planning their careers, I chose the traditional path of housewife and mother, though I was far from being an ordinary wife and mother. Even though I was born after WWII, into a generation that enjoyed prosperity and endless possibilities, I preferred to live a life-style as my ancestors had. I knew also there was a presence in my life that was a constant, which I never feared, but felt instead a significant degree of safety and security. This presence seemed to nudge me towards making better decisions and helped me notice things I wouldn’t have otherwise. I didn’t think about them when I was young, just taking their constant presence for granted. They guided me; they taught me…they helped me make sense of things. I took them for granted. I didn’t know what it was like to not have them. They have always been with me. I had never even considered wondering who they were. That all changed when I reached a crisis point in my life, at the age of fifty-two. Because I had stripped from me all I had relied on for strength in my life up to this point, I asked of the Universe in my moment of agony, three key questions- 1. Who am I? 2. What is my purpose? 3. If there is a God, who is he? I received answers I never anticipated over the following few short years. Answers which also revealed who they are and my connectedness to them. They are referred to by numerous titles such as, Guardians, Watchers, Holy Spirit, Angels, ETs, Spirit Guides, and others, and they are a very real presence in millions of people’s lives, but not something spoken of- or hardly ever. I also learned via synchronicities and coincidences, the ancient history of our planet and who our true ancestors are. I am one person and this is my story- a story that might be unique to just me, but might also be to millions of others. I am only asking that people read my accounts of how things were revealed to me with an open mind, for I realize fully there are as many paths as there are people. It is my hope that people will decide to ask their own questions, for that’s all it takes to get answers. My life has been rich and full because of their presence. I have always trusted I’ll be taken care of. I know they somehow inform me of everything I need to know, even when I am not aware of any need to know. Maybe if enough of us seek answers, we can open up a global dialogue, and discover who we are and what our place is in the cosmos- find peace within ourselves, and ultimately with our entire planet.

I was married for thirty years, had fourteen children, twelve whom are living, and now have twenty-one grandchildren. Because of this decision, rather than pursuing a career as most of my peers were electing to do, I chose to focus on raising children in a loving environment and creating a safe-haven for them and my husband. I became adept at the skills my Mother and my Grandmother practiced such as gardening and preserving; sewing, knitting and crocheting; carpentry, painting and upholstery; and animal husbandry. I also loved reading and writing, along with the arts, especially pottery, painting and photography. My environment has always been my priority as I have felt this is the basic decision we make in our determination of how we want to live our lives, and have always used interior design, landscaping, and the use of art and a multitude of plants, to create my own piece of heaven on earth. I became an avid reader in my early teens and began to write when my life as a mother began to wind down when I was in my fifties. I have felt for a long time, there is a rich source of knowledge in the endless possibilities of unlimited topics, that’s not being tapped into, in the minds and hearts of all the billions of women who fall under the categories of Housewife and Mother. I believe the time has come for women to come forward and have their voices be heard. We are experienced, we are focused and unrelenting at times, and we are intelligent. We also have experienced much from very unusual perspectives. Even though our work goes unnoticed, it’s the glue that holds everything together because in its comprehensiveness, every aspect of being human is covered, and hence influences all life on our planet.

Like many people out there I was beginning to feel more tired, I was having sleeping trouble, and I just did not have the same kind of energy that I did in my twenties. I tried changing up my diet a bit, getting more physically activity in my day, but really, there was no noticeable change for me until I discovered Moringa. I feel a noticeable difference when I take this stuff, and when I neglect to take this I am back to feeling crappy, and its as simple as that. This product is really well worth it, and it can make a difference, not only in your weight, but in your energy level, sleep cycles, and the quality of your life.

It has actually been able to do what years of workout and weight loss supplements couldn’t. I found this book when I was looking for yet another weight loss supplement. At first, I was unsure about it, however I decided to try it seeing the health benefits of Moringa.I started following the diet plan that this book advice and after a week I can happily say that this book has the best weight loss recipes that you could ever find. They are very easy and simple to make. I really like how this book encourages to use organic and natural ingredients as much as possible. They are the main reason why this is so effective then the supplements. You might find the diet a little hard to adjust, but trust me once you have gotten used to it, you’ll love it. It works and is much healthier then taking supplements.

It makes the most current information about quantum physics into a conversation that can span the thinking styles of both scientists and spiritists. Katya is a dedicated dreamer, and a receiver of concrete knowledge in frontier quantum physics. There should be no separation of physics and metaphysics. There should be fluency and grace and relation to both subjects. THis book achieves an understandable explanation of our human experience of dimentionality, and of our fractal nature. She proposes a new Theory of Everything (T.O.E.) If you want the most original elegant synopsis of our existence, which uncovers the mysterious forces of nature (including gravity) and therefore our consciousness, buy this book. Deep See Diving By Mick Frankel The author of this extraordinary book has a rare combination of qualities: an astonishing depth of vision and a genuine modesty."Double Bubble Universe" follows on from "Tao of Chaos" exploring Katya Walter's theory of everything (TOE). A TOE is the Holy Grail of modern physics. A theory that reconciles the billiard-ball predictability of Newton's Laws with the mysterious goings-on at the Quantum level.Dr. Walter's book proposes that Physics is blind to another domain in the universe which she describes clearly and patiently with easy-to-grasp imagery.The text is under 150 pages but the book really gets you thinking. In a book of this scope, it's very refreshing to find that the author has a gentle, conversational style and an open-minded approach towards the reader.For example, on page 17 she writes "Consider this a journey into possibility. I don't mind if you treat this as science fiction, science fact, an amusing tale... or purely just diverting bladerdash... take it as you will and let it take you where it will."And, as in "Tao Of Chaos" where it leads is to the I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle that, according to Katya Walter, has: "unique fractal shorthand in a coded way that can merge physics and metaphysics."Extensively referenced and full of diagrams I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.

Not really for the TRUE math geek, but still a good read By Tiffany F Merritt I received a complimentary advanced copy, and while I wasn't particularly interested in it, my husband said that he found it to be an enjoyable read. The book is full of 2-3 page vignettes that only take a few minutes to read (which makes this, according to my husband, an excellent book for the bathroom!). He reported the true math geeks would likely already know most of the interesting facts shared in the book, but the more casual nerd would probably like it quite a bit.

Attempt of mankind to run from the presence of God By A Customer In this powerful, classic book, first published in 1934, the eminent Swiss existential philosopher Max Picard argues that though the "flight from God" is not a phenomenon unique to this age, man has nevertheless put himself and society in an extremely dangerous situation with the progressive secularization of Western culture. In the Age of Faith, Picard says, a man had to make a conscious decision to separate himself from the world of Faith. Today, the world, not just the individual, is in flight, and men must extricate themselves from modernity and make a deliberate decision to find and affirm Faith. About the Author Alfred S. Posamentier is professor of mathematics education and dean of the School of Education at the City College of the City University of New York. He has authored and co-authored several resource books in mathematics education for Corwin Press.Stephen Krulik is professor of mathematics education at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he is responsible for the undergraduate and graduate preparation of mathematics teachers for Grades K-12, as well as in the inservice training of mathematics teachers at the graduate level. He teaches a wide variety of courses, among them the History of Mathematics, Methods of Teaching Mathematics, and the Teaching of Problem Solving. Before coming to Temple University, he taught mathematics in the New York City public schools for 15 years, where he created and implemented several courses designed to prepare students for the SAT examination. Nationally, Krulik has served as a member of the committee responsible for preparing the Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics of the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCTM). He was also the editor of the NCTM s 1980 yearbook Problem Solving in School Mathematics. He is the author or co-author of more than 20 books for teachers of mathematics, including Assessing Reasoning and Problem Solving: A Sourcebook for Elementary School Teachers. He has served as a consultant to and has conducted many workshops for school district throughout the United States and Canada, as well as delivering major presentations in Austria, Hungary, Australia, and international professional meetings, where his major focus is on preparing all students to reason and problem-solve in their mathematics classroom, as well as in their lives. Krulik received his BA degree in mathematics from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, and his MA and EdD in mathematics education from Columbia University s Teachers College.
