Journey of Dreams- Dreams have a way of infusing themselves into our souls–becoming an indivisible part of who we are. Five lives irrevocably change when their greatest longings become their new reality–and for one, vice versa. The Journey of Dreams series is Contemporary Christian Fantasy, exploring the desires of our hearts and how the Lord meets them. ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Introspection–this place invites it. I’ve never allowed myself the time to pause and get to know myself. My father taught me it was weak. Focus on the prize–eyes off yourself. The goal matters. You are just the instrument to get you there. Here… Is this what that goal was and I never knew it? The peaks above, the trees that stand tall beside me as if my own personal bodyguards. I am alive–maybe for the first time in my life–and I think it’s because I’m dead. When Tony arrives in Highlands, he must come to grips with a world that embraces birth defects as beautiful and to be celebrated–even those easily corrected. Balancing the beauty of utter acceptance and the wisdom of when to alter the “workmanship of God” creates tension between Tony and the Highlanders. The Journey of Dreams series explores themes in the Christian life from a different perspective–from a world that can’t exist anywhere but in the dreams of the people who live there. Editorial Review Ms. Havig drops a modern young athlete (nearly naked!) into a remote, bizarre community. He is confused. He is horrified. He wonders if he has died and is in some sort of afterlife. And then, with perfect, almost elegant pacing, the story unfolds, revealing a fascinating world in which people have unquestioningly accepted every circumstance as the will of – gifts from – God. Our hero struggles with understanding their beliefs – and so does the reader. The themes of extreme submission and gratitude are thought-provoking in this context. ~Cathe Swanson

Highlands is a Swift-esque tale of adventure, as the main character, Tony, journeys into a world and culture far from his own. Havig's account is fanciful and entertaining as Tony explains anachronistic modern American culture to his Highlands hosts. To call Highlands "just a work of fiction," however, would miss the point. Once again, Highlands displays Chautona Havig's flair for exploring serious theological questions through fiction. Highlands plunges readers into a plot that requires wrestling with how a good God permits suffering. Through Highlands, Havig confronts head-on the modern American idolatry of physical perfection, Highlands explores questions of contentment and joy through change, in physical suffering, in grief, and even in suicide--subjects that make even seasoned pastors uncomfortable. When Tony is plunged inexplicably and almost naked into "Highlands," readers are forced to wrestle with how we deal with a "new normal." Will Tony run away to find his way back or trust that God knew what He was doing to make the best of it? In doing so, Havig forces readers to ask uncomfortable questions: Havig explores tension between on the one hand accepting our lot for God's glory and, on the other, struggling to improve and to ease suffering and make the best of our situation. Highlands demonstrates that contentment, joy, and peace, are found in neither extreme but in daily trusting and thanking a loving Father.Highlands focus is on Tony's development of spiritual sight as he learns contentment-- while still having questions, while still suffering grief, and while still enduring suffering. The book, however, is as much about community as it is about Tony. Other characters are one-dimensional, and are shown in their reaction to and interactions with Tony. This is appropriate, in Highlands, as this is how all of us perceive the world. Havig displays a beautiful picture of how a Christ-like community functions--helping and loving one another. Havig demonstrates how our calling, love, and meaning are found in community. Yet, Havig does not shy away from confronting painful parts of community--the damage of a community's rush to judgment and the harsh individual consequences of rigid religious platitudes. If readers are looking for a light, care-free read, Highlands likely will not fit the bill. Highlands, rather, is a book that forces readers to question our assumptions, to search Scripture, and to develop our own spiritual sight.

But it was so good I bought it anyway. It took me three reads to understand Prairie (the first book in the series) well enough to review it. I was engaged with the characters in this book almost immediately. I felt for Tony's embarrassment at suddenly appearing in front of women and children in the snow almost naked. He had no idea how he got to Highlands and thought his swim team buddies had played an immense practical joke on him. But as the seasons pass he forms new relationships and begins to accept his new life. This book made me laugh and cry (Eron) and think about how much in life we also accept as truth where it may really be something totally different. I liked how Tony and the people of Highlands talked differences out. They were willing to try new things to help the community. And I am so glad for the epilogue to show the subsequent lives of the character While this book is very different from most of this author's other books, I think most people will really enjoy it.

By Edie WARNING: You might want to know ahead of time that this story deals with two very heavily emotional issues: birth defects and suicide. They are handled in a very thoughtful, thought-provoking way and are woven deftly throughout the story.Highlands is a wonderful tale of a young man named Tony who woke up in an unknown world vastly different from his own. This is the story of how he come to accept his new life, along with the struggles, joys, and lessons he endures that make him a better man. Of course, there’s romance. Will Tony get his girl or will the big, handsome, brawny guy be the one? Does Tony love her truly? Does he really want to get married? Who is the mysterious trouble maker in the community? Read it to find out - and enjoy the wonderful, first-person voice narrating the story. What a wonderful story with lots of nuggets of wisdom woven into it. It’s typical Chautona fare – enjoyable, delightful, and just plain fun to read - all while making you think about everyday life and some of its very difficult issues.
