*Now a New York Times Best Seller*

Over the course of two decades, John Hargrove worked with 20 different whales on two continents and at two of SeaWorld's U.S. facilities. For Hargrove, becoming an orca trainer fulfilled a childhood dream. However, as his experience with the whales deepened, Hargrove came to doubt that their needs could ever be met in captivity. When two fellow trainers were killed by orcas in marine parks, Hargrove decided that SeaWorld's wildly popular programs were both detrimental to the whales and ultimately unsafe for trainers.

After leaving SeaWorld, Hargrove became one of the stars of the controversial documentary Blackfish. The outcry over the treatment of SeaWorld's orca has now expanded beyond the outlines sketched by the award-winning documentary, with Hargrove contributing his expertise to an advocacy movement that is convincing both federal and state governments to act.

In Beneath the Surface, Hargrove paints a compelling portrait of these highly intelligent and social creatures, including his favorite whales Takara and her mother Kasatka, two of the most dominant orcas in SeaWorld. And he includes vibrant descriptions of the lives of orcas in the wild, contrasting their freedom in the ocean with their lives in SeaWorld.

Hargrove's journey is one that humanity has just begun to take-toward the realization that the relationship between the human and animal worlds must be radically rethought.

A heart-tugging look at the lives of orca whales in captivity. "People"

I highly recommend "Beneath the Surface" to readers of all ages, including those youngsters about whom Hargrove writes, who want to be just like him when he trained orcas to perform stupid and unnatural tricks. Hargrove is a very courageous man, and his book is open and honest and we should all thank him for taking the time to write it. Marc Bekoff, "The Huffington Post"

A story of both dread and wonderment... books such as this have the ability to shine a light into the inner workings of corporate greed and redirect efforts from selling tickets to preserving, nurturing and enhancing the orcas' lives. "The Huffington Post"

Elaborates on...[Blackfish's] claims but also testifies to the thrill of standing athwart four tons of muscle rushing through the water at 30 miles an hour. And, equally, the nearly mystical experience of bonding with an intelligence eerily similar to our own, yet ultimately unfathomable-and uncontrollable. "Smithsonian Magazine"

As Hargrove's love for and knowledge of [orcas] increased, he gradually concluded that the work he was part of at SeaWorld was harming them... Hargrove covers both the joy of his own experiences with orcas as well as the case for why such interactions in captivity should end. "Scientific American"

How would you cope if you felt that your life work contributed to a cause in which you no longerbelieved?...Blends natural history and corporate indictment into an emotional story about a man changing sides in the argument over human domination of the animal world. "Booklist"

It is with this same unique amalgam of "dread and wonderment" that Hargrove characterizes both his longtime, high-ranking professional relationship with orca whales and his astonishment at how broken the performance animal arena has become--particularly at SeaWorld A shocking, aggressively written marine park expose. "Kirkus Reviews"

"Beneath the Surface" instantly grabs the reader's attention with a vivid description of an aggressive incident between a captive orca and former SeaWorld trainer John Hargrove. Clearly there is still much to reveal about the grim reality behind the 'glamorous' orca show. This firsthand account may be the final push that ends the inhumane practice of keeping the world's largest marine predator and one of the most intelligent and social mammals on the planet in concrete tanks. "Naomi A. Rose, Ph.D., Animal Welfare Institute"

This deeply personal look at the lives of whales in captivity will open your eyes and tug your heart. John Hargrove's work as a senior trainer at SeaWorld made him understand how we need to rethink our relationships with the animal world. "Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs and Einstein: His Life and Universe"

In "Beneath the Surface, " John Hargrove flawlessly unravels the trainer's dilemma of loving an animal with all your heart while working at a place that doesn't. It is as much a razor sharp indictment as it is a story of a broken heart. "Gabriela Cowperthwaite, director, Blackfish"

A deeply honest personal account of a man's awakening from orca trainer to orca advocate as he learned the painful truth about what lies beneath the surface of SeaWorld "Lori Marino, Ph.D., Researcher and Founder, The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy"

The thin veneer of SeaWorld's fantasy that the orca are happy in their tanks is peeled back in this mesmerizing and compelling book about Hargrove's work as a trainer and his journey to become one of the few speaking out against the cruelty being conducted even to this day. "Ingrid N. Visser, researcher and founder of the Orca Research Trust"

Hargrove takes us inside his life as a former SeaWorld devotee, his 14 years as an orca trainer, and especially his deep respect and affection for the orcas he has worked with. Perhaps most interestingly, Hargrove reveals the complex emotional lives of the orcas he came to know, and how they brought out his own feelings toward them. "Howard Garrett, Director, The Orca Network"

Details the disturbing practices SeaWorld has become known for...Hargrove is careful to emphasize that his bond with the captive whales he spent years interacting with was real and powerful, even 'some of the deepest and most magnificent relationships I've had in my life.' "The Dodo"

[Hargrove has] delved deeper into the ethical issues surrounding orca captivity, convincingly making the case that these intelligent, sentient animals can only be free in the wild. "Nature World News"

"""Eye opening... a story of personal discovery, ambition, broken dreams, and hope for a better future for animals that are complex beyond our understanding, YET like humans in many ways" Helen Bailey, A Wild Life"

I demonstrate at the entrance to Seaworld as often as my work schedule will permit, educating visitors and passer-by's alike--I am NOT A PETA MEMBER.For me, it's not about loving animals; but rather about loathing injustice. With that said, John Hargrove did not get an automatic free pass from me with the release of this book. I am too well aware that preaching to the choir has often done more harm than good in this "movement." Not the case with "Beneath The Surface." From beginning to end, This book revealed things to (even) me about whales, and Seaworld, etc. that I was ignorant about. I used to love Seaworld when I was a kid, and, although I have always been uncomfortable with the confinement of animals, I didn't absolutely refuse to go until my parents gave me a "choice." One vivid memory I have while sittting in Shamu Stadium is watching the whales and dolphins wade in their small, concrete enclosures; waiting to be called out to the "bigger pool" to do their tricks. I always thought those smaller pools were merely "holding areas" before/during "show time." Little did I know that THOSE WERE IT! There were no huge swimming areas "behind the scenes" etc. It's hard for me to imagine anyone reading "Beneath The Surface" and still buying tickets. Absolutely mind-blowing. And after reading John talk about the (too well known) aggression in captive whales, I don't wonder why Tilikum kills his trainers, I wonder why he doesn't kill ALL of them. (Except for the fact that he can no longer interact with people...and he doesn't even understand why!)I watched Blackfish a dozen times and cried every single time. I was mesmerized, traumatized, heartbroken, stunned. I learned a world of valuable information about Orcas that I never knew before. Seaworld surely isn't teaching it- and they put the CON in conservation. I think "Beneath The Surface" goes even deeper than Blackfish, because we are reminded about a little boy who's whole dream of life was to understand and work with the whales he loved so much. And how this same boy (at heart) left the animals he loved so much so he could create a platform and speak for them, shedding truth on corporate psychobabble. (Another main thing I got out of the book was that Seaworld cares little more for their trainers than they do the animals that they "employ.")EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THIS PLANET SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO READ THIS BOOK... (including age-appropriate children -- especially -- age-appropriate children.) I still hold resentment to those who misled me when I was a child. Who lied to me? Who taught me that it was ok to kidnap, enslave and even kill whales and dolphins, as long as it makes big corporate bucks? Was it only my parents? My school; IE: fieldtrips? My church? HOW ABOUT TEACHING TRUTH AND COMPASSION NOW...? AND NOT WAIT UNTIL OUR KIDS GROW UP before they learn that this disgraceful treatment of animals is not standard operating procedure. Why wait another day?Every human who has ever used these breathtaking, awesome, highly familial and intelligent creatures to make money should all serve prison terms: confined for 25-40 years in a concrete bathtub.... inside a prison cell. They can get out of it for a half hour 'show' every afternoon walking on their hands in the prison yard- maybe.Bravo, John Hargrove & Palgrave Macmillan. Change is coming. Thank you for opening our eyes and hearts and for giving us the determination to fight even harder---until every tank is empty.

It has been said that any caged dolphin is insane, and having read John Hargrove's deeply personal account, my belief in that fact is only further reinforced. Mr. Hargrove loves killer whales, and spent years relating intimately with them. Only a handful of people in the world can work closely with these massive, powerful, unpredictable, wonderful, intelligent predators. Captive orca are always in a precarious state of health, their dorsal fins are sunburned, chlorinated water damages their eyes, and they chew their concrete enclosures out of boredom and frustration. So SeaWorld has vets on standby, yes, they stand safely behind a wall several feet away and call instructions for trainers like Hargrove to implement. So not only was Hargrove a trainer and handler, but also nursemaid, and for that he received anywhere from twelve to about thirty bucks an hour, and had constant salary battles with management, proving how little they value even the most elite employees, to say nothing of the whales.'Beneath the Surface' has a particular strength, empathy. Even the world's foremost orca researchers have not spent any significant time in the water with these animals, whereas Mr. Hargrove effectively became a member of a pod. He describes whale thinking, an intense social hierarchy, evolution, and sex, all in a well-paced wealth of detail.Hargrove is one of the key interviews for the recent documentary 'Blackfish' which graphically shows some of the abuse trainers have taken. John Hargrove has had something like six major surgeries as a result of injuries sustained while performing intricate tricks. He even consulted a prominent NFL doctor who told him his injuries were similar to a multi-year player- which they are, if you can equate a 300 lb tackle to an 8000 lb orca. That being said, the majority of Hargrove's injuries were accidental and the whale displayed tender concern for him, conveying him poolside on a pectoral, or inundating him with sonar to assess his physical state, as an orca has perceptions beyond those of humans and senses your heartbeat and emotional state.SeaWorld comes off as a vile corporate entity, treating both animals and humans as no more than butts in seats and revenue generators. They routinely use emotional blackmail on their employees, breed whales and sell their offspring down the river, pen large animals in tiny enclosures, and blame both fatalities and accidents on the trainers and not the degrading and inadequate jail facilities that they provide as a sick entertainment.

Turning the Tide By jd103 This very interesting book combines information about SeaWorld's use of captive orcas for profit with the story of a man who achieved his boyhood dream job until physical injuries and emotional and intellectual changes ended that career.I used to be a docent in a zoo and saw many people go through the stages he describes in the book--the initial overwhelming joy of being near and working with the animals, then beginning to recognize problems but thinking they can be fixed, the eventual disillusionment with the organization and questioning the idea of keeping animals captive, and finally the need to leave despite still loving the connection with animals. So I was aware of the general theme and had also seen Blackfish for more about the specific SeaWorld situation. The book added some details about behind the scenes events at the company, and a lot of information about the actual experience of training the orcas. I think what struck me the most was how close to the edge of danger and attack these people apparently were at all times. The phrase "the dark side" is used often (a little too often, I thought) in writing about orcas' sudden behavioral changes, as well as the company's treatment of both trainers and orcas. The chapter on artificial insemination is certainly horrific, especially since this was done strictly to make a profit, not with any goal of saving a species as scientists often do.Changes and improvements have begun to happen--may the tide continue to turn.

The Fat Girls Club, by Lila Johnson

Review "The Fat Girl's Club is an uplifting story about friendship and how important it is to have the support of friends during difficult times. It's a novel about the struggle of personal appearance, relationships, depression, and other serious issues, while never losing its sense of humor. Given the women have real world concerns, their stories are both relatable and believable. All told, the novel delivers a good heartwarming message packaged in an entertaining read." -Self-Publishing Review(selfpublishingreview.com/)

About the Author Lila has enjoyed the ability to travel since the age of twelve. Within the same time frame, she began writing stories that combined her love for the written word and the emotions they evoke from the reader. She sought a freelance writing career for newspapers and magazines that combined her two loves. Her first book, You Need Love Like I Do, was released January, 2013. When asked "Where is home for you?" she answers, "Anywhere the road takes me."

I enjoyed how the characters interacted with each other, and how they bonded over their weight loss journey. This book was entertaining, and the plot was good.....so why only three stars? Well the story ended abruptly and left too many unanswered questions. I was hoping for some type of closure on one of the many issues these ladies were going through. Also, the time line doesnt add up at all, and was bothering/distracting me.They planned to go to London in October (9 month's away). The current date was sometime in spring because in chapter 12, Nikki boss had a catered lunch party on April 10th. So how did Halloween, Christmas, and new years all come to past with out taking the trip. I'm not a mathematician but that doesn't add up. That's not 9 months. That's almost a year and a half.

To see my full review By The Musical Muse "'The Fat Girls Club' by Lila Johnson steps into a hole in the women's lit genre: a realistic tale depicting women committed to long-term weight loss. Women of all ages can relate to the trio of main characters because these ladies live everyday lives, experience everyday emotions, and react in ways that most women can sympathize with." I was a little disconcerted with the abruptness of the ending, especially because it left a lot of stories left untold. I'm hoping this means there's a sequel in the making and not that the author intended to leave us all hanging! In a couple of places, the pacing got a little slow, but overall, this book is a comfortable read.To see my full review, visit OnlineBookClub.org and search TheMusicalMuse.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I'm really disappointed because it's a lot harder to take care of ... By Paulette I just received the books. FYI volume 1 is hardcover and volume 2 is soft cover. The softcover book came with a bent corner already. I'm really disappointed because it's a lot harder to take care of softcover when carrying the book around which I have to. The edges always get bent and the book itself gets into bad condition which is why I specifically looked for the hardcover option. Oh well, this package was cheaper than other options, and I need the book tomorrow so I'll deal with it but just a heads up if anyone else was wondering.

It may seem odd to those of us steeped in a standard cosmological view, but as scientists we should always be ready to engage with alternative hypotheses to what we've come to accept. Whether this one will stand up to the evidence has yet to be seen, but in the meantime it offers an intriguing new perspective.

Baby Ava tells the story of two parents’ struggle to conceive, beginning with Caroline’s life-threatening illness and covering their journey to a surrogacy clinic in India, the birth of their daughter by a surrogate mother, and their subsequent battle with the authorities to get an Irish passport for little Ava. Any couple’s decision to have a baby is a momentous occasion, but for Caroline and Niall O’Flaherty, this decision brought them down a road of emotional and physical stress and heartache. As Caroline was unable to carry a baby to full term, the pair unsuccessfully explored IVF treatment and adoption, before finding a glimmer of hope through Dr Patel’s Infertility Clinic in India. To great celebration, they met the surrogate mother in August 2010 and following a successful embryo transfer, Ava was born in April 2011. However, when their heartache should have turned to joy, they met another battle… On the basis that Ava was a surrogacy baby, the Irish Government refused to issue her a passport or emergency travel documents. The deficit of legislation governing surrogacy in Ireland, combined with the surrogate mother being considered the legal mother, left Caroline and Ava stranded in India in a legal limbo, with terrorism threats ripe in the wake of bin Laden’s death. TV crews from CNN and BBC World in Anand soon dubbed little Ava ‘the baby without a passport’ as Caroline was interviewed by numerous news shows, including a Japanese network. Back in Dublin, Niall and his legal team battled to bring Ava; they were met with numerous legal obstacles and negativity, and were even advised by one official to ‘look into good orphanages in India’. Ava finally received one of the first passports granted to an Irish surrogacy baby and made history by suing the Irish State at just 3 weeks old. The issuing of Ava’s passport ultimately affected the status of surrogacy in Ireland: in February 2012, new guidelines were used by the Department of Justice to assist parents planning to have children via surrogate mothers abroad that allowed for the granting of travel documents. Caroline and Niall’s tale of surrogacy is brave and bittersweet, embracing the richness and diversity of Indian culture and the generosity of its people.

Baby Ava: An Irish Surrogacy Story, by Caroline O'Flaherty, Niall O'Flaherty

About the Author CAROLINE and NIALL O'FLAHERTY met through work in 1995. After dating for only three months they went out for a drive, spotted their ideal house, and spontaneously bought it! So began their lives together. They married in 2002 and dreamed of starting a family. Caroline’s sister-in-law is Indian and she has always had an affinity with that country, feeling drawn to Indian culture. It is somewhat fitting that that is where Baby Ava’s life began and Caroline and Niall plan on taking her back to India when she is older. The O'Flahertys decided to tell their story because it is Ava’s legacy but also as a way of helping other parents who find themselves fighting similar legal battles. Niall is also enrolled in an LLB degree beginning in September. Niall, Caroline and Baby Ava currently live in Dublin.

We English, supposedly cold and unemotional, are helplessly in love with nature. We fell in love two hundred years ago and, since then, have been on a wild roller-coaster ride through escapism, romanticism, art, animal cruelty, conservation, birdwatching, the back-to-nature movement and much more. Today we live with pets, gardening, wildlife documentaries and smartphone apps. The English Love Affair with Nature tells the story of this extraordinarily long, tangled and passionate romance, how we fell in love, and why we are still mad about nature.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A love affair, lovingly told By Miss La In his acknowledgements, Ian Alexander recognizes the contributions of the staff and fellow volunteers at the London Wildlife Trust, for “setting off trains of thought which led in many productive directions,” and indeed, this book, as handsome in form as it is in content, does explore many delightful and unexpected trails. I found myself frequently pleased, surprised, and amazed at the coverage of all things English Natural.Based on the title, you might pick up this book thinking that it would make a nice gift to that aunt of yours who loves her cat and always has a vase of flowers in the house. It’s much more than that. Mr. Alexander can wax poetic when he wants to, and does, but only as if adding condiments to an already gracefully substantial meal. Fully the first half of the book is an intelligent discourse on the beginnings of a sensitivity to the natural world, reaching back to the most obscure nooks in literature, political and social history, and science, all the while weaving the astounding number of hints and clues into strands that make up the fabric of this love affair with Nature. I shudder to think of the amount of material he had to work with, so I all the more admire that he never lost his way.Alexander keeps nicely to his theme of the love affair throughout, starting with the organization of the material. Note that in only four main sections of this 242-page opus, each section lays the lover theme – Smitten, Virgin, In Love, and Taking Stock. You will have to read the book for yourself to see if the name of the final section fits within the theme. As with many human endeavors, the artist often learns far more than his audience ever will, and so it proved for Mr. Alexander, an Englishman. In his preface, he reveals that one of the things he discovered along the way was that “quite a few things about the English suddenly made sense for the first time.” Alexander weaves his delight at his discoveries throughout the work, which brings delight to the reader as well. Naturally, exploring causes of something as nebulous as a people’s supposed love affair with Nature, even when broadly admitted and acknowledged, will be a dodgy thing, subject to one’s own world view as well as skill, inclination, and the influences of friends and colleagues, not to mention one’s purpose and hopes for the work. Thus, in keeping with modern sensibilities, Mr. Alexander is most careful to protect the sensibilities of the atheist, taking pains to not allow the God-centered view of the world found in the medieval world and up through to our own time to deter him or the reader from discovering the true sources of the love affair, which for Mr. Alexander, appear to have nothing to do with a Divine Hand. I suspect that a talented editor would have something to say about the emphasis placed on building the case for an atheistic view in a work on love and the natural world, while undermining the world of faith at the same time, for surely such an editor would want to remind the writer that many of his readers are sure to see the world through their faith, as indeed I do. I confess, it was heavy going from time to time, and the shots fired over the bow sometimes hit squarely. I had to put the book aside several times. However, that’s just me! Aside from this, the book opened my eyes to many things English (or is it British? – the author hints at this distinction, but alas for us Colonists across the pond, does not explain) such as, the many nature writers among the clergy (I bought some of the books he references), the incredible quasi-scientific work done among the nobility (who had time, money, and opportunity on their hands), the amazing (and amazingly ignored) contributions of women, the extreme collections that were diligently built up only to be hopelessly dispursed among the inheritors of the estate, the many artists of sundry media who passionately immersed themselves into the beauty and wonder of the world around them, and the list goes on.Truly, the whole work is itself a testament to one man’s love affair with Nature, for Mr. Alexander, like a stork, brought more and more sticks to the nest, and just when one wonders if it’s going to topple from its own weight, weaves them all together into a most satisfying whole. The language throughout is even and flowing, well tempered, and suitable for an educated mind and an epicurean palette. A smart publisher should pick this up, for it already far exceeds the quality of most of the self-published works I have encountered. I highly recommend this book for anyone closely acquainted in any way with the Natural world and nurtures their own sense of wonder and fascination with Nature, even to the point of love.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Perfect for the amateur naturalist or anyone who likes being outside in the fresh air By Amazon Customer This is a really surprising and quite wonderful book for anyone who is curious about the peculiarly British (Alexander argues specifically English) affinity for our countryside, and for the idea and reality of nature. Despite its self-imposed narrow geographical scope, the book covers a vast range. Despite what might be supposed from its title, the focus isn’t really on romanticism and the sublime, although romanticism is in there. The book is also about hobbies, popular culture and about ideas. In a bravura early section, for example, Alexander shows how, when the church was struggling with upstart enlightenment ideas, its own clergy were amongst the most meticulous observers of nature. Their observations and insights helped create taxonomies of plants and animals, buttressing the ideas that would turn the understanding of nature on its head, shaking the church to its core and (presumably) leading to no small degree of professional and spiritual angst. The book essentially plots the last 250-odd years, developing Alexander’s thesis that our love for nature (or even just fascination with the output of the BBC natural history unit) has developed over a long time, and from a multitude of interlinked scientific, artistic and cultural strands. But it is particularly strong on evoking the late 18th and early 19th centuries; an age when amateurs could still make contributions in a serious way to what would be come recognized as serious science. My favourite parts of the book are the vignettes of Alexander’s own encounters with nature. These are scattered throughout the book and add a light touch that nicely balances Alexander’s carefully constructed arguments and historical plotting (all carefully indexed and with an extensive bibliography). They reminding us what it is to be outside in the woods or on the edges of the Cairngorms (see, they’re not in England) and that we can experience nature with our own senses, just as those enlightenment clergy did.

Does Science Point to God? Is there Scientific Evidence for God? This book is the result of a search by John (an atheist scientist) for ultimate truth. He went through several years of intense questioning of the meaning of life, and of the nature of ultimate reality. Over a period of time he investigated areas such as - Is there evidence for God? - Is there Scientific Evidence for God? - Is it Rational to believe in God? - Is it Reasonable to believe in God? This book briefly discusses some of the scientific and philosophical evidence that he came across during his investigation. In particular, this book discusses (a) the origin of the universe, (b) the fine-tuning of the universe, (c) the origin of first life, and (d) the presence of language and information in DNA, in the context of Scientific Evidence for God. Many years of investigation, and an honest and rational appraisal of the evidence led him to the conclusion that there indeed is scientific (and philosophical) evidence for the existence of God. --- About the Author: John (pen-name) is a research scientist with more than 100 publications in the hard-sciences, more than 10 inventions (with patents in various countries), and numerous scientific and technical awards in the course of his scientific career. He has collaborated with and published hard-science research articles with scientists from many of the top research universities in the world. He has been an invited reviewer of articles for several of the top scientific publications in his field. --- For more information: The description below is from the book “There is a God: How an Atheist Scientist changed his Mind”, by John M. Kinson. This book, “There is a God: How an Atheist Scientist changed his Mind” (TIAG), presents the questions and answers, thoughts and discussions that occurred in the course of an Atheist Scientist moving from an atheistic world-view to belief in God. Many years of investigation, and an honest and rational appraisal of the scientific and philosophical evidence led him to the conclusion that God does exist. In this book (TIAG), he presents a brief history of his journey (intellectually speaking) from Atheism to Theism and ultimately to Christ. The book (TIAG) is not intended to be a rigorous defense of Theism, nor is it intended to be a rigorous defense of Christianity, but rather the path taken intellectually by one Atheist Scientist to a Theistic Worldview, and ultimately to a commitment to Christ.

Here's some insights and exercises for children to get the most out of this collection By Rob Natiuk JACKSON POLLOCK (1912-1956) was an influential American painter with his ABSTRACT IMPRESSIONIST style. Here’s an intriguing question for young and old: What is drip painting? That’s what Pollock used.Children relate to the childhood of famous people, such as these artists. For instance, young Jackson was expelled at age 16 from several high schools. Then at age 18 he and his older brother Charles moved to New York City and studied at the Art Students League. So you see a determined but independent young fellow here. Do young people need to be “rebellious” in order to be artists? There’s a question for your young students to consider.ABSTRACT ART—how can young art students learn to understand it? Let them view each painting until they get some meaning or feeling to express. Take “Autumn Rhythm,” for instance. Are “autumn” and “rhythm” expressed here? How? How do the colors make you feel in “Convergence?” Spend enough time with all 24 paintings in this book and talk about colors, patterns, moods, any discernible subject matter such as in “Blue.” How do the artist’s titles for each painting express the feeling or meaning?Wouldn’t it be quite an experience FOR the youngsters, and even us “teachers,” to try some of this DRIP PAINTING? Quite an exciting on-hands experience to get inside artist Pollock!

I see movement and repetition of pleasing color combinations, but I don’t understand what puts his art in the ‘masterpiece’ category.Of all the paintings I've reviewed thus far, Jackson Pollock’s work is the neediest of some explanation or enlightenment for the reader. Perhaps others understand Pollock’s aims; I’m still clueless after reading some biographical info on the man and his style of creating art (from other sources).

Author delivered the goods as usual, but I simply didn't care for this artist's works By Don Kidwell I was fortunate enough to have received this book for free and would say unless you really enjoy the works of Jackson Pollock I would strongly advise you go on-line first to browse the manner in which he paints prior to purchase. To me it was just 24 pages of random scribbles whereas I personally need more substance to grab me. I'm sure there are others that will like this but I can't honestly say I did. Chalk it up to personal preference with no reflection whatsoever on the author.

Robert Schofield explores the rational elements of British experimental natural philosophy in the 18th century by tracing the influence of two opposing concepts of the nature of matter and its action--mechanism and materialism. Both concepts rested on the Newtonian interpretation of their proponents, although each developed more or less independently. By integrating the developments in all the areas of experimental natural philosophy, describing their connections and the influences of Continental science, natural theology, and to a lesser degree social and institutional changes, the author demonstrates that mechanistic concepts dominated interpretations from about 1687 to 1740, when they were replaced by materialistic concepts. A revival of the mechanistic approach early in the next century made England a fertile field for ideas on the dynamic interaction of forces.

About the Author The author of this book hold two fellowship degrees (FCPS,FFDRCSI) in orthodontics and is presently working as an Assistant professor . To address shortcoming of orthodontic literature on brackets, I started working on orthodontic brackets in the year 2012 by collecting the brackets which were debonded during my clinical practice. This took me through the entire literature on orthodontic brackets as presented in various journals and manufacturer catalogues.
