Good, but By ja in va Lots of interesting, fascinating and some quite surprising facts about the many creatures we share this planet with and well worth reading to learn some things, some pretty cool and some pretty scary. But some that aren't either. Like a certain fox mentioned. Well house cats do the same thing here when hunting pocket gophers and robins do the same when searching for earthworms. Another problem is that some more info would be appreciated at times like where some of these crearutes live like the reel fish and what are the odds of me eating one. And a rather unfortunate problem with many of these factoid books is the seeming compulsion that many editors of these types of books seem to have and that's adding a "humorous" comment either before or after the factoid. Honest folks, these things are a detraction I could do without. But just my opinion. Maybe some enjoy them. Regardless, well worth reading for someone like me who enjoys rhe learning that goes along with these trivia books. Good for those with a trivial mind like mine.

We've even read them to each other over dinner. For two animals lovers like ourselves, animal trivia is a blast. What can I say? We're easily entertained by animals, (laughing).

In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth. So begins the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament and one of the world's oldest tales. In Genesis Beginning, author Brian M. Boyce offers a Biblical account of creation re-told in rhymed verse.

Helping the Bible come alive, this picture book geared toward children tells the story of how God created the earth and mankind in an understandable format. Taking scenes from the Bible, Boyce explores the timeless questions involving God and the universe. Through rhyme and illustration, he shares some of the world's most ancient stories, fascinating in their account of the human condition.

What would you put in a bath tub

That was as big as the bowels of the Earth?

It was easy for God to make something

To fill up the tides and the surf.

He made fishes from wishes to ride in the splishes

And eels and whales galore.

They ride on the tides, in deep caves abide

And sleep near the ocean's rock floor.

Monsters and creatures and beings

That fumed and bloomed and roared.

Some of them still swim around us,

Others died with the last dinosaurs.

Her tales of kids' names and toy trends struck a chord with me. As a former employee of an elementary school, I could identify with the highs and lows throughout the academic year. This book had me nodding my head in agreement and laughing out loud. Mrs. Gardner truly is just shy of sainthood. The book is well written and eye opening.

Carrie Malinowski takes you on a wild field trip inside the angst of a teacher's heart, where one by one, you'll meet the kids she's always dreamed of teaching. And some she never thought would be in her classroom. Like The Sleaze, "Wanna have sex at recess?" Or The Goat who eats all his Kleenex. And hers. Or The Naked Screamer who barricades herself in the bathroom and needs constant supervision and detailed documentation while Mrs. M keeps track of her and 28 other children. You will gasp at how much Mrs. M spends on classroom supplies, how alternately mean and noble parents can be and how children come to school knowing their "rights" long before they learn to read. You will laugh, you will cry and you will rejoice as Mrs. M. gains in wisdom and skill, and you will fall in love with her right along with her kids when she reads Timmy Mouse on the last day of school.I was a special educator at all levels, including administration, for 34 years and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Carrie has captured the experience of teaching in a way that is both enlightening, shocking, and touching. Clearly, she has a great sense of humor. It comes through in her writing and in her seeming ability to keep her sanity in what sounds like a maddening position. I have never been a teacher. But I am a parent. I suggested that my daughter read this book as she has one child in elementary school and another one with a few years before that. I feel every parent will gain a lot of understanding and compassion for those who teach their children. I had no idea what types of situations a teacher is expected to deal with on a daily basis, or that they are expected to spend thousands of dollars of their own money on classroom supplies. Eye opening is a good way to describe this book. Kudos to you Carrie for presenting your experience in such an honest and engaging manner.

It's much easier for us to grab and look than to go to our computer and "look it up." We don't have I-phones or tablets in our pockets but the book is readily available. We bought this because our previous edition was becoming out-of-date.

I went for this first thing when I saw in the author's bio that Mr. Raven has over 20 years experience in heading his own security firm. The best way to beat the bad guy, is to out-fox him or her. And that's what is provided here, down to the detail in all aspects of your life and belongings AND information trails (amongst the most valuable/vulnerable)-- about how the criminal-burglar goes about their nefarious 'craft'... if I may call it that.Taking here craft, to Top craft, and all the whistles in between, I am very pleased with this book both for its lucidity, and its simplicity. You won't get over-whelmed: Paul won't let you!

Very scholarly and thorough history of mental healing in all its many forms By karl melanson A bit tedious reading but containing much interesting history and insights into healing methods from ancient cultures to modern times. Very thorough and comprehensive. Interesting reading for anyone interested in where we've been in this area of healing.

By Daisy S This is a very detailed read, however, if you want to learn how healing was performed in many ways such as relics, rituals, charms, healers, and so many ways over the past 3,000 years plus, this is the book to consider. For me, I am on a healing journey and also love to study history. This book is just what I was looking for being the history buff that I am. So even though this book went into great detail it was never boring for me.* If you are into history and love to read, I will highly suggest this book for you. If you are looking for a shorter book on more modern day natural healing, this may not be the best book for you.Still for the price paid (0.00), it is a great read!

The second edition of this highly praised textbook provides an introduction to tensors, group theory, and their applications in classical and quantum physics. Both intuitive and rigorous, it aims to demystify tensors by giving the slightly more abstract but conceptually much clearer definition found in the math literature, and then connects this formulation to the component formalism of physics calculations. New pedagogical features, such as new illustrations, tables, and boxed sections, as well as additional “invitation” sections that provide accessible introductions to new material, offer increased visual engagement, clarity, and motivation for students.

Part I begins with linear algebraic foundations, follows with the modern component-free definition of tensors, and concludes with applications to physics through the use of tensor products. Part II introduces group theory, including abstract groups and Lie groups and their associated Lie algebras, then intertwines this material with that of Part I by introducing representation theory.  Examples and exercises are provided in each chapter for good practice in applying the presented material and techniques.

Prerequisites for this text include the standard lower-division mathematics and physics courses, though extensive references are provided for the motivated student who has not yet had these.  Advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in physics and applied mathematics will find this textbook to be a clear, concise, and engaging introduction to tensors and groups.

Reviews of the First Edition

"Jeevanjee’s [text] is a valuable piece of work on several counts, including its express pedagogical service rendered to fledgling physicists and the fact that it does indeed give pure mathematicians a way to come to terms with what physicists are saying with the same words we use, but with an ostensibly different meaning.  The book is very easy to read, very user-friendly, full of examples...and exercises, and will do the job the author wants it to do with style.”

The book is divided into two distinct parts, the first one (Chapters 1-3) dealing with linear algebra and tensors, the second focusing on group theory in physics (Chapter 4-6). provide a solid background for students, helping them to understand the more advanced literature on the subject without formal difficulties. this book not only fills a considerable pedagogical gap in the physical and mathematical literature, but also shows to what extent the material arises naturally within any consistent model of natural phenomena. (Rutwig Campoamor-Stursberg, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2012 i)

The aim of the monograph is to fill a definite gap in literature by connecting the component formalism intrinsic to physical computations to the abstract but more conceptual formulations of mathematical literature and to present interconnections between tensor analysis and group theory, to demonstrate their physical applications. It is destined for students of advanced-undergraduate level. Every chapter in endowed by exercises and problems. (Boris V. Loginov, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1229, 2012)"

For a little background, I was a math and physics double major as an undergraduate, but I didn't take any courses on Tensors or Lie Groups, which is why I decided to look into this text. This book introduces Tensors and Group Theory with far more rigor than you normally get within a Physics classroom, grad or undergrad. If you don't have a mathematics background, you should be OK looking at this book. While it certainly helps to have exposure to proof based math, the book starts at the foundations of groups and linear algebra so all the topics build naturally. In short, you will never be lost if you read carefully, so it's also perfect for an advanced undergraduate as well. The underlying mathematical structure of Physics that is covered in this text is usually only superficially learned through rote problem solving during grad school. This is a significant deficiency in graduate Physics pedagogy that this book concisely addresses. It's a shame no one has written something this accessible sooner. The author is very good at breaking the concepts down in his exposition. It is definitely worth rereading from time to time, as there is usually a new insight to be gained from the text. The exercises and examples in the book are also well chosen. They are usually pretty short, but very illustrative. It's pretty much always clear how the concepts tie to Physics when you work through them.In short, I found this book to be extremely helpful. It provides a good framework to understand much of the advanced mathematics that one encounters in graduate school.

It moves quickly and stays interesting without losing the reader. My favorite thing about it is the quasi-rigorous approach: rather than proving every statement, Jevanjee provides references to other authors for the proofs and instead focuses primarily on definitions, concepts, and examples. He also takes a thoroughly modern perspective (e.g. tensors are linear functions), though not without making helpful connections to the older terminology used frequently in physics books.

I am a Materials Scientist with a Physics background, and yet tensors have always been a little mysterious to me. This text lays the mathematical framework you need in order to understand tensors (and group theory), while providing concrete examples in physical contexts; everything is exceptionally clear and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to any Physicist who feels the way I used to feel about tensors (i.e. you can work the math, but don't have a clear understanding of why it's working). Great text.

New York Air: The View from Above, by George Steinmetz

Review “Stunning aerial photos show a side of New York you’ve never seen.” (Huffington Post)“These aerial views of New York City will take your breath away.” (Fortune)“George Steinmetz’s new photo book, New York Air: The View From Above, presents an unparalleled visual feast of this well-known metropolis. Every photo offers a new perspective and a level of detail that turns familiar places into never-seen-before spectacles. Popular views are transformed, and an exclusive, secretive New York is revealed: the curvy contours of Central Park’s trails encircling baseball fields blanketed with snow; the contrast of old and new as the glowing Freedom Tower competes with the iconic Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges; or the privilege of looking into Lady Liberty’s neoclassical eyes.” (TIME)“The best view of New York might be from above, as the brilliant photographs of George Steinmetz help us to see. This is a city usually beyond our seeing. Steinmetz captures his images from a helicopter or ‘a flying lawn chair’ he designed, freeing him to see the world’s deserts, oceans, jungles, cities. Not just look at them. See them. Suddenly, through his eyes, we are above New York. On first seeing the Steinmetz images, I felt again, for the first time in several years, a sense of wonder.“ (Pete Hamill)“[Steinmetz] sees the city’s landmarks with new eyes, presenting a feast of unexpected color and geometry in 120 photographs that test your powers of recognition.” (The New York Times)

About the Author Before he turned to photographing New York from a helicopter, George Steinmetz documented the Earth’s remote and exotic regions from his motorized paraglider, working mostly for National Geographic and GEO magazines. His previous books include Desert Air, African Air, and Empty Quarter. He lives in Glen Ridge, New Jersey

A Unique View of the Big Apple By Danny Strunk Having grown up pouring over Robert Cameron's "Above New York," I'm always excited to see a book of aerial urban photos, especially of New York City. As such, I bought New York Air immediately upon coming across it. I'm glad I did. Initially I felt the photos in New York Air were a bit too close-up. But I realized I was trying to put my own expectations on the book, and not taking it for what it was. Whereas Robert Cameron captured the city's scope, Steinmetz captures its humanity. Humans rarely made a presence in Above New York, whereas they are found frequently in New York Air -- on rooftops, in parks, inside building windows. New York Air gives the city a pulse, exploring the interesting textures and patterns of the city. Window-lines become hypnotizing artwork. Rooftops reveal myriad easter eggs unseen from the sidewalk. New York is a city that can appear new again from infinite angles, and George Steinmetz captured a beautiful one.

By Phil Corsetti Beatiful images, but I would have like to have seen more from the boroughs instead of Manhattan. There were some from the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn, but not quite enough for me.

The city is alive By Laura Gorgeous!Ever since we found out we were moving to NYC this spring, my husband has been obsessed with looking at aerial pictures of NYC online. He would run in from a different room with his phone outstretched in his hand, shoving the "MOST AMAZING PHOTO OF NYC I HAVE EVER SEEN" in my face. Each time I would roll my eyes. Why on earth would I want to see pictures of things from that angle? It's a city! With buildings! Ugh.So naturally, I bought this for my husband for Christmas. And then! Then I sneaked a peak at this book! The pictures are beautiful and so full of life and light. This book has made me that much more excited about our upcoming move. I ate up the captions and craved more information. It's very nicely put together. Everyone in the family argues over who gets to look at it next.I almost passed this book by based on the small quantity of reviews, but I am so glad I did not.Also- remove the dusk jacket to see the beautiful cover.

"A charming portrait of the Smokies, their people, and a wonderful way of life." --Deborah Smith, New York Times bestselling authorSet in Tennessee's postcard-perfect Smoky Mountains, Lin Stepp's Makin' Miracles is an inspiring tale that reveals why love and forgiveness are most important just when they seem most impossible. . . Zola Devon has always been a little different. Half Tahitian, with long black hair and dark eyes, she's especially distinctive in the mountain town of Gatlinburg. She even stocks her gift shop, Nature's Corner, with items that reflect her island heritage and tantalize tourists. But it's her spot-on intuition that truly sets Zola apart. When she gets a hunch about a person, she's almost always right. And when the surly photographer who owns the gallery next door starts meddling in her business, she can only hope that, for once, her instincts are wrong. The one thing Spencer Jackson loves more than his camera is the majestic scenery of the Smoky Mountains. Reeling from his painful past, he's settled in a cabin in the woods to train his lens on the breathtaking landscape. A woman as uniquely beguiling as Zola could only throw his simple, uncomplicated days into chaos--and force him to lay bare his darkest secrets. But as their lives become unavoidably intertwined, they both may discover the beauty of the truth, and the joy of the unexpected. Praise for Lin Stepp and her Smoky Mountain Novels"I've finally come across someone that believes in all the things that I do. . .love, family, faith, intrigue, mystery, loyalty, romance, and a great love for our beloved Smoky Mountains." –Dolly Parton"A wonderful, new Southern voice." --Joan Medlicott, author of the bestselling The Ladies of Covington series

Weaver of Different Threads By Susan-Editor I like the way Lin weaves different threads into her stories The threads of mystery, family, and purposes all intertwined to enhance not only the story but the characters. She finds a way to take you by the hand and lead you on a journey in the book and you see the personality of the characters growing in confidence as the story flows.. I am obviously drawn to the settings of her books, as I live in Tennessee and the areas are some of my favorites places to visit. Her books are a definite to put on your book list to read. This is an author who knows how to deliver a story and leave you wanting to read the next one. Every time I finish a book, I can't wait for the next one.

Having spent a good portion of my life in East Tennessee and having loved the mountains since I was a child, I am always intrigued by the setting of these books. It's familiar and feels like home to me.In this latest installment, we find the Tahitian-American beauty named Zola, a bit out of place in Gatlinburg with her dark features and her nature store. When she meets Spencer, a photographer, sparks fly almost immediately between them. Yet with Zola's intuitive gifts, she knows that something is wrong. When she tries to convince Spencer, their relationship suffers....until he finds out that she is right. This is a sweet, faith-based love story, a story of redemption, hope, and forgiveness and one well worth the read! You'll be as captivated by the lovely scenery as you are by the well-told story!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A heartwarming story By LindaH I love Lin Stepp's books about the characters living close to the Smoky Mountains. They are usually family-oriented with faith in the Lord. In this book, Zola Devon runs a small gift shop in Gatlinburg in the shopping center where the Jackson Gallery is located. Spencer Jackson is a well-known photographer and has always been a loner until he meets Zola. She has the gift of sight and warns Spencer about the woman he is with. He becomes angry with her and storms out of the shop but later finds that she spoke the truth. He is attracted to Zola but is unsure of her “gift” and wonders if she will always know what he is thinking. She is attracted to him but does not like the sullen side he shows when discussing his family. How can she make him forgive the way he was treated and get on with life? Can these two make a life together?

*A New York Times bestseller*

Under the cover of night, deep in the desert of Afghanistan, a US Army handler led a Special Forces patrol with his military working dog. Without warning an insurgent popped up, his weapon raised. At the handler's command, the dog charged their attacker. There was the flash of steel, the blur of fur, and the sound of a single shot; the handler watched his dog take a bullet. During the weeks it would take the dog to heal, the handler never left its side. The dog had saved his life. Loyal and courageous, dogs are truly man's best friend on the battlefield. While the soldiers may not always feel comfortable calling the bond they form love, the emotions involved are strong and complicated. In War Dogs, Rebecca Frankel offers a riveting mix of on-the-ground reporting, her own hands-on experiences in the military working dog world, and a look at the science of dogs' special abilities-from their amazing noses and powerful jaws to their enormous sensitivity to the emotions of their human companions. The history of dogs in the US military is long and rich, from the spirit-lifting mascots of the Civil War to the dogs still leading patrols hunting for IEDs today. Frankel not only interviewed handlers who deployed with dogs in wars from Vietnam to Iraq, but top military commanders, K-9 program managers, combat-trained therapists who brought dogs into war zones as part of a preemptive measure to stave off PTSD, and veterinary technicians stationed in Bagram. She makes a passionate case for maintaining a robust war-dog force. In a post-9/11 world rife with terrorist threats, nothing is more effective than a bomb-sniffing dog and his handler. With a compelling cast of humans and animals, this moving book is a must read for all dog lovers-military and otherwise.

War Dogs: Tales of Canine Heroism, History, and Love, by Rebecca Frankel

Review

“In this moving yet uncompromising book, Rebecca Frankel pays a tender tribute to a very special breed of dogs and men.” ―The Washington Times

“An exceptionally interesting and surprisingly moving book.” ―Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post

“At the beginning of War Dogs, Rebecca Frankel presents us with an uncomfortable truth: 'There is something less complicated (and ironically more human) about relating to war through the story of a dog.' By the end of her heart-warming and heart-wrenching book, you'll know what she means -- if you don't already.” ―Becky Krystal, The Washington Post

“Is a war dog 'a furry but devoted weapon?' Frankel, a senior editor at Foreign Policy, asks. 'A faithful fighter? A fierce soldier? A guardian who keeps watch in the night?” ―Bronwen Dickey, The New York Times

“Military aficionados as well as dog lovers will learn from and enjoy this study of canine commandos and the service people who count on them.” ―Publishers Weekly

“The relationship between the handler and the handled is 'built first on a mutual trust...with a greater sense of loyalty and even love,' and [Frankel's] examples affectingly prove the bond.” ―Marine Corps Times

“This is a lovely book but it's also a surprising book. I opened it looking forward to reading a few good stories about the use of dogs in war. But midway through it, the realization hit me that this is something larger than that, and far deeper: it is a meditation on war and humans. It illuminates conflict from the unexpected angle of the allure of war, and the damage it does to both species.” ―Thomas E. Ricks, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist

“Full of compelling stories about military dogs and the handlers who love them (and are often told not to). ... Frankel has done a brilliant job of taking us into another world of dogs and soldiers in war.” ―Patricia McConnell, author of The Other End of the Leash

“Full of information about the nature, history, and training of military service canines, War Dogs sometimes reads like an adventure and sometimes reads like a novel that focuses on relationships and affection (here between a soldier and a dog). It is a very satisfying and often emotional read.” ―Stanley Coren, author of The Wisdom of Dogs

“A truly wonderful account of ‘man's best friend' in combat--and post-combat--missions: an inspirational, moving book that explains the extraordinary nature of the relationship between dogs and their military handlers in war and the equally extraordinary nature of the relationships between canine companions and military veterans dealing with the seen and unseen wounds of combat.” ―General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, Retired)

“As an active duty MWD handler, I am always thrilled but equally as wary to hear that someone has written about MWD teams (we're protective like that). Thankfully, Frankel has done a superb job in both communicating what these teams can do on a level that is understandable to civilian and military alike, and highlighting the unique and lasting bond built between dog and handler, a bond many could not otherwise understand.” ―Military Working Dogs Facebook Page Administrator

“Skillfully...brilliant narrative.” ―Military Review

Wallach This is a book that examines the almost symbiotic relationship between dogs and humans by applying to it a filter of the use of dogs in combat. It further focuses in by relating stories and anecdotes from the U.S. perspective over the past decade in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you are a dog lover, or have had dogs as part of your household and as pets, then the stories that the author tells will have you shaking your head in agreement as you recognize the same traits that your dog had with the ones that she tells stories about. There are ten chapters in this book and each covers a slightly different aspect of the overall theme that the author is exploring. Each chapter roves around and between stories of dogs and handlers in current wars, historical anecdotes of dogs of the wars past and how they fared, and scientific facts sprinkled in and around to illustrate the points even better. For instance, did you know that the average dog's nose has over 15o million scent receptors while human noses have many millions less? No surprise there to anyone who interacted with dogs, right? But how about a factoid thrown in to a different chapter that the Bloodhounds have over 300 million? These factoids are sprinkled here, there, and everywhere throughout the book and help illustrate the points that the author is making. In the center of the book is a section of about eight pages showing black and white photos of the dogs and people whose stories are in the book. This helps us visualize the people and dogs that are featured, but it did lead me to want more: more photos of the people and dogs; and more photos sprinkled through the text where those people and dogs are mentioned. Also, there are various historical tangents strewn about probably intended to illustrate various points although there is an emphasis on the writing of the British officer who was the first to discuss the training of war dogs during World War 1. Included amongst these tangents, one will find the obligatory discussion of how dogs evolved from wolves to become dogs and interact with people. The fundamental interaction between dogs and people is deemed to be trust, but this author goes so far as to speak of their direct connections as a form of love similar to that shared by all combat personnel who ultimately are fighting for their buddies next to them, rather than grand concepts of honor or patriotism. Again, referring back to the interactions between people and dogs in other environments than war leads to the direct correlation of the stories told here with what the dog lover experiences with his or her pooch.I really enjoyed reading this book because I focused on the training and capabilities of the amazing dogs. Yes, several of them die or get wounded as the stories unfold. But then, so do some of their human handlers. There are heartwarming stories woven through the text as well as emotionally raw stories, and stories that brought tears to my eyes. It is a good collection and an interesting exposition of the topic. If you are a dog lover, or want to understand how dogs contribute in combat, you will take away a lot from this book which I recommend.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. wonderful journalistic account of the dogs of war By E. Van Der Scratchy As a dog lover and a military spouse this book is right up my alley. The book is very well written for my taste, the author tells the stories of the dogs and their handlers like the journalist she is. The book does not rely on melodrama, you get the facts and the stories and your emotions are allowed to come from your understanding rather than being manipulated out of you. I enjoy military history and find it interesting, and the short story/article format gives you some interesting historical detail without turning into a history book. One of the stories in the book which really moved me was the description of a Marine whose unit had just suffered heavy casualties holding tight to the unit's dog and just sobbing. We got our own dog during a time of crisis in our family, and I have cried my heart out while hugging him more than once. I think this is a universal theme of our relationship with dogs and it really spoke to me.If you finish the book and still want more, or want to check out a sample of the author's work, she has a Facebook page I have started following, Rebecca's War Dog of the Week. If this book left you wanting more insight into the human and canine heart, the Fiction book The Suspect by Crais is a good one.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. "exceptionally interesting and surprisingly moving" By RF Wozniak I think Jonathan Yardley of the Washington Post put it best when he described Frankel's book as "exceptionally interesting and surprisingly moving." I couldn't agree more. A fantastic look at human and animal relationships as they play out and evolve on an individual basis and in the context of warfare. As someone who has difficulty finding time to read, I could not put this down. Frankel combines history, present-day journalism and emotional storytelling to create a tremendously compelling book. I highly recommend this book and will be looking out for more work by Rebecca Frankel in the future!
