It reminds me of Odenwald’s other excellent book about space ‘Patterns in the Void By Susan Clermont I recently purchased Odenwald’s new book Exploring Quantum Space, and was impressed by his ability to turn something as trivial as the nature of space into a major life-and-death battle among modern physicists! It reminds me of Odenwald’s other excellent book about space ‘Patterns in the Void: Why nothing is important’. This time, he spends a lot less time with his own personal ruminations, and gives a fast-paced guide to how modern science deals with this invisible enigma.I never really thought about how mathematics is used as a lens to ‘see’ the hidden things in our world. Now I understand how this works a bit better, and some of the pitfalls in relying on mathematical imagery. My favorite example in this book is how electronics engineers design radios by drawing diagrams, but that the symbols in the diagrams for resistors and transistors have nothing to do at all with how electrons move through the system to ‘create’ a radio. The diagram is just one tool that we use to visualize what a radio actually ‘is’. He turns this around to describe how most of the diagrams physicists use to visualize space like strings and loops are not really pictures of space at all, but just diagrams and tools for doing calculations.I used to not pay any attention to the fact that our world is 3-D until this book convinced me that this is a huge conundrum in science. I loved his comment about the invisible force that somehow reaches out from The Beyond, and demands that every scrap of matter and energy must only move in 3-D and not 5 or 1133 or something else. I have heard famous physicists on TV talk about space, but they always seem to talk past this very simple, and elegant, realization that seems so obvious to state but no one ever discusses it. They rush on to describe their elaborate ideas with computer graphics, but the essential enigma of what space is and how to think about it seems to get lost in the colorful TV narrative. No one has ever suggested in these programs that all the fancy CGI may just be describing what the tool is for a calculation and not what space actually looks like.But in Odenwald’s book, he plays with the idea of space by approaching it from many different angles. He sneaks up on it wearing the hats of the mathematician, the philosopher, the astronomer and the quantum physicist, and in the end I think he brilliantly succeeds in explaining to the layman what all this hoopla is about and why it is bizarre beyond imagining. Kudos to his authoritative writing and his sense of artistry in painting such a lovely picture of the mysterious nothingness of space!
