Losing a dearly loved family member or friend suddenly, unexpectedly, and tragically jars us at our very core. We shudder at the thought of it. When that loss results from a suicide it defies and assaults everything in us. The unthinkable is often considered not survivable. In Surviving the Unthinkable theology professor Don J. Payne exits the classroom and invites you into the chambers of his personal experience of that indescribable loss. This intensely personal narrative traces his process through shock, grief, anger, fear, and a host of unexpected sensations to redemption and hope. Yet, he offers no psychological analysis or formula to make it all OK. Here you will find hope-gritty, realistic hope that will deepen the resources of anyone who walks the unthinkable path of losing someone they love to suicide. Life on the other side of such a nightmare will never be the same, but there is life and it can be good. Don Payne gives voice to the experience in a way that extends a healing hand to any who wonder if they can survive.

It's not filled with platitudes and those "pat" answers that are so infuriating to someone in pain. But instead it's filled with very personal insight and thoughtful observation from a Christian world view that will prove helpful to those left behind from suicide.

Don really hit the nail on the head when it comes to the emotions felt and the healing process as well as a spritual understanding after such an incredible loss.If someone thinks they wouldn't be missed, they need to read this in order to see how their loved ones would be so effected.

"Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them." Luke 24:15The author of Surviving the Unthinkable has not written a rulebook for (in his words) those who "have joined a club that no one wants to belong to"-- that is, those left behind in the wake of a suicide. He has not chosen to list the steps of grieving as some would. But instead he has waited on the path for those who are coming behind him, and started a conversation, sharing what might be around the corner in the process of walking through the unimaginable pain and loss of what has happened.Though the writer is a theologian, I saw this book as a down-to-earth, personal perspective of the author's own life-changing experience. He offers hope without pat answers, speaks to the grief, anger, fear, confusion and sorrow that each must pass through on the journey, and gives good reason for "looking up" to the God of all hope along the way. Most importantly, he shares the path of healing by walking alongside the reader, perhaps with the intent, that the greater healing will come to each person when they, in turn, do the same. I recommend this gentle, sensitive conversation to all who have been voted into the "club" and want not just to survive, but to keep thriiving. It can be read in an afternoon, but you will want to linger much longer.
