By Donald Fisher The 2015 Amplified Bible is a tremendous advance over the previous edition. The amplifications are not as confusing and not as frequent. This edition truly is no longer a "smorgasbord" Bible where the reader was left to pick and choose from among various (sometimes conflicting) choices for a given passage. In addition the entire work has been recast so that a verse may be read either with or without amplification. This in itself is a great improvement. The editors have also now added section headings which help to break the text at appropriate places.All of the repetitious footnotes in the New Testament referring to the various lexicons are gone. The footnotes are much more meaningful and helpful, as well as more plentiful in the Old Testament. The English has been updated so that it really comes very close to being an update to the updated New American Standard Bible; not surprising since the sponsor of both the NASB and the new 2015 AMP is the Lockman Foundation. The preface explains that the underlying basic translation is a literal equivalent of the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek text. From my evaluation thus far I believe that is an accurate statement.As a pastor I never felt completely comfortable recommending the previous Amplified Bible because of the smorgasbord approach. I felt that it took too much time to explain the why's and wherefore's behind the amplifications for the average reader. I have no such hesitation with this new addition, and wholeheartedly recommend it. This compact edition, however, is very compact, with extremely small print. For some wanting the AMP to be as portable as possible, it will be fine. But it is very small.
