By Craig Matteson A beautiful little book that is designed to help you think about a gospel topic each day of the year. There is a scripture and a paragraph or three related to it (not necessarily commentary on it) by President Thomas S. Monson. The book is meant to comfort, inspire, and set a brighter tone for each of our days. I enjoy it a great deal and gave one to my son-in-law.A great purchase.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Daily Inspiration By Kenny Perfect daily inspiration that gives you a inspired mix of ancient scripture and modern prophetic guidance. Similar layout to Gordon B. Hinkley's "Stand a Little Taller" that was a favorite bedside book for many years. Looking forward to being uplifted with this book. Worth every penny!

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. BUY THIS BOOK! A MUST OWN. By Brent Taylor Simply, this man is a prophet of God. An experienced leader in the highest councils of the church for decades... scores. And amongst these great men perhaps the greatest modern example of Christlike love and service -- of true charity. And, as it happens, a great story teller who finds much wisdom in a lifetime of experiences. Spending a moment each day with him -- priceless.I'm a fan of public libraries. In a world full of more than one can read, little interest in reading something more than once. Few works worthy of that distinction. Here's one that is; 365 days a year... year after year. It sits beside matching books for each of the four standard works and a similar collection of Gordon B. Hinckley -- another wise prophet. My regret is not cracking each of these six open daily... every day. Seems like a great resolution for an approaching new year.

This book explains the science of climate change in plain language and shows that the 2 to 4 percent of climate scientists who are skeptical that humans are the main cause of global warming are a fringe minority―and have a well-established history of being wrong.

• Provides a unique, scientifically backed, and easily understood evaluation of the global temperature predictions made by both climate change skeptics and mainstream climate scientists

• Presents readers with a plethora of concrete, verifiable evidence for the author's claims―information that holds the skeptics and deniers accountable for their history of being wrong regarding their assertions

• Discusses possible solutions to climate change, such as carbon emissions pricing―a concept that has gained bipartisan support among economists

Climatology versus Pseudoscience: Exposing the Failed Predictions of Global Warming Skeptics, by Dana Nuccitelli

Review "Climatology vs. Psuedoscience does something that has never been done before: it takes specific climate change projections made over the years by pioneering and mainstream climate scientists, and those made by skeptics, comparing them with subsequent temperature measurements to see which has proven a better predictor of what came to pass. . . . [Y]ou owe it to yourself to put your skepticism to the test by reading this book and learning just whose science has proven true." - The Barrie Examiner"Nuccitelli's writing is clear and his explanations lucid. . . . [T]he primary audience for this book is likely to be the much larger group of climate educators, communicators, and interested citizens looking for solid, well-reasoned arguments against some of the most common contrarian claims. For them, this book will stand as a well-written and invaluable resource." - National Center for Science Education"The book includes the best available short account of the history of climate science and describes climate change models and controversies in brief but incisive and well-illustrated detail. . . . Nuccitelli's book is particularly valuable for its succinct treatment of key disputes without the heated rhetoric. Summing Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals and practitioners." - Choice

31 of 41 people found the following review helpful. This book fills an important and wide open niche. By Gregory T. Laden Dana Nuccitelli has become one of the key people in the international discussion of climate change science. He is co-writer with John Abraham at the Climate Consensus - the 97% blog at the Guardian, and has contributed hundreds of entries to John Cook’s famous site SkepticalScience.com. He has measurably helped people to understand climate change science, as well as the nuances of the false debate based over climate pseudoscience generated by science deniers. And, he’s written a book!Climatology Versus Pseudoscience: Exposing the Failed Predictions of Global Warming Skeptics fills a wide open niche in the climate science discussion. Dana powers through the literature on climate science, nearly comprehensively identifying and describing instances of the predictions, projections, or assertions made by major climate scientists as well as major climate science deniers. (Though the distinction between denier and non-denier emerged later in the full time frame addressed in the book.) Simply put, Dana compares the two to see which is correct: the projection that human generated greenhouse gas pollution warms the Earth and changes the climate, or the projection that it does not.It turns out it does! But you knew that. But what you might not have realized is the overall time frame of how this situation has developed. Dana skillfully documents the deeply disturbing fact that the issue of global warming (and related things) has been settled for a very long time. Were it not for mainly fossil fuel industry funded anti-science activists, we would not be having this discussion today, and Dana would not have had to write his book. Rather, scientist would be focused on figuring out the remaining and important details of how the Earth’s climate system responds to human pollution as well as natural changes, and policy makers would be busy working out how to keep the Carbon in the ground. We probably would have had a price on Carbon years ago, and we’d probably be running our civilizations off of a very high and ever increasing percentage of clean (non fossil carbon) energy. But no, those denialists had to ruin it for everyone with their fake skepticism.Climatology Versus Pseudoscience: Exposing the Failed Predictions of Global Warming Skeptics is engagingly written, clear, accurate, non-technical but not watered down. If you know the stuff in this book you can be more confident than ever having those conversations with with your friends Denialist Dan and Warmest Willie. In fact, I would recommend Climatology Versus Pseudoscience along side Michael Mann’s book The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines for a comprehensive treatment of the history of both denialism and the science itself.Dana covers the early days of climate science, discusses the “Astounding Accuracy of Early Climate Models (Chapter 3), discusses the development of the scientific consensus on climate change, and provides an excellent overview of the current situation with greenhouse gas pollution caused climate change.I strongly recommend this book for the general reader, but I would also suggest it for use in certain classes, either in high school or college. If you are a teacher and want to thoroughly cover the “Debate” over climate science, this is the book.

An informative book By bd2999 This is a pretty good work overall that covers the different stages of pseudoscience over some of the range of climate science. In particular various prominent climate models and some of their physical world inputs. It is nice to see these laid out clearly in one place. The work also looks at problems with "climate skeptics" or denier arguments in the context of these models. This is mostly done by pointing out flaws in the underlying premise of what would seem, by the every day joe, as being reasonable.A fair bit of the book, at least a chapter, is devoted to the 97% consensus works, as the author was involved in one of the studies, Some of the attacks on it and so on. It is an interesting section to read and recommended to fully understand any of the non-controversy over the issue. You might as well ask a biologist of evolution is a lie or not. The number would be the same or higher. My only criticism of the book is not because of the work itself but my expectation. I generally was hoping the work would focus a bit more on denier arguments and their problems in relation to real science. The book does that, to be sure, but I was hoping that it be a longer work and cover more of the points used. As all of them have the same defects the author does a good job pointing out.

23 of 32 people found the following review helpful. A fine review of denialist's assertions compared to observed reality By Burrowing Owl I read the book last week, while on vacation in the East Mojave Desert. Much of it is amusing, since the behavior of deniers is itself amusing. There are still people who claim there is a "debate" regarding evolution, just as there are people who claim there is a "debate" about human-caused climate change. In some cases people reject both observed phenomena, based upon the same reasons: the facts are contrary to their cherished yet irrational beliefs. Perhaps among politicians there is still a "debate," but among the world's scientists the debate ended decades ago. As this book shows, scientists have been correct about the physics involves for many decades, such that predictions made in the 1930s have been demonstrated accurate.Scientists have been projecting the effects of human-caused climate change since the 1930s. Some of the oldest projections still show excellent agreement with later observations even more than 70 years later: S.G. Callendar in 1936 (published in 1937) is one fine example. By the end of the 1960s the world's scientists reached consensus regarding the fact that #1 humans have caused and are causing climate change, and #2 the changing climate is a major threat to human society as well as the entire global biosphere. It was not until the start of the 1980s that professional deniers started to fabricate doubt among non-scientists regarding these two facts---- and as this book shows, some of that effort has been amusing even as that effort has harmed people in an evil, immoral, unethical, sinister way.An excellent book.

Charles Darwin’s theories, first published more than 150 years ago, still set the paradigm of how we understand the evolution of life--but scientific advances of recent decades have radically altered that understanding. In fact the currently accepted history of life on Earth is flawed and out of date. Now two pioneering scientists, one already an award-winning popular author, deliver an eye-opening narrative that synthesizes a generation’s worth of insights from new research.

Writing with zest, humor, and clarity, Ward and Kirschvink show that many of our long-held beliefs about the history of life are wrong. Three central themes emerge from the narrative. First, the development of life was not a stately, gradual process: Catastrophe, argue Ward and Kirschvink, shaped life’s history more than all other forces combined--from notorious events like the sudden extinction of dinosaurs to recently discovered ones like "Snowball Earth" and the "Great Oxygenation Event." One startling possibility: that life arrived on Earth from Mars. Second, life consists of carbon, but three other molecules have determined how it evolved: oxygen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide are carbon’s silent partners. Third, ever since Darwin we have thought of evolution in terms of species. Yet it is the evolution of ecosystems--from deep-ocean vents to rainforests--that has formed the living world as we know it.

Drawing on their years of experience in paleontology, biology, chemistry, and astrobiology, Ward and Kirschvink tell a story of life on Earth that is at once too fabulous to imagine and too familiar to dismiss. And in a provocative coda, they assemble discoveries from the latest cutting-edge research to imagine how the history of life might unfold deep into the future.

117 of 126 people found the following review helpful. Packed with great information, but very hard to read By Aaron C. Brown On the positive side, this book has some fascinating, detailed and up-to-date information about the evolution of life on earth. The authors focus on the environment as opposed to the growth and development of taxonomic hierarchy. Astronomical, geophysical, climatic and biological processes create an environment, and species proliferate to fill niches. In many cases, it is primarily biological processes that drive the climate change that leads to the next round of destruction and innovation. Particular attention is paid to lags in the process, biological innovations that remain rare for millions of years before conditions arise to support their explosive expansions; and niches that went unfilled for millions of years.Despite covering billions of years, the history of life itself occupies only a quarter or less of the book. The other material is only tangentially related, and is poorly organized and intrusive. I have no idea why there is so much on astrobiology, except that it is a specialty of one of the authors. I understand that there may someday be links between life and climate on one hand, and conditions on non-Earth planets on the other; and also between events on other planets and the origin of life on Earth. But not today. Today it is a mix of highly technical material not germane to what we know about the history of life on Earth, and some pretty wild speculation.Another focus of a lot of pages is the history of fossil hunting and other field investigation of the history of life, especially with respect to the oldest finds. Relegated to a single chapter, this could be interesting for specialists and historians, and skipped by the rest of us. But it is inserted more or less at random throughout the text. Moreover, there is the wrong amount of insider stroking and clawing, not enough to be archly amusing, but not little enough to be overlooked by people who don't really care.My final complaint is the presentation is almost willfully off-putting. There is a lot of whining about the problems with geologic era conventions, both in general and in their use in paleobiology. Not only is this tiresome, but the authors refuse to abide by any consistent convention. I would be happy if they said at the beginning that they would use conventional names and perhaps footnote the problems; or if they would use some better scheme and put a translation table in the back. But they do both, and neither, as the mood strikes. I lost count of how many times they explained the different names by US and non-US geology texts. Actually, on this particular issue, I would have welcomed one clear chapter.Even on something as important and easy as dates, the authors cannot settle on a system. Early in the book they promise to use MYO (not MYA or MYR or Megaannum or million years or billion years or "Precambrian") but then they switch terms at whim.If you're really interested in this stuff, this is the best source I have found for it, and you'll put up with the flaws. If not, I suggest you wait until someone more disciplined than these authors takes up the same subject.

I am very interested in this subject, so was looking forward to settling down to a good read. What a disappointment! The writing is poor, murky, and repetitive. The authors should have spent another couple of years on it, read it aloud, organized it, and hired a good copyeditor who could tell them about a style sheet. They also should have figured out how to refer to each other consistently in the text, in a way that is not distracting. I can only assume that Ward is under pressure to continue to produce, and has lost interest in quality. He needs to check out Rob Dunn's or William Logan's books. I wish I could give it half a star.

21 of 25 people found the following review helpful. The latest news from life on earth By M Ward and Kirschvink have put all the latest scientific results of the last 10 years or so that are new and different into this book. Claims to have found the very first fossils of life are presented and then discarded due to new evidence. When did bacteria start photosynthesizing? And how can we be sure? And on it goes, as they pass through the geological eras, pausing to point out how our current understanding has changed. I found this fascinating!I didn't mind a few pages on how life could have started on mars. And I wasn't put off by inconsistent usage or Terms MYO or MYA as another reviewer was. Although I must say, I wasn't much interested in their description of what will happen to our planet, one Billion years into the future. Of course, their attempt to be as up-to-date as possible means that not every idea will stand the test of time. On some issues the authors preferences become obvious. Kirschvink really likes the full-blown snowball earth hypothesis, i.e. the ice ball and not the slush ball version. But other than that, the only thing that I really want to criticize, is the lack of pictures and drawings. On the other hand eBook readers won't have any problems if they buy the Kindle version.

Maybe correlate these chapters with your syllabus. It's an easy read and makes things simple. I did not buy any other book before taking my boards, this was plenty!!!

In Together in the Space Between, author Greg Kinsch compiles information from various disciplines not usually seen as compatible by postindustrial modern man. It discusses how the world and universe operate and how that knowledge can be used to help move the human species toward peace on earth. He begins with the premise that current paradigms won't work in the coming years because the exponential growth and decay that underlie their functioning is unsustainable. He goes on to say that our product-based way and view of life has had a devastating effect on our understanding of process in our lives. Kinsch goes to the root of the problem and discusses: How the workings of our brain show our perceptions may be unreliable and we may have some control over our own perceptions of happiness The phenomenon of near-death experiences and why they occur more frequently in the modern age Why man is progressing toward a higher consciousness and that these experiences are part of the evolutionary process The zero-point field, a part of quantum physics showing that what seems impossible is capable of being studied and researched World religions and the role they've played in the world to this point After admitting the failure of religion to remain open to truth in others, Together in the Space Between offers hope through Kinsch's unique interpretation of the Eucharist. He offers a survival guide to adapt to the changes that need to be made and are certainly coming.

Healthcare providers in the American medical system may find that patients from different cultures bring unfamiliar expectations, anxieties, and needs into the examination room. To provide optimal care for all patients, it is important to see differences from the patient's perspective and to work with patients from a range of demographics. Caring for Patients from Different Cultures has been a vital resource for nurses and physicians for more than twenty years, offering hundreds of case studies that illustrate cross-cultural conflicts or misunderstandings as well as examples of culturally competent health care.

Now in its fifth edition, Caring for Patients from Different Cultures covers a wide range of topics, including birth, end of life, communication, traditional medicine, mental health, pain, religion, and multicultural staff challenges. This edition includes more than sixty new cases, introduces a new chapter on improving adherence, and updates the concluding chapter with examples of changes various hospitals have made to accommodate cultural differences. Grounded in concepts from the fields of cultural diversity and medical anthropology, Caring for Patients from Different Cultures provides healthcare workers with a frame of reference for understanding cultural differences and sound alternatives for providing the best possible care to multicultural communities.

Douglas As Director of Nursing for a small, rural county health department, I was looking for cultural information on dealing with Hispanic populations. What this book covers is all of that and more.It was a real eye opener! Ms. Galanti gives case synopses on caring for patients from many diverse cultures. She covers cultural differences with nutrition, religion, family support, response to pain, and a wealth of other topics.I purchased this book for our staff library, and a copy for myself and my nurse-mother. Anyone who deals with people from other cultures(not just health care providers) needs to read this book!

Galanti writes with the clarity and simplicity of someone who knows her subject well, and she illustrates her points about cultural misunderstandings that impact health care with the fascinating true experiences of medical professionals. An extremely valuable and interesting book that holds the reader's attention from beginning to end!

Peterson My students loved the real life situations in this book!I recommend that teachers use this to incorporate multiculturalism in a very meaningful way in biology classes, and welcome ideas about how others use it. The way I did it was to present the problem, have students brainstorm what they might do, and then reveal the resolution (or lack of one) from the book. I am so glad I found this while browsing the medical section. You are not likely to find a used copy for sale because the stories are so interesting to everyone.

By Rob Natiuk EDGAR DEGAS (1834 to 1917) was a famous French artist – paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings. More than half of his works features dancing and dancers. Critics labeled him as Impressionist but he preferred Realist.Degas was obsessed with painting early in his life. In his high school and college years, he had turned a room in his house into a studio. His art teacher gave him this advice: “Draw lines, young man, and still more lines, both from life and from memory, and you will become a good artist.” Do you think that’s good advice? Why or why not?Look at his self-portrait #1. What can you tell about him? What did Degas want others to see? Painting #3 we have a dance class. How does it resemble today’s dance studios? What’s different? Besides dancing, what other subjects did Degas love to paint? Look closely at paintings in a category, such as portraits of people and people in common pursuits. How well do you think Degas captured the “soul” of these people? To observe paintings and think about the why’s and how’s of the artist makes them more meaningful.

Providing a self-contained resource for upper undergraduate courses in combinatorics, this text emphasizes computation, problem solving, and proof technique. In particular, the book places special emphasis the Principle of Inclusion and Exclusion and the Multiplication Principle. To this end, exercise sets are included at the end of every section, ranging from simple computations (evaluate a formula for a given set of values) to more advanced proofs. The exercises are designed to test students' understanding of new material, while reinforcing a working mastery of the key concepts previously developed in the book. Intuitive descriptions for many abstract techniques are included. Students often struggle with certain topics, such as generating functions, and this intuitive approach to the problem is helpful in their understanding. When possible, the book introduces concepts using combinatorial methods (as opposed to induction or algebra) to prove identities. Students are also asked to prove identities using combinatorial methods as part of their exercises. These methods have several advantages over induction or algebra.

Review

“The book is an excellent introduction to combinatorics. … The author uses a clear language and often provides an easy intuitive access to abstract subjects. The presentation is well motivated, the explanations are transparent and illustrated by carefully selected examples. Each section ends with a list of well formulated exercises which make the book ideally suited for self-instruction.” (Astrid Reifegerste, zbMATH 1328.05001, 2016)

“This book by Beeler … is an excellent introductory text on combinatorics. The author gives the right balance of theory, computation, and applications, and he presents introductory-level topics, such as the multiplication principle, binomial theorem, and distribution problems in a clear manner. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers and faculty.” (S. L. Sullivan, Choice, Vol. 53 (1), September, 2015)

Aliza Vitis-Shomron was born in Warsaw into a wealthy merchant family, where Jewish tradition mixed with Polish culture. In September 1939, when the Nazis began their reign of terror in Europe and invaded Poland, Aliza was eleven years old. In her diaries—furtively written on scraps of precious paper that she kept throughout the war—she described the history of her family, struggling to survive in the occupied Warsaw Ghetto. Those diaries and later writings formed the basis for this memoir. Becoming a member of Hashomer Hatzair, the noted youth movement in the Warsaw Ghetto, gave Aliza hope and encouraged her to fight for survival. As a result of an extraordinary series of “miracles,” Aliza managed to survive after being sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. She was among those liberated by American troops, and she has continued to tell the story throughout her life. Aliza is among the last of the Warsaw Ghetto survivors. She has been passionately lecturing around the world about the revolt, and she has escorted numerous youth groups on their visits to Poland. This book has been previously translated and published in Hungarian, Polish, and Hebrew.

True Inspiration, a Story of Resilence By Sandra Wendel Aliza's story is inspiring and shows the profound resilience of this incredible Holocaust survivor. She was present at history, inside the youth movement in the Warsaw Ghetto, and she was sent out to tell the world this story of survival, which she has now done, in its English translation. Her story reminds me of Leon Uris's Mila 18. It was my distinct honor to edit this story for Aliza and her dear family who never want the world to forget. Thanks to her, we never will.

I can't even imagine going through what she and so many others went through. I'm so glad that she was able to save some of her diary entries and was able to write about what she went through a few years after in Israel. She's an a amazing women and I was engaged by her words and story.

In this eBook I’m going to show you simple proven strategies to help you flip the switch from exhausted to extraordinary! Although your environment might not change, YOU will change by learning how to decrease your stress from the inside out. As you’re reading this book, just remember that rarely can anyone do a complete 180 and implement every fatigue reversing strategy at once. Instead, I want you to choose a few actions to implement and stick with them. Once they become habits, then add a few more to your list until you’ve incorporated most or all. It’s just like learning to become a nurse. You first learned how to assess vital signs. Once you mastered vital signs, then you learned how to assess each body system from neuro to musculoskeletal – one system at a time. Now, you perform comprehensive head to toe assessments without even thinking. And, may walk into a room and know right away the status of your patient just by looking at him! Remember, just like in nursing school; take it one step at a time and aim for progress – not perfection.

By Amazon Customer Renee's book is positive, enthusiastic, & contains real life tips for how to improve your outlook on colleagues, peers, nursing, as well as life outside the hospital. I have worked in nursing for 25+ years & can identify with each of the many examples Renee uses & support her concise, clear, & very simple tips to save yourself from the negativity of our culture. Nurses are outcome focused. I love that Renee focuses on simple, concrete steps we can take to influence our own outcomes, but at the same uses my favorite expression "Its about progress not perfection." It's a value at twice the price! Well done Dr. Thompson.

The New York Times

«Trata de analizar la clase de maravillas y de fantasías hipotéticas que podrían surgir en una conversación de bar».

The Atlantic

«Este libro es una buena combinación de diversión y una clase magistral de tal razonamiento. Como en todas las buenas lecciones, solo te das cuenta de que has aprendido algo una vez que se ha terminado».

The Economist

«Munroe se ha convertido en algo así como un héroe de culto».

The New York Times
