Lee Raines is a recently orphaned young man, aimlessly drifting west through the Rocky Mountains, when he finds himself fighting for his life against a powerful gang in a strange, violent, war. A car breakdown leaves Lee stranded in a small Montana logging town where battle lines are being drawn in a war he only vaguely understands. When the inevitable explosion happens, he finds himself caught in the middle. His life is changed forever as he's forced to fight for survival in a mountainous world alien to anything he has ever known. Lee makes friends and gradually comes to grips with the loss of his parents as he wanders through the mountains surrounding the little town. But while in mountains, he innocently witnesses crimes being committed during the confusion surrounding the local conflicts. Not wanting to be involved, Lee makes plans to leave the area. However, before he can leave, Lee finds himself in a shooting war, forced to defend himself against a powerful crime boss and his brutal henchmen. Finally the shooting stops, the sheriff makes arrests, and the known criminals are convicted. Peace seems to have finally returned to the Montana mountains. Lee settles in and takes a job while he tries to put his life back together. But the fight isn't over. It takes a brutal ambush to make Lee and the townspeople realize that the problems were more complex than anyone had realized. A final gun battle, a battle that results in real Rocky Mountain Justice, ends the war. It also puts Lee and his friends on a path that they will follow for many years to come. The Deadly River effectively combines a classic adventure story with both heartfelt emotion and a theme that will leave one thinking long after the book is read. It's a great read that combines the pathos of a young orphan's plight with the exhilaration and adventures that come with gun battles and fist fights deep in the Montana mountains.

About the Author Jeff Noonan is a Montana native who retired in 2001 as the president of a nationwide corporation. He is married with four children and eight grandchildren. As a young man, Jeff worked as a laborer for farms, ranches, lumber mills, and a railroad. He then served in both the Army and the Navy, retiring from the Navy as a commissioned warrant officer. While in the Navy, he commissioned five ships at Bath Iron Works, worked in guided missile research at White Sands Missile Range, and served two and a half years in Viet Nam operations. At the time of his retirement, he was a combat systems officer in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. After leaving the military, Jeff worked his way up from an entry-level technical position to become the executive-vice president of a 900-person corporation with offices worldwide. During this era, he moved two companies into the impoverished city of Camden, New Jersey, in order to provide jobs where none existed. Then he took over a troubled seven-person North Carolina company and turned it into a solvent corporation with over 250 employees. In recognition of these efforts, a U.S. Congressional Committee officially awarded him their 1999 North Carolina Businessman of the Year plaque during a Washington, DC, ceremony. Jeff sold his business interests in 2001 and retired to his hometown where he was soon elected president of the Community Council, a position he held for four years. He was also the president of the County Chamber of Commerce for two years. His bright red hair has long since turned white and partially vanished, but he still lives very happily in western Montana.

I sent a copy to my teenage grandson because it is an excellent book also about public policy By Nehemiah Moore I could hardly stop reading this most recent book by Jeff Noonan. I sent a copy to my teenage grandson because it is an excellent book also about public policy, how it gets made, who makes it, and citizen's responsibility. Besides being an exciting book to read, the political problems associated with ecological responsibility are fairly presented from the corporate side as well as the consumer side. He also points the way to responsible political interaction which could give us the best of both worlds. I really liked this book!

As a Montana resident I can only hope readers grasp the significance of the underlying ecological message the author conveys. This is a real problem in all of our western states and needs to be addressed at the highest levels or we won't have any wilderness areas left in the US. Please take the time to read the author's notes.
