About the Author Dr Martin Brammah received both his MA in Natural Sciences and his PhD in Zoology from the University of Cambridge, UK. He is co-author of the paper Genetic divergence between and within two subspecies of Laudakia stellio on islands in the Greek Cyclades, based on his PhD research, which was published in The Herpetological Journal in 2010. Dr Brammah is an Associate Member of the Society of Biology and a full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). He currently works as an ecological consultant and lives in Cambridgeshire with his beautiful wife, two dogs and a room full of bettas.

Excellent, complete and up-to-date By Claire Pavia Excellent book, very complete, with 393 pages.This is a book about Betta splendens that covers all aspects of the fish, including fighter varieties, show varieties and pets.Of course there are chapters about the origins, maintenance, reproduction, forms and colors of Bettas.It is very up-to-date and includes the latest knowledge on the subject.The author wanted to put all the necessary information concerning Betta spendens in one place, and has fully succeeded.

By Aleks Breton thank you for only little sleep last night Martin , it's hard to have a break from reading this book ! A lot of stories, and all belong together, written in a heartwarming style. some parts touched me , and other parts made me laugh (for example : you paid 100$ for a fighter you haven't seen and the seller is (probably) laughing all the way to the bank) . the chapter about fighters is highly interesting , I knew some facts from asian forums , but most people here can't imagine that fighters have such a "good" life and that it's not in the interests of the breeders that the fish is dead after a fight . and another interesting thing - it's known from mammal genetics (dogs,horses,cats,etc) that color is linked to behavior/aggression , it wouldn't surprise me if it's similar in fish. This book contents all you can , must and want to know about bettas --- it's a pleasure to read this book , easy to understand and for that you are a scientist it's not dry - you know how to fascinate the reader . high five !

This is one of the FEW betta books that is not simply rehashing general information about bettas. Clearly extensive online research went into this book, and it nicely summarizes specific aspects of the hobby. My only (slight) criticism is that it was very text heavy and could have used more pictures or graphs/tables to enhance the written content, however it is completely understandable that more could not have been incorporated - the book is already the size of a Bible! (Please see photo for size!) It is very well-written and simple to follow. If you want to really know the history behind bettas, then this is your book!
