Although the book is quite short, it is packed with a wealth of information about eastern box turtles. The book is amply illustrated with photos and drawings. It offers an interesting perspective on monitoring turtles, as Anne Allbright Smith is one of very few people who has used dogs to track and monitor a turtle species. She makes it clear that her Australian cattle dogs' extensive training is crucial to her success, and she notes that she has proper licensure to legally handle the turtles.I was very interested in how she IDed individual turtles and in the different non-canine methods used to track turtles' movements. You will also learn about their life cycle and the threats to their survival, as well as ways we can reduce the inadvertent harm of, say, mowing a field.Even though Allbright Smith stopped naming the turtles early in her decade-long research, you can tell she has grown fond of some of her subjects. Will #12 and #40 find each other again? I sure hope so, and I suspect the author does as well!

The author writes in a clear, conversational tone, displaying both great respect and great passion not only for her wise dogs and beguiling box turtles but for all the flora and fauna on her extensive property. Her adventures in seeking and documenting the turtles with the inestimable aid of her highly trained dogs is filled with humor and suspense that carry the reader along in a sustained state of delighted anticipation. Her photographs add so much to her stories. Above all, her dedication to her turtles in all kinds of weather reveals her total commitment to her tasks. I'm not a naturalist, but Anne Smith made everything on her property come alive in three-dimensional color and left me with a greater respect for our natural surroundings. As a quick, inspiring read in one sitting, I recommend this book enthusiastically to all.

The Silence of the Bell by Anne Allbright Smith is a delightful and unusual book about tracking Eastern Box Turtles for research purposes with the help of two Australian Cattle Dogs. Smith started looking for turtles in 2006, after she and her husband discovered there was a major turtle thruway on their property in upstate New York. The dogs were able to navigate thick vegetation and detect the tiny hatchlings with their sense of smell. The dogs are off leash when searching for the turtles and Smith cannot always see them in the dense vegetation, so a bell is attached to their collars. When the bell falls silent, it signals that the dog has found a turtle.According to Smith, training Anzac and Diggy to track turtles was relatively easy because scenting comes naturally to dogs. Of course, it probably didn’t hurt that Anzac and Diggy had American Kennel Club titles in obedience, rally, agility and tracking. They also worked as therapy dogs, bringing cheer to the elderly. Once a year, Smith and the Wallkill Valley Land Trust sponsor Turtle Day. Humans assume the job of finding the turtles and Anzac and Diggy get the day off.The tracking role of the Australian Cattle Dogs is what interested me in The Silence of the Bell initially, but once I started reading the book I found myself intrigued with the lives of Eastern Box Turtles. Smith writes about the science in a down to earth and entertaining way. I strongly recommend this book.
