Winner, 2015 National Jewish Book Award presented by the Jewish Book CouncilFor much of the twentieth century, the New York Jewish deli was an iconic institution in both Jewish and American life. As a social space it rivaled—and in some ways surpassed—the synagogue as the primary gathering place for the Jewish community. In popular culture it has been the setting for classics like When Harry Met Sally. And today, after a long period languishing in the trenches of the hopelessly old-fashioned, it is experiencing a nostalgic resurgence. Pastrami on Rye is the first full-length history of the New York Jewish deli. The deli, argues Ted Merwin, reached its full flowering not in the immigrant period, as some might assume, but in the interwar era, when the children of Jewish immigrants celebrated the first flush of their success in America by downing sandwiches and cheesecake in theater district delis. But it was the kosher deli that followed Jews as they settled in the outer boroughs of the city, and that became the most tangible symbol of their continuing desire to maintain a connection to their heritage. Ultimately, upwardly mobile American Jews discarded the deli as they transitioned from outsider to insider status in the middle of the century. Now contemporary Jews are returning the deli to cult status as they seek to reclaim their cultural identities.  Richly researched and compellingly told, Pastrami on Rye gives us the surprising story of a quintessential New York institution.

Pastrami on Rye: An Overstuffed History of the Jewish Deli, by Ted Merwin

Review "Merwin has written a spectacularly funny, engaging and sharply analytical book."-Forward"Merwin’s tasty exploration of deli cuisine and culture also tracks larger shifts in the American Jewish experience, particularly in the post-World War II period when delis upstaged shuls as Jewish gathering places."-JTA"[Pastrami on Rye] is an entertaining work of merit, written in a fluent style that recalls Calvin Trillin at his foodie best and Ludwig Bemelmans at his most observant."-Santa Fe New Mexican "In Pastrami on Rye, Ted Merwin gamely sets out to show how American Jews evolved from the clannish immigrants of the late 1800s into well-heeled secularists who atone for their parents' assimilation through (mostly culinary) nostalgia."-The Times Literary Supplement,Samuel Ashworth"[Merwin's] writing is so lively and entertaining readers will forget they're being educated. The work is also an excellent example of a multidisciplinary approach--combining food studies, Judaic studies, history and sociology."-Reporter"Merwin has set out to trace the rise and fall of the delicatessen in American Jewish culture, using this analysis to help us understand the American-immigrant experience.  He has been more than successful.  By meticulous and thorough research, Merwin has shown that in the postwar migration to the suburbs, city neighborhoods fragmented and delis closed."-St. Louis Jewish Light"Merwin’s extraordinarily exhaustive research and his skill in selecting just the right fact, telling detail, quote, and anecdote makes this one of the most enjoyable, enlightening, fluid and fascinating food histories I've ever read. And it is my history, too, being one of those many Jews for whom the delicatessen and love of delicatessen foods is as much a part of my identity as the ethics and humanity my religion has taught me."-Arthur Schwartz, author of Arthur Schwartz's Jewish Home Cooking: Yiddish Recipes Revisited "The fruit of more than ten years of research and writing, Mr. Merwin's account shows that delis have been a rich part of the story of Jewish assimilation in America."-The Economist“Merwin's long awaited history of the deli delivers like the best deli fress: this is a book that nails the mustard-slicked soulful flavor of this cultural gem, with a heft of academic substance that leaves the mind thoroughly satisfied (and the body starved for chopped liver).”-David Sax,author of The Tastemakers: Why We're Crazy for Cupcakes but Fed Up with Fondue"Combining a flair for anecdote with exhaustive research, Merwin has produced an exuberantly readable history of delis, and he reveals how their prepared foods helped free early twentieth-century women from daily kitchen drudgery. The very success of ethnic Jewish delicatessens led inevitably to cultural assimilation for Jews and to appreciative acceptance by Gentiles, and the delicatessen became indisputably an American institution."-Booklist"Ted Merwin... delivers a scholarly paean--like an ample but lean corned beef sandwich--to a vanishing New York ethnic icon."-New York Times "Metropolitan""Pastrami on Rye proves entertaining, provocative, and--appropriately--food for thought."-JewishBookCouncil.org“A comprehensive history of the New York deli from its European antecedent beginnings to what Ted Merwin calls the 'postgastronomic' deli we have today. After doing exhaustive research into the subject, Dr. Merwin has put his scholarly pen and thoughtful gaze to work to create this marvelous book. I got really hungry for pastrami reading this comprehensive story of the American deli. Now that is a sign of a great read.”-Joan Nathan, author of Quiches, Kugels and Couscous: My Search for Jewish Cooking in France"In Pastrami on Rye, author Ted Merwin captures the essence of the New York deli experience...Merwin offers a thoughtful, 'overstuffed' look at all aspects of the Jewish deli by examining the role of its food in America through, as he puts it, the 'greasy...gluttonous lens of the pastrami sandwich.' [A] delightful exploration of one of America's favorite culinary institutions."-Chicago Tribune"In Pastrami on Rye, Merwin finally addresses the pressing question overlooked in his first book on New York Jews (In Their Own Image): but where did they eat? This fun and informative examination of the New York Jewish deli is half history and half love story; batampte und geshmacht, with a heaping helping of sakhel—you’ll kvell before you plotz!"-Eric Michael Mazur,co-editor of God in the Details: American Religion in Popular Culture"A pleasing exercise in culinary and cultural history, evoking some favorite New York-centric comfort foods... [Merwin] does a solid job of locating the delicatessen... as a cultural and culinary center of New York Jewish life."-Kirkus Reviews"[V]ery well researched and enjoyable."-JWeekly.com “The writing is so lively and entertaining readers will forget they’re being educated.  The work is also an excellent example of a multidisciplinary approach – combining food studies, Judaic studies, history and sociology.” -Long Island Jewish World "[A] cultural history of American Judaism told through a particularly revealing culinary lens.”-Haaretz"Pastrami on Rye is both a celebration of the deli and an elegy for it. This lively book traces the deli’s evolution from dynamic gathering place to kitschy tourist site, peppered with hefty doses of popular culture. Merwin tells a fascinating story of cultural and culinary assimilation as he explores what it means to be modern and American. This book left me longing for the lost delis of my youth!"-Darra Goldstein,Founding Editor, Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture"Try reading Ted Merwin’s new book, Pastrami on Rye without having your mouth water. Merwin offers plenty of delicious descriptions as he traces how delis rose up first as take-out services for Jewish immigrants, to gathering places for Jewish communities, to symbols of integration — as pastrami piled high became popular nationwide."-New York Post"Brings together a vast range of scholarship and anecdote to produce the first comprehensive history of the Jewish delicatessen. Both culinary and cultural history, this book will be of interest to scholars and common readers alike, the former for its incisive interpretations of modern Jewish foodways and the latter for its ability to recreate a time and place that was 'home' for so many 20th century Jews in America. Its evocation of deli menus alone will get your mouth watering."-David Kraemer, author of Jewish Eating and Jewish Identity Through the Ages"[An] affable dive into the culture and history of the Jewish deli."-New York Times Book Review

Great sandwiches and pastries. My most indelible deli memory, though, is of breakfast at Lenny's in Clearwater, FL, and the bowl of mini pastries that magically arrives at your table.Mr. Merwin writes about deli with love and good appetite but his daughter prefers Indian and Chinese. Deli isn't modern and it isn't fashionable, despite the recent spate of books and the excellent 2014 film "Deli Man." But the thing is, good deli food is delicious and the complex question to Mr. Merwin becomes: What are the relationships between the food, history, religion, and the deli experience and how can the deli be reintegrated into modern food, and perhaps religious, culture?Deli hasn't always meant the same thing and the book follows delicatessens from neighborhood purveyors of Eastern European kosher food to poor immigrants that became neighborhood meeting places that evolved into non-Kosher celebrity hangouts before dying off. Mr. Merwin's well-footnoted history book ends with the deli's decline into today's kitschy tourist destination. As an afterthought he then takes a very quick look at restaurants and food shops across the country that are trying to walk back toward an authentic deli experience tuned to the 21st century. (Hence "Deli Man.")The book is informative and enjoyable. It focuses on US deli shops, and not so much on the food itself or the nuances of Jewish food law. For that you want a companion cookbook and a dictionary."Pastrami on Rye" has been edited down to only 256 pages. I would like to see the 2-3 other chapters that have been sliced out.I received a review copy of "Pastrami on Rye: An Overstuffed History of the Jewish Deli" by Ted Merwin (NYU Press) through NetGalley.com.

In addition to its mouth-watering, cholesterol laden food, delis were a place to meet your friends, business associates and make a Jewish connection. The New York delis, like Katz's in Manhattan - think of the movie "When Harry Met Sally." and the fake orgasm scene, represent the best of the old time delis and the sense of belonging to a group. Forget the synagogue, the deli surpassed it as meeting place. The author contends that delis flourished in the interwar era, when successful Jews found a place to reunite with their heritage. Ted Merwin believes that the deli is experiencing a resurgence and developing a cult status. That may be true, but it's hard to find a good deli in most American cities and never, ever in small, rural towns! This book is about New York and is well researched.

It reads more like a dissertation than an appropriately colorful examination of the Jewish deli. The author says he spoke with dozens of deli owners and others in the business, yet the book utterly fails to capture the magic of eating - or even working - in a typical Jewish deli during the businesses' heydays of the 1950s and 1960s. Too much time is spent on the history - but not the operation - of touristy places in New York's theater district, but there's precious little about the neighborhood delis. Not one single anecdote or memory touches on that. What was it like to peruse some of those enormous menus, even in the neighborhood places, and be served at the deli counter or at a table? What was it like to work as a counterman or a cook or a server at these places? How did they train? What were their lives like? How did they get the mustard into those little paper cones? What was it like to struggle to keep these businesses alive amid sweeping demographic and economic change? Nothing. (And, if you're going to mention a neighborhood deli, even in passing, please tell us precisely where it was - so we might be able to match it to our recollections.) Instead, we get many redundant (and sometimes inaccurate) cultural generalities and lengthy diversions into music and movie scenes and who knows what all. This was a major lost opportunity. In terms of the Jewish deli, it should have gone easier on the scholarship and history, and heavier on the soul and experience.

The alligator gar belongs to a family of fish that has remained fundamentally unchanged since the Cretaceous, over 100 million years ago. Its intimidating size and plethora of teeth have made it demonized throughout its range in North America, resulting in needless killing. Massive oil spills in its breeding range have not helped its population either. Interspersing science, folklore, history, and action-packed fishing narratives, Spitzer's empathy for and fascination with this air-breathing, armored fish provides for an entertaining odyssey that examines management efforts to preserve and propagate the alligator gar in the United States. Spitzer also travels to Central America, Thailand, and Mexico to assess the global gar situation. He reflects on what is and isn't working in compromised environments, then makes a case for conservation based on personal experience and a love for wildness for its own sake. This colorful portrait of the alligator gar can serve as a metaphor and measurement for the future of our biodiversity during a time of planetary crisis.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. clean, clear prose spawned from muddy fishing holes! By theexceptionalist I read "Return of the Gar" voraciously on my flight home from AWP and finished it the same week. Abashedly I have to confess I have yet to read Spitzer’s first gar book, but "Return" gave me the impression I read the right one (for me) first bc the first seemed to deal more with facts of the fish which is uber-interesting, while “Return” was more about Spitzer's meditations on sustainability and contemporary strides at preservation. I enjoyed reading about his international travels to aquatic gar-dens (enjoy the puns and sci-fi allusions as well!). I found myself admiring Spitzer’s approach to this book and his relationship to this fish family, and the truth that by all means you can become an expert and make a difference at anything you care about so passionately. That's a profound point to this millennial pre-apocalyptic acceptance or indifference, especially in terms of natural resources, that I observe and admittedly feel, but the point is tracking progress, and hell even just the awareness and experience Spitzer conveys makes me want to get more involved with the portions of this planet I hold so dear...to reconsider writing as a powerful tool, and they don't have to be mutually exclusive. Spitzer is a realistic environmentalist and I concur with his statement that "These days, it's not natural to stay in one place" and that "Our nature is to go where petroleum takes us. And as we continue to evolve...we''ll become even more multi-abodal, humans and creatures and plant like alike." Many Americans are fortunate enough to have means to be nomadic, traversing of our globe, but I realize the hugeness of what Spitzer is saying here and in the other meditations he presents in clean, clear prose spawned from muddy fishing holes!

Spitzer is a liberal professional academic teaching writing at a university in conservative Arkansas, but has expertise in gar studies, for lack of a better title, and has also managed to be able to be something of a good ole boy fisherman. The book is about equal parts the story of the gar (several species), stories about gar people (that is, people liking the fish, not about weregars, which come to think of it might be fun to read), stories of activism in sake of the fish, and a good example of what Spitzer set out to do, literary journalism. The book is generally absorbing, sometimes funny and sometimes a little sad. Here's Spitzer describing his writing: "Because that's who I am. I'm an assister, whose assistance comes in many forms, the most important form being typing these words, right here, right now, to entertain and to educate for the purpose of propagating gator gar. And it works. My research got noticed by Animal Planet, NatGeo followed, the book came out and word got out that gar don't main and kill, that they're vital to ecosystem stability, and the big ones need out help."You'll find out a lot about gars. They are North America's second largest fish, some over 300 pounds, endangered in some areas, seemingly plentiful in others. They were for many many years seen as destructive, and killed out of malice as much as fishing. Species vary and their range varies, some of the range being due to fish fanciers releasing gar who got to be too big or too much trouble to keep in aquariums at home--that seems to be how the Florida gar got to have a breeding population in Canada. Among other things there is a tropical gar not particularly well know; there's an apparently prospering gar aquaculture in Tabasco, that might serve as a model for getting a community involved in keeping a species safe (although fished for and eater). The chapters can be read as a series of linked essays, and the order isn't particularly important. I found several chapters to be more interesting than others. Chapter 2 describes Spitzer being an advocate for gars, opposed to a development of infrastructure the local power base wanted. Chapter 9 is on a fishing park in Thailand, stocked with giant fish from around the world, but unlike game parks where trophy hunters kill the animals, the fishing park is catch and release. And Chapter 11 is a sort of conclusion, linking a ruptured marriage with a distended ecology but somehow still hopeful.

A refreshingly easy to understand read By zlatts As a 3+ decade migraineur, I'm constantly on the prowl for quality information pertaining to my malady. Lawrence Robbins has the gift of explaining a very complex and difficult to understand medical condition in terms that even I can understand. The most "experienced" migraineur should find this book a valuable addition to their arsenal of migraine knowledge which can help in the never-ending quest for pain relief. While many books on migraine headache can be extremely dry and dusty, Advanced Headache Therapy is a refreshingly easy to understand read.

I would say to anybody out there who suffers from any type of severe headache you should buy this book. It is the bible for the headache sufferer. Many physicians do not understand this illness and,as many of you know, you must advocate for yourselves. If your doctor doesn't know about a particular headache treatment, show him/her this book! He/she should be happy to learn new techniques to lessen your pain. Best of luck!

By Michael Kelstrom Outstanding, Comprehensive, Very Readable and Superior to Other Publications in the Field -- and Yes, Dr. Robbins is "The Best".First, I agree with the earlier reviewer who stated that Dr. Robbins is the best at what he does. I have had daily migraines for 50 years, the last 30 of which I have been a patient of Dr. Robbins (previously and during saw other elite specialists in the field). Dr. Robbins' personal approach to determining the individual best treatment plan for each patient, which is continually reviewed, along with having empathy for their sufferings, comes across very well in this book. The book demonstrates that there is no miracle cure for migraines, nor is there one universal treatment plan that is best for all migraine patients. Instead, there is a multitude of possibilities, which in some combination may provide the maximum attainable benefits for each individual in managing their severe headaches, and having as high of a quality of life as possible. The book presents a very complicated esoteric subject in a very readable fashion, and will help people with serious headaches better understand their disease and the many other health issues that are related to the pain. Everyone having migraines or chronic severe headaches can benefit from reading this outstanding book.

Brain stimulation technologies are both tools to probe brain function and to provide therapeutic options for patients with neuropsychiatric disease where pharmacological options are not viable. Although the field has been in existence for over seventy years, research interest in brain stimulation has been on the rise particularly in the last two decades.

Brain Stimulation: Methodologies and Interventions is an introduction to the field of brain stimulation technology and its applications. The book explores how brainstimulating technologies work in the context of brain pathways that mediate normal and abnormal brain function. Chapters cover neuroanatomy and activity dependent changes in neuronal function triggered by brain stimulation, as well as applications of brain stimulation technologies themselves, including noninvasive procedures that rely on convulsive or seizure therapeutics, and non-convulsive therapies such as magnetic and electrical brain stimulation.

Authored by an international group of leaders in the field, Brain Stimulation is a valuable resource for both neuroscience researchers and clinicians.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended! By PV There is a dearth of such books that so-well encapsulates the rapidly-growing and exciting field of brain stimulation. Irving Reti’s textbook is a good introduction to the field for any psychiatrist or neurologist, but also serves as an up-to-date and in-depth reference for the specialist. The chapters are written by experts in their respective fields. The gamut of brain stimulation modalities and techniques are explored in detail in this book, supported by relevant reviews of the existing literature. The basic science of each methodology is very well-described and excellently-illustrated. It is an outstanding textbook—I highly recommend it!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An outstanding book By Milena Hruby Smith This is an outstanding book. Clearly and engagingly written, with a comprehensive coverage of a fascinating and vital field. Essential reading for psychiatrists, highly recommended for other physicians, therapists and anyone seeking a comprehensive and thoughtful guide to the practice and science of methods of brain stimulation.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Authoritative and useful overview By Stephan Taylor This is an authoritative, well-written and highly useful summary of this rapidly growing field. Practitioners of ECT and TMS will find it useful as a reference, and researchers will find it useful as a good source of helpful reviews of basic techniques and underlying physiology. Chapters in key areas are authored by the many of the pioneers who have developed these new technologies. Anybody entering the field of brain stimulation should find this volume to be an excellent introduction.

While most introductions to statistical mechanics are either too mathematical or too physical, Colin Thompson's book combines mathematical rigor with familiar physical materials. Following introductory chapters on kinetic theory, thermodynamics, the Gibbs ensembles, and the thermodynamic limit, later chapters discuss the classical theories of phase transitions, the Ising model, algebraic methods and combinatorial methods for solving the two-dimensional model in zero field, and some applications of the Ising model to biology.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Elementary introduction By Dr. Lee D. Carlson This book gives an informal overview of the mathematical formalism of statistical mechanics with mathematical rigour not emphasized. There have been many developments in mathematical statistical mechanics since this book was published, particularly in the area of exactly solved models in statistical mechanics and vertex models. This book could be used as an introduction to these developments, in spite of the fact that the mathematics used in them is not covered in this book. Only very rudimentary mathematical tools are used therein. That is not to say that a beginning student interested in the mathematical aspects of statistical mechanics could not gain anything from the reading of the book. There are some very clear presentations of the following topics: 1. A detailed derivation of the Boltzmann equation. 2. A proof of the Poincare theorem, which states that a finite-energy mechanical system in a finite volume is recurrent. 3. A proof of the Liouville theorem, which gives the incompressibility of the flow of points in phase space. 4. A proof, using the Boltzmann "Stosszahlansatz", that the Kac ring model approaches equilibrium. 5. A proof of the existence of the thermodynamic limit for "van Hove potentials", i.e. those that have a hard core and an attractive tail. 6. The explicit calculation of the partition function for the Tonks and Takahashi gases, the Curie-Weiss model, and the one-dimensional Ising model. 7. The Onsager solution of the two-dimensional Ising model. 8. The combinatorial solution of the two-dimensional Ising model. 9. An Ising model for the DNA molecule.

The author introduces Classical Statistical Mechanics through several historical examples (Boltzmann distribution, Maxwell distribution, etc.) then he gives an axiomatic interpretation of micro-canonical, canonical and grand-canonical distribution. Last chapters are dedicated instead to applications of Statistical Mechanics in Natural Sciences (expecially in Biology). The mathematical skills required to the reader are not high although he's supposed to be quite "independent" to develop all the calculations by his own.

What is mathematics, and why is it such a mystery to so many people? Mathematics is the greatest creation of human intelligence. It affects us all. We depend on it in our daily lives, and yet many of the tools of mathematics, such as geometry, algebra and trigonometry, are descended from ancient or non-Western civilizations.Introducing Mathematics traces the story of mathematics from the ancient world to modern times, describing the great discoveries and providing an accessible introduction to such topics as number-systems, geometry and algebra, the calculus, the theory of the infinite, statistical reasoning and chaos theory. It shows how the history of mathematics has seen progress and paradox go hand in hand - and how this is still happening today.

Ethnomathematica and the universal language of maths as the tool of science By OverTheMoon This book doesn't tutor you in mathematics so if that is what you want then go elsewhere now.If you are looking to learn mathematics without a good cause then I would say that you better have the attention span to learn something absolutely mundane if you don't have a reason for it. A reason to learn mathematics is as vital to grasping mathematics as our brain needing a spinal cord to work. It would be best to begin with a cause to learn it and unfortunately just needing to know it for exams doesn't help matters either. I would suggest therefore that you turn to other books in this series like "Introducing Newton and classical physics" and "Introducing the Universe". "Introducing Quantum Theory" and "Introducing Relativity" are the big two science books that can be understood somewhat rudimentary outside of the developed mathematics to support it. I think trying to understand those topics provides enough motives to complete a full study and application of the language of mathematics. Then this book becomes an engrossing essential.Mathematics is not hard if learned the correct way. Mathematics is easy if you spend the right amount of time (lifetime really but in a truly applied year you will have advanced dramatically) on it and know what to learn and in what order. Buy a calculator. Read and learn the manual. In the manual you will come across terminology that you would like to comprehend. This book lays it all out for you."Introducing Mathematics" explains the historical record for mathematics and its development. By the end of the journey you would have an overview that maps mathematics. Then you should go about learning about each part in other specialized books. The main maths to learn after this one are algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytical mathematics and then the big calculus. Getting to calculus is what it is all about. There are then various laws and rules and applications like statistics after that but the goal here is a slow progressive study of the above maths topics before moving into calculus. This is what it is all about.Core material:History of Mathematics culminating in Ethnomathematics is covered in detailEgyptian, Greek, Chinese, Hebrew, Middle Eastern and European contributions to mathsCountingRepresenting numbers as figuresZeroSpecial and large numbersPowersLogarithms (logs)CalculationEquations (linear, quadratic, cubic and degree equations)AlgebraSimultaneous equationsMeasurements, error bars and fridgesPythagorasZeno's paradoxesGeometryBinomialsPascal's triangle, Jain and Vedic and meru-prastaraTrigonometryIntegersAnalyticsFunctionsCalculusDifferentiationDerivativesIntegrationBerkeleyEulerNon-EuclideanN-Dimension spacesGroups and setsBoolean algebraCantorGodel's theoremTurning machineFractalsChaos theoryTopologyNumber theoryStatisticsP-values and outlinersProbabilityUncertainty principlePolicy numbersOverall this is exactly the kind of book I wanted to read. A starter book that just covers all the stuff you need to learn for calculus. Some of the topics are explained harshly but study them enough and you will come around to appreciating the time spent for just getting the point the book makes. When it clicks the feeling is great. Enjoy mathematics.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Pomobabble and Cartoons By M_A_S This book briefly touches on many areas of maths, some old and some new, often uses the passive voice in regards to historically significant theorems in math without reference to the fuller context or reasons why they were deemed significant or who proved them and how. Being an "introducing" of course the book is limited in its scope and can only scratch the surface for most of its topics, of which it does an Ok job with. But the bigger bone I have to pick is with the cultural studies stuff towards the end. Mathematics IS a cultural activity, and is what it is today, not stricly because of Eurocentric hegemony and cultural domination with value-laden theorems, but because mathematical ideas and approaches to proof are "traded" amongst cultures in a broader and larger Marketplace of Ideas. Some recent books challenging Platonism (Where Mathematics Comes From, The Mathematical Experience) are better constructed with more limited theses.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great little reminder to pique the interest By Ryan B Woodsmall This is a highly readable and nicely-, humorously-illustrated quick intro to maths of all sorts. Moving on from fundamentals, like bases and counting, the reader is provided with a number of jumping off points for further study; it's of course more about breadth than depth in a book like this, but the concepts are so clearly presented you can easily find what you're looking for.The only things I can pick out as lacking are some of the more fundamental portions of the trigonometry section - more meat instead of presenting a glut of formulas would have been helpful - and a near complete avoidance of matrices, though groups and sets are both included. Given the type of person I'd think would be reading a book like this, the lack of matrix theory and linear algebra seems like an oversight considering their modern use in technology.A section on calculus with a clear, real-world example of first and second derivatives and integrals was refreshing though, and brought back memories of math I'd not thought about in years. That's the sign of good presentation by authors who know their subject matter inside and out. I'd recommend it based on the calculus section alone.Overall, I'd say this is worth a read if you're at all interested in the fundamentals of mathematics. It's quick, too, and can be read in a sitting. Be forewarned, though: some subject in here will probably hook you and you'll likely want to read more.

Review

"Patricia DeYoung is the Truth! Her authenticity, wisdom, and clarity speak even more thunderously in this, her second edition of Relational Psychotherapy. Her deep humanity and resounding clinical acumen allow relational theory and therapy to come alive to a degree I don't think has been equaled in any other book on the subject. Brava!" Steven Tuber, PhD, ABPP, is professor of psychology and director of clinical training in the doctoral program in clinical psychology at the City College of New York.

"The temptations of jargon are seductive, and many writers in our field succumb to them in ways that enable them to gloss over sticky points in their thinking. DeYoung commits herself to a much more experience-near and jargon-free approach to describing her work. The result is a refreshing look at what it means to work relationally that I found very helpfully illuminating and clarifying. It was a pleasure to see real people pop off almost every page." Paul L. Wachtel, PhD, is the author of Relational Theory and the Practice of Psychotherapy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very thorough, very accessible, and very courageous book!! Worth a read. By Vanessa This primer is really fantastic, very thorough and very, very accessible. It's written in almost a conversational style so that I felt as if the author was just speaking to me. I am almost finished with my psychoanalytic training in a very relationally-inclined institute in NYC, so this book was mostly a review for me. However, if you don't know anything about psychoanalysis, this is the book to start with. There is no other out there that speaks so clearly. My absolute favorite chapter was Chapter 5, where DeYoung shares a personal struggle in her own analysis. It takes a tremendous courage to be this vulnerable in a book -- and by doing this, she actually demonstrates the vulnerability required of a good therapist rather than just talking about it. Yes, we all have our blind spots and difficulties -- the point isn't to be perfect, but to own our stuff and use it to work through whatever comes up. I want to thank the author for this honesty because it inspired and encouraged me to continue working on my own book as well. This is indeed a wonderful text and I think it can help a great deal of beginning students to understand the process of psychotherapy.

Did you know how common it is how little people know about apple cider vinegar and how beneficial it is to use on a daily basis?

You ask, what is apple cider vinegar?

Is it really beneficial or just all hype?

Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar that's made from apples. While apple cider vinegar is clear, the organic and unpasteurized kind is foggy and slightly congealed. This is because of the large amounts of mother of vinegar in the ACV. Mother of vinegar is actually cellulose, a natural carbohydrate, that's produced by bacteria in the vinegar. It is not harmful when ingested, nor is it a sign of spoilage. It is actually what frequent ACV users look for.

It has been a long time, but my mother used several of the recommended items. The vinegar even smells different from the regular stuff in the grocery store. Recommend this book if anyone is interested in vinegar and its many uses.

I remember when I was just a kid, my family went to the beach one year and my father got a terrible sunburn. He went to the store and got a whole gallon of apple cider vinegar, mixed it in water in the tub, and soaked in it all evening. He smelled terrible, but his sunburned stopped hurting and he was able to enjoy the rest of the vacation. Most recently, my wife has started using it to clean almost everything around the house, including washing our carpets with it using a steam cleaner. The smell isn't the best, but it leaves the carpets very clean and the smell goes away soon. The author has done a great job here of outlining many more uses for apple cider vinegar that I never even knew existed. This is a book that I will keep handy and refer to often! I love using natural products and cures, and this book is a great addition to my library.

The Interwoven Lives of Sigmund, Anna and W. Ernest Freud is a biography of three members of the Freud family in which the central thread is the life and work of W. Ernest Freud, the only Freud grandchild to become a psychoanalyst. He was also the little boy that played ‘fort da’, the game Freud described and interpreted in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920). Unlike many biographies that emphasize the independent or frankly heroic efforts of the subject, this biography demonstrates the interpersonal and historical contexts, which influenced to the life and work of the main subject. It traces the interwoven lives and psychoanalytic contributions of Sigmund Freud, his daughter Anna and his grandson Ernest, from Ernest’s birth in 1914 until his death in 2008. Also interwoven are the friends, family relations and world events that touched their lives. In Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) Sigmund Freud described the game of an eighteen-month-old child, his grandson Ernest, who played with a wooden reel on the end of a string. Throwing the reel into his curtained cot he said ‘fort’ meaning ‘gone’, in German. Pulling the string and bringing the reel back he said ‘da’, meaning ‘there’. Freud saw in this spontaneous and repetitive game, a way for the boy to manage the trauma of abandonment that he experienced each time his mother left the apartment to do her errands. As ill fate would have it, the rest of Ernest’s life is a tragic story of bitter losses and the vicissitudes of a troubled man in a troubled world. But it is also the story of a troubled man who would time and again rally his resources and find the courage to love, to work and to carry on. The story begins at the height of Freud’s career, the beginning of Anna Freud’s psychoanalytic training, the beginning of the First World War and the birth of little Ernest. It takes us through the early deaths of Ernest’s mother and little brother, Ernest’s psychoanalysis conducted by his aunt Anna, the invasion of Austria by the Nazis, Ernest’s emigration to England, and the death of his Grandpa Sigmund. It describes his hardships in wartime England, the Anna Freud-Melanie Klein controversies and the horrors of the holocaust. Following the war it details Ernest’s marriage, psychoanalytic training, his mentorship under his aunt Anna, the establishment of his private practice, the birth of his son, his work with his aunt Anna at the Hampstead Clinic, and the development of his special interests in infant observation and the psychological aspects of neonatal intensive care. This biography was written by a clinician and is expected to be of interest to clinicians and others interested in psychoanalytic history.

By Mark B I am not a clinician, but this book is fascinating for anyone who has an interest in history , biographies, AND you will learn something about psychology. It is a remarkably easy read though it is somewhat long and sometimes repeats information for emphasis. It was a book that I read continuously with only a few pauses.

I basically said: Daniel Benveniste, who is a clinician himself, has written a wonderful book that is a great reading experience for professional and lay person alike. I hightly recommend it.

The Eurasian beaver was near extinction at the start of the twentieth century, hunted across Europe for its fur, meat and castoreum. But now the beaver is on the brink of a comeback, with wild beaver populations, licensed and unlicensed, emerging all over Britain.

As a keystone species, the beaver plays a vital role in the creation of sustainable wetland habitats through its damming activities, providing living opportunities for a broad spectrum of wildlife. Yet as proposals for reintroducing beavers are underway, re-establishing the beaver in Britain is still a controversial issue.

This book presents a case for our future coexistence with beavers by providing factual information on this species that has now passed from national memory, covering the biology, behaviour and ecology of the Eurasian beaver in a British context, from their early history in archaeology and folklore to their contemporary field signs in the wild. This book familiarises readers once again, after almost 400 years of its absence, with the Eurasian beaver, providing essential information on its requirements in our human dominated landscape.

This book is for those with a specific interest in beavers and their reintroduction, and for anyone with a general curiosity in natural history, ecology or animal behaviour. It can be used as a field guide to identify beaver field signs and observe beavers in the wild by wildlife surveyors or general land users, or as an introductory guide for anyone with an interest in beavers and how to recognise them.

The authors have been actively involved in the study of beaver ecology, behaviour and reintroduction for many years. They have a first-hand knowledge of beavers in captivity and in the wild in both Britain and a range of other European countries.

The Eurasian Beaver, by Róisín Campbell-Palmer, Derek Gow, Robert Needham, Simon Jones, Frank Rosell

Review The authors provide an update on their experiences direct from the field, the quarantine area and the veterinary table. This fascinating book promotes a future co-existence with beavers in Britain by providing factual information on their biology, behaviour and the habitats they help to generate. This remarkable, unassuming animal has the capacity to help renaturalise our rivers, re-create areas of wetland, increase biodiversity, provide natural flood defence, protect soils and filter and purify our water. -- Nick Mott Staffordshire Wildlife This admirable little book tells you all you are ever likely to want to know about the beaver. It is illustrated with many photos of the animal and its habitat, with maps showing its distribution and tables of the plants it eats and the signs it leaves. Despite the text being only 44 pages long, the authors cover everything you might want to know about these fascinating rodents. Beavers are being re-introduced to Scotland and Devon but it is very unlikely that they will find their way to Derbyshire. So you will have to travel if you want to see them for yourself. My only encounter with beavers was on holiday in Estonia. Kath and I stopped in Soomaa National Park and wandered about in the forests finding both felled trees and huge beaver lodges. One evening while walking by a stream, we were startled by the amazingly loud 'slap' of a beaver's tail close to us. This loud noise warns the animal's family of danger. It's a remarkable and unmistakeable sound which certainly scared the life out of us! A ripple running down the stream was the closest we came to seeing one. One thing I had never realised was that Beverley in Yorkshire gets its name from the beaver. And another; that beavers don't eat coniferous trees though they sometimes fell them to use as lodge-building material. -- Derbyshire Wildlife Trust Derbyshire Wildlife Trust
