A century after it began, we still struggle with the terrible reality of the First World War, often through republished photographs of its horrors: the muddy trenches, the devastated battlefields, the maimed survivors. Due to the crude film cameras used at the time, the look of the Great War has traditionally been grainy, blurred, and monochrome—until now. The First World War presents a startlingly different perspective, one based on rare glass plate photographs, that reveals the war with previously unseen, even uncanny, clarity. Scanned from the original plates, with scratches and other flaws expertly removed, these oversized reproductions offer a wealth of unusual moments, including scenes of men in training, pictures of African colonial troops on the Western front, landscapes of astonishing destruction, and postmortem portraits of Belgian soldiers killed in action. About the Author Carl De Keyzer is an acclaimed documentary photographer, photojournalist, and photography teacher. A member of Magnum Photos since 1994, he has published his work in multiple books, including, most recently, Oogspanning: Fotografie Carl De Keyzer 1981–1984. He resides in Ghent, Belgium. David Van Reybrouck is a historian and writer based in Brussels, Belgium.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great War Photo as Art Photo By Marco Antonio Abarca I have been collecting Great War photo books for a number of years. Most books use photographs to tell the history of the war. What separates "The First World War: Unseen Glass Plate Photographs" is that there is little interest in historical narrative. Magnum Photographer Cal de Keyzer's interest is in the Great War photo as art. For this project, he has combed the photograph archives of Western Europe and selected the most "beautiful" images that he could find. The result is a high quality art book with images printed on the finest paper. De Keyzer has an interesting idea and the images are stunning. If this is your cup of tea, this book is a must purchase.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great documentation of WWI By Frederic A stunningly beautiful book of often disturbing photographs of the First World War. These are large-scale prints from medium-format glass-plate negatives, really amazingly sharp and detailed. The wide range of subjects seeks to expand our image of the war, including civilian children, materiel production, and of course a variety of destruction (including a number of post-mortem portraits). Many of the plates do span two facing pages, but the production of the book is so good that there is very little loss to the gutter. There are also some autochromes, early color photographs. Produced in conjunction with an exhibit in Belgium, it's good to have this more widely available.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Nice Collection of WWI Photos with One Minor Flaw By W. Chang A pretty impressive collection of heretofore unseen photographs from World War I. The book is divided into several sections by photographers. Mostly black and white with one section being in color. Most cover two sides of the pages. The plates have been processed to remove scratches and lines that are often present in traditional b&w photograph from that era. The photographs are stark, gripping, and harrowing.The only thing that would have made the book better would be to put the captions on each photograph. Right now, all the captions for the photographs are put together at the beginning of each section. So, you need to flip the pages back and forth in order to be able to match and read the caption for the photograph. A small detail that would have made the book 5 stars. I don’t know why the editor/publisher didn’t think of it.
