3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Heartfelt and inspiring read By Laura G. Gripping – that is the first word that comes to mind describing in this book. Honestly, that could sum up the entire thing. From the very first page all the way to the end, the entire novel is gripping, intense, and heartbreakingly real. I generally lean toward historical fiction, so this novel was a completely different type for me to delve in to. Originally, I thought to read a bit here and there over several days; however, within just one chapter, that thought went out the window and I just kept on going, unable to put it down and leave Hannah in the middle of her story.Ms. Terry is a writer very gifted with imagery and character emotion. I could clearly see what they saw - and it wasn’t always pretty. I felt what they felt - and it hurt to even know such atrocities are possible in this fallen world. Her writing is just so very real and believable, and it’s almost incomprehensible knowing that circumstances such as these are happening half a world away. The characters took on their own identities quickly and were given a life of their own in a way that only truly exceptional authors can make happen. Hannah’s and Simon’s plights were thorough and well-developed. Supporting characters were created to be just enough and not too much – the enigma that is Moses had me going for awhile, slowly trying to figure him out and tugging my heartstrings with anguish in some areas. I questioned him, his actions and motives, and even had to get up and go find my husband to drag him into a discussion about this character and his path. This is actually the first book I’ve read by Ms. Terry, and I wonder if she’s already told some of Moses’ story. If not, she could easily create another novel focused on him. I plan on getting her other novels now just to find out!Well done, Ms. Terry, on creating such a well-written novel that truly shows the reader the plights of hidden Christians in places that are not nearly as safe as where we personally may live.“She pictured a day — years in thefuture, but coming nonetheless — when God would transformthe very land they stood on. She saw the ground itself purgedand cleansed from all the innocent blood it had soaked up overthe decades. Former guards and former prisoners met together,clasping hands and asking God to heal and forgive their nation.”What a powerful image. I stopped and reread that particular passage several times. It was a poignant culmination of thought from the main character, and by the time I read it, I was feeling everything going on within her heart.

By Julie Torn Asunder is the third book in a series of novels by Alana Terry that can be read in any order, or individually as a stand alone story. Torn Asunder is the first love story of the bunch, though it is not your typical romance novel. True to the style of writing found in the Beloved Daughter and Slave Again, the author draws out deep philosophical and theological questions that leave the reader with food for thought and discussion long after the book has been read.The book follows two North Korean refugees mentioned briefly in Slave Again, Hannah and Simon, who have been trained in the 'Secret Seminary' by an American missionary couple. They are sent back to North Korea to carry out specific missions for the underground church. Their love for each other is overshadowed by a greater passion to bring light into a darkened North Korea. They are separated when they leave the Seminary, and the book chronicles their stories as they wrestle with how to reconcile the feelings they have for each other with their missionary work.Alana Terry has a gift for developing three dimensional characters who struggle with some of the most difficult conflicts of the human spirit and come out on the other side looking much like someone might in real life; there are no simple answers, no decisions that come easily. One of my favorite themes of the book was summed up in the quote, "Never judge someone who fails a test you have yet to pass." Torn Asunder was full of tests of the will, tests of faith, tests of priorities. The way the characters engaged these tests was fascinating and thought provoking. I felt myself drawn into each character, feeling what they felt and understanding why they made the choices they did, even if I would like to think I would have chosen differently.This book had some seriously difficult scenes to digest, as did the previous two in the series, but in a climactic scene toward the end of the book, there seems to be a brilliant hope for North Korea emerging that causes the reader to realize that all of the pain, sacrifice, and suffering is sowing into a greater plan and the harvest will eventually come.I would highly recommend this book, and can honestly say that Alana Terry has become one of my favorite authors.

This book evokes so many emotions that I don't even know where to start. Though it's the sequel to Slave Again, it can be read independently, and to be honest, I think it's even better than the first book (which tends to be rare)!Torn Asunder follows Hannah and Simon, North Korean refugees who have trained as underground missionaries in China and have now returned to North Korea to spread the word of the Gospel. Just as many Christians are persecuted for their faith in real life, Hannah and Simon suffer much abuse, which Ms. Terry does not sugar-coat. I appreciate that she keeps it real and raw, but for some, it may be a trigger and too graphic.The characters in this book are not always as they seem, and it can be hard to understand when some characters are killed out of "compassion." Hannah's pure heart and complete devotion to God are an inspiration, and I am ashamed to admit that I would 99% not survive if I were in her shoes. The love story between Hannah and Simon will leave you teary-eyed and on the edge of your seat, and many of us will wish we had such a connection with another person.I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

After reading this book it brings back such great memories of my time on a stretch of water with my fly rod and taking in the wonder of it all and thinking I am so lucky. Great reading Don.

The book relates a series of stories of compassion, courage and human experience, all seen through the eyes of the psychologist. The stories speak of suffering, the human capacity to endure, and self-transformation for the sake of life, love and survival. Dr. Foster also portrays remarkable relationships between therapist and client. She shows the struggles of the psychotherapist as she endeavors to help each individual's personal growth, setting aside her own challenges for the sake of others. I found myself fully emerged in each story. The characters are vivid and full of life. I have a greater admiration for mental health professionals as a result of reading this book. Thank you, Dr. Foster, for a wonderful read.

The insights, observations and emotional experiences of a Psychotherapist By Oscar Blanco My impressions of Psychotherapy had always been shaped by some of the movies I have watched over the years. I imagined that going to a therapist was a lot like Tony Soprano's visits to his psychiatrist, although there are many variations of therapy, which I learned when reading Kathryn Foster's book. In her book "Sessions: Memoirs of a Psychotherapist", I had come to discover that getting psychological help can be a lot like talking to a friend – a friend specially trained to help you through the tough times. When you may engage in certain actions without knowing why, and those actions can make you feel bad. That alone might be enough to lead you toward therapy. In therapy, you can then start to disentangle all of the factors that may be affecting what you do to help you understand why you may be feeling bad about some of your actions and why you may not feel bad about other actions when perhaps you should.While I have always know that therapists are specially trained to deal with a broad range of issues on an academic level and are paid professionals, I’ve come to discover that most become therapists because they genuinely have a need to help people. So even though you know that you are talking with someone who gets paid to help you, I take comfort in knowing that most therapist really want to help you feel better. What I found so uniquely different and highly interesting in her book is the personal issues that the Psychotherapist must deal with when treating their patients. I would venture to say that most mental health professionals agree that the profession is inherently hazardous. It takes superhuman strength for most people just to listen to a neighbor moan about his lousy marriage for 15 minutes. Psychologists, of course, enter the profession by choice. Based on the insights that was offered in her book, I look forward to reading Kathryn’s other published work.

An elegant style mixed with suspense By Robyn Conley Kathyrn Foster's gift of layering both imagery and emotion amidst her prose invites us into a world seldom witnessed: the delicate hard work of a psychotherapist, balancing technical savvy with genuine care and guidance. Foster is a master of detail, without losing the reader in boggy description. Her authentic characters remind us of real people we've met--and the suspenseful undercurrent with Michael keeps us turning pages with fervor.

I love it! almost everyone has apple cider in the kitchen. how easy is this?? the most amazing part of it is losing weight gradually! nothing drastic, just slow and consistent. Exactly what I want! Having it before meals, preventing the fats in the food I am just about to eat, from being absorbed by my body? Heck! I can do that!

About the Author Richard M. Langworth began his Churchill work in 1968 when he organized the Churchill Study Unit and its journal, FINEST HOUR. It later became the International Churchill Society and finally the Churchill Centre, devoted to all aspects of Churchill’s life. Mr. Langworth served as its president (1996-2000) and editor of FINEST HOUR (1982-2014). In 2014 he was appointed senior fellow for Hillsdale College’s Churchill Project. In 1998, Richard Langworth was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty The Queen “for services to Anglo- American understanding and the memory of Sir Winston Churchill.” Langworth published the first American edition of Churchill’s "India," is the author of "A Connoisseur’s Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill," and editor of "Churchill by Himself," "The Definitive Wit of Winston Churchill," "The Patriot’s Churchill," "All Will Be Well: Good Advice from Winston Churchill" and "Churchill in His Own Words" His next book is "Winston Churchill, Urban Myths and Reality." By jack mens What were Winston Churchill's statements and vision before World War II and not in hindsight after the war ?That is the premise of this book. Is there enough support here that Churchill predicted ahead of time that a new worldwar could happen if the policies of the Chamberlain government and her Allies were not altered ?And could it have been prevented by a new Triple Entente ?Revisionists have always tried to discredit the warnings, statements and pre-war actions of Churchill. It is my opnionthat this small book does a very convincing job in showing that Churchill was right on the large issues. And when he wasquiet on Abyssinia or poorly informed about the will of the Austrian people, it made very little difference.Richard Langworth makes a strong case through facts and references from the pre-war years and not through hindsight,that Churchill predicted the threat from Hitler and Nazi-Germany.His warnings about the failings of the policies of the governments of England and France all came true.The British government was not the only one that completely underestimated the directions that Hitler was taking his country.For instance in Holland, country of my birth,their Prime Minister, mr.Colijn (1933-1939) in a radio broadcast in 1936 tothe Dutch people stated :" The threatening world storm will pass the Netherlands by, the government will take care of that.The Dutch people can sleep peacefully. " It haunted him for the rest of his life. Colijn spend all the war yearsin a German prison camp.But when Hitler could be heard on the Dutch radio, people like my grandfather reacted very differently. He predicted that allthis would end very badly.One more important point I like to make.If Winston Churchill had been even more critical, more aggressive to government and colleagues in Parliament he probably would have alienated himself much more then was good for the country.Would Chamberlain still have brought him back in the government in 1939 ?And would King George VI have enough confidence in Churchill to offer him the Premiership in May '40 ?England could easily have ended up with a Lord Halifax type Prime Minister.Indeed a scary thought !I know this is hindsight, but without Churchill's great statemanship and diplomacy this could easily have happened.The author tells us correctly tells us that a new Tri-Entente, with the support of Poland and Czechoslovakiacould have stopped Munich and all that came after that. Hitler's reign could have ended right then,but Churchill did not know that at the time.This book is not only a must read for Churchillians, but also should be available via the Internet, in bookstoresand in school libraries.

By Don Graeter This is a badly needed and superbly executed look at the major events leading up to WWII in Europe from the perspective of Winston Churchill and his dealings with the other leaders of the British government during the period--Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin. Anyone who is at all interested in this pivotal period of history will enjoy this work and find it both highly informative and a quick, clear, concise and easy read.Readers can always count on Richard Langworth for both accuracy and fairness when reading anything he publishes on the topic of Churchill and his times. Langworth always gets his facts right and is fair in his assessments of not only Churchill but also his political opponents of this era--Baldwin and Chamberlain. When Churchill was right, when he was mistaken and when we simply can't be sure Langworth can be counted on to point it out. We can also count on him to avoid both factual errors and the omission of material information regarding his subject matter--an essential but, sadly, increasingly rare attribute in today's writing about Churchill.Churchill had a career of incredible length (60+ years) in multiple pursuits (literary, military and political) and in which he dealt with complex and momentous world affairs as a senior government minister in both World Wars. As a result of the volume and complexity of the public affairs with which Churchill dealt, his life is one in which it is easy for an author to honestly overlook important details or to manipulate the facts to paint a misrepresentative portrait.This book is a superb approach to dealing with the complexity of certain issues in Churchill's life. The author selects an important issue (Could World War II have been avoided had Churchill's advice during the "Appeasement Era" been followed?) and examines in depth the diplomatic events of the era along with what Churchill had to say about them at the time and later. By focusing solely on this narrow, but important and complex issue Langworth is able to first ferret out all of the relevant facts. He is then well positioned to reach his conclusions regarding the book's central question. The complexity of the topic demands this much detail in weighing the issue thoroughly, but devoting the requisite 100 pages is beyond the space available in other works covering Churchill and this period of history.Hopefully, Richard Langworth will continue with the application of this approach to other complex, important and frequently misunderstood (or intentionally misrepresented) episodes in Churchill's long life. It is badly needed!An example of what I reference above is that of Churchill's comments about Hitler during the 1930's. Here one finds not only Churchill's specific comments (all of them, including all of the relevant portions) in speeches, interviews, magazine articles and books, but also pertinent aspects of the political situation which Churchill faced at the time of publication. For example, he was urged to "tone it down" by the Foreign Office before one publication. Langworth gives us not only that fact but also the portions Churchill felt compelled to remove from the final version.As other reviewers have pointed out, Langworth differentiates between what Churchill said at the time and what he said later with the benefit of hindsight. Most importantly, he does so with an even handed analysis. As icing on the cake, we are treated to all this in a work of only 98 pages, making it a quick as well as informative read.More of these, please!

By Manfred Weidhorn This book is an excellent survey of the key “what if” junctures where history could have taken a different turn. What I like about it especially is that Langworth conscientiously steers away from any definitive pronouncements about one zig or zag making all the difference. Time and again he rightly stresses our ignorance of what would have followed from one alternative action and our foolish assumption that other things would have remained equal. Hr bring out the pity of things—i.e., that Hitler was ready to retreat from the Rhineland at the first sign of resistance; that the performance of the Wehrmacht in the Anschluss was out of a Viennese operetta, a fact that should have weighed heavily in Allied councils but seems to have been the equivalent of a military secret; that a possible coup against Hitler was preempted by an innocent Chamberlain. The main inference from this analysis, as in those of the Civil War and WWI, etc. is that all leaders operate within a narrow horizon and, just like the rest of us, are steeped in ignorance. “Forgive them, for they know not what they do”: I’m not sure of the forgiveness part (ISIS? Hitler?Stalin? Pol Pot? No thanks, Jesus!) but the second part of the sentence is the single most profound statement about the human race. Again, it was very helpful to have the highlights strung together by themselves, without the distraction of other issues.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK TO HELP CHILDREN APPRECIATE ART By Rob Natiuk This is a painter most appealing to children because of her subject matter – emphasis on the life between mothers and children. She has been classed among the impressionists but her style is very accessible to us because it is also realistic.For instance, “The Boating Party” captures a mother in a boat being oared by the father. The mother holds her baby. The colors and details are subdued. I suggest letting children look at this painting quietly for a minute or two, and then give their impressions.A number of the selected paintings are of women, some beautiful, some ordinary, in everyday settings. For these I’d let children gaze on a painting and then give their impressions – remember, these are “impressionistic” paintings. Then, after they respond to separate works, have them react to all of them as one. Then they could do the same with the paintings of children – at the beach, girl with a straw hat, little girl with her nanny, girl with pink sash, breakfast in bed, “Sara holding a cat.”The best learning experience would be for the children “to be the painter, Mary Cassatt” and draw, water color or paint in her style for a bit. Encourage them to get their “impressions” into their works, not so much what they see but what they feel.These series of books are mere collections of these various artists. In many cases children will benefit from talking about them with knowledgeable teachers and readers. You can, of course, get vast information on all of these artists on the internet or other books. I recommend that.

I have learned a lot about Mary Cassatt and her painting style by looking at the pictures in this ebook. It isn't easy to find books of good art for children, or even just to introduce you to a valued past artist. I found it informative and interesting enough to share with my children. It is not easy to find good material with pictures of art for children. This fits the bill and is interesting enough to discuss the art aspects with young art appreciators and perhaps even aspiring painters. Well done! Thanks. :)

I enjoyed the detailed description of the Whole Armour of God it gave much better understanding of each part we put on. This book caused me to admit out loud to God some things I wasn't ready to do, but to get my deliverance and peace from things in my past. Purposefully seeking to allow God to meet my needs...this resonated with me the most. Letting go of my control, not acting as tho I'm trying to do what God wants to do FOR me...I am getting that now and I'm slowly but surely doing it and in turn it has increased my faith in Him!! Can't wait to see what's next from this brother! Be Blessed!

A thought provoking primer to greater biblical learning By JSeda This book is a tremendous resource for someone like myself who wants to better understand the bible and how it relates to me. Although you could read it in an afternoon, I found myself re-reading passages and giving them greater thought and consideration. It's oblivious that the author is well-versed in the Word, but he is able to give it perspective that enables me to better grasp the meaning. It gave me food for thought. I have more to learn but Working Out What God Has Worked In is a great place for me to start.

Dr. Merlino's Not Afraid to Get His Hands Dirty - a Great, Pull No Punches Read about Transforming Healthcare By Anthony L Cirillo As someone intimately involved with person-centered care initiatives and as a native of south Philadelphia where we pull no punches, I was very impressed with Dr. Merlino's candor and transparency. Drawing on his own personal stories and the great work he has led at the Cleveland Clinic, he gives you the warts and all version of today's tumultuous and contemptuous healthcare world. Whether it is flat out contesting the hospital as hotel comparison or taking people to task over patient experience initiatives as thinly veiled marketing tactics, he tells it like it is and provides a much-needed wake-up call to an industry in flux. Easily digestable end of chapter summaries provide the blueprint for how healthcare can transform itself while keeping the people we care for front and center.

Complicit and Entirely Inappropriate yet Tender and Enduring By Mooster As much as I want to say "don't read this book", O'Malley's willingness to expose the male brain at war, with pure, unadulterated honesty shrouded in explicit s*xual delusion gives Embarrassing Confessions of A Marine Officer a unique and never before reading experience or perspective for the reader. It is a "first of its' kind" and I think, albeit, complicit and entirely inappropriate as a whole, O'Malley's end goal of helping those who have suffered the ugliness of war and subsequent suicide causalities, can and will benefit from the humor he intended his readers to enjoy through his complete transparency. He is a pioneer of sorts into the land of veteran suicides in his attempt to bring awareness and help to those in need. So for that reason, I can stand behind his first published achievement. I will also add that the "gay chicken" chapter had me laugh out loud several times and let it be noted that I found the need for male affection and companionship in such grisly environments somewhat tender and enduring. I'm looking forward to reading his blog and contributing to his organization.

You'll be taken back with each flip of the page. It doesn't matter what grunt unit you've been in because everything written is so relatable that it will bring you right back.
