By Don Kidwell No doubt this artist could paint some pretty portraits which would explain him being hired by Rockerfeller and Roosevelt, and I really enjoyed the sights of Venice (have to go there one day) but it was the ending portrait "Gassed" showing WW1 men having been blinded by the chemicals used during warfare which I found absolutely gripping and needing no words to describe the horrors of war. Very good book!

Mark's Marvellous Book: Learning about Jesus through the Gospel, by Alan Mann

Review While the children's book market offers a number of beautiful, theologically rich, and gospel-centered volumes, Mark's Marvellous Book by Alan Mann offers something I haven't seen before: A children's story Bible driven not by topic but by the text. Mann presents Bible stories from Mark's Gospel with clarity, precision, and a simplicity worth imitating. If you want to learn how to teach Bible stories to your children, read this book to them and learn to do what Mann does.Mark's Marvellous Book has 18 chapters, each focusing on a single episode in the life of Jesus. Each chapter has:* a one-word title stating the main point* 5 storybook pages, applying the story's main point to a 4-6-year-old child* a single-page explanation of the Bible story and its main point* a memory verse from the story, again highlighting the main pointPerhaps you see where I'm going: Alan Mann gets the main points of these stories! And he centres his storytelling around those main points. (Dear fellow North Americans: Please don't be put off by the anglicized spellings of words like centre and marvellous. This book will serve all English-speaking families.)Since Mann doesn't cover every episode from Mark, I felt a little misled by the advertisement labelling this book "A commentary on Mark for kids." Yet the book still won over both me and my two young daughters. I could barely get the book away from them so I could finish reading it for this review. The physical volume meets all my standard expectations for a children's book: strong cover, good binding, shiny paper, sturdiness to take a beating. I'm grateful to Christian Focus Publications for providing a review copy.I hope we see more books like this in the future. Mann has a great thing going here, and I would love to see similar storybook Bibles that expound texts with such skill. ~ Peter Krol

About the Author Alan Mann is an aeronautical engineer with a passion for youth work, art, science fiction and lego. He is from the United Kingdom and is an elder at the Philip Street church in Bristol.

Nice Resource for Families By Joey Parker The purpose of Alan Mann's new book Mark's Marvelous Book is clearly stated on the back cover:This book explains the Gospel of Mark for young children, so that they might know who Jesus us, what he achieved on the cross, and understand what it means to follow him.The way in which the book teaching through Mark's gospel is very unique which makes itself a useful book for parents and their children. Mark's Marvelous Book is divided into 18 chapters that present different "stories" from throughout Mark's gospel. Each story focuses on a short passage of Scripture and presents the truths of the passage in a clear and easy way for children to understand. Each chapter begins with a short story or list ("Things that don't do...", "How to...") that serves as a lead-in to the lesson from the passage of Scripture. These short lead-in sections are helpful to engage children and grab their attention and they all seem to transition well into the Scripture. Each lesson/story from Scripture is covered on two pages. The first page is about a 3-4 paragraph teaching on the passage. The second page contains a Scripture reference and an illustration. The illustrations in this book are very well done. They add to every page and greatly enhance the book.Mark's Marvelous Book is a wonderful resource for families with small kids. Christian Focus recommends the following ages: Read to Me 3-5, and Read myself 6-8. This book could easily serve as a family devotional for small children, or a short story before bed. It could also be used, and expanded upon to serve as an extra resource for teaching a class of young children. However a family or church would choose to use it, it will surely be a blessing to parents and their children.I received a copy of this book from Christian Focus Publications in exchange for an honest review.

The Long Goodbye: Lewy Body Dementia - Alzheimer's First Cousin, by Barbara Secklin

About the Author Barbara J. Secklin is 84 years young. She has seven children who include retired business owners, published authors, a college professor, a physicist, teachers and a computer tech. She also has 19 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. After a 30-plus year love affair with the state of Arizona, she moved back to her home state of Wisconsin, but still cannot get used to the winters. Besides writing poetry, she’s enjoyed many creative pursuits through the years, some of which are painting, pottery and sculpture, designing jewelry, and teaching wire wrapping and weaving. While in Arizona she also spent time camping, hiking, and swimming; and together with her husband of nearly 56 years, traveling the United States - exploring many of the National Parks. Barbara is an avid reader and puzzle-book aficionado, which in turn, some claim, has turned her into a walking thesaurus. She now spends most mornings as the editor of her daughter’s novels, for which she is paid exorbitant amounts of coffee. In the future, she plans to co-author a novel with said daughter, and one day hopes to revisit her beloved Arizona.

"For those who like their history rich in vivid details, Derek Beck has served up a delicious brew in this book....This may soon become everyone's favorite." ―Thomas Fleming, author of Liberty! The American Revolution

A sweeping, provocative new look at the pivotal years leading up to the American Revolution

The Revolutionary War did not begin with the Declaration of Independence, but several years earlier in 1773. In this gripping history, Derek W. Beck reveals the full story of the war before American independence-from both sides.

Spanning the years 1773-1775 and drawing on new material from meticulous research and previously unpublished documents, letters, and diaries, Igniting the American Revolution sweeps readers from the rumblings that led to the Boston Tea Party to the halls of Parliament-where Ben Franklin was almost run out of England for pleading on behalf of the colonies-to that fateful Expedition to Concord which resulted in the shot heard round the world. With exquisite detail and keen insight, Beck brings revolutionary America to life in all its enthusiastic and fiery patriotic fervor, painting a nuanced portrait of the perspectives, ambitions, people, and events on both the British and the American sides that eventually would lead to the convention in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776.

Captivating, provocative and inspiring, Igniting the American Revolution is the definitive history of these landmark years in our nation's history, whose events irrevocably altered the future not only of the United States and England, but the whole world.

" Integrating compelling personalities with grand strategies, political maneuverings on both sides of the Atlantic, and vividly related incidents, Igniting the American Revolution pulls the reader into a world rending the British Empire asunder." – Samuel A. Forman, author of the biography Dr. Joseph Warren

Igniting the American Revolution: 1773-1775, by Derek W. Beck

Review "Air Force officer and debut author Beck evidently relishes his subject, and he gives a fully fleshed portrait of the major patriots, both American and British...Beck's description of the "spreading flames of rebellion" and the taking of the forts at Crown Point and Ticonderoga is as engaging as fiction. A knowledgeable, elegant account full of elaborate depictions, complete with a thorough bibliography." - Kirkus"Recommended for history lovers, those who want a refresher on the American Revolution, and those who enjoy quality nonfiction." - STARRED Library Journal"It is in the clear, engaging telling of a complex story that Igniting the American Revolution by Derek W. Beck stands out. Rather than telling a heroic tale of heroic Patriots defying a tyrannical monarchy, Beck shows us the well-meaning efforts of participants on both sides to take what they believed to be just and legal courses of action. " - Journal of the American Revolution

About the Author Derek W. Beck is an historian whose history writing has appeared in multiple history journals, scholarly works, and reviews and has been cited by The Boston Globe among other publications. Forman In the way of disclosure I first crossed paths with Mr. Beck several years ago as we were both researching fine points of the Siege of Boston among the Thomas Gage papers at the Clements library in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Through that and subsequent interactions I became aware of his meticulous attention to scholarly detail.Joseph Warren, my biographical subject, is one of many characters that Beck deftly incorporates into his account of the British North American colonies on the brink of rebellion. Along the way he brings insights into his subjects’ characters, while jumping freely and smoothly between authentic detail and the arc of major events. His telling of the origin of the American Revolution emphasizes key personalities amongst colonial Americans as well as British leaders. In his characterization of Warren, Derek Beck has performed original scholarship in reconstructing this lesser-known American founder’s personal life as well as forensics utilizing postmortem pictures of Warren’s remains. Comparable original insights come fast and furious, such as a truer account of opening battles of Lexington and Concord.'Igniting the Revolution' is a refreshing and, I believe, one of the best ever written accounts of a critical portion of the formation of the United States as a nation. Beck’s novelistic, almost cinematic presentation makes this a particularly delightful read. In addition to gaining readers, I hope that future popular media renderings of the era - such as the recent History Channel 'Sons of Liberty,' will base their presentations on Mr. Beck’s work, as opposed to presenting fanciful fiction as historical fact. The real story is far more compelling. In a project of this size and scope, one is bound to find aspects with which to disagree. One thing that comically stuck out for me was the characterization of British lieutenant colonel and later general Francis Smith, who led the British soldiers confronting American militiamen on the iconic Lexington Green at the outset of the Revolutionary War. Smith’s chief sin would appear to have been obesity. Never mind that Benjamin Franklin could also be presented in such a bariatric manner. In Smith’s case the physical characterization is especially disparaging. It seems to be shorthand for him being slow of mind and dimwitted. Picky, picky! For me this was the exception among hundreds of pages and many expertly presented and entertaining vignettes. This book is particularly strong in characterizing the breakdown of civil government and subsequent outbreak of hostilities. The work is strongest for pivotal events circa 1773 to 1775 in the Northeast and to a lesser extent other geographies.General readers will be delighted with the main flow of the narrative. Specialists and scholars will be impressed by extensive footnotes and appendices. These amply demonstrate the broad base of primary source material on which Derek Beck builds his engaging book. They also present alternate viewpoints and interpretations for those aspects equivocal in primary sources. General readers may want to skip over the appendices, losing nothing of the broad sweep and excitement of the narrative.I hope 'Igniting the Revolution' finds its place among the classic renderings of the American Revolution, both for its readability and base of accurate and often new scholarship. I believe readers will look forward to further contributions from this new voice chronicling American history in a most engaging and authoritative manner.- Samuel A. Forman, author of the new young adult novel 'Twenty-One Heroes' and the American founders biography Dr. Joseph Warren: The Boston Tea Party, Bunker Hill, and the Birth of American Liberty.

A Great Book, But A Little Limited in Scope By Andy in Washington The America Revolution is one of my favorite periods of history, so I am always on the lookout for new sources of information and analysis of those events. In this work, Derek W. Beck concentrates on events that lead up to the “formal” war, mostly in and around Boston in 1773-75.=== The Good Stuff ===* The book was easy-to-read. Beck writes in a somewhat informal style, with normal length sentences and paragraphs. He avoids language designed to impress, has minimal use of 18th century quotations, something I always struggle with.* Beck has research his topic well. There are a few points I had never read before, but they were well supported by footnotes and reference material. In fact, roughly half the book is notes, appendices, and other supporting material. This keeps the text lively, although at the cost of burying quite a bit of material in the references.* The bulk of the text is centered around three major events; The Boston Tea Party; The Battle of Lexington and Concord; and The Capture of Fort Ticonderoga. Each of these narratives is self-contained, well written, and complete. There is an honest analysis of these events, including errors, successes and heinous acts of both sides, and Beck is a reasonably impartial observer who justifies his opinions. The author also explains the background of these events and the consequences of them.* Finally, Beck is able to include those small events that make history come alive: Paul Revere at the Boston Tea Party; Parliament patiently waiting for the Bostonians to calm down and relax (obviously they have never been to a Patriots game); how a few “small” incidents, such as British delays and the speed of Paul Revere’s horse, affected the Battle of Lexington. The author weaves these and other descriptions into a complete and comprehensive look at pre-Revolutionary Massachusetts.* The description of the Battle of Lexington and Concord is a marvelous summary of the battle, its tactics and the reasons for the American successes.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* Ninety percent of the book occurs in and around Boston, and Beck concentrates his narrative on a few events. I kept waiting for the narrative to branch out, but the focus stayed narrow. To be fair, I am sure Beck would make the case that these events WERE the beginning of the Revolution.* The book ends, rather abruptly, when the Massachusetts militia becomes a formally organized force. In my opinion, one of the most interesting things about the Revolution was that it really didn’t have a definite beginning, or ending, something the Colonists used to their advantage. I would have liked to see a discussion the rise of the mid-Atlantic and Southern militias, as well as the political initiatives begun in these areas.=== Summary ===While I would have preferred and expanded scope and more details on the politics and public-relations side of the Revolution, I enjoyed the book. It is impeccably referenced, but yet easy and pleasant to read. Even though it covered mostly familiar events, there was enough new information and analysis to make it worthwhile, even for readers well versed on this period of history.=== Disclaimer ===I was able to read an advance copy through the courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. the years leading up to the Revolution are presented more as a fascinating game of chess than as a battle between good and evil By Tamesin Eustis Derek Beck’s first book, Igniting the American Revolution: 1773-1775, is sure to ignite new appreciation for the Revolutionary period. In this age of “popularized” versions of American history, which too often sacrifice accuracy for glitz, Beck has attained that magical balance of truth in reporting and engaging storytelling. He retells familiar stories (the Boston Tea Party, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and Ticonderoga) by drawing on a vast well of original letters and diaries, which allows the characters to tell much of the story themselves and injects colorful realism at all points of the tale. Lesser-known events such as the early Powder Alarms and back-room dealings are also presented in an equally engaging way. Kudos also goes to Beck for not picking a particular hero or villain – American or British – and instead emphasizing the “grey areas” of human responses to world-shattering events. From committee meetings to the battlefield, the years leading up to the Revolution are presented more as a fascinating game of chess than as a battle between good and evil. It’s a refreshing approach, and proves that truth is just as, if not more, riveting than fiction. Aside from the very readable main body of the book, Beck also presents numerous appendices and extensive notes, a treasure trove for researchers and anyone who wishes to delve more deeply into the details of military maneuverings. The years 1773-1775 were only just the beginning of America’s revolutionary history, and this reader hopes that Derek Beck will continue to see us through with future titles.

Now, to mark its Golden Anniversary, Southern Living presents a gorgeous gift book that tells the true story of the South as only Southerners and Southern Living can tell it. Filled with evocative images, fascinating stories, revealing explorations, and time-honored recipes, Southern Living 50 Years is about how Southerners live, what they value, how they cook, how they welcome people into their homes. By Paul Halberstadt This book is a super MUST have BEST read if you have enjoyed Southern Living magazine from its beginnings in the mid 60s. I'm a subscriber from the very late 70s and have been ever since. This is one great coffee table book that people will pick up. Trust me. Even if they are Northerners like myself. LOL. Amazing stories of SL history, past articles and vintage photos from the past make this a super gift for someone who subscribes to SL. Except for an awful period when M.Lindsay Bierman took over the magazine as Editor in Chief in 2010 till 2014 when the magazine sunk to new lows and thankfully they replaced him with Sid Evans, the magazine remains great today. A definite gift to someone they will totally enjoy.

Ever since men have been able to think they must have puzzled out for themselves some way of accounting for their own beginnings. Every savage tribe with whom we have any intimate acquaintance has some story that accounts for the origin of the tribe at least, and often for the beginning of the world. These stories are handed down from generation to generation and are scarcely questioned in the thought of most men. In early Greece there was a succession of men whom the world calls philosophers.

Did Jesus speak Greek? An affirmative answer to the question will no doubt challenge traditional presuppositions. The question relates directly to the historical preservation of Jesus's words and theology. Traditionally, the authenticity of Jesus's teaching has been linked to the recovery of the original Aramaic that presumably underlies the Gospels. The Aramaic Hypothesis infers that the Gospels represent theological expansions, religious propaganda, or blatant distortions of Jesus's teachings. Consequently, uncovering the original Aramaic of Jesus's teachings will separate the historical Jesus from the mythical personality. G. Scott Gleaves, in Did Jesus Speak Greek?, contends that the Aramaic Hypothesis is inadequate as an exclusive criterion of historical Jesus studies and does not aptly take into consideration the multilingual culture of first-century Palestine. Evidence from archaeological, literary, and biblical data demonstrates Greek linguistic dominance in Roman Palestine during the first century CE. Such preponderance of evidence leads not only to the conclusion that Jesus and his disciples spoke Greek but also to the recognition that the Greek New Testament generally and the Gospel of Matthew in particular were original compositions and not translations of underlying Aramaic sources.

Did Jesus Speak Greek?: The Emerging Evidence of Greek Dominance in First-Century Palestine, by G. Scott Gleaves

Review 'Scott Gleaves has written a well-reasoned, and quite readable, book on the thorny question of what language Jesus spoke, and in what language the gospels were originally written. Gleaves gives a judicious critique of the Aramaic hypothesis and provides evidence for the alternative view that Greek was the first language for Jesus and his contemporaries. I recommend this book highly.' Paul L. Watson, Professor of Old Testament Studies, Amridge University, Montgomery

About the Author G. Scott Gleaves is the Dean and Associate Professor of New Testament Studies and Christian Ministry of the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies and Kearley Graduate School of Theology at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An impressive alternative to the Aramaic Hypothesis By G.T. Scott Gleaves has set out to shed light on not only the weaknesses in the Aramaic Hypothesis but also a stronger and more demonstrable theory: that the dominant language in Palestine during the time of Jesus was Greek. The importance of such a study should be apparent, yet Gleaves lays out nine reasons why the Aramaic Hypothesis poses more problems than it solves (xxiv). Asserting Greek dominance, Gleaves claims, has the benefit of alleviating these problems. By appealing to various lines of evidence—mainly archaeological and textual—Gleaves aims to demonstrate that the Greek New Testament (GNT) was originally written in the very language spoken by Jesus and his disciples, thus implying that no translation was involved in the transmission process. The first chapter immediately calls into question Fitzmeyer’s three-stage hypothesis, which is based on the inconclusive assumption that Aramaic was the pervasive language of first-century Galilee. A more likely scenario, Gleaves argues, is that these Galileans spoke a style of Greek that was adapted to their Semitic context. A brief overview of extra-biblical Jewish literature (i.e., LXX, Josephus) and Jewish relics (i.e., ostracons, ossuaries) demonstrates the vast extent to which Jews used Greek prior to and during the NT period. The second chapter presents the first major component of Gleaves’ overall argument. Here he paints a picture of ancient Palestine as being highly Hellenistic in nature. He achieves this in two ways. First, Gleaves examines the three primary languages of this time period and provides a substantial sampling of textual examples to show that Greek was the common language of the day. Second, he focuses on the Hellenistic character of first-century Galilean cities.Chapter three focuses on the biblical text and examines the backgrounds of the primary disciples who eventually took Jesus’ teachings to the greater world. This chapter was the most unexpected, but it eventually becomes evident that this line of argumentation is highly relevant. Gleaves dusts off an old question to which he provides a fresh answer. Why did Jesus choose these particular disciples? Gleaves’ answer directly relates to the question of Greek dominance: Jesus chose his disciples because they were born and raised in a hybrid culture which, though thoroughly Jewish, was also thoroughly Hellenistic and bilingual. The fourth and final chapter comprises the third component of Gleaves’ argument. Here, he examines the GNT and scours it for signs of Aramaic influence. The underlying problem of which Gleaves constantly reminds the reader is that there are no extant NT manuscripts or fragments in Aramaic. The question this raises concerns the Semitic quality of the GNT, and Gleaves answers this by calling attention to two facts: (1) the LXX is the primary source of OT quotations in the GNT, which explains its many Hebraisms, and (2) there are Aramaic phrases in the GNT, which raises the question of why only small portions of Jesus’ sayings are given in Aramaic and not the entirety of gospel (specifically Mark’s) discourses. The middle part of this chapter is extremely helpful in its many charts which demonstrate the differences between original Greek compositions and the more wooden “translation Greek.” Finally, Gleaves introduces the evidence from the early church fathers, which largely supports the Aramaic hypothesis. In his conclusion, Gleaves summarizes his views thus: the Aramaic Hypothesis is untenable; the evidence favors Greek dominance; the Semitic character of the NT is the indication not of an Aramaic original, but rather of a unique style of Greek with a Semitic flair. The overall argument Gleaves builds is certainly commendable, not only for its boldness in going against the majority view of Aramaic dominance, but also in its ability to argue a more stable alternative. Even readers who are not completely convinced will still have difficulty avoiding some of the questions he raises. The most important of such questions is that of Greek style in chapter four. Why, if the gospels are translations of Aramaic, does it exhibit so many characteristics of skillful Greek original compositions? The presence of stylistic nuances in compositional Greek, such as the presence of unparalleled Greek words (without an Aramaic equivalent) and idiomatic grammatical constructions (i.e., the genitive absolute), raises important questions that proponents of the Aramaic hypothesis are hard-pressed to answer.A reading of this monograph will raise many interesting questions. While Gleaves certainly answers most of them, a few do go unanswered. At least three major questions are left dangling upon the conclusion. First, assuming for the sake of argument that the GNT is a translation from an Aramaic source, it seems that there could be other explanations for the dominance of the LXX as the dominant OT source. Second, there remains the question of why Mark would include Aramaic words at all. It seems clear that Jesus would have had good reasons to speak in Aramaic in certain contexts, but why did Mark not simply portray all of Jesus’ conversations in Greek? Last, Gleaves does not provide a conclusive response to the problem of the Patristic writers. The testimony of these witnesses seems to be fairly significant, yet Gleaves only touches on their testimony in a brief paragraph. It strikes me that the strongest pieces of evidence for the Aramaic Hypothesis would deserve the strongest rebuttal.Nevertheless, the logical strength of Gleaves’ comprehensive argument is formidable, and the questions addressed above do not detract from this. If Gleaves is correct—and the burden of proof is now on the skeptic—we have nothing short of the actual words of Jesus and his disciples.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the prominence of strong Hellenistic cities like Sepphoris, the backgrounds of the apostles and others ... By Dr. Doug Burleson Did Jesus Speak Greek? The Emerging Evidence of Greek Dominance in First-Century Palestine grew out a dissertation at Amridge University under the direction of Dr. Rodney Cloud. The study by Dr. Scott Gleaves, now serving as Dean and Assoc. Professor of Bible of the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies at Faulkner University, seeks to demonstrate “that within the region of Galilee in Roman Palestine in the first century C. E. Greek became the dominant language spoken among Jews and Gentiles” (xxiv). The assumption among many NT scholars has been that Jesus and those closest to Him spoke Aramaic and thus the Gospel accounts of the NT (originally written in Greek) are translations either from the words that Jesus spoke in Aramaic or less likely actual documents in Aramaic. Through four chapters Gleaves argues that Jesus and His disciples spoke Greek as based on the written evidences of inscriptions, NT writers quoting the Septuagint (the Greek OT), the difficult linguistic milieu of first-century Palestine, the prominence of strong Hellenistic cities like Sepphoris, the backgrounds of the apostles and others who were close to Jesus, comparisons of materials shared by the four accounts, and the extant Greek NT manuscripts. Gleaves provides a good overview of research in this area and affirms that the NT documents were not Greek translations of underlying Aramaic originals. I appreciated the acknowledgement that Jesus and those closest to Him did not necessarily only speak Aramaic. Of course I can still believe that Jesus primarily spoke Aramaic while the NT writings were written in Greek, without having to buy into all of the speculations of German higher criticism. This book shows that one should not assume that if Jesus spoke Aramaic and the NT is written in Greek that the words of Jesus cannot be viewed as authoritative. The authority of the NT writings does not depend on the language Jesus spoke. Gleaves’s work has brought an relevant discussion to light and will be of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about the linguistic settings in which Jesus spoke and the evangelists’ wrote.

Ross There are a number of flaws in this book from a linguistic perspective in Gleaves' usage of terminology like "dialect" and "register." As much as the prevalence of Greek in Palestine during the 1st c. C.E. deserves attention and emphasis, Gleaves draws a patently false conclusion about the "Palestinian Greek dialect." This notion is apparently based on the work of N. Turner, whose view of “Biblical Greek” as a “Jewish-Greek dialect” has been thoroughly disproved for at least fifty years now. The absence of seminal figures like Deismann, Thumb, Moulton, Shipp, and Lee, for example, from this volume is conspicuous at best. It certainly presents major obstacles – to put it mildly – for Gleaves’ conclusion. A brief but firm rebuttal to Gleaves’ whole conclusion on NT Greek can be found, for example, in G. H. R. Horsley’s article in the recent Encyclopedia of Greek Language and Linguistics (Leiden: Brill, 2014): 280-83 and the sources he cites there.

Highly Recommended By Amazon Customer What I like best about this book is that the author makes a few awesome points about the mindset and how it evolved over time in regards to money and the accumulation of wealth. For those of you who love facts and figures, this book is for you.As you progress through the book, the author gives you solid examples of how you make your own fate and shape your destiny. Even though I agree with most of what this book is about, I disagree with SMART goal. I believe in being radical and thinking way outside the box and seeing how you can make things that you don’t know how possible for you.

By Allyn I think this books title was a bit mis-leading, it isn't only about how to make money, online or otherwise, but a very well written exploration of how we think, how the richer class thinks and operates and how our mindset effects our goals. I felt like this was a why we fail 101 class and how not to fail 102 follow up. The author clearly is well researched, the book is expertly written and the information priceless. Well done! I recommend this to anyone who needs a tweak in how to see the way things work, and how to do better for yourself.

Review

"The book’s detailed dissection of the phenomenology of psychosis will be useful to those interested in further refining what we mean when we say a person is ‘psychotic’ and it challenged my understanding of diagnostic constructs. Instead of just describing the psychopathology, the authors explore the cognitive and psychological underpinnings of these psychotic symptoms" - Claire McKenna, ACAMH

"Written by clinicians for clinicians, this title addresses the psychopathology of psychoses. It illuminates the human dimension in the context of clinical application. The authors provide wisdom and methods to enhance the assessment of domains of pathology that will enrich the application of the DSM-5. Discussion of suicide, violence and psychosis proneness bring a clinical and scientific understanding to widely discussed public issues." - William T. Carpenter Jr., MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center

"The authors provide comprehensive in-depth coverage of conceptual formulations, research findings, diagnostic considerations, and clinical assessment procedures concerning psychotic disturbance. This valuable contribution will be appreciated by mental health professionals at all levels of experience." --Irving B. Weiner, PhD, ABPP, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, University of South Florida

"Clinical social workers will treasure this "must have" guide to assessing psychosis. It contains pragmatic, immediately applicable ideas for the busy clinician. Providing unusual clarity and nuance to the complex world of psychosis Dr. Kleiger and Dr. Khadivi hit all the salient points covering clinical formulation, diagnostic concepts, and special populations including chapters on culture, violence, suicide, and children and adolescents. Case vignettes deepen clinical understanding and bring to life the humanity of the patient. As a clinician, supervisor, and faculty member, I cannot think of a more useful guide for the practicing clinician who struggles with the challenges of psychosis." - Gavin W. Behrens, MSW, LCSW-C, Faculty, Washington School of Psychiatry

"The theortical breadth of the authors is impressive... Assessing Psychosis: A Clinician's Guide provides a good summary of psychotic symptoms, and it will be useful to mental health clinicians who are unclear about them... Given its topic... this is probably the best book on the subject I have seen." - Rebecca Coleman Curtis, Adelphi University, W.A. White Institute, PsycCRITIQUES

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent resource for clinicians in any setting By Sean Condon, Ph.D. One would think that—after more than a century of clinical inquiry and research—we would know psychosis when we see it. It turns out that it’s not that simple. Drs. Kleiger and Khadivi take a comprehensive look at this multifaceted clinical challenge, bring together the state of the art in contemporary research and ideas, and demystify psychotic processes and experiences in clear and straightforward language. The book is full of practical guidance, but is not just a handbook: it helps clinicians conceptualize complex psychotic symptoms more clearly and better understand their human impact. While Kleiger and Khadivi cover the DSM 5 diagnostic framework in considerable detail, they also go beyond the technical aspects of diagnosis to explain the evolution of thinking about psychosis within psychiatry at large. In addition, they directly tackle the numerous challenges psychotic symptoms present in actual clinical practice, such as identifying high-risk patients, assessing symptoms in culturally diverse populations, gauging suicide and violence potential, and understanding psychotic presentations in children and adolescents.I rarely see full-blown psychosis in my current practice, but nevertheless found this book to be an invaluable resource. All clinicians are wise to be mindful of the full range of human functioning, and to be cognizant of the subthreshold psychotic symptoms and their correlates that can arise in the personality, substance use, and mood and anxiety disorders we frequently encounter. “Assessing Psychosis” offers long-overdue reassessment of this critical topic, and provides insights that can help any clinician understand his or her own patients with greater clarity and sensitivity.

By Margy Bookman As a Psychiatric APRN, I was delighted to find this outstanding reference and very applicable book on the complex topic of psychosis. It is not a dry textbook type manual, on the contrary, the vignettes presented in the beginning of the book will capture the attention of clinicians that have been perplexed by these patients and responsible to make a clear diagnosis and treatment plan. This has been extremely helpful in my clinical practice that I refer to frequently. The book is very well written and clearly supported by research. I feel fortunate to have discovered this excellent resource.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend it. By Joseph R. Silvio, MD This gem of a book lives up to its self description as "A Clinician's Guide". The authors take the reader through primary definitions, historical concepts, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic assessments of psychosis, including the most recent DSM-5 criteria. For the seasoned clinician, this little book provides a comprehensive update on the current thinking of psychotic illnesses. For the student or early career practitioner, it will serve as an invaluable primer on how to assess and think about psychosis when approaching every patient. I highly recommend it.
