This comprehensive textbook by a well-respected Reformed theologian brings together two perennial issues in Christian theology: the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and ecclesiology. It demonstrates the importance of the Holy Spirit in empowering the being and mission of the church and shows how the church's identity and calling are embedded in the larger covenantal purposes of the triune God. Accessibly written with pastors in training in mind, the book probes the classic rubrics of the church as the people of God, the body of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit, igniting readers' ecclesiological imaginations and reclaiming a more biblical, theological, and pastoral vision of church.

Covenant, Community, and the Spirit: A Trinitarian Theology of Church, by Robert Sherman

From the Back Cover "Written with clarity and full of biblical and practical discernment, Covenant, Community, and the Spirit displays the riches that Christian teaching about the Trinity and the Holy Spirit brings to our experience and understanding of the church. This is generous Reformed theology at its best."--John Webster, University of St. Andrews"Uniting us to Christ through the faith-creating gospel, the Holy Spirit simultaneously unites us to Christ's body. Robert Sherman integrates topics that too often float apart, especially personal salvation, the work of the Spirit, and the nature and mission of the church. Deeply rooted in Scripture and the wisdom of Christian interpretation, this exploration is also wonderfully accessible. This is a welcome contribution to the ecumenical conversation, but it is more than that; it is a personally enriching and edifying meditation on what it means to belong to the people of the Triune God."--Michael Horton, Westminster Seminary California"More than solely an ecclesiology, this book offers a richly accessible introduction to the whole of Christian doctrine. Reformed Christians will find here an eloquent and enjoyable presentation of their faith, in a mode that is at once classical and contemporary. For Christians of other traditions, this book manifests the gracious interaction and friendly argumentation that represents the best of ecumenically minded, nonpolemical theology. Read this book to learn what Reformed Christianity is, and read this book to learn what true ecumenism is."--Matthew Levering, Mundelein Seminary"A language of hope rarely occurs in talk of the church today. Crisis and cynicism too often mar conversation about the congregation. Robert Sherman's Covenant, Community, and the Spirit helps us recover an ecclesiology of hope by setting the church community in the context of the gospel of the Triune God and by retrieving not only the powerful imagery of Holy Scripture throughout but also the idioms of the Christian tradition, in both classical and Reformed variations. As Christ's body, God's people, and the Spirit's temple, we are reminded that the church has life-giving hope, and, as pilgrims on a journey, we see that the church is graced with a vital mission and a joyful calling."--Michael Allen, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando

About the Author Robert Sherman (PhD, University of Chicago Divinity School) previously served as the Richard P. Buck Professor of Christian Theology at Bangor Theological Seminary in Bangor, Maine. A leading theologian of the Reformed tradition, he is the author of King, Priest, and Prophet: A Trinitarian Theology of Atonement.

By Zach Barnhart The Trinity is an important doctrine that we should continue to explore, because whether we know it or not, the Trinity serves as a sort of model for many of the aspects of how we were designed to live our lives. For example, the Trinity has much to say about how we were created, how we are saved, how we live on mission, etc. In Covenant, Community, and the Spirit, Robert Sherman uncovers a “Trinitarian theology of Church.” In the book, Sherman focuses much of his attention on the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and specifically how he is a help to the Church. This is a book on ecclesiology, a book on the doctrine of the Trinity, but more than these, a book about who we have been made to be for God in Christ through the Spirit. The book is divided into 6 chapters, yet that doesn’t mean this book is short, nor shallow. Sherman treats each chapter almost like an essay, diving headlong into these topics and proving just how much he has thought through these ideas. The first two chapters are introductory in nature, helping us understand the narrative of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration, and spending much time talking about our beginnings. In chapter 1, “The Story Begins,” Sherman provides a helpful survey of the book of Genesis with the themes of soteriology in mind. For those who want help in seeing types, shadows, and allusions to Jesus in the Old Testament, this is a very helpful chapter, with Sherman providing details on figures like Noah, Abram, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. All of these patriarchs, and others, played a huge role in helping unfold the redemptive purposes of God for his people. In all this, he reminds us of why we should place importance on keeping the Trinity in mind:“Without a sense of this trinitarian framework and its practical necessity, Christians almost inevitably fall into idiosyncratic spiritual individualism or insipid, perhaps dangerous, moralism. In any case, they deprive themselves of most of the true riches offered by life in Christ through the power of the Spirit dedicated to the Father’s eternal purposes…This ancient theological axiom simply means that when you get one, you get them all; every act of God in the world involves all three persons of the Trinity, and we shortchange our sense of God and involvement with God if we close ourselves off to this reality.” (40).Chapter 2 explores how the work of the Trinity is exemplified through a covenant relationship. Sherman writes, “The notion of covenant is a very helpful and relevant theme running through the Bible, but to give it some concrete particularity…these images will be unpacked in the following three chapters” (63).Then, in chapters 3-5, Sherman chooses three biblical images that he feels best explains what the Church is, which are “the body of Christ,” “the people of God,” and “the temple of the Holy Spirit.” These 3 chapters, totaling 140 pages of material, are some of the most comprehensive and deep explorations of these Scriptural images that I know of. Finally, a short chapter 6, which has some reflections on the coming communion, our eschatological reunion with Christ, in which he will marry his Church once and for all.Chapter 3, for example, discusses the body of Christ. One of the most helpful sections of this chapter was Sherman’s focus on the essence of the Word and sacraments. He talks about the meaning of baptism, why baptism is supposed to precede the Lord’s Supper, and how Jesus models what baptism should be. Then, speaking on the Lord’s Supper, Sherman explains where Christ is “located” in sacramentalism, and how our communion practice points to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Sherman reminds us of an important truth in the sacraments here. “Sacraments do not need to have their meaning supplied by the participants, because their meaning is already supplied by the biblical story” (102).Hopefully this is enough of a preview to convince you of the kind of worth this book carries. These are important theological observations we should make in order to build our understanding of the why of church. The Trinity is critical to get right, yet its mysterious reality often deters us from exploring. Thankfully, Sherman has written a clear, accessible, weighty, detailed, and informative work on how we can think through this doctrine, and in turn the ekklesia we belong to.

Selig I love reading collections of interviews and conversations between intelligent, thoughtful human beings with fresh perspectives on politics and culture. This book is an awesome one in every way. There's much to be appreciated, not the least of which is the sheer number of interviews--37 in total, a real bang for your readership buck! Also impressive is the range of topics covered, and the very interesting ways that psychologists and psychoanalysts working within the depth tradition approach these topics. While I may not agree with all interpretations of cultural and political events, I do appreciate the challenge to think deeply upon these matters. This is a book to be devoured slowly and returned to often.

Lafontaine By way of full disclosure let me say that while I have never met the author in “real” life that we are virtual “friends” through the miracle of the internet. This said, I am an ardent believer that a friend (virtual or otherwise) ought to express the truth as they see it rather than to enter into the emotional bondage of expressing a plethora of platitudes without first using their God given ability to read a book with discriminating thought prior to passing a value judgement. With this in mind, I am quite confident in giving this book a 5-star rating.Describing Pythia’s work as a “book” does not quite do it justice. It strikes me as being more of a finely woven tapestry blending together a multitude of personalities and thought. As a general rule I avoid “political” books as I find the element of hyperbole to be distasteful and persons who blindly accept hyperbole as historical fact to be utterly repugnant. The author appears to have succeed in selecting a variety of featured persons with wide-ranging world views and backgrounds who while they may have differing views from one another appear not to have to petrified their political thinking into the fossil known as political dogma. The reader will find many thoughtful insights and will also find instances of humor.“America on the Couch” is not dry reading but is quite fluid in its form and content.Yes, the book approaches nearly 600 pages in length and is not likely to be completed in a single reading but fret not as the book may be laid aside for a time. But I warn you, this is a living book and will not lay dormant for long as it will call to you to read “just on more chapter.”I would finally add that there is a most pleasant surprise at the end of the book in the form of a “Dramatis Personae” giving a brief historical overview of the historical personages mentioned in the text of the book. This section is particularly enjoyable reading as it often provided me with insights into both personalities that I was familiar with as well as introducing me to persons I hitherto was unaware of.So, I suggest you purchase this book and happily for those who are on a restrictive budget “America on the Couch” is also available in an Amazon Kindle format.

I typically wouldn’t read a book of collected interviews by psychologists/psychoanalysts reflecting on political and cultural issues--except perhaps as a cure for insomnia. What a surprise that this page-turner (yes, page turner!) on the most important topics that concern us as citizens today, blew me out of the proverbial water. Both profound and delightfully accessible and inspiring, my favorite interviews so far include Mary Pipher’s interview on what she would do with America if it were her therapy client, Judith Jordon (“The United States of Empathy”) and an extraordinary interview with James Hillman, among others. A remarkable collection.

Even though you may brush your teeth diligently and consistently every day you still have bacteria, viruses, bio-film and even worm-like creatures living in, on, and around your teeth? Between 30 billion and 100 billion "bugs" live in your mouth right this second--even if you just brushed your teeth. They are so resilient that even after a mere three hours from your ordinary brushing and flossing, the organisms can return--causing numerous health problems affecting more than just your mouth. These persistent organisms can cause not only periodontal disease, but may also contribute to other health problems including diabetes, heart disease, COPD, arthritis and even many cancers. So how can you begin to fight off these organisms taking over your mouth and health? Brushing, flossing and mouthwash are not enough. One reason is that everyone has different brushing habits and techniques. Some people miss the same spots repeatedly. Some brush too hard and damage the root structure. Some only spend seconds brushing their teeth, while others take more time to get the job done. Not to mention that the brush you use today is filled with the bacteria you brushed off yesterday! All these things add up to lackluster results and a mouth teeming with bacteria. In addition diet, age and how often you receive professional cleanings play a significant factor in the health of your teeth. In Never Brush Your Teeth Again you will learn: · ~ How bacteria, viruses and other organisms grow inside your mouth · ~ How periodontal disease affects your entire body and immune system · ~ How periodontal disease relates to heart disease, COPD, diabetes and even cancer · ~ How pharmaceutical companies make money from your dental issues · ~ Why two dental visits a year is not enough Healthcare has traditionally been blind to dental care. That's why, in the last 5,500 years, there have only been nine significant advances in the personal oral hygiene field. Now there is a tenth: Dental Air Force, which has taken one dentist almost two decades to now make available to the public. From the Inside Flap To begin with, the toothbrush does not really help teeth as much as the local ads would like to have us believe. As a matter of fact, toothbrushes can even be harmful to our teeth. They often damage the tooth enamel, cause sensitivity ridges and do not remove the bacteria from between teeth very well at all. This little book gives you a massive amount of information about every aspect of what is going on inside our mouths. There are some very deadly diseases that are linked to our inadequate traditional style of brushing that allows bacteria to proliferate. The bacteria starts growing immediately after tooth brushing and keeps growing to the point that it affects our bodies, lowers our immune system and exacerbates serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, COPD or even cancers. This book contains information that is based on scientific dental testing and clinical international medical research. The detailed reference section includes the sources for all the publications and articles from which the information of the book is comprised. In addition, there is a large section of resources for additional reading. Thus, this book not only serves to provide information for immediate use, but goes the extra length to make sure that the reader can do their own personal research if desired and quench their thirst for more knowledge. The main objective of the book is to make its readers aware of the pitfalls that traditional tooth brushing can pose. It explains, in detail, how and why brushing can be harmful. Despite being taught to brush our teeth twice a day ever since we were children, this book brings out the hidden truth about tooth brushing. It not only makes us aware of how to defend our body against the harm caused by brushing, it also suggests an alternate way to keep our mouths healthy and clean. It does a wonderful job of guiding us towards the right way of taking care of our mouth. With each chapter of the book, one will find new information unfolding in front of them - information that you may never have known or that you never even thought existed. "The Zoo in Your Mouth" chapter tells us about all the bugs our mouth harbors and all the threats that might be present in a dormant state in the mouth. There is a chapter on the biofilm ecosystem and most importantly on periodontal disease. Other chapters describe the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases that affect the entire body. The book gives us a very clear idea of all the existing threats to our body as well as to our immune system. The book is a life saver.  Studies show that tooth brushing can lead to serious abrasions on the tooth enamel. This is not just a statement - there is scientific proof.

This sounded absurd to me after having the idea that I have to brush twice a day ingrained since birth. However, Dr. P Piero does a wonderful job of explaining his research and rationale in his "Never Brush Your Teeth Again!". An oral health guide that could be life-changing to say the least, Piero takes a look at the persistent bacteria that remain even after brushing, what harm they can cause to your mouth and health in general, and what can be done about it. An eye-opening read to say the least that has changed the way that I look at oral hygiene.

By Heather G “Never Brush Your Teeth Again!” This is a title that will catch your attention, especially if you have as many tooth problems as I do. Add in the fact that this was written by a Dentist, P. Piero DDS – and it caught my money as well.I’ve known for a while that oral hygiene affects many things in your body, but I was unaware just how much! As a gateway to the body your teeth and gums matter. This book details a myriad of ways the bacteria in your mouth play with your health, from Heart Disease to Cancer and everything in between – and what to do about it. The biofilm that coats our entire mouth is the main culprit of these risks, and is the prime target we should be aiming to eliminate. Dr. Piero proposes a radical, and brilliant new method to eliminate this dangerous element, Dental Air Force.A mixture of air, water and dental cleaner all stored in a convenient and affordable machine the size of a toaster, this machine delivers powerful cleaning anytime of the day. Better than brushing and more effective that flossing – this is the wave of the future, one that just may keep you out of the Dentist’s chair, except for those routine cleanings.

My Virtual Reality Trip to the Louvre, Paris Part 6 of 12 By Don Kidwell 17th Century Netherlands : Hokusai was a real treat as was Rembrandt once we found it. After taking a left, a quick right and another left past earlier Dutch artists we finally arrived at our first Rembrandt. My daughter Kristy loved "The Girl in a Picture Frame" since it looked so much like her. I enjoyed "Jacob Blessing the sons of Joseph" and most particularly "The Night Watch" for it's startling realism. All right,so who's up for some Vermeer? And if you're wanting to join us from the beginning please page back to da Vinci if you like.

By Rob Natiuk Rembrandt (July 1606 – Odtober 1669)How would you like a name like Harmenszoon Van Rijn Rembrandt? No wonder he is almost always referred to as plain REMBRANDT! But in the Netherlands long names were common. He grew up in a large household, being the ninth child in a well-to-do family. I wonder how that would influence his art? That’s a subject that children can consider—how does one’s family encourage or discourage art?Religion was another fervent influence in the family. His mother was a Roman Catholic and his father of Dutch Reformed faith. Thus Rembrandt’s works reveals his deep Christian faith. Rembrandt painted many portraits of people in his land, including self-portraits. He portrayed his subjects realistically, no vanity or disguising faults.Depending on your young observers, you might have them react to the first painting, a self-portrait. Would you like this fellow for a father or grandfather? Do you think he’s a pleasant man? Spend a minute or so on all the portraits in this collection and see the similarities or differences. How does Painting #4 strike you, “The Storm on the Sea of Galilee?” Is it a frightening scene? Who is in the boat? What other paintings have their inspiration in the Bible stories? Then we have the mythology paintings – such as “The Abduction of Europa." Does this look real to you? Why or why not? Since this artist painted much of common life of the time, what can you learn about that time and people? As usual in this series of books, you have to consult other sources for information about the artist and his paintings. It's worth the research.

Despite spectacular advances, modern medicine faces formidable global challenges in several key areas—notably the persistence of major killer diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, and newer threats including HIV/AIDS, resistant infections, and Ebola. As such, modern medicine has not led to a significant decrease in chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, and other degenerative and autoimmune diseases. The authors believe that modern medicine needs to experience a paradigm shift, an integration of traditions—in particular from the ancient systems like Ayurveda and Yoga.

Integrative Approaches for Health: Biomedical Research, Ayurveda and Yoga brings together the basic principles of interdisciplinary systems approach for an evolving construct of future medicine. Such an approach is already emerging at the cutting edge of current research in omics, bioinformatics, computational and systems biology. Several leading institutions of medicine have adopted Yoga and complementary medicine to widen their reach, and deepen effectiveness in therapeutic practices. The amalgam of modern medicine, with its strengths in scientific rigor, blended with the basic principles of life drawn from Ayurveda and Yoga might evolve into a medicine of tomorrow. Integrative approaches are no longer alternative, perhaps taking these approaches is the only possible way to heal our sick planet. This book introduces important trends and tools for biomedical researchers and physicians alike, to innovate the practice of medicine for the better.

"...can be read and used along the same lines as a valid manual, not only by those who work in the field and wish to clarify concepts which are frequently misinterpreted in the Western world but also by those not expert... we recommend one to read it."--J-AIM, Integrative Approaches for Health

"...serves an important point of drawing attention to the negative side of contemporary health care systems and practices and suggests the importance of integrating the best of modern and “ancient” wisdoms."--Proceedings of Indian National Science Academy, Integrative Approaches for Health

"The subject is well researched, meticulously documented, discussed thoroughly from historic perspective, current opportunities and challenges, as well as futuristic possibilities. The monograph should become an integral part of medical education in countries like India, for students of both allopathic as well AYUSH systems " - Gundu H.R. Rao PhD

"Integrative Approaches for Health by Patwardhan et al brings for the first time traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda within the framework of Integrative Medicine in an engaging scholarly analysis that is comprehensive and incisive." - Ram Manohar P, MD (Ay)

"The book brings together the basic principles of interdisciplinary systems approach for an evolving construct of future medicine." - The Times of India

"Authors of this book, as noted in the authors’introduction, “represent the three generations of scientific progress” and “bring a unique blend of domain expertise in each of the three components ofthis book Biomedical Research, Ayurveda and Yoga”. - S. C. Lakhotia, Cytogenetics Laboratory, Department of Zoology

"I look this [Integrative Approaches for Health - Biomedical Research Ayurveda and Yoga] as a treasure and as a reference book as not only it covers India, but also touches upon many other countries in the process which also gives equal opportunity for us to understand that the evolution of modern medicine has such a strong base with the traditional wisdom that these countries in the Asian region and partially in the west Asian region has." - Dr.V. Prakash

"… a book which can be read and used along the same lines as a valid manual, not only by those who work in the field and wish to clarify concepts which are frequently misinterpreted in the Western world but also by those not expert but who wish to understand clearly and effectively the true meaning of Ayurveda and Yoga and potential that both of these offer if implemented in an interactive manner in national health systems; a difficult, but already necessary challenge. We can only conclude, therefore, by paraphrasing a quotation used by Doctors and Patwardhan et al., ‘The totality of a book is certainly more than a review of it’ and it is for this reason that we recommend one to read it." - Paolo Roberti di Sarsina, Charity for Person Centered Medicine-Moral Entity

"...an important step in the direction of informed integrative healthcare as it outlines knowledge and perspectives that can help shape strategies for disruptive innovation and leap frogging into 21st century healthcare."--Current Science,Integrative Approaches for Health

Integrative approach: The intelligent option By Kishor Patwardhan The core message of the book is that an integrative approach (in the form that is defined and advocated clearly by the authors) to healthcare is more intelligent option than any others in resolving the present state of crisis in the sector. The authors propose the ways and means by which Ayurveda and Yoga can contribute in achieving a better global health. What impressed me the most is that the authors have restrained themselves from all temptations to propose any extreme views on the topic. They have stated this in the following paragraph: “While attempting this advocacy we do not take any extreme positions about reductive Western Biomedicine or holistic Eastern Traditional Medicine. We feel that both these systems have strengths and weaknesses. We hypothesize that a synergistic confluence of these seemingly diverse systems may be possible through appropriate integrative approaches.”The book is for those who are interested in exploring some innovative and implementable ideas for the betterment in the healthcare sector. This is also for the academicians and researchers from Ayurveda, Yoga and biomedicine fields. Anthropologists and sociologists involved in alternative forms of healthcare too will find the book interesting.

Humans receive the vast majority of sensory perception through the eyes and ears. This non-technical book examines the everyday physics behind hearing and vision to help readers understand more about themselves and their physical environment. It begins with a thorough discussion of sound and light waves then goes on to discuss how our eyes and ears gather and process information from those waves. The ears and eyes are examined in their physical form in humans as well as in other members of the animal kingdom to show differences in how each receive information from the same waves and how hearing and vision may have evolved in humans. The book also discusses the perception of sound by examples such as sound intensity, decibels, and masking while also covering the basis of music and resonance. Vision and the perception of light and color are also discussed at length including the psychology of color perception and color mixing.

You have options, and most physicians will conveniently leave out the options detailed in this book, even though there are rigorous studies showing efficacy of non-CPAP options. No city in America knows how to mark death with more funerary panache than New Orleans. The pageants commemorating departed citizens are often in themselves works of performance art. A grand obituary remains key to this Stygian passage. And no one writes them like New Orleanian John Pope. Collected here are not just simple, mindless recitations of schools and workplaces, marriages, and mourners bereft. These pieces in Getting Off at Elysian Fields are full-blooded life stories with accounts of great achievements, dubious dabblings, unavoidable foibles, relationships gone sour, and happenstances that turn out to be life-changing.

To be sure, there are stories about Carnival monarchs, great philanthropists, and a few politicians. But because New Orleans embraces eccentric behavior, there are stories of people who colored way outside the lines. For instance, there was the doctor who used his plasma to make his flowers grow, and the philanthropist who took money she had put aside for a fur coat to underwrite the lawsuit that desegregated Tulane University. A letter carrier everyone loved turned out to have been a spy during World War II, and a fledgling lawyer changed his lifelong thoughts about race when he saw blind people going into a Christmas party through separate doors―one for white people and another for African Americans. Then there was the punctilious judge who got down on his hands and knees to edge his lawn―with scissors.

Because New Orleans funerals are distinctive, the author includes accounts of four that he covered, complete with soulful singing and even some dancing. As a popular, local bumper sticker indisputably declares, “New Orleans―We Put the Fun in Funeral.”

Getting Off at Elysian Fields: Obituaries from the New Orleans Times-Picayune, by John Pope

Review

“My new definition of ‘to die and go to heaven’ is to have your obituary written by John Pope. He makes the dead come alive in perfect gems of brilliant reporting and beautiful writing that ultimately form a rich and highly original portrait of a city that (thank God) is like no other in America.”

―Jane Chesnutt, former editor, Woman’s Day

“A charming and elegant salute to the dead. John Pope writes with grace, rendering the highlights of these lives in jewel-like biographical detail. What he has fashioned is a complex and layered narrative about the city of New Orleans recounted through the accomplishments of those who have given so freely of themselves over the past thirty-five years.”

―Sue Grafton, author of the bestselling Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mysteries series

“This collection of life stories is rich in character and culture, just like New Orleans. Taken together, these lives paint a picture of the times, highlighting key milestones of the twentieth century. The tales take us through storms and war, the struggle to dismantle segregation, and the fight against HIV/AIDS. You’ll enjoy meeting the extraordinary people who left a mark on New Orleans―a mafia boss, literary giants, carnival royalty, public servants, and the city’s taste makers.”

―Debbie Elliott, national correspondent, NPR

“Writing a well-crafted obituary blends the talents of a reporter and an historian. John Pope is a master of that subtle art and this sprightly collection of obituaries over four decades shows him at his best. In the process, the reader learns a great deal about New Orleans and its people. A stimulating and engaging introduction to the Big Easy.”

―Lewis L. Gould, author of The Republicans: A History of the Grand Old Party

“Don’t disrespect the lowly obit or its ink-stained writer. For in these pages, John Pope has written a history of twentieth-century New Orleans. The lives of these women and men not only shaped the city, but often influenced important events in the wider world. Herein you will meet with artists, AIDS activists, a spy, several chefs, an embalmer, a ‘duck girl,’ a ‘black cat.’ In short a cast of characters that roughly reflects the cast of the ongoing show that is New Orleans. These obits tell the story of this city as well as or better than many a history book.”

―Lolis Eric Elie, writer and filmmaker

“In this collection, the wonderful writer John Pope tells the story of modern New Orleans through his obituaries of the leaders and artists who shaped the city. A graceful writer and diligent reporter with a good heart, John has captured the essence of all these wonderful people.”

―Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs; Benjamin Franklin: An American Life; and Kissinger: A Biography

“John Pope knows New Orleans and its residents to a fare-thee-well. Getting Off at Elysian Fields presents a distinguished crowd of history makers and eccentrics―from a wartime-spy-turned-postal-worker, to a socialite who gave her fur coat money to help integrate a university, to the doctor who made it possible for Gary Cooper to star in High Noon. With each story, Pope reminds readers who and what the world has lost. He also reminds us why it’s important to say hello to strangers. In this town, you never know who you’ll meet.”

―Gwen Thompkins, veteran reporter and editor at the Times-Picayune and host of the public radio program Music Inside Out

“Jurists, Mardi Gras royalty, restaurateurs, mobsters, novelists, and French Quarter characters are brought to life in a collection of vividly detailed obituaries that do their subjects right while illuminating the past half century of New Orleans history. Writing on deadline, John Pope has delivered.”

―Lou Dubose, coauthor with Molly Ivins of Shrub: The Short and Happy Political Life of George W. Bush

By William Sabatier Pope's original obituaries ran in the print and/or the online editions of The Times-Picayune containing more background on these people's formal education, associations, awards, and family than the edited versions. A fascinating, well-researched and magnanimously written collection of representative lives, "high and low," lived at least partly if not wholly in one of the world's greatest little cities, New Orleans. The obituaries date from 9/11/1980 to 6/6/2014.

Everyone who loves New Orleans should get a kick out of the literate, wry, incisive obituaries that John Pope wrote over the last several decades. A volume to read over and over again. Lewis L. Gould

We have the best cemeteries to visit, and these obits tell some of the histories of the dearly departed. If you like New Orleans, it will mean even more to you.

The American Slave Coast offers a provocative vision of US history from earliest colonial times through emancipation that presents even the most familiar events and figures in a revealing new light. Authors Ned and Constance Sublette tell the brutal story of how the slavery industry made the reproductive labor of the people it referred to as “breeding women” essential to the young country’s expansion. Captive African Americans in the slave nation were not only laborers, but merchandise and collateral all at once. In a land without silver, gold, or trustworthy paper money, their children and their children’s children into perpetuity were used as human savings accounts that functioned as the basis of money and credit in a market premised on the continual expansion of slavery. Slaveowners collected interest in the form of newborns, who had a cash value at birth and whose mothers had no legal right to say no to forced mating.   This gripping narrative is driven by the power struggle between the elites of Virginia, the slave-raising “mother of slavery,” and South Carolina, the massive importer of Africans—a conflict that was central to American politics from the making of the Constitution through the debacle of the Confederacy. Virginia slaveowners won a major victory when Thomas Jefferson’s 1808 prohibition of the African slave trade protected the domestic slave markets for slave-breeding. The interstate slave trade exploded in Mississippi during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, drove the US expansion into Texas, and powered attempts to take over Cuba and other parts of Latin America, until a disaffected South Carolina spearheaded the drive to secession and war, forcing the Virginians to secede or lose their slave-breeding industry. Filled with surprising facts, fascinating incidents, and startling portraits of the people who made, endured, and resisted the slave-breeding industry, The American Slave Coast culminates in the revolutionary Emancipation Proclamation, which at last decommissioned the capitalized womb and armed the African Americans to fight for their freedom.

The American Slave Coast: A History of the Slave-Breeding Industry, by Ned Sublette, Constance Sublette

Review “A massive story of impressive research…” —Kirkus Reviews“The Sublettes offer an economic history and theory of slavery that is blunt in its assessment, unassailable in its argument and accessible to a general reader.” —The Guardian"Ned and Constance Sublette have provided the world with one of the best history books ever written about the United States. Nominally about the slave breeding industry in the US South, The American Slave Coast is actually a sweeping, in-depth survey of the nation known as the United States." —Counterpunch“Planters said that slavery was a peculiar domestic institution, a way of life. Abolitionists answered that it was the ugliest of businesses. For too long historians tried to split the difference but really took a side by calling it ‘the South,’ a society or a culture. Drawing on the most recent scholarship, Ned and Constance Sublette get it right: it was an industry, a particular market-tested brand with varieties adapted to its changing times and places. And like all industries it had a politics, too, that affected producers, consumers, and the workers who, in this peculiar case, were not only labor but also capital and, in the bodies of their children, product. The three-hundred-year story has rarely, if ever, been told so fully or so well.” —David Waldstreicher, The Graduate Center, City University of New York, author of Slavery's Constitution: From Revolution to Ratification “The American story cannot be told without a knowledge of its complete history. In The American Slave Coast, the Sublettes have painstakingly provided readers with both a compelling narrative and a well-documented and factual rendering. In addition, to its many other applications, The American Slave Coast will be extremely useful as an exemplar in the contemplated National Slavery Museum in Virginia.” —L. Douglas Wilder, Former Governor of Virginia and author of Son of Virginia: A Life in America's Political Arena“It is not a quick read. But it is an excellent and important one, and should be first on the list of anyone wanting to better understand slavery and race issues in America.” —San Diego Book Review“[T]his is a useful addition to the historiography of slavery.”  and “Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above.” —CHOICE

The grim details of a missing chapter in American history finally exposed By Ken McCarthy This book introduces to the general reader something that only serious historians of the slavery era grasp: Not only were terrorized human beings bought and sold as if tradable property, but enslaved women were often compelled to have children and those children, regardless of how they came into being, were very often taken away from their parents and sold as property too.To steal people's life, liberty and labor is an abomination, but to take their children from them in a systematic, "business-like" way stretches the limits of inhumanity to nearly incomprehensible extremes. This book has come along at just the right time where there are still millions of Americans who simply don't "get" depth of the evil that this long chapter of American history represents.

A Must Read By Janice I had no idea how many people were involved in slavery, how totally dependent our economy was on slavery, how many Presidents owned slaves, how slaves were viewed as collateral, how slavery as an investment depended on slave breeding and an ever expanding market. I was familiar with the treatment of women, the breakup of families, and the view of non-whites as inferior. I didn't realize the extent of destroying Native Americans or using them to destroy each other. An excellent book.

"No matter how bad we thought slavery was, it was even worse" By Andrew Robinson An extended quote from the coda of the book:"Antebellum slavery required a complex of social, legal, financial, and political institutions structured to maximize profits that flowed only to a small elite, while leaving the rest of the population poor. It wanted no legal oversight beyond the local, no public education, and no dissent. For laborers, it wanted no person-hood; no wages, education, privacy, clothing, human rights, civic identity, civil right, reproductive rights, or even the right to keep a stable family. It existed at the cost of everything else in the society, including the most basic notions of humanity."In his book, "The World That Made New Orleans", Ned Sublette introduced me to the practice of slave breeding. Children were conceived, brought to term, and raised to be sold as slaves. The mothers were forced to breed with male slaves, overseers, and slave owners, without their consent and against their will. The owners sold their own children as property. In this book, "The American Slave Coast", Ned and Constance Sublette present a detailed history of the United States as it pertains to the slave trade. The book demonstrates how America's cherished institutions were built to accommodate the slave trade. It demonstrates how the slave trade influenced so much of American history. The book gives a name to the practice from the previous book, the "capitalized womb." It describes how slaves formed the monetary system of the slave states, and how that money helped fund the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. The children of female slaves were "interest" to the slave owners and their creditors. The book details the creation and propagation of the institutions that created the conditions described in the quote. The book is long at 660+ pages. However, it is divided into short sections averaging several pages each. The sectioning of the book makes it a relatively easy read for its length. If you like to go beyond the history you were taught in school and discovery the stories that explain the world in which we now live, "The American Slave Coast" is one of those books. The first two sentences of the quote that begins this review could be seen to apply to conditions today. The authors do connect today's problems to the institutions of the slave trade. Remember that the trade was build over three centuries and ended only half that long ago. However, the authors go to length to show how real chattel slavery was so much worse than the social inequities of today. They state, "Over the years we have been researching our nation's history, we have seen repeatedly that no matter how bad we thought slavery was, it was even worse. There's no end to it."

Thousands of years ago, Asia was filled with forests that connected ecosystems from the foot of the Himalayas to the shores of the Pacific. Today, more than half of these woodlands are gone, mostly due to the demands of commerce and industry. And while conservation efforts are underway, more parcels disappear every year. On the Forests of Tropical Asia is a timely record of current forests and a much-needed explanation of the role humans played in the devastation and redevelopment of these forests. On the Forests of Tropical Asia is the first book to describe the forests of the entire tropical Asian region, from Sind to New Guinea. It opens with chapters on physical geography and geological history and then moves on to address forest and tree structure and dynamics, floristics, and symbiotic organisms, as well as genetics, evolutionary history, species diversity, and human impact. A final chapter covers future policy and practice options for saving what remains. Hundreds of full-color illustrations serve as a lasting testimony to the diverse forests. Ashton combines existing research with his own experience and collaborations, creating a broad, comprehensive understanding of forest variation. By presenting a clear picture of where the forests stand today, he offers a framework for future research, policy, and conservation.
