When I first rededicated my life to the Lord many years ago, it was those bite-size teachings that got me through and sustained me.In Sandra Byrd's Home & Garden Devotions, you will find messages from Sandra, comprised of everyday activities, but infused with the Word of God. There is one devotion for every day of the year. Each devotion comes with a story, scripture, and what Sandra has learned about God in those seemingly small moments. Here's an excerpt from September 17th, titled "Muddy Feet," where her daughter had been playing where she shouldn't have and gotten into some mud."I didn't ask her why she'd gone out of bounds or point out that this mess was the consequence of the action-a consequence that other people were going to have to help her clean up.Instead, in a moment of true inspiration (and after she changed from the muddy pants), I took a washcloth and some warm water and washed her feet. Say nothing, the Holy Spirit prompted me, and I obeyed, glad he'd made it so clear. After my daughter's feet were clean, she reached up for a hug. I hugged her back and knew that nothing would ever need be said. She already knew that what she'd done was not right, and she wished it undone; although I couldn't help with that part, I could help her make it right again.""Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord," and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set an example that you should do as I have done for you."John 13:12-15These mini-teachings are great for a moment of peace. Wisdom can be found in the stories Sandra shares.Another sweet feature you will find is each month has a fun gardening, home, or cooking activity. I want to try some of them with my family, especially the one for September, "Cupcakes in a Jar."I really enjoyed this devotional, and will continue to enjoy it for the next year. I recommend reading it in a quiet place, with a nice cup of peppermint tea. Many blessings to you as you learn ways to grown in Him,BethDisclosure Statement: I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for this review. Author's Personal Journey Year Devotional By Conny “This devotional is a collection of thoughts and truths that God has impressed upon me as I have journeyed with him through daily life in the home,” Sandra Byrd writes in the introduction to her book, The One Year Home & Garden Devotions.~ What ~At four hundred pages, this book that is meant to be read daily throughout a year blends home and garden topics with learning more about God and His love. Using mainly the New International Version of the Holy Bible, also referenced are the NLT, ESV, Voice, and Message. Each page is dedicated to a day in the year with a title. Several paragraphs follow of Byrd’s experiences, memories, and thoughts that include her personal feelings and frustrations, husband, children, friends, and church to name a few. The last one to three paragraphs correlate to God and how to apply the theme to Him. One-to-three Bible verses are written out at the bottom of the page. Pages of creative food recipes, garden tips, DIY projects, and homemade gifts start every month.~Why ~Discussing her husband, children, dog, house, garden, food, self, and a plethora of incidences, the author encourages the reader to change, grow, and get closer to God throughout a year. Some of the stories are funny or charming, while others are observant, insightful, or emotional. Being a personal diary of sorts, she shows her strengths and faults as she reminds to rely more on the Savior.~ Why Not ~Since the book is based on Byrd’s relationships and experiences, it is more of a personal journey that she may relate to more than the reader. With each story being from her perspective, there is little Bible study or research that some devotionals include such as prayers, fill-in-the-blanks, or bullet-point reminders.~ Who ~Best-selling author, Byrd has written over forty books including those for tweens, teens, and adults. She enjoys mentoring and coaching new writers.~ Wish ~Hoping not to hurt this good author’s feelings, I expected the book to focus on God more than anything else. Unfortunately since this one contains no prayers or in-depth study, I found it concentrated on the I, me, my, and mine instead of God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Also, my preference is that all pronouns of God are capitalized for reverence.~ Want ~If you like devotionals that are based on the writer’s experiences as she relates to God, this is a good book, but it is not the best addition for me to be read with the Bible every day. Thanks to Tyndale House for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review based on the reviewer’s honest opinion.

I wasn't sure when I first opened it because most of my devotional books are the nice little hard cover books that scream Daily Devotional Book. This doesn't scream that and I like it. The pictures on the front are warm and inviting.I read a few readings and they seemed to be applicable to me. I like when daily devotionals start with a story; in the interest of honesty, I like when any inspirational book starts with a story. Most days seem to start with a story and so that is a plus. I think I will enjoy it. Of course, being the personality that I am, I cannot stop my current devotional book (which came as a review book last year) to start this one. Oh no; this book will sit until January 1st and then I will get it out and use it for the year 2016. That is my plan right now anyway.I'm looking forward to starting 2016 with this book and seeing what I can learn from it and grow in and be challenged. This book was a complimentary copy from Tyndale House in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
