Meditations (Medieval Greek: Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν Ta eis heauton, literally "[that which is] to himself") is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 CE, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs. Particularity of this edition: - Complete work: all 12 books - Table of contents - Annotations from Wikipedia

Amazon.com Review One measure, perhaps, of a book's worth, is its intergenerational pliancy: do new readers acquire it and interpret it afresh down through the ages? The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated and introduced by Gregory Hays, by that standard, is very worthwhile, indeed. Hays suggests that its most recent incarnation--as a self-help book--is not only valid, but may be close to the author's intent. The book, which Hays calls, fondly, a "haphazard set of notes," is indicative of the role of philosophy among the ancients in that it is "expected to provide a 'design for living.'" And it does, both aphoristically ("Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.") and rhetorically ("What is it in ourselves that we should prize?"). Whether these, and other entries ("Enough of this wretched, whining monkey life.") sound life-changing or like entries in a teenager's diary is up to the individual reader, as it should be. Hays's introduction, which sketches the life of Marcus Aurelius (emperor of Rome A.D. 161-180) as well as the basic tenets of stoicism, is accessible and jaunty. --H. O'Billovich

Review Lots of good feedback on this wonderful book, including calls from Andrew Roberts and AC Grayling to say how much they are enjoying it. This is translating very well in to coverage. With radio features including FRONT ROW (BBC RADIO 4) on Wednesday 5 April which included not only a clip from the film Gladiator but also from the lovely Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs who wasa fan. And the producer says this generated the most calls they've had for along time, asking for further details of the book. THE VERB (BBC RADIO 3) included an interview with the translator Gregory Hays. "See the movie, read the book. Hard on the heels of Richard Harris's portrayal of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator comes a new translation of that ruler's celebrated Meditations." JOAN SMITH, THE INDEPENDENT "Sparky and slangily readable, and for those who know Marcus only as the Richard Harris character in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, this is a chance to become better aquainted" BLAKE MORRISON, THE GUARDIAN We are expecting good review and thinkpieces including THE EVENING STANDARD, and THE OBSERVER with a feature in the DAILY MAIL tbc.

Review “The emperor Marcus Aurelius, the proverbial philosopher-king, produced in Greek a Roman manual of piety, the Meditations, whose impact has been felt for ages since. Here, for our age, is his great work presented in its entirety, strongly introduced and freshly, elegantly translated by Gregory Hays for the Modern Library.”—Robert Fagles

984 of 995 people found the following review helpful. steel for your spine By DDW Reviews One should have more than one translation for Meditations. Note this difference between Maxwell Staniforth's translation in 1964 (Penguin Classics) and Hay's 2002 translation in these two passages.1964: When force of circumstance upsets your equanimity, lose no time in recovering your self-control, and do not remain out-of-tune longer than you can help. Habitual recurrence to the harmony will increase your mastery of it.2002: When jarred, unavoidably, by circumstances, revert at once to yourself, and don't lose the rhythm more than you can help. You'll have a better grasp of the harmony if you keep going back to it.-----------------1964: Adapt yourself to the environment in which your life has been cast, and show true love to the fellow-mortals with whom destiny has surrounded you.2002: The things ordained for you - teach yourself to be at one with those. And the people who share them with you - treat them with love. With real love.------------------The 1964 version is regal, while the 2002 (Hays') version is Aurelius writing, quickly, in a spiral notebook while on horseback, the equivalent of "memo to myself."Reading this book is like taking a cold shower, or visiting a favorite bartender, who insists on serving you coffee, not drink. Hays has brought us a Marcus Aurelius who puts his hand on your shoulder, looks you in the eye, and tells you like it is: Get over yourself. You can't change the world. Do your best and realize you are of this earth. Human experience is muddy, so what? This book is best read in tough times, when you could use a little steel in your spine.

165 of 166 people found the following review helpful. a superlative translation By garwood Other reviewers here have commented about the work itself, so I would just add a note about this specific translation. One of the most difficult tasks for a reader interested in non-English language work (and works from classical times in particular) is to choose an appropriate translation. Of course, what counts as `appropriate' is somewhat subjective. What I was looking for was a translation that is clear and accurate; one that manages to convey something of a feeling for the both the person who wrote, and the times they wrote in. In this Staniforth excels.Unlike say, the Benjamin Jowett translation of Plato which (at least to my ears) has a distinctly Victorian ring, or the popular new age paraphrases of many of the Stoics (and in truth they are paraphrases or adaptations rather than translations), to me Staniforth (whose translation dates from 1964) strikes just the right balance. The words of Marcus Aurelius are rendered intelligibly and with a dignity and awareness of the historical context. The reader is neither forced to re-read and ponder (i.e., speculatively re-translate), nor wince at inappropriate colloquialisms of 21st century English. Better still, one can immediately perceive and appreciate the times in which the work was written. No mean accomplishment, to say the least.Of course, each reader needs to make this judgment for themselves. Amazon provides an excellent (and free) way of doing this with its `search inside this book' feature, which is enormously useful for anyone making this decision.

The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy. Marcus Aurelius delivers many insightful and inspirational observations about human nature and the human condition, and he makes an excellent rational argument for seeking the good and for acting modestly and continently. I cannot think or a more satifying and moving work, and it is all the more poignant because it was written by a man who wielded almost absolute power and lived surrounded by the luxury, yet managed to keep things in perspective and to occupy himself only with what truly matters. One sentence captures perfectly the spirit of his writings: "Where a man can live, there he can also live well." An extraordinary testimony of wisdom and fortitude.

Kate Harris, a lecturer in her late thirties, is attacked in her home and left for dead. The assault and the hate letters she starts to receive bring to light the past she longs to leave behind, a past which includes the son she chose to give away. What happens to Kate also affects the people she counts as friends and colleagues. She has loved her best friend, Nicky, for a long time but Nicky is happily married with two young children, and Kate is determined never to damage the lives of those she cares for. However, when she makes the decision to contact the father of her son, Kate sets in motion a series of terrifying events she has no control over. Can she save herself and those she loves from the menacing enemy who stalks them? Thorn in the Flesh was longlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger Awards 2006. Reviews: "Thorn in the Flesh is emotionally stirring, dealing with circumstances that most of us will never understand ... Despite never having been in Kate's circumstances, the story made me think about my own life and where I am currently. I recommend the book to everyone." (Open Book Society Reviews) "Thorn in the Flesh is a slow burning mystery woven into the ordinary lives of a close-knit group of friends. This is a great choice for readers who prefer to get to know characters well before the plot heats up. The payoff at the end is well worth the initial emotional investment!" (Long and Short Reviews)

Thorn in the Flesh, by Anne Brooke

Review Thorn in the Flesh is a gripping psychological thriller whose central character Kate goes through a whole gamut of emotions from the deeply sensual to the tenderness of true friendship, betrayal, loss, fear, a sense of personality annihilation and nail biting terror. I am constantly amazed by Anne Brooke's ability to understand abnormal levels of perversion. But at the end of this novel one is left not with the feeling of an abnormal caricature but more with a query and urge to understand what strange twist of otherwise normal events could have sown such a tragic seed. -- Margaret Gill, author of Narwhal

About the Author Anne Brooke lives in Surrey, UK. She is a multi-published author in a variety of genres, including gay erotic romance, fantasy, comedy, thrillers, biblical fiction and the occasional chicklit novel. Her fiction has been shortlisted for the Harry Bowling Prize (for novels set in London) and the Royal Literary Fund Scheme. When not writing, she spends time in the garden attempting to differentiate between flowers and weeds. Occasionally, she can also be found in the kitchen making cakes. Every now and again, they are edible.

Interesting Read By LAS Reviewer How do you outsmart a villain who knows all of your deepest, darkest secrets? After she is violently assaulted, all Kate Harris wants to do is return to her old life. While she certainly needs time to recover from such a traumatic experience, I was pleasantly surprised to see Kate being surrounded by such sympathetic friends, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers as she heals. It was even more gratifying to see Kate acknowledge what happened to her without allowing it to be the defining experience of her life. After the terror of the first scene the plot slows down for several chapters. I enjoyed the chance to learn more about the longstanding friendship between Kate and Nicky, her best friend. They clearly have known one another a long time, and their bond is so strong that even when they're grouchy I felt the love and concern behind their complaints. What I didn't understand about this novel was why Kate refuses to tell the police about the anonymous threats she receives after she's discharged from the hospital. At the very least they could have documented what was happening in case her tormentor decides to escalate the situation. Yes, sometimes the police don't respond to these things appropriately, but I didn't understand why a woman who had positive interactions with them in the past wouldn't try a little harder to keep the authorities up-to-date.With that being said, Kate Harris is a wonderfully nuanced protagonist. As I read this book, I felt like I was catching up with an old, dear friend whose choices occasionally frustrate me. At times I wished Kate was a real person so I could gently scold her for making such poor decisions in the past. A woman as intelligent and socially aware as her really ought to know better, but the strong character development and attention to detail made this book impossible to put down.Thorn in the Flesh is a slow burning mystery woven into the ordinary lives of a close-knit group of friends. This is a great choice for readers who prefer to get to know characters well before the plot heats up. The payoff at the end is well worth the initial emotional investment!Originally posted at Long and Short Reviews

By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS reviewer DawnThorn in the Flesh begins with a horrifically traumatic event in Kate's life. Afterward Kate begins to examine her life.Is she happy? Is she where she wants to be? Are there things in her past that should be cleared up?Kate is a nuanced character. There were times I loved and hated her. She has a best friend, Nicky, but Kate has never really let Nicky "know" her. Kate holds back but Nicky confronts her. I was so proud of Kate when she decided to be fully honest with Nicky. We all need comfort at times. It's not shameful to ask for or need it.Kate didn't handle herself well in the past. She made some serious mistakes in how she treated others. But she did not deserve what happened to her because of it.Kate examines herself and makes the necessary changes. Her emotional growth throughout the book is astounding. She was committed to starting a new life. The plot twist is off the charts! I can't say more or it would be too obvious. I will say this, Thorn in the Flesh is emotionally stirring, dealing with circumstances that most of us will never understand. I began the story not having much respect for Kate. By the end of the book, I felt as if I'd been to hell and back with her.Despite never having been in Kate's circumstances, the story made me think about my own life and where I am currently.I recommend the book to everyone. I think men who have a loved one who has gone through such an event will understand more if they read Thorn in the Flesh. This review and more at openbooksociety dot com

Hartman I recently had the opportunity to read this work, and was completely blown away by the quality of the writing. Brooke manages to create brilliantly flawed characters, and thrusts them into a story that never becomes cliche or boring. At times suspenseful, at times heartbreaking and at all times a story worth delving into, Brooke presents a story that doesn't necessarily allow itself to be pigeonholed into a specific genre, thus broadening its appeal to many readers. It started with the yellow jacket wasp I found in the street. Even though it was dead, it had such an animated quality, almost cartoon-like. I carefully cradled it in my hand and was immediately inspired to paint it. Soon cicada were emerging, leaving their scarab-like shell behind. Dragonflies were hovering about my head. My insect treasures mounted; firefly, butterfly, beetle, ladybug and more, arousing my inner scientist. The local library and bookstore provided my trove of compelling facts and educational information. A journal of bugs and insects took shape. What followed was a selection of bugs from a to z. I wanted to hold a special book in my hand recognizing the beauty of nature. So I created my own, "Abecedarian Insectarium, Bugs and Insects A to Z"

By koolmom I had always heard that a number of benefits could come from acupuncture, but that would never work for me because I hate needles. I have been looking for other means of healing therapies that are a lot less invasive. Recently I have been researching Tuina Chinese Massage. In my quest to learn more and perhaps even learn some techniques I could do at home, I bought this book. I am writing this review because the book really delivered in more ways than one. First and foremost I learned Tuina has many more benefits than I realized. Also, I learned it is very similar to acupuncture but without needles! As well, I learned many helpful techniques that I can do myself. For me that was the best part of the book. The author did a good job explaining step by step how to do each. Now all that’s left for me is to go practice what was shown so I can do these in my home.

Dear Catastrophe Waitress: A Novel, by Brendan Halpin

From Publishers Weekly Vindictive songs change the course of two people's lives in Halpin's third novel (after Long Way Back), a funny and unlikely story about mending broken hearts. Philippa Strange, a fresh-out-of-high-school punk rock girl, divides her time between an alcoholic mother in Cincinnati and a rocker boyfriend in London and becomes unfortunately notorious after her boyfriend immortalizes her cheating ways—and her name—in a popular song. Meanwhile, shortly after Mark Norris finishes college in Philadelphia, he finds himself the victim of "premature ejaculation libel" when his ex-girlfriend cracks the Top 40 with her hit song, "Two Minute Man." Mark stumbles his way though toxic relationships as a pregnant Philippa, back in the States for good, fakes her death and assumes a new identity to escape from a violent boyfriend. Oddly, Mark's bumbling early adulthood is more engaging to read about than Philippa's flight, and though it's a given that the two will end up together, Halpin's assured prose and knack for mischievously comic turns ensure a smooth ride into happily ever after. From Booklist In alternating chapters, Halpin (Long Way Back, 2006) details dual stories covering 20 years in the lives of punk-rock-loving Philippa and sensitive Mark. When Philippa's London musician boyfriend catches her cheating, he immortalizes the incident in a wildly popular song that sends her scurrying back to Cincinnati. Meanwhile, Mark meets brooding bisexual Raquel, who takes off for L.A. after college and humiliates him with her chart-topping "Two-Minute Man." Things continue to spiral downward for both as Philippa becomes pregnant by an abusive lover and completely cuts off contact with her family and friends, changing her identity and moving to Boston, while Mark, who has become an elementary-school teacher, is dumped by his corporate lawyer fiancee. Halpin's story sometimes feels too superficial because of the time compression. But when he is at his best--his tenderhearted depictions of Mark's loneliness and inept romantic relationships and of the fraught but loving bond between Philippa and her strong-willed daughter--he proves himself to be an insightful observer of contemporary relationships. A funny and touching, if somewhat predictable, tribute to the brokenhearted. Joanne WilkinsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. PHILIPPA1983She’s wearing a white T-shirt with the artwork from the first Clash album on it. The sleeves are cut off. She drinks a St. Pauli Girl dark and sits on the hood of Brad Worthington’s Camaro. She watches as a circle of stoners, fellow members of the Walnut Prep class of 1983, the last class to enter high school in the 1970s, pass a bong around, shed an occasional tear, and sing along with the words they can understand from Yes’s “Starship Trooper,” which is blaring from inside of Bobby Shiffer’s house. She hates Yes, but she finds that she has kind of warmed to her Yes-listening classmates in the last few months. There are, after all, only fifty of them here at Walnut Prep, and they’ve been together since the first grade, and the fact that they are not as cool as she is no longer seems like a reason to openly scorn them. In fact, Philippa finds as she looks down into the grass at her stoned classmates that she feels real tenderness for them simply because she remembers them all as little kids, and because she’s never going to see them again after tonight and they are the only people who knew her before her parents split, before Mom started drinking, before she became the punk rock chick, back when she was just that little girl who really liked H. R. Pufnstuf. She opens the graduation program again and runs down the list of the names of her classmates and where they are going for college. She doesn’t know if Denison University is a stoner school already, but it certainly looks like it will be next year. She finds her own name: “Philippa Jane Strange: London Academy of Music.” She smiles to herself, unable to believe she got away with this. It’s her little private joke to herself, because what she’s going to do next year is what she’s done every summer since the seventh grade: go live at her dad’s flat in London and go to clubs and hear punk rock. It’s one in the afternoon. Philippa staggers down to the kitchen of her dad’s flat, turns on the electric kettle, puts a PG Tips tea bag into a cup, and sits down at the table. She’s only mildly hungover. Dad, as he does whenever he spends the night here and not at Ella’s, has left Philippa this morning’s Telegraph, Times, and Guardian on the table. Once the kettle whistles, Philippa pours the hot water out and sits down to read the Telegraph. From there she’ll move to The Times, and finish up with The Guardian. She and her dad have a joke about how she reads from right to left. Dad does the opposite, but with the same impulse: begin with the one you disagree with the most and work your way over to your side to see what the real story is.Philippa’s continued presence in her dad’s flat is a rebuke to both of their political convictions. Philippa, like her friends, fumes with outrage over what the Thatcher government is doing to the welfare state. Unlike her friends, she lives for free in a very smart flat and has food and booze money supplied to her by Simon Strange, an investment banker who belongs to the class of people that benefit most from the economic policies of the Tory government.Simon, like his friends and co-workers, yearns for the dismantling of the welfare state, for a more Americanized system where the government doesn’t act as nanny and people are forced to show a little personal responsibility. Unlike his friends and co-workers, Simon runs a little mini welfare state of his own, with an endless reservoir of guilt over the divorce and his subsequent return to the UK fueling a micro-economy that would disgust him on a macro scale: Philippa pays no rent, is not expected to work, and drinks up her spending money.Philippa is oblivious to any political irony in her situation, but Simon is not, principally because Ella points it out to him on a daily basis. Philippa’s causing a terrible strain on Simon’s relationship with Ella, but she’s oblivious to this, too.She does, however, notice that the date on all the papers is October 1. At this point, she realizes, all of her classmates from Walnut Prep, even the ones who went to school in California, are in their little college dorms, happily marching on the treadmill that will lead them back to their dads’ companies, where they will be groomed to take over once they’ve gotten that BA under their belts. She feels superior to them, of course, but also, for the first time ever, a bit lost. She’s never been in London this late in the year. It’s starting to get cool and rainy, and it’s already getting dark much earlier, so that heady feeling of emerging from the pub two pints into a good booze-up at nine p.m. with the sun shining down is gone at least until next summer. And she’s starting to feel jaded about the music scene. The Clash are opening for the Who on a stadium tour of the US, for God’s sake, and she remembers being thirteen and packing into a sweaty club to see them and hearing “White Riot” for the first time and having her life changed as a result, and nothing currently happening in the clubs can touch anything that happened then. This is even true of Trevor’s band, the NHS. (It stands for the National Hate Service, and is supposed to serve as some kind of political commentary on the Tories’ attack on the National Health Service, but Trevor reads three fewer newspapers every day than Philippa does and writes songs principally about booze and sex.) Philippa loves watching them perform, because Trevor is so very sexy when he sings, and she likes watching his hands on the guitar and remembering them on her the night before, imagining them on her after the show. But she’s been with Trevor for nearly three months now, and the fog of infatuation is lifting, and she is forced to admit that the NHS is not the Clash. The phone rings twice in quick succession, and Philippa feels annoyed. Annoyed because she prefers the one long ring of US phones to the chirpy, insistent two-ring alert of British phones, annoyed because she’s only halfway through The Times, and she really likes to read all three papers before speaking to anyone, and most of all annoyed because she thinks it’s Trevor calling.Trevor is terrible on the phone, inarticulate and clumsy, and his matter-of-fact proclamations of lust—“Thinkin’ about your knickers today, Phil”—that actually seemed hot at first are now just kind of annoying. (She does enjoy the fact that the NHS’s latest single is called “Thinkin’ About Your Knickers,” though.) Also, he’s started stressing his poverty more and more recently (“I’m totally skint, Phil, buy us a pint”), and she’s beginning to suspect that he likes Simon’s money a lot more than her tits, which are another frequent topic of conversation. So the phone trills—Ringring! . . . Ringring!—and it just won’t stop, and she doesn’t want to answer it, but she can’t very well read The Times with that business going on, and she figures she’ll have to talk to Trevor at some point today, so she may as well get it over with. She picks up the phone with her best punk rock attitude: “Yeah?”“Uh, hello?” It’s a woman. Not Trevor. Not Ella calling to tell her to get a fucking job, either. This is not a fear on Philippa’s radar at the moment, though it’s a conversation that Ella is currently planning. No, it’s an American woman. But it’s not Mom.“Yeah?” Philippa says with more annoyance.“Um, Philippa?”“Speaking.”“It’s your aunt Betsy, honey. There’s . . . ,” and Aunt Betsy starts to cry. Philippa knows that nobody cries on a transatlantic phone call if it’s good news, and she knows Betsy wouldn’t spend the money on the phone call just to talk to her, and she knows she should be alarmed, or worried, or something, but she searches herself and finds nothing. She does manage to de-snottify her voice, though.“What is it, B? What’s wrong?”“It’s your mom, sweetie, she’s . . . there’s been an accident.”Is she dead? Do you mean she’s dead, Aunt B? Say what you mean, dammit! Philippa’s relieved to find that she cares about the answer to this question.“Is she okay?”“She . . . her leg is badly fractured in three places, and the steering wheel knocked her two front teeth out, and she’s bruised all over, but she . . .” More crying. “I’m sorry, sweetie. She’s going to walk again, they say they can fix her face, and she’s not in a coma or anything, but she’s pretty loopy on the pain medication right now.”“Jesus.” If she’s not dead, I’m not flying to Cincinnati, Philippa thinks. She sends her aunt telepathic messages: Don’t ask me to come back, because then I’ll have to say no, and then I’ll be a bad daughter, but I don’t want to come to Cincinnati, so if you just don’t ask, we’ll be fine.“She . . . she was drinking, honey.” Well, duh, Philippa wants to say. I’m guessing it was a one-car accident, too. “She wrapped her car around a tree on Clough Pike.” Silence. Philippa has nothing to say. The silence drags on for more microseconds, and Philippa knows this is where she’s supposed to say she’ll be on the next flight, that she’s rushing to her mother’s bedside.Instead she says, “What hospital’s she in?”“Mercy.” Of course it’s the closest one to Clough Pike, but Philippa remembers her mom taking her out of Mercy when she’d broken her arm sledding, and they told her she’d have to...

I loved this book. I loved Mark. he's the kind of guy that a girl would love to end up with and i loved Stacey. Phillipa was a complete mess, but Stacey was beautiful. I loved how her relationship with her daughter was not perfect, how she doubted herself, how he doubted himself, never seeing the greatness that they each possessed. It was a little predictable in some ways, but it's what readers want. It's what makes a happy ending. I highly recommend this book. If you like Nick Hornby, you'd like this, except i actually identify with this book more b/c the author seemed more intuned with a woman's mind.

Absorbing and touching pop-infused love story By John Hunt The Belle and Sebastian song of the same name seems to have provided the basic structure of this story of the convergence and romance of two damaged but likeable protagonists. The characters' extensive backstories are to some extent schematic (certain patterns from the past reassert themselves rather too obviously in the present), but the novel is enjoyable and absorbing, pop-literate without being obnoxious, and funny enough, with a voice that is always decent and humane.

I read it in two nights and didn't want it to be over. Halpin's characters are likeable and understandable. The book is incredibly readable. And he conveys the message that despite how hard life is, if you keep going day by day, trying to do better -- you just might!

The bladder extrophy and epispadias is a rare disease that affects 1 / 40,000 live births. Children present at birth a malformation of varying degrees of their in genitals with consequent problems of incontinence and genital organ dysfunction. The treatment of this condition is purely surgical and aims, in part, to achieve urinary continence in some cases, in a natural way. However most cases need to use intermittent catheterization. The second objective is to achieve an aesthetic and functional reconstruction of the external genital tract. In this context of informing and supporting those born with this rare condition the idea to create a story to be used in an educational context, came up. This is to educate on disability and rare diseases. It also represents a very useful means for going into schools where there are children with urogenital conditions, because this teaches the class about diversity. Through the story, and the use of drawings we want to tell a story about a person and not about the disease and to see the person first as an individual and only then the condition they have.

The study of the brain continues to expand at a rapid pace providing fascinating insights into the basic mechanisms underlying nervous system illnesses. New tools, ranging from genome sequencing to non-invasive imaging, and research fueled by public and private investment in biomedical research has been transformative in our understanding of nervous system diseases and has led to an explosion of published primary research articles.

Diseases of the Nervous System summarizes the current state of basic and clinical knowledge for the most common neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. In a systematic progression, each chapter covers either a single disease or a group of related disorders ranging from static insults to primary and secondary progressive neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopmental illnesses, illnesses resulting from nervous system infection and neuropsychiatric conditions. Chapters follow a common format and are stand-alone units, each covering disease history, clinical presentation, disease mechanisms and treatment protocols. Dr. Sontheimer also includes two chapters which discuss common concepts shared among the disorders and how new findings are being translated from the bench to the bedside. In a final chapter, he explains the most commonly used neuroscience jargon. The chapters address controversial issues in current day neuroscience research including translational research, drug discovery, ethical issues, and the promises of personalized medicine.

The chapters address controversial issues in current day neuroscience research including translational research, drug discovery, ethical issues, and the promises of personalized medicine.

This book provides an introduction for course adoption and an introductory tutorial for students, scholars, researchers and medical professionals interested in learning the state of the art concerning our understanding and treatment of diseases of the nervous system.

About the Author Dr. Sontheimer is a researcher and educator with a life-long interest in Neuroscience. A native of Germany, he obtained a Masters degree in evolutionary comparative Neuroscience, where he worked on the development of occulomotor reflexes. In 1989, he obtained a doctorate in Biophysics and Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience form the University of Heidelberg studying biophysical changes that accompany the development of oligodendrocytes, the principle myelinating cells of the nervous system. He moved to the United States, where he later became a citizen, for post-doctoral studies at Yale University. His independent research career began at Yale in 1991 and continued at the University of Alabama Birmingham from 1994-2015, and, more recently at Virginia Tech. His research focuses on the role of glial support cells in health and disease. His laboratory has made major discoveries that led to two clinical trials using novel compounds to treat malignant gliomas. His research led to over 170 peer-reviewed publications. For the clinical development of his discoveries, Dr. Sontheimer started a biotechnologies company, Transmolecular Inc., which conducted both phase I and II clinical trials with the anti-cancer agent chlorotoxin. This technology was recently acquired by Morphotec Pharmaceuticals, who will be conducting the phase III clinical trials. As educator, Dr. Sontheimer has been active in teaching Medical Neuroscience, graduate Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience, and, for the past 10 years, he has offered both graduate and undergraduate courses on Diseases of the Nervous System. In 2005, Dr. Sontheimer became director of the Civitan International Research Center, a philanthropically supported center in Birmingham AL devoted to the study and treatment of children with developmental disabilities, ranging from Down’s syndrome to Autism. In this capacity, Dr. Sontheimer was frequently tasked explaining complex scientific processes to a lay audience. Recognizing the need to further educate the public about neurological disorders using language that is accessible to an educated public motivated Dr. Sontheimer to write a textbook on Diseases of the Nervous system. To assure that the material is comprehensive yet readily understandable, he wrote large parts of this text while on sabbatical leave at Rhodes College in Memphis, where he taught undergraduates while testing his book on this group of talented third and fourth year Neuroscience students. In 2015 Dr. Sontheimer was tapped to found a School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech with the goal to offer a unique Neuroscience education to an increasing number of undergraduates. As the first of its kind, this enterprise will ultimately represent an entire college dedicated to a variety of Neuroscience experiences and include majors in clinical, experimental, cognitive, systems, computational and social Neuroscience. Enrollment is expected to exceed 1000 undergraduate students. Dr. Sontheimer continues to manage a very active research laboratory at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute where he involves a spectrum of trainees ranging from undergraduates to post-doctoral scientists. Dr. Sontheimer has already trained well over 50 Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows.

Nowadays, guinea pigs are popular pets among many people. The guinea pig is not only adorable, but a cornerstone of the Andean civilizations; there is so much more to guinea pigs than their current position as a very popular pet for company, showing, and breeding. In places outside of modern society, they still hold a place in the rituals and healing of many peoples. As a pet more delicate than rabbits or cat, or especially dogs, the guinea pig survives as it is due to thousands of years of breeding and protection by humans. The guinea pig is an animal that has captured the imagination of many people, from Beatrix Potter and C.S. Lewis to the ancient peoples of the Andean area. Hopefully, it will capture your imagination as well!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. some guests overstay their welcome and others are just plain annoying. Uninvited guests can be escorted out and asked ... By Martha A. Cheves How do you say goodbye when you are still here? How do you say goodbye before your thoughts, desires, and wishes disappear from your mind? What happens when all that's left of you is a human shell? Everyone invites guests to their homes for dinner, or just to talk. But, some guests overstay their welcome and others are just plain annoying. Uninvited guests can be escorted out and asked to leave, hopefully never to return. One uninvited guest mad its way into my mother's mind and refused to leave.I've known people who have family members that have literally lost their minds. Or better yet, lost everything stored within their minds. They forget where they are, where they are going, who they are and who the strangers that keep showing up might be. They forget to eat or can't remember if they did eat. They forget the names of their favorite food and even their own children. As the days go by they lose more and more of what took years to fill their minds. Eventually that full mind is empty and hollow. What causes this? You've probably already answered that question with that terrible disease called Alzheimer.I've personally never been exposed to Alzheimer but after reading The Vanishing Mind I feel that has changed. The way the Author combined the experience as a caregivers/family member and the journals written by her mother when her mind was still there enough to write, you can't help but feel as if you're a part of the family or at least a close friend. The insight I found through this book has me watching my own loved ones more closely with the possible chance that they may show some of these signs. I'm also watching myself too.Author Fran Lewis goes one step further in helping those who are faced with this dreadful disease. She has included tips for the caregivers stressing on how to speak in a way that may be a little easier for them to understand; how to help them with simple things like eating, dressing and bathing; how to find activities that they may understand and enjoy; and she even gives you a list of agencies that can be beneficial in helping you with their care, understanding their problems and most important - how to deal with your own feelings. This is a book that I recommend to everyone - young and old. It might just be the book that will help you better cope with those you love who just might experience this heart breaking disease called Alzheimer.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Heartbreaking but also heart warming, inspirational and informative. A must read. By Ann Stanmore What a wonderful, although heartbreaking book this is. There is so much here that needs to be read by everyone. Within this inspiring book Fran Lewis gives so much information to help others not only understand what can happen when Alzheimer disease strikes, but how to get help if it is needed. Fran describes some of the help her family were given by Caregivers and Home Health Aides. The dedication and compassion of these people is amazing. In Ruth’s own words we learn something about this well loved lady. Along with moving family memories and tributes we see how much she was loved. Actually at this point I had to take a break from reading as the tears were flowing. So very touching. We journey with Ruth as she instils her own high values to her children and how she was always there for them, on to the early signs of this awful disease. This normal happy family didn’t realise how dramatically their lives would change when Alzheimers was first diagnosed. Fran very bravely, in her own caring way, helps others to understand how it is for anyone affected by this disease. There were many things to learn. There is so much information within the pages of this book that along with reading the story of Ruth, we can begin to understand Alzheimers and how much help is available.Although at the start of this review I say this is a heartbreaking book, it is also heart-warming. The love shown throughout this story can almost be felt. Many of us have been touched in some way by someone with Alzheimers disease, maybe a friend of a friend, a close relative or just someone you know, but few of us really understand it. I urge everyone to read this book - it really can help.I give thanks to the author Fran Lewis for sharing this story.I highly recommend this - it deserves five stars

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not only is this a poignant story, but it was so helpful! By B. Lieberman I was not fortunate enough to meet Ruth but while I was learning about this illness, I felt it was happening someone I felt I knew already - and admired. I was especially moved by Ruth’s point of view for the section, "Life as I see it now." Wow, that was excellent writing. I also enjoyed the anecdotes and the poems. It was fascinating to learn about her relationships with the author and the rest of her family. That history was impactful and very relatable. But beyond being informative, the advice about being a health care provider is so very valuable. The story is a wonderful tribute. Ruth's life was important to the people who knew and loved her, but thanks to this writing effort, Ruth's life will be important to many others.
