Psychology is generally considered to be the science of mind, although more properly it is the science of mental states—thoughts, feelings, and acts of volition. It was formerly the custom of writers on the subject of psychology to begin by an attempt to define and describe the nature of mind, before proceeding to a consideration of the subject of the various mental spates and activities. But more recent authorities have rebelled against this demand, and have claimed that it is no more reasonable to hold that psychology should be held to an explanation of the ultimate nature of mind than it is that physical science be held to an explanation of the ultimate nature of matter. The attempt to explain the ultimate nature of either is futile—no actual necessity exists for explanation in either case. Physics may explain the phenomena of matter, and psychology the phenomena of mind, without regard to the ultimate nature of the substance of either.

Your Mind and How to Use It : A Manual of Practical Psychology (Illustrated), by William Walker Atkinson

About the Author William Walker Atkinson (December 5, 1862 – November 22, 1932) was an attorney, merchant, publisher, and author, as well as an occultist and an American pioneer of the New Thought movement. He is also known to have been the author of the pseudonymous works attributed to Theron Q. Dumont and Yogi Ramacharaka. Due in part to Atkinson's intense personal secrecy and extensive use of pseudonyms, he is now largely forgotten, despite having written more than 100 books in the last 30 years of his life. (He obtained mention in past editions of Who's Who in America, Religious Leaders of America, and several similar publications—-but these are mostly subscription based, and reflect more on his desire to be known than his contemporary fame.) His works have remained in print more or less continuously since 1900.

Excellent book by Atkinson, excellent Kindle formatting By Aimee Phillips I agree with the other reviewers that this a is a great book for understanding the mind and learning to improve your concentration, thinking and understanding of things going on around you. Even though it's over 100 years old, the writing is still very accessible and understandable.I also want to comment on the exceptional quality of the formatting. So many public domain books are thrown onto Kindle with little or no cleaning up or formatting. This one is clean, no errors, the chapters are linked and it is excellent. Thanks to the publisher!

"Dear Millie, I am writing you this letter in the hope that life has afforded you the opportunity to grow old enough to read it..." So starts the most extraordinary diary about a seven-year-old girl and her family, violently thrown into the most dreaded abyss when they discover she has cancer in the form of a malignant brain tumour. On the morning of 5th April 2013, Millie wakes up complaining of 'fuzziness' in her eyes. This very quickly turns to loss of vision. Within the next two days Millie will undergo her first eight-hour craniotomy (brain operation) to preserve the little eyesight she has left. Within four days, by now blind, she will be diagnosed with cancer, and within a fortnight she will begin her first cycle of aggressive chemotherapy. Over the course of the six months that follow, Millie will undertake two further brain operations, three additional cycles of chemotherapy and thirty sessions of radiotherapy - 4,000 miles away from home. This diary is her story, the intimate tale of her illness in three parts (Hell, Purgatory and Heaven). It is recounted by her father as his gift to Millie, so that she can read it at an age when she will be old enough to understand the enormity of the immeasurable suffering she had to endure, and the extraordinary courage with which she did it. Dear Millie is not just based on a true story - it is a true story. It is an extraordinary tale of suffering, destruction, resilience and, ultimately, rebirth. In support of Great Ormond Street Hospital, Marco Previero has pledged to donate all royalties to this charity in order to contribute to the ongoing effort to help other children, now and in the future, in fighting this most deadly of afflictions and its devastating consequences.

Dear Millie: Diary of a seven year old with cancer, by Marco Previero

About the Author Marco Previero was born in Montpellier, France, in 1972. He moved to the UK in 1988 to finish his schooling - and stayed. Having long accepted without too much remorse the gentle pleasures of an uneventful and ordinary life, he was woefully unprepared to guide and support his seven-year-old daughter through the vicious agony of cancer treatment when she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in April 2013. He has been trying his best to be a good father ever since.

Previero has an amazing and intelligent way of describing the chaos around him By Kristine Fisher Dear Millie by Marco Previero is a free NetGalley ebook that I began to read in late, late March. Finding the Emperor of All Maladies to be seeped too far in clinical speak, I decided that this book would be much more up my alley, especially with the documentaries and talk radio stories that I've been encountering about alternative treatments.Where the Emperor of All Maladies succeeds and swells in medical terminology, this book outweighs it in all of the insight and gravity that a family of caregivers has to other. Even if Dear Millie is written in a progressingly catastrophic journal format, Previero has an amazing and intelligent way of describing the chaos around him. He also really, really seems to like Whole Foods.

As I read the first few pages, I was struck at how similar my, or any parent's, reaction would be if faced with such an unthinkable medical nightmare as the author.'s My heart went out to this family as I read. Totally mesermized, I could not put this book down and finished it in a day. I thank the author for not only allowing an unknown audience to be a part of such a personal experience, but also for educating us as to the treatment protocols for this disease. I had no idea it was that extensive or dangerous! Thank you for writing this book. Sometimes we need a book like this to remind us how precious life (and our children) is.

By Katarina Ortmann A deeply moving true account from the father's POV about his seven year old daughter being diagnosed with cancer and going through treatment. This book is extremely well-written. The subject is heart-breaking and highly emotional, so it's no surprise that I cried several times while reading this. I applaud Marco for his honest account of his journey through his daughter's cancer. I hope Millie will be healthy enough to read this as an adult. I couldn't even imagine, what they went though, but after reading this I have a tiny idea.thank you for writing this book and sharing your story with the world.

Better Understanding Now of What Men Want By kittyallen155 at gmail com The author of this Kindle book (a man) was very transparent about what men want when they are in a relationship with a woman. Surprisingly, there's very little about sexual things, which I greatly appreciated. There are a lot of really good tips about how men want to be treated in relationships that I am sure will be very helpful. It was refreshing to read a well written Kindle book on this subject, as I desire to be all that I can be when I am in love. This book is well worth the little it costs.

The idea of knowing what men want in relationships with women is brilliant. I've always wanted my partner to me a mind reader and know what I want. With information like this, women can be educated as to some of the things that most men want in relationships, monogamous or not. I found the suggestions in this guide for women to be very well written and accurate. This Kindle book can serve as an excellent guide in helping women really understand what a man wants in a relationship. Think about this...most men don't really open up and share their feelings very well. The author of this book has really revealed many secret things that men desire from women.

Whether you are have been a Christian for 50 years or 5 days this is a book you should definitely read. If you are a veteran "Gospel-sharer" or have never shared your faith, Boccardo does a great job of providing wonderful insight and practical advice from Scripture and his personal experiences in witnessing to equip you to effectively communicate the Gospel and encourage you to get out there and actually do it. The book is very practical and provides the reader with many personal stories from the writer and insight on many of the difficulties you will likely face in your evangelismOne of the best aspects of the book is that he devotes a chapter to clearly and accurately explaining what the Gospel is - something that most other books on evangelism omit or fail to do well. This is hugely important, because, how can a person share the Gospel effectively if he does not understand what it is.Some of my favorite chapters provide great practical insight and teaching. Chapter four is called "The Famous Excuse List." It is a great chapter in which James goes through many of the excuses people commonly use to justify not sharing the Gospel and debunks them. Chapter five is devoted to giving practical advice on how to start conversations with people and some effective questions to ask. Chapter six, entitled "Bumps in the Road," takes a look at nineteen questions and problems people may raise in your evangelism. Also, the book has a great apologetic section to give you answers to many of the most common questions you might face when sharing your faith. An appendix provides the reader with Scripture on many issues and other books related to specific topics to help equip and inform you.The book is well written and very easy to read. Once you start it you won't want to put it down until you're finished. This book is filled with wisdom from years of faithful personal experiences on Boccardo's part in sharing the Gospel and is quite an invaluable asset to the Christian.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. hands-down best motivator for sharing my faith By loochie Despite being a believer for 18 years and even spending most of my adult life devoted to telling others about Christ in public settings, one-on-one initiative evangelism has always been a daunting task for me. Boccardo's book has torn down my wall of fears and excuses and made sharing the gospel a tangible, attainable thing. He uses one simple question to get the ball rolling, and gives step-by-step advice on how to guide people so that they themselves realize they are in desperate need of someone to erase their sin record. I love that.I HIGHLY recommend this book to all Christians. Unsilenced not only reminded me how important it is that we tell others about Jesus (a no-brainer, obviously, but he really puts it in perspective), but it shepherded me on the steps to get there!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Resource By Ben Brooks Boccardo's book is an excellent read. It's less of a book and more of a field guide in how to make the gospel come to life, which I think is a major factor missing in most churches today. The no-nonsense simplified method is one of the most effective ways I can think of to accomplish voicing the gospel in a darkening world. I give it 5 stars not only because it is excellent, but also because nothing published to date is so clear on what the gospel actually is. Thank God for this book and I only pray that it catches on quickly.

While excavating fossils in the tropics of Australia with a celebrity creationist, Will Storr asked himself a simple question. Why don’t facts work? Why, that is, did the obviously intelligent man beside him sincerely believe in Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden and a six-thousand-year-old Earth, in spite of the evidence against them?It was the start of a journey that would lead Storr all over the world—from Texas to Warsaw to the Outer Hebrides—meeting an extraordinary cast of modern heretics whom he tries his best to understand. Storr tours Holocaust sites with famed denier David Irving and a band of neo-Nazis, experiences his own murder during “past life regression” hypnosis, discusses the looming One World Government an iconic climate skeptic, and investigates the tragic life and death of a woman who believed her parents were high priests in a baby-eating cult.Using a unique mix of highly personal memoir, investigative journalism, and the latest research from neuroscience and experimental psychology, Storr reveals how the stories we tell ourselves about the world invisibly shape our beliefs, and how the neurological “hero maker” inside us all can so easily lead to self-deception, toxic partisanship and science denial.

The Unpersuadables: Adventures with the Enemies of Science, by Will Storr

Review "The subtle brilliance of The Unpersuadables is Mr. Storr's style of letting his subjects hang themselves with their own words." —Michael Shermer, The Wall Street Journal"A tour de force . . . A searching, extraordinarily thoughtful exploration of what it means to believe anything . . . There are entire novels that do less than Storr achieves here in a mere 30 pages . . . Running through all these stories is Storr’s growing uncertainty about certainty." —Laura Miller, Salon "Drawing upon his well-documented store of inquisitiveness about superstition, eccentricity, and idiosyncratic beliefs, Storr has delivered an accessible look at the brain’s capacity for adopting unconventional ideas . . . Storr’s distillation of current thinking on the subject is a nice primer for the non-expert reader." —The Daily Beast"Throws new and salutary light on all our conceits and beliefs. Very valuable, and a great read to boot, this is investigative journalism of the highest order." —Independent, Book of the Week "Storr can open chapters like a stage conjurer, and his prose has an easy, laconic style embracing Jon Ronson’s taste for the fabulously weird and Louis Theroux’s ability to put his subjects at ease. He is a funny and companionable guide . . . [who] confounds expectations." —Guardian

It Grew on Me By Book Fanatic This book is subtitled Adventures With the Enemies of Science and so I expected it to be a hard-hitting book debunking the ideas of psuedoescience and the extreme fringe. That is not at all what it turned out to be and at first I felt the author was much too sympathetic with the "unpersuadables". But as I continued reading through the book I found myself appreciating the author's perspective more and more and his approach which refuses to demonize the "enemies of science".This book provides the reader with a view of what the unpersuadables are like that at times is exasperating and at other times is fairly sympathetic. In the end one is left with the conclusion that they are our fellow human beings and are often just as sincere if not more so in their beliefs than the skeptics are.The stories in this book are entertaining and I think they are worth considering. We do not have to demonize one another just because we disagree whether the positions one holds or disputes are mainstream or on the fringes.Recommended.

By Peter Bianco This is a book about unreliable observers written by an unreliable observer. The author states that “most humans, not least myself, are an incoherent mess of madness and sanity.” While the self-acknowledged irrationality of the investigator of irrationality makes for dramatic situations that the author skillfully weaves into his story, it also leads to confusion in the author’s search for truth. Storr openly confesses his strong sympathy for the eccentrics he interviews, and demonstrates a painful (if often entertaining) difficulty in confronting and conclusively reporting the errors in their positions, whether they be from an advocate of creationism or a proponent of the moral innocence of Adolph Hitler. In contrast to his emotional attraction to the irrationalists he interviews, Storr also exhibits an open hostility to debunkers of irrational beliefs. He strangely includes among his subjects one such person, James Randi, and his interview with him is the only antagonistic one in the book. While Storr is often good at identifying irrational bias and its sources, he is not so good at separating the belief from the believer: Randi’s motivations for his investigations may (or may not) be irrational ones, but they do not determine the truth or falsity of his conclusions.A corollary of Storr’s personal attraction to strange believers is his failure (or lack of desire) to grasp the essentials of the scientific method. He frequently ignores large bodies of data and well-confirmed theory that demonstrate the falsity of the positions of his irrational subjects. For example, in his discussion of homeopathy he never cites the basic dose-response phenomenon universally observed in medical science, nor does he even hint at the existence of a massive body of high-quality, strong scientific evidence that ESP phenomena do not exist. He refers to “scientific dogma” as if scientific claims against various irrational beliefs are as dogmatic as the irrational claims themselves; thus all claims, in the author’s emotional view, seem pretty much the same at heart, and Randi is as wacky as is the man who claims that he communicates by mental telepathy with his terrier. But most damaging for his analyses, Mr. Storr shows no appreciation for the cumulative effect of the scientific process, how science works through the accretion of the results of hypothesis testing by scientists who examine each other’s work and either confirm or falsify existing claims, leading to a net result that is independent of individual emotion and bias.On the positive side, Storr’s account of the origin and nature of human irrationality is revealing, clear and convincing. His writing is effective and often highly evocative. And perhaps most usefully, his highly personal and confessedly muddled account of muddled thinkers invites the reader to reflect on the reader's own biases and on the virtues (and difficulty) of achieving modesty and balance in striving after truth.

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Explains a Lot By William Whipple III Why do people not only adopt their own views of how the world works, but hold these views tenaciously – even in the face of evidence to the contrary – and feel compelled to attack the views of others who disagree? Will Storr’s theory, admirably supported by interviews with a series of people with very pronounced and often controversial views, is that human beings need a story that places them in the scheme of things and provides assurance that their lives matter. Thus, to use one of the examples that is given, what happens when a global warming alarmist argues with a global warming skeptic like Lord Christopher Monckton? “It is not a matter of data versus data, it is hero narrative versus hero narrative . . . David versus David . . . a clash of worlds.”When things get teed up this way, it’s easy to be fooled by our own minds – which will look for evidence to support the chosen position, assure us that we’re right, and dismiss intellectual opponents as misguided or worse. So should one conclude there is no such thing as “truth,” as human beings exist in their own versions of reality? Or is there some way to break the power of stories and determine how things really work? The story-breaking method is supposed to be science, which tests theories based on the actual evidence, but it turns out that scientists (such as investigators who set out to debunk any theories that suggest paranormal capabilities, e.g., foresight or extrasensory perception) can be just as fallible and dishonest as the rest of us.While I’m not about to believe that Hitler knew nothing about the Holocaust or the creation story in the Bible is literally true, the other controversies that are explored seem less susceptible to black and white answers. Maybe brain waves do emanate beyond the physical boundaries of our skulls (some recent research suggests that “mind reading” may be possible after all), homeopathic remedies work in some cases (if only due to the placebo effect), and the global warming debate is about politics rather than science. If there is hope, Storr seems to be saying, it lies in humility. We may or may not change our minds about things, but we should try to understand why other people hold different views and consider whether they might actually have a point. Amen!

This pedagogical picture book is a powerful tool in a small package. The authors of The Power of Questioning invite you to nurture the potential for learning that grows out of children s irrepressible urges to ask questions. The book s foundation is a three-part instructional model, Powerful Practices, grounded in questioning, investigation, and assessment. To bring the model to life, the authors provide vivid pictures as well as links to special videos and audio recordings. You can actually hear teachers and students engage in questioning and watch two easy-to-adapt examples (involving plants and life cycles) of the model in action. Then, you can implement new strategies right away in your own classroom, regardless of grade or topic. Both you and your students will learn how to question effectively, making investigations more engaging. The book also illustrates how to integrate state standards, including the Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core State Standards, and STEM education practices. The Power of Questioning is a fresh, lively source of strategies both you and your students will enjoy. As the authors both veteran educators point out, the elementary science classroom is the perfect place to take advantage of natural curiosity as part of the learning process.

This true story of a courageous family that goes to amazing lengths to find cutting edge medical answers is a page-turner. You will find yourself laughing out loud and weeping silently as the Jensen family searches desperately to find answers to help their son, Jesse. Jesse is a lively, loving little five-year-old boy when the Jensens, his “forever family,” adopt him. Abandoned and frightened, he settles into his new home and begins to blossom. His older brother and sister adore him as do friends at church and in the neighborhood. The first few years with Jesse overflow with love and laughter as he melds into their family seamlessly. The whole family bonds over Flaming Hot Cheetos and generous helpings of hot sauce, celebrating life with their trademark Jensen quirky sense of humor and deep faith. But, three years later he is tragically diagnosed with a heart breaking condition. Share in this roller coaster ride as you experience their frustration, as school and neighborhood gatherings with Jesse, are no longer an option; their helplessness, as one determined doctor after another struggles unsuccessfully to find an answer to keep Jesse's body from excruciating pain; and their despair as numerous medications cause only horrible side effects. To reduce stress, the Jensen’s move to Missoula, Montana when Jesse is 13 and within a few months, Jesse’s angry outburst due to a severe medication reaction while in a doctor’s office, leads to a call to local police. Nancy’s life-long aversion to parades comes to fruition, as they drive to the hospital in a slow procession, tucked in between two police car escorts with sirens and lights blazing. “We’re a parade. I’m in a parade. We’re the main attraction and everyone is staring at us. My worst nightmare has come true. We are the only float in today’s parade and I don’t have any candy to throw.” Resurrected Mind is sure to inspire you, causing you to laugh and cry while you share in this modern day miracle that unfolds at the world renown Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Amazingly fast paced and unimaginable perseverance By julie landi "Jaw- dropping suspense, amazement and inspiration…..truly shock and awe…speechless is how we felt reading "Resurrected Mind”. Be prepared, this is not some nice little warm and fuzzy inspirational book with a happy ending but on the level of “UnBroken”. A test of courage, perseverance and unbelievable adversity to overcome. So riveting, we read it aloud late into the night, the way we used to gather for radio programs. A must read for anyone battling to overcome their own “Mt Everest”. We are forever changed by our knowledge of your journey. Thank you, Jensens."

A Perspecitve Changer By David Yaffa This is a must read for anyone who believes in miracles, loves people, loves God, or just even loves life and it's incredible twists and turns.Nancy and Susan have crafted a page turner here, easy to read, hard to put down, but so deeply engaging as well. As a male I have never cried in public while reading a book. This one caused that emotion on multiple occasions. At a coffee shop I cried tears of sorrow while reading through the trials their family and most significantly their son went to. At my job, at a lumber mill of all places, I cried tears of happiness as glimpses of hope started to shine through.Whether you believe there is a God or not, this book will inspire you It will make you a believer in miracles, in perseverance, and the power of family. For those who have a faith, the power of prayer is evident throughout thematically but not pointedly driven home in a self-help format. This is an awesome way to be inspired to pray from the Jensen and friends experiences with God through prayer.Just scroll up, one click and read, your perspective on life will be changed forever.David Y

In the later stages of gestation, fetal functions undergo increasing change and development, preparing the fetus for the transition to its postnatal environment. Rapid maturation is witnessed in breathing, swallowing, sensory functions, sleep, and many other processes, with corresponding behavioral changes. By 35 to 40 weeks of gestation, fetuses are capable of living ex utero without support, but it is increasingly appreciated that even infants born at between 35 and 36 weeks can suffer long-term consequences. This book, which complements the author’s previous volume on development of normal fetal movements during the first 25 weeks of gestation, discusses in detail the full range of behavioral phenomena observed during the final 15 weeks of gestation, with careful analysis of their mutual relationships. A key feature is the outstanding photographic material, difficult to obtain at this late stage, and the instructive graphs that  are also included. The information provided will alert clinicians to deviations from the norm and to physiologic phenomena that can turn pathologic in infants born prematurely.

Near the top of Mount Everest, on 10 May 1996, eight climbers died. It was the worst tragedy in the mountain's history. Lou Kasischke was there. Now he tells the harrowing story of what went wrong, as it has never been told before - including why the climbers were desperately late and out of time. His personal story, captured in the title AFTER THE WIND, tells about the intense moments near the top. These moments also revealed the love story that saved his life. In the spring of 1996, Lou Kasischke joined renowned climber Rob Hall's Mount Everest expedition. When he said goodbye to his wife, Sandy, he knew he faced major physical and mental challenges against rock, snow, ice, avalanches, and extreme high altitude to climb the highest mountain in the world. What Lou didn't know was that he also stood at the threshold of a living hell. Six weeks later near the top, things went wrong. Lou and his fellow climbers faced a challenge even greater than the mountain - the internal struggle about what to do when you are close but out of time. There were no second chances. Decisions were made. Some lived. Some died. It was the worst tragedy in Mount Everest history. Lou wrote his account of the events 16 years ago in the aftermath of the tragedy, but only now is he ready to let it go. He tells two stories. One is about the historic events. His perspective and analysis about what happened and what went wrong have never been told, and his account differs markedly from what others have written. The truth in the story depends on who is telling it. Lou also tells a very personal story about how he came back home. An inspiring story about where to go for inner strength when facing a tough decision. A story about his wife Sandy's part in his survival. A story about what he heard, after the wind - the voice of the heart. A love story. Review "A vivid, intimate memoir that with great clarity and attention to detail, tells an unforgettable survival story." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"After The Wind is a thoughtful, well written love story of Kasischke's dedication to his wife and anchor Sandy and his passion for climbing." -- BlueInk Reviews (starred review) "A through analysis of the 1996 Everest disaster... and the best preparation for my Everest assent." -- Jean Pavillard, IFMGA Swiss Mountain Guide"Kasischke's account provides an eye-opening look at the perils and extreme conditions on Everest. Evocative illustrations by Jane Cardinal further enhance the text, and includes maps and time lines." -- Publishers Weekly"Kasischke chronicles the events not only to recover some truth from the sensationalism surrounding that fateful day, but also to share a deeply personal story of the enduring power of love. ... Kasischke attributes his survival to the promises he made to 'live a story he can tell,' and 'come back home' .... After The Wind is decidedly genuine in the construction ... and Kasischke presents his story humbly as one man's experience of a horrific day" -- New Orleans Review"This riveting book examines what went wrong before and during the expedition ... including a series of ill-advised decisions just below the summit .... Kasischke also examines what holds true when all else fails, when survival is no longer likely. He offers a fascinatingly personal look at what he believes saved him. Ultimately, this is a survival story about love --of mountaineering, of God, and of the deep and abiding bond between a husband and wife." -- The US Review of Books

By Pete Olson While Lou Kasischke's "After the Wind" clearly acknowledges the tradition of narratives written in the wake of major climbing feats (Maurice Herzog's "Annapurna," David Roberts' "Moments of Doubt," and more recently Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" or Anatoli Boukreev's "The Climb" the latter two both produced within months of the same events described here), Kasischke ultimately transcends the expedition narrative form altogether. Kasischke allowed nearly 18 years to "settle" his thinking about the events on Mount Everest in May of 1996; he applies his considerable skills in both mountaineering and risk assessment to help understand how a series of faulty decisions led to such disastrous consequences even as he leads the reader deeply into his own personal narrative of a gently sophisticated love, not for a mountain or a set of skills, but for his dedicated and understanding, though deeply skeptical, wife. These expedition narratives often employ a subtle passive construction either to emphasize the climbers' frailty in the face of the mountain's power, or to diminish responsibility for decisions with poor outcomes. Kasischke carefully documents the facts that led him to select Rob Hall as his expedition leader; chief among those facts was Hall's apparent ability to make good decisions about route finding, group safety, and weather, even under the pressure of proximity to the summit, clients' expectations, and his own need to build a business of leading paying clients to summit prizes. The only time this familiar passivity emerges in "After the Wind," Kasischke uses it to describe his and others' curious inability to recognize initially the poor decisions leaders were making in continuing up the mountain long after the prescribed turn-around time. In short, Kasischke and several others realized in time that they needed to turn back (just 300 vertical feet from the summit) and they survived; others who decided not to turn back perished. But the wind itself is also an active character here; it is the force that continually buffets the climbers, sucking warmth from them and, with the diminished oxygen of high altitude, addles their thinking. "After" the wind then certainly refers to a time just after Kasischke decided to turn around: the point of relative stillness when he has freed himself from the "storm" of desire and determination pulling him to the summit. But as the epigraph from 1 Kings clearly states, "After the wind, a still small voice," this is the key to Kasischke's transcendance of the expedition narrative form. Other climbers have certainly included moments of mystical thinking in their narratives (Roberts, Messner), but Kasischke presents the "still small voice" that stops him from continuing up the mountain as the voice of his wife, Sandy, reminding him of his promise to "come home." This fact is presented without an ounce of sentimentality, just as the rest of Kasischke's narrative offers clear, precise language introducing climbers and non-climbers alike to the intricacies of a challenge as big as Everest. The inclusion of this "still small voice" gently, simply cuts through the will, desire, and determination of a life lived in pursuit of a dream that vanishes in the clear recognition of a far more important truth: the power of love."After the Wind" then refers not just to the time immediately after Kasischke decided to turn back, the moment of recognition of this greater goal, but also to the time it has taken him to reflect after the storm of controversy surrounding the events of May 1996. Most expedition narratives employ challenges on the mountain as metaphors for challenges in the life of the climber: for Kasischke, the wind is, of course metaphorical, just as in 1 Kings, but the wind is also, crucially, the force that hurls climbers to their deaths; the still small voice is no metaphor either: it was his wife's literal voice inside him urging him to come home. The summit really lies in northern Michigan where Kasischke makes his home.

Interesting perspective on the 1996 expedition, and why things went wrong By pjf Commercial guided expeditions for risky endeavors are more common than ever. So it is interesting and useful to have a rational account presented of the decision making of this survivor, and so far as he can relay it, by Rob Hall, as to why this expedition went so wrong. If you ever join an expedition with similar life threatening risks, it might be useful to you. Some of what might have been motivating Hall is information I had not read before. What motivated the author was love, responsibility, and a desire to return alive and whole to family -- when he could clearly see this expedition was taking the level of risk to an unimaginable level. But why was it raised to that level? I've never understood why Hall continued to guide his group so late, when he knew if they went to summit they were going to run out of oxygen before they returned to the oxygen cache. Apart from the issues of daylight, weather, relative strength, etc, the logistics of oxygen, for those using it, were incompatible with success with that timetable. Hall had to know it, particularly for Hansen - who'd had a problem crashing in the previous year. Hearing Mr. Kasischke relate his problems with his oxygen system, added to complaints from others, made me wonder if that gear was flawed. A bad oxygen system would contribute to the poor decision making.Kasischke relates his own psychology of why he climbs, why he chose the Hall group, his disappointment when Hall made decisions counter to the reasoning he chose him in the first place, and when and why he broke with Hall's leadership when he determined it was fatally flawed. I think all these are useful for anyone who might need to make similar decisions in the future. Even if survival is not part of the end result - we all have to choose who to follow, why, when to follow, and when to leave. In terms of content, this narrative is heavy on philosophy and less heavy on daily details of the expedition, personalities and color. That doesn't mean it isn't there, because it is. But that's only half the tale, the rest is philosophy. And Mr. Kasischke is discreet. Having been rudely surprised himself when Krakauer's ratings of his teammates appeared in an Outside Online web interview - something the members of the team didn't expect to have discussed or reported on -- Kasischke is careful to respect his teammate's privacy. As a reader, I respect that too, but I confess I had less of an immediate feel of the places and people at times, due to that. Still, the last chapter, where he goes into some of what he suspects was Hall's reasoning for the summit attempt was fascinating and something I had never read elsewhere. This book also gave a great sense of the truly frigid experiences of high camp after the summit attempt, how pinned down everyone was by the storm and how difficult survival was even for those who made it back to camp. I can completely understand why, having survived this, the author chose to hang up his crapons after this expedition. I am glad, though, that he didn't hang up his pen, and that we have this account. All in all, if you are interested in Himalaya expeditions, Everest, or just this particular expedition, this is a book that you have to purchase.

Marks I have known the author for about 30 years, and worked very closely with him early in my career. I watched with interest as he immersed himself in all things concerning mountain climbing and other challenging endurance activities. One office joke was “where in the world is Lou climbing mountains this week?” I’ve never seen someone immerse himself so quickly and thoroughly into a discipline as Lou did when it came to conquering the rocky and snowbound heights. In both work and play he was very analytical and methodical in evaluating the pros and cons of important issues, while bringing a very practical viewpoint and a high level of common sense to each endeavor. Since I had already learned a great deal about the 1996 Everest tragedy from several articles, books, documentaries and movies on the topic, I was skeptical about whether there was anything new that Lou could add to understanding the unfortunate chain of events leading up to this historic calamity. However, I could not have been more wrong. In reading Lou’s detailed account (it took me only 3 evenings, as I couldn’t put it down), I saw the same careful analysis and plodding evaluation of relevant factors that he typically brought to bear on the many business deals that we worked on together. His first-hand and candid account of certain decisions made and risks taken by other climbers (including expedition leaders) is startling. He also thoughtfully reevaluates several critical events leading to the tragedy, and introduces some eye-opening considerations and personal viewpoints about its causes and how it might have been avoided. In doing all of this, Lou achieves the same level of sincerity, honesty and “plain speak” that he has always been known to apply to any subject. I was also very moved (I have to admit, to tears) by Lou’s very sincere account of his feelings and affection for his wife, Sandy, and how his devotion to their relationship, and their special and enduring love for each other, led him to make the right decision when a wrong decision would almost certainly have added him to the list of climbers who didn’t return from the mountain. Lou did make the right decision, fortunately --- just a few hundred yards from the summit --- a decision which saved his life and made it possible for him to return to Sandy and tell the compelling and moving story of why he survived and, unfortunately, why others did not.
