Selig I love reading collections of interviews and conversations between intelligent, thoughtful human beings with fresh perspectives on politics and culture. This book is an awesome one in every way. There's much to be appreciated, not the least of which is the sheer number of interviews--37 in total, a real bang for your readership buck! Also impressive is the range of topics covered, and the very interesting ways that psychologists and psychoanalysts working within the depth tradition approach these topics. While I may not agree with all interpretations of cultural and political events, I do appreciate the challenge to think deeply upon these matters. This is a book to be devoured slowly and returned to often.

Lafontaine By way of full disclosure let me say that while I have never met the author in “real” life that we are virtual “friends” through the miracle of the internet. This said, I am an ardent believer that a friend (virtual or otherwise) ought to express the truth as they see it rather than to enter into the emotional bondage of expressing a plethora of platitudes without first using their God given ability to read a book with discriminating thought prior to passing a value judgement. With this in mind, I am quite confident in giving this book a 5-star rating.Describing Pythia’s work as a “book” does not quite do it justice. It strikes me as being more of a finely woven tapestry blending together a multitude of personalities and thought. As a general rule I avoid “political” books as I find the element of hyperbole to be distasteful and persons who blindly accept hyperbole as historical fact to be utterly repugnant. The author appears to have succeed in selecting a variety of featured persons with wide-ranging world views and backgrounds who while they may have differing views from one another appear not to have to petrified their political thinking into the fossil known as political dogma. The reader will find many thoughtful insights and will also find instances of humor.“America on the Couch” is not dry reading but is quite fluid in its form and content.Yes, the book approaches nearly 600 pages in length and is not likely to be completed in a single reading but fret not as the book may be laid aside for a time. But I warn you, this is a living book and will not lay dormant for long as it will call to you to read “just on more chapter.”I would finally add that there is a most pleasant surprise at the end of the book in the form of a “Dramatis Personae” giving a brief historical overview of the historical personages mentioned in the text of the book. This section is particularly enjoyable reading as it often provided me with insights into both personalities that I was familiar with as well as introducing me to persons I hitherto was unaware of.So, I suggest you purchase this book and happily for those who are on a restrictive budget “America on the Couch” is also available in an Amazon Kindle format.

I typically wouldn’t read a book of collected interviews by psychologists/psychoanalysts reflecting on political and cultural issues--except perhaps as a cure for insomnia. What a surprise that this page-turner (yes, page turner!) on the most important topics that concern us as citizens today, blew me out of the proverbial water. Both profound and delightfully accessible and inspiring, my favorite interviews so far include Mary Pipher’s interview on what she would do with America if it were her therapy client, Judith Jordon (“The United States of Empathy”) and an extraordinary interview with James Hillman, among others. A remarkable collection.
