This is the story of perhaps the greatest leadership journey in American history.President Theodore Roosevelt forever transformed America, ushering the country into the arena of world supremacy. His brand of leadership was entirely American: confident, compassionate, energetic, diverse, visionary. But Roosevelt was not a born leader; his ascent to the apex of power was not a foregone conclusion. He made himself a leader of consequence, and it is his epic journey to the White House--a road filled with terrific failures, intimate introspection, and self-made luck--that will inspire readers anew. No author has combined his key biographical milestones--the lessons born from the contradictions of his life--with the surviving stories from those who followed and interacted with him in his various attempts to lead. While a graduate student at Harvard, author Jon Knokey, a Roosevelt historian and business leader, unearthed hundreds of unpublished letters and interview notes from Roosevelt contemporaries. These long-forgotten documents provide a fresh and stunning ringside seat along the twenty-sixth president's journey to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The stories from Harvard chaps, idealistic political reformers from New York, coarse cowboys from the Badlands, and tough-as-rawhide Rough Riders from the nation's interior all combine to illuminate the maturation process of a man learning to lead at every stage of his life. The story of Theodore Roosevelt's life has been told before. The story of his leadership journey has not--until now. Fast-paced and written as a biographical narrative, Theodore Roosevelt and the Making of American Leadership places the reader alongside a young Roosevelt as he shapes events, people, and himself to forever change a country. He created an authentic style of American leadership--a style that has endured for over a century.

Theodore Roosevelt and the Making of American Leadership, by Jon Knokey

Review “Jon Knokey shows how Theodore Roosevelt became an iconic American leader with such insight and color that it makes you feel as is if TR were alive today! Through the words of a remarkable cast of characters whom knew TR intimately, Knokey not only sheds new light on one of the most influential people in American history, but also gives men and women today the opportunity to discover Teddy Roosevelt’s leadership secrets. It’s a vital book for aspiring leaders." —Christopher Ruddy, CEO, Newsmax Media “Jon Knokey’s work is a perfect combination of historical fact and artful interpretation. Meticulously researched using primary sources, the book provides a rare view into Roosevelt’s mind and heart. It traces his development from an impressionable boy observing Abraham Lincoln’s funeral to a decisive president poised to lead the country confidently onto the world stage. This is not just a work of historical significance, it is a beautifully written and insightful glimpse into a complicated and powerful leader.” - Elizabeth Winslow, Professor, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, Organizational Behavior & Leadership??? “Theodore Roosevelt's leadership journey - the story of a sickly boy who wills himself into a life of vigor, purpose, and genuine heroism - is one of the great tales in American history. Here Jon Knokey views that saga through fresh eyes and presents it in a lively, enlightening narrative. Making of American Leadership is filled with fascinating details, wise insights, and life lessons. I love this book!” - John McConnell, Speechwriter President George W. Bush “Theodore Roosevelt packed a full life of experience into the four decades before he became our nation’s youngest president. Jon Knokey’s volume, utilizing previously unpublished accounts by his contemporaries, helps illuminate the contradictions that filled TR’s pre-presidential years and that persisted throughout his life. Few Americans have proven as consequential as Theodore Roosevelt in shaping America’s place in the world and in establishing American leadership. This volume contributes to our understanding of the years that shaped this remarkable leader and president.” - Roger B. Porter, IBM Professor of Business and Government, Master of Dunster House, Harvard University?

By FAR the Best History Book I've Ever Read By Jill Baker I halfway expected this book to be the dry biography sort that are the typical book of anything historical. This couldn't be farther from the truth! Knokey's prose delivered the story of how Teddy Roosevelt went from being an ill child isolated for his own health to leader of the Commander in Chief of the United States. Knokey compiled unpublished papers found in a library at Harvard into a story that made me feel as though someone who knew him personally were telling it next to a campfire. I enjoyed the level of personal anecdotes and tribulations that were intertwined with the events throughout his life. The deeper I got into the book, the more interested I became, and the more 'ah ha' moments I had when the pieces of the puzzle that I knew already suddenly made so much more sense. (For example, I now understand the way he was represented in the movie Night at the Museum.) If you have any interest in US history or that of Theodore Roosevelt, I highly suggest this read. I wish there were a similar book for every influential person in the US!I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

By Colin Dow More so than most authors who have attempted to capture the essence of Theodore Roosevelt, Knokey takes the reader on a journey to discover what made Teddy one of the most iconic presidents in US history. The journey is detailed and thorough in a way that engages the reader from cover to cover. Of particular value to me was the fact that Knokey gave equal attention to the many wonderful qualities of Roosevelt as well as the many imperfections. This sort of authentic depiction not only gives the reader a greater - more relatable - understanding of Theodore, but it also subtly urges one to look internally at the forces and influences in our own lives that have an effect on who we have and will become. More importantly, after reading about Teddy's obstacles, shortcomings,set-backs and conquests, we are encouraged to remember that like Roosevelt, we are the single most influential factor on our own life journey.Kudos to Knokey for bringing history to life in a way that impacts our future!

By Susan Luminoso This book gives the reader an inside look at the rising of one of America's legendary leaders. It reads more like a novel than a historical bibliography. I have truly enjoyed reading it." Making of America" should be read by all politicians and they should take note of what greatness looks like!
