9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Book By Jim Vangerud This is a great book! In this book we get a very clear understanding of the mind-body relationship. While we might think that this relationship is dominated by the mind, Sian Beilock provides compelling research documentation to show that the path between the mind and body is a two-way street. The book covers a large number of topics including how movement enhances creativity, the importance of gesture in freeing up brain power, the vital role of exercise in brain development and health, and the powerful, positive effect that nature, and particularly green spaces, have on our executive control functions. The body has enormous influence on the mind, and we can use the knowledge presented in this book to shape how our minds function and improve our lives in the process.Although the book is based on solid scientific scholarship, the author also interjects many stories that demonstrate how this science manifests itself in everyday life. These stories will help illuminate the concepts for anyone who does not have a background in the science of embodied cognition. Although some of the book's conclusions seem self-evident, the scientific evidence presented also reveals many conclusions that will be counterintuitive to most readers. This book surprises, delights, and illuminates many puzzling and pertinent life issues. You will come away with a much deeper understanding of how your body and mind can work together to create a much more rewarding and meaningful life for you and those you love. I highly recommend this book.

Good but missing a summary of previous work By Amazon Customer In general, the book presents very interesting and practical applications of embodied cognition. It was exciting to find out how some teachers are applying these concepts in real settings.However, the book gives the impression that embodied cognition is a completely new field. In an interview (http://lit.newcity.com/2015/03/18/using-our-bodies-to-make-our-minds-better/), the author says that ‘…what we do with our bodies and our surroundings have a big impact on how we learn and how we feel. No one was really telling that story. Everyone was telling the story about what happens inside our head’.Embodied cognition is certainly not new. With the exception of Lakoff, the contribution of many scholars was not included here. I believe that in addition to research that most people can relate to, the book should have included a summary of the work carried out before, apart from those recent studies that support the book’s argument.It is not my intention to diminish the quality of the work. The book is well written and it does offer valuable information, but for me the lack of a summary of previous work is a significant omission. For that reason I only give it 3 stars. It tells tons about how the body and mind work together and if exceptionally well research and the type of book you may want to reread parts of again and again to get to the full depth and understanding. It may help you get a job, learn a new skill, regulate emotions...lots of things to think about if you are raising children or if you are dealing with situations like a spouse or a parent with aging dementia. Motivation for exercise, too.
