Saved by the sea and repaying the favor By Cynthia Barnett “As every son of a Holocaust survivor knows,” David Helvarg writes in his remarkable biography of sea and self, “there is no such thing as a steady state.” That line has come back to me many time as I’ve contemplated Helvarg’s sea-story and his message, so essential I wish everyone who’s ever bent for a seashell or enjoyed the squeak of sand under bare foot would read this book. Saved by the Sea is at once a love story of the world’s oceans and an unflinching expose’ of what we’ve done to them. The reporting is a much deeper dive than many books on ocean science. Helvarg, a long-time environmental journalist and former war correspondent, builds a convincing history of the militaristic roots of U.S. marine science, and how intense focus on defense shifted funding away from watersheds, estuaries, salt marshes, mangrove swamps, wild beaches, sea-grass meadows, barrier islands, coral reefs, and the marine wildlife that depend on them. Now, the seas, and we, are suffering the consequences. While the story of what we’ve done to our oceans is devastating – as is Helvarg’s personal story of love, lost – the son of Holocaust survivors does not lose hope. Reporting from around the globe, Helvarg finds that most people, in most places, “have the same commonsense understanding that clean air, clean water, productive soil, bountiful seas, and wild places – including untrammeled beaches and coral reefs – are not luxuries to be deferred by the poor during a process of rapid integration into the world market, but rather the essentials of a decent life.” Humans come from the sea, and many of us carry Helvarg’s instinctive feeling of being saved by the sea. His book is an inspired call to personal and collective action, telling us this: It is long past time to return the favor.

Written in an autobiographical style this makes author David Helvarg's words powerful and meaningful. He lived the adventures about which he writes. The book interesting, has many facts to back up Helvarg's feelings and observations. Saved by the Sea has moments of sadness, delight, honesty - it's all there. You don't have to be an environmentalist to find value in this book, it's a perfect read for pure enjoyment. What more can I say without saying too much and making my review hard to believe. Touching, educational - real and honest. I'm going to read this book over many times I'm sure, and I can easily recommend it to other readers and know they won't be disappointed.

A jounalist goes personal By Manuel Ramos The problem with journalists is that they want to find out everything personal about people they are writing about, but when it comes to them, their families and their friends, those are all off limits. Here, David, goes personal and in so doing gives us an amazing personal story about one of our most ignored environmental tragedies of our times. Afterall, every time we enjoy the oceans it looks more or less the same, but what really happened under that beautiful ocean should scare anyone. Very well done, David.
