Charles Lindbergh was the quintessential Lone-Eagle American hero, the handsome, modest Midwesterner who was the first to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. His record-setting flight took thirty-three hours and thirty minutes, making him the first person in history to be in New York one day and Paris the next - and propelling him to international fame. Lindbergh remains a compelling figure today, admired for his epic flight, the grace and power of his prize-winning prose, and his environmental prescience. Here, in the first of two volumes on his life and legacy, historian Will Bergen explores Lindbergh's life from a boy who was always "looking out of windows" - and terrified of falling - to the most celebrated aviator in history.

Hold on tight for a thrilling adventure By Brandon M Charles Lindbergh lived a life of excitement and celebrity, tumult and terror -- eventful and varied enough to fill at least two lifetimes. The first of those lifetimes, covered here in this first of a two-volume biography, takes place before the kidnapping and death of his infant son, Charles Jr., which set off the sensational "Trial of the Century," and started his life spiraling down. This is Lindbergh on the rise -- from a boy with his head in the clouds, to a young head-strong college dropout riding a motorcycle off to flight school seemingly on a whim, to a daredevil of the skies walking on the wing of a plane, and finally, a history-making aviator flying solo across the Atlantic from New York to Paris. Along the way, Lindbergh became the biggest, and most hounded, celebrity in the world. The steps between are anything but predictable, and the author takes us along on this amazing journey. This is a fun read, and a terrific primer for what's still to come in the life of Lindbergh.
