For readers of Unbroken comes an unforgettable tale of courage from America’s “forgotten war” in Korea, by the New York Times bestselling author of A Higher Call. Devotion tells the inspirational story of the U.S. Navy’s most famous aviator duo, Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, and the Marines they fought to defend. A white New Englander from the country-club scene, Tom passed up Harvard to fly fighters for his country. An African American sharecropper’s son from Mississippi, Jesse became the navy’s first black carrier pilot, defending a nation that wouldn’t even serve him in a bar. While much of America remained divided by segregation, Jesse and Tom joined forces as wingmen in Fighter Squadron 32. Adam Makos takes us into the cockpit as these bold young aviators cut their teeth at the world’s most dangerous job—landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier—a line of work that Jesse’s young wife, Daisy, struggles to accept. Deployed to the Mediterranean, Tom and Jesse meet the Fleet Marines, boys like PFC “Red” Parkinson, a farm kid from the Catskills. In between war games in the sun, the young men revel on the Riviera, partying with millionaires and even befriending the Hollywood starlet Elizabeth Taylor. Then comes the war no one expected, in faraway Korea. Devotion takes us soaring overhead with Tom and Jesse, and into the foxholes with Red and the Marines as they battle a North Korean invasion. As the fury of the fighting escalates and the Marines are cornered at the Chosin Reservoir, Tom and Jesse fly, guns blazing, to try and save them. When one of the duo is shot down behind enemy lines and pinned in his burning plane, the other faces an unthinkable choice: watch his friend die or attempt history’s most audacious one-man rescue mission. A tug-at-the-heartstrings tale of bravery and selflessness, Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend?Praise for Devotion“Riveting . . . a meticulously researched and moving account.”—USA Today “An inspiring tale . . . portrayed by Makos in sharp, fact-filled prose and with strong reporting.”—Los Angeles Times “[A] must-read.”—New York Post “Stirring.”—Parade “A masterful storyteller . . . Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter 1Ghosts and ShadowsDecember 4, 1950North Korea, during the first year of the Korean WarIn a black-blue flash, a Corsair fighter burst around the valley’s edge, turning hard, just above the snow. The engine snarled. The canopy glimmered. A bomb hung from the plane’s belly and rockets from its wings.Another roar shook the valley and the next Corsair blasted around the edge. Then came a third, a fourth, a fifth, and more until ten planes had fallen in line. The Corsairs dropped low over a snow-packed road and followed it across the valley, between snow-capped hills and strands of dead trees. The land was enemy territory, the planes were behind the lines. From the cockpit of the fourth Corsair, Lieutenant Tom Hudner reached forward to a bank of switches above the instrument panel. With a flick, he armed his eight rockets.Tom was twenty-six and a navy carrier pilot. His white helmet and raised goggles framed the face of a movie star—flat eyebrows over ice-blue eyes, a chiseled nose, and a cleft chin. He dressed the part too, in a dark brown leather jacket with a reddish fur collar. But Tom could never cut it as a star of the silver screen—his eyes were far too humble. At 250 miles per hour, Tom chased the plane ahead of him. It was nearly 3 p.m., and dark snow clouds draped the sky with cracks of sun slanting through. Tom glanced from side to side and checked his wingtips as the treetops whipped by. Beyond the hills to the right lay a frozen man-made lake called the Chosin Reservoir. The flight was following the road up the reservoir’s western side. The radio crackled and Tom’s eyes perked up. “This is Iroquois Flight 13,” the flight leader announced from the front. “All quiet, so far.”“Copy that, Iroquois Flight,” replied a tired voice. Seven miles away, at the foot of the reservoir, a Marine air controller was shivering in his tent at a ramshackle American base. His maps revealed a dire situation around him. Red lines encircled the base—red, enemy lines. To top it off, it was one of the coldest winters on record. And the war was still new.***The engine droned, filling Tom’s cockpit with the smell of warm oil. Tom edged forward in his seat and looked past the whirling propeller. His eyes settled on the Corsair in front of him.In the plane ahead, a pilot with deep brown skin peered through the rings of his gunsight. The man’s face was slender beneath his helmet, his eyebrows angled over honest dark eyes. Just twenty-four, Ensign Jesse Brown was the first African American carrier pilot in the U.S. Navy. Jesse had more flight time than Tom, so in the air, he led.Jesse dipped his right wing for a better view of the neighboring trees. Tom’s gut tensed.“See something, Jesse?” Tom radioed.Jesse snapped his plane level again. “Not a thing.”Through the canopy’s scratched Plexiglas, Tom watched the cold strands blur past at eye level. The enemy was undoubtedly there, tucked behind trees, grasping rifles, holding their fire so the planes would pass.Tom clenched his jaw and focused his eyes forward. As tempting as it was, the pilots couldn’t strafe a grove of trees on a hunch. They needed to spot the enemy first. The enemy were the White Jackets, Communist troops who hid by day and attacked by night. For the previous week, their human waves had lapped against the American base night after night, nearly overrunning the defenses. Nearly a hundred thousand White Jackets were now laying siege to the base and more were arriving and moving into position.Against this foe stood the base’s ten thousand men—some U.S. Army soldiers, some British Commandos, but mostly U.S. Marines. Reportedly, the base even had its cooks, drivers, and clerks manning the battle lines at night, freezing alongside the riflemen.Their survival now hinged on air power and the Corsair pilots knew it. Every White Jacket they could neutralize now would be one fewer trying to bayonet a young Marine that night.“Heads up, disturbances ahead!” the flight leader radioed. Finally, something, Tom thought.Tom’s eyes narrowed. Small boulders dotted the snow beside the road.“Watch the rocks!” Jesse said as he zipped over them.“Roger,” Tom replied.Tom wrapped his index finger over the trigger of the control stick. His eyes locked on the roadside boulders. When caught in the open, White Jackets would sometimes drop to the ground and curl over their knees. From above, their soiled uniforms looked like stone and the side flaps of their caps hid their faces. The rock pile slipped behind Tom’s wings. He glanced into his rearview mirror. Behind his tail flew a string of six Corsairs with whirling, yellow-tipped propellers. If any rocks stood now to take a shot, Tom’s buddies would deal with them. Tom trusted the men behind him, just as Jesse entrusted his life to Tom.After two months of flying combat together, Tom and Jesse were as close as brothers, although they hailed from different worlds. A sharecropper’s son, Jesse had grown up dirt poor, farming the fields of Mississippi, whereas Tom had spent his summers boating at a country club in Massachusetts as an heir to a chain of grocery stores. In 1950 their friendship was genuine, just ahead of the times.Tom caught the green blur of a vehicle beneath his left wing. Then another on the right. He leaned from side to side for a better view.Abandoned American trucks and jeeps lined the roadsides. Some sat on flat tires and others nosed into ditches. Snow draped the vehicles; their ripped canvas tops flapped in the wind. Cannons jutted here and there, their barrels wrapped in ice.Tom’s eyes narrowed. Splashes of pink colored the surrounding snow. “Oh Lord,” he muttered. The day before, the Marines had been attacked here as they fought their way back to the base. In subzero conditions, spilled blood turned pink.“Bodies, nine o’clock!” the flight leader announced as he flew past a hill on the left. “God, they’re everywhere!”Jesse zipped by in silence. Tom nudged his control stick to the left and his fifteen-thousand-pound fighter dipped a wing.Sun warmed the hillside, revealing bodies stacked like sandbags across the slope. Mounds of dead men poked from the snow, their frozen blue arms reaching defiantly. Tom’s eyes tracked the carnage as he flew past. Are they ours or theirs? he wondered.Just the day before, he had flown over and seen the Marines down there, waving up at him, their teenage faces pale and waxy. He had heard rumors of the horrors they faced after nightfall. That’s when the temperature dropped to twenty below, when the enemy charged in waves, when the Americans’ weapons froze and they fought with bayonets and fists.Aboard the aircraft carrier, Tom and the other pilots had become accustomed to starting each morning with the same question: “Did our boys survive the night?”With a deep growl, the flight—now just six Corsairs—burst into a new valley northwest of the reservoir.Frustration lined Tom’s face. The enemy had remained elusive so the flight leader had dispatched the rearmost four Corsairs to search elsewhere. The remaining six planes followed the road farther into hostile territory. The clouds ahead became stormier, as if the road were luring the pilots into Siberia itself.Tom scanned for signs of life as the flight raced between frozen fields. Snow-covered haystacks slipped past his wings. Crumbling shacks. Trees swaying in the wind.“Possible footprints!” Jesse announced. Tom glanced eagerly forward.“Nope, just shadows,” Jesse muttered as he flew overhead.Tom could tell that Jesse was frustrated too. They both should have been far from this winter wasteland. Tom should have been sipping a scotch in a warm country club back home and Jesse should have been bouncing his baby daughter on his lap under a Mississippi sun. Instead, they’d both come here as volunteers. It wasn’t the risk that bothered them—they were frustrated because they wanted to do something, anything, to defend the boys at the base. The night before, Jesse had written to his wife, Daisy, from the carrier: “Knowing that he’s helping those poor guys on the ground, I think every pilot on here would fly until he dropped in his tracks.”Ahead of the flight, a voice barked a command from a roadside field. A dozen or more rifles and submachine guns rose up from the snow. Numb fingers gripped the weapons and shaking arms aimed skyward—arms wrapped in white quilted uniforms. The White Jackets. They had heard the planes coming and taken cover. The shadow of the first Corsair passed overhead—yet the enemy troops held their fire. The second shadow zipped safely past, too. The shadow of Jesse’s Corsair next raced toward the spot where weapons stood like garden stakes. As Jesse’s shadow stretched over the hidden soldiers, the voice shouted. The rifles and submachine guns fired a volley, sending bullets rocketing upward. Quickly, the weapons lowered back into the snow. The shadow of Tom’s plane flew over the enemy next, then two more Corsair shadows in quick succession. Over the roar of their 2,250-horsepower engines, none of the pilots heard the gunshots. One would later remember seeing the disturbance in the snow, but at 250 miles per hour, no one saw the enemy.Rather than patrol another desolate valley, the flight leader climbed into an orbit over the surrounding mountains and ordered the flight to reform.Tom pulled alongside Jesse’s right wing and together they climbed toward the others.“This is Iroquois Flight 13,” the leader radioed the base. “Road recon came up dry. Got anything else?”“Copy,” the Marine controller replied. “Let me check.”Tom and Jesse tucked in behind the leader and his wingman. The trailing two Corsairs slipped in behind them. From the rear of the formation, a pilot named Koenig radioed with alarm. “Jesse, something’s wrong—looks like you’re bleeding fuel!”Jesse squirmed in his seat to see behind his tail, but his range of vision ended at his seatback. He looked to Tom across the cold space between their planes.

This is a well-written and completely engrossing story about friendship and adversity. The book is a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that previous generations endured for the benefit of those who enjoy our freedoms today. I wouldn't be surprised if this deservingly becomes a hit movie; regardless, if you enjoy amazing history, then give this amazing book a try. This outstanding work comes highly recommended!UPDATE: This is the first time I have ever come back to update a review on book. Why on earth would I do that? Well, the book has stuck with me. I think of it daily; that seems crazy, but that is the case. I think of the sacrifices that these guys in the book made (especially what the Marines went through in those beyond horrible conditions in Korea), and I think of the men and women throughout our military that continue to make sacrifices in many ways that allows the US to still be the best country in the world. There are sections in the book that literally drove me to tears, which is fairly unusual for my personality. A great book really imparts a sense of learning and understanding, and this book accomplished that many times over. I also happen to be a writer (with zero association of the writer of this book or the publisher), but I can honestly state that if you only buy and read ONE book this year, make it this one. It is that good, it is that amazing, and it is that important, at least in my opinion.

Devotion goes far beyond names, dates and places, and gives us precious glimpses into a tense time and the people who lived it By ARH I was engaged in finishing a fine book of historical fiction set during the closing months of the American Civil War when "Devotion" appeared in my mail box. It sat on my book shelf unopened for at least another 10 days before I finished the other book and finally had a chance to crack the cover of this one. If I had known what I was in for by reading this book I would have dropped the other one mid-way through and devoured this one! The other book was very good and commendable, but this one will, I hope be on everyone's fall reading list."Devotion" is non-fiction, based on events that occurred mainly during the early days of the Korean War, a conflict largely overlooked by most Americans, most of whom know it solely through their experiences with the TV comedy M*A*S*H*It is obvious that Makos and his team did a splendid job of researching the story lines included in this book. The central story though involves the first African American naval aviator, Jesse Brown. Military history buffs know about the WWII all-African American fighter pilots known as the Red Tails, but Ensign Jesse Brown, a graduate of Ohio State University and devoted husband and father was the first African American to qualify as a carrier pilot. This was in 1950 - an America of segregation and Jim Crow laws. Amidst this background Jesse Brown, a man born in extremely humble circumstances in Mississippi, crossed paths with Thomas Hudner, Jr., a white pilot born into the world of wealth and privilege, and graduate of the US Naval Academy. This is their story, but it is much more than that. Makos weaves their experiences into experiences of several other US Military personnel fighting in Korea, mainly marines who were the target of the Chinese army that crossed into N Korea in an effort to eradicate US Military forces.I won't tell you any more than this, but this is IMO a literary, historical,. and personal work that should be read by everyone. I will recommend it to all my friends. I seldom do this, but this book is worth it. It is on par with other recent excellent books such as "Unbroken" and "Boys in the Boat." It goes far beyond names, dates and places. and gives us precious glimpses into a particularly tense time and the people who lived them.5+ Stars

I did know, however, that the Battle of Chosin in late 1950 was one of the most savage battles in American history. It is during this battle that, according to the captain of the USS Leyte, "no finer act of unselfish heroism in military history" took place. In Devotion, author Adam Makos tells the story of naval aviators Tom Hudner and Jesse Brown. The unlikely duo - Hudner was a New England prep school and Naval Academy graduate while Brown struggled against racism to become the first African American carrier pilot - were wingmen in Fighter Squadron 32 aboard the USS Leyte. But more than that, they were friends and when Brown is shot down behind enemy lines, Hudner has to decide how much can safely be risked in an attempt to save him.Makos is a gifted writer and tells in riveting fashion the story of these two men and the incident that will forever link their names. He has done extensive research into the battle as well as the backgrounds of Hudner and Brown and uses first hand accounts to keep the book authentic without being too academic. In the book's introduction, Makos states that his goal is for readers to not just read Devotion but to "experience" it, and he accomplishes just that.Devotion is a book you should experience and one that puts a human face on a war that many in our nation have forgotten.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By Nick Berte Hemodynamic Monitoring, Evolving Technologies and Clinical Practice by Mary E. Lough provides an in-depth review of the current state of hemodynamics. This book is dense with information and provides a deeper understanding to even the most versed and experienced practitioner. The content of the book was outstanding and covered many places in hemodynamic monitoring that were previously rarely discussed and difficult to find in other literary sources. This book, however, requires the reader to have at least a moderate foundation in cardiac care and hemodynamics to fully appreciate the complex topics it addresses. The many provided case studies and examples also help to enforce the clinical application of each topic and are included in almost every chapter. Overall I love the book and have referenced it many times in actual clinical practice. It is appropriate for any health care practitioner that wants to gain a much deeper understanding of the holistic picture surrounding hemodynamics and hemodynamic monitoring.Throughout the book the reader finds a vast amount of helpful visual aids and graphics that provide written and visual modeling of the complex systems and processes associated with hemodynamics. Visual aids are also included that look at many of the devices currently in use for hemodynamic modeling and how they obtain their information within the body. These visuals were very helpful to understand many of the concepts and were written in a user-friendly way that displayed all useful data and the processes clearly. The combination of visual and written education was perfect for conceptualizing the many multifaceted processes, monitoring tools, and pathophysiology. I have not seen a book on the market at this time that addresses the breadth of content in as deep of detail and clarity as this book.

This book articulates an original scheme for the conceptualization of action. Beginning with a new approach to the individuation of acts, it delineates the relationships between basic and non-basic acts and uses these relationships in the definition of ability and intentional action. The author exhibits the central role of wants and beliefs in the causation of acts and in the analysis of the concept of action.

Professor Goldman suggests answers to fundamental questions about acts, and develops a set of ideas and principles that can be used in the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of language, ethics, and other fields, including the behavioral sciences.

Earth Beings is the fruit of Marisol de la Cadena's decade-long conversations with Mariano and Nazario Turpo, father and son, runakuna or Quechua people. Concerned with the mutual entanglements of indigenous and nonindigenous worlds, and the partial connections between them, de la Cadena presents how the Turpos' indigenous ways of knowing and being include and exceed modern and nonmodern practices. Her discussion of indigenous political strategies—a realm that need not abide by binary logics—reconfigures how to think about and question modern politics, while pushing her readers to think beyond "hybridity" and toward translation, communication that accepts incommensurability, and mutual difference as conditions for ethnography to work.

Earth Beings: Ecologies of Practice across Andean Worlds (The Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures), by Marisol de la Cadena

Review "In response to its own subject, this is an extraordinary intervention in ethnography. Marisol de la Cadena writes not across genres—different perspectives on one entity—but in a way that allows different entities to emerge, and they're not 'genres' at all. Diverse narratives, conversations, and recollections can be read simultaneously as scholarly tools and as making present realities they can hardly contain. A highly courageous and, in personal terms, deeply moving book."  (Marilyn Strathern, Cambridge University)"Earth Beings is one of those books that emerge into the scholarly domain once in a decade that crystallizes that decade's debates and rearticulates them in ways that open paths into new worlds." (Arturo Escobar, author of Territories of Difference: Place, Movements, Life, Redes)"It matters which stories tell stories. A leader in rethinking the partial connections and excessive entanglements of state and indigenous worlds in the Andes and beyond, Marisol de la Cadena writes stories that make this simple aphorism lively indeed. It matters which stories normalize other stories and which build the power in recursive retellings and reworkings to gnaw at the established order of things in vexed worlds. Especially when material stories are also told by earth others, exacting their reciprocal consequences on both state and indigenous human actors, what is at stake is not cultural diversity or epistemological relativism, but something much closer to worlding, to composing and decomposing some worlds and not others with unexpected partners. Earth Beings helps me rethink these matters through the churning of a mountain."  (Donna J. Haraway, author of When Species Meet)

About the Author Marisol de la Cadena is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis, and the author of Indigenous Mestizos: The Politics of Race and Culture in Cuzco, Peru, 1919–1991, also published by Duke University Press.

Church growth experts tell us how to make our churches bigger, busier, and more competitive. Walt Hoffman suggests that such gains come at the cost of simplicity and intimacy, as churchgoers have no time to sit at Jesus’s feet and listen. Noted author Richard J. Foster put it this way: “To be spent in the cause of Christ is a very different reality from the frenzied activity of the modern church.” What a far cry from what Christ intended for his people. Church should be meaningful, nurturing . . . and, yes, even fun! It began in Southern California back in the 1970s, when Walt Hoffman, the busy CEO of an electrical construction company, introduced a troubled young man, Floyd, to Christ. A couple of years later, Floyd asked Walt to teach a small Bible study meeting on Monday nights. Walt loved Scripture, so he agreed. What happened still astonishes Walt, Floyd, and the other attendees. Their numbers multiplied. Many committed their lives to Christ. The participants gave themselves to a methodical, expository study of the Word of God. Verse by verse, what it said is what they did. Later, they recognized that their fellowship had become a church. They called it Monday Night, and its influence is still felt today in all parts of the world. ... And Church Happened is a true story of the joy of simple church life. This particular church can’t be copied, and it may never be repeated. Yet there is something to be learned for us today. Examine the biblical pattern for unsophisticated church life, and know that it can happen again.

And Church Happened, by Walter Hoffman

Review "Cleverly disguised beneath an engaging story of a church that emerged from the 70s subculture, . . . And Church Happened provides a remarkable challenge for anyone who is involved in Jesus’ church today. Walt Hoffman has a unique capacity to challenge unexamined actions through the Scriptures, balanced by a gracious tone that really desires his reader to learn and grow. For the modern church attender, Walt cleverly drives us back to the issue of why? Why does your church exist? Why do you go to church? Why do you meet together? Why do you call it “worship”? Why do you support missionaries? Don’t be fooled by the story of a small church. My ministry has led me to a larger church, where everything I learned at Monday Night can be applied. More importantly, everything I learned there, I am still seeking to apply personally."  -Matt Hannan Senior Pastor, New Heights Church, Vancouver, WA "Walt Hoffman’s writing is so captivating and inspiring, it brought tears to my eyes. The story he tells is nothing short of miraculous: Jesus really can be the Head of the local church. The year I spent with Monday Night Bible Study was the most precious and formative year of my Christian life. I was blown away on my very first visit by the transparency, the love, and the acceptance my fellow believers there showed me. And until I read this book, I hadn't realized how much Walt and Pat's approach to being a Christ follower has influenced my own pastorate . . . for thirty-three years now! What a testimony that the Holy Spirit is still able to move among His people today―as long as we let Him! -Alex Ohlsen Lead Pastor, Renton Christian Center "Surveys show church attendance and Bible engagement on decline among millennials. Why the decline? Why the disinterest? Did a church consumer mentality lead to this? Walt Hoffman’s book provides insights on these questions and more. The mood among youths in the 70s was disfranchisement with the mainline church. They needed a more genuine faith and experience, and they found these things simply through meeting in homes, being together, and caring about the Word. This book is not so much a history as it is a reflection on what makes church happen―in any age. And it’s timely for this age."  -Gilles Gravelle, PhD Author of The Age of Global Giving "...And Church Happened did happen . . . to me! Walt Hoffman tells the rich story of how quite a cast of characters devoted to teaching, fellowship, and prayer became a church. In these pages, all readers will find inspiration to center church life on the gifts of simplicity, God’s Word, and loving one another." -Dawn Ohlendorf Braithwaite, PhD Willa Cather Professor and Chairperson of Communication Studies, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

About the Author Walter A. Hoffman graduated from UCLA and worked as a business professional and CEO for many years, while serving as pastor of the Bible study that became a church called Monday Night. Hoffman later became associate pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles, Oregon. He and his wife, Pearl, performed many short-term missionary outreaches. They now live in Kona, Hawaii, and are parents of four grown sons.

I was a member of MNBS so enjoyed the book immensely By DOB Walt Hoffman’s book chronicles the story of The Monday Night Bible Study, starting with the conversion of a troubled teen and growing from home-based Bible studies and fellowship, to larger halls attended by mostly college-aged people. The book tells the story of one of many such churches that sprung up in the 1970s, many starting at a time when organized religion did not well meet the needs of young people. Electrical engineer Hoffman chronicles the desires of the group not to become a church, and describes how, through time and study, they came to realize God had called them as a church. Hoffman describes leading the group through a study of worship and describes their process of becoming and doing church, based on the Biblical pattern of early churches most closely. Being part of Monday Night Bible Study was a joyful experience of close supportive fellowship, solid teaching, and prayer. I was a member of MNBS and I enjoyed the book immensely. However, this is much more than a biography of one group’s experience; rather Hoffman teaches and challenges readers about what church can be—it is not buildings, programs, committees, officers, organized music—but rather about a gathering of those called to fellowship, teaching, prayer, using their gifts in service of others, and joy in a relationship with God and a group of committed caring people. Readers will come away with a clearer understanding of their own church life, fellowship experiences, and desires.

Smith God started so many churches, in a very similar ways, during the 1970's. This book warmly, and intimately, reminds me of how "church happened" back then. I was part of a small campus Bible Study in Columbus, Ohio. It was a small group of about 70, that grew in very similar ways to the Monday Night Church, as described in this book. Eventually, it became a church of about 3,500. Later, I was also part of another that started as two small Bible Studies in the early 70's and is 7,000 today. There were quite a few churches around the country with similar stories. At 89 years of age, Mr. Hoffman does a great job writing his memoirs about how church actually happened in Southern California. It's a great read. All about how God started with a very small group, And Church Happened...in California, and all around the country, during the 1970's.

I had the privilege of being "one of those Monday Night Bible Study kids" for many years. Found Christ, met and married my husband, made lasting friends and learned firsthand what it meant to find community with other believers in the Body of Christ. It was here that Jesus became real to me...through the examples of the other "kids", special adults and, of course, Pat and Walt Hoffman, who opened their hearts and home and treated us as their own. These were full years and years where many of us were able to discover the foundation upon which to build our lives as we grew into adulthood. This story, this book is a memoir of those wonderful years, but even more it is a testimony to how God works through and for His children to knit us together as a family. Walt Hoffman has and continues to see where God is working and then he pours his life into that work...but in my heart I shall always believe that Walt Hoffman was especially made for such a time as this...when church just happened!

DON’T BE FOOLED! None of us likes to think we are, but it is happening more than we may realize. So how can we minimize it? By asking questions – the right sort of questions – and checking out the answers for ourselves. Remember the majority are not always right – especially if they’ve been fooled. This is a book for the whole family – for all ages. It can be used in many ways, with the discovery of new thought-provoking details each time you dig into its contents. The book is controversial – like so many issues in life. It’s a bit prickly you could say! The way you handle or receive the pricks will greatly infl uence the future of your lifestyle. It’s about choices and decisions. Will they be made by you, or for you? It’s about how you may have to transfer from one prick to another, for they are poles apart. For some it involves sticking your arm out. For others it involves sticking your neck out. You either get into the fl ow, or you get out of the rip-off. You either take the generally accepted “safe” road, or you choose to travel the less popular path usually associated with those who are deemed to be different. As the pages unfold you will move from a taught-us Turtle, to a Wiley Fox, and a Weasel Speak. You read stories and are confronted with facts you haven’t been told about, that should make your blood boil. And somewhere in this book, every reader will fi nd themselves – maybe in several places! Be careful though, you might be wearing different hats, but it’s what you come out with in the end, that really counts!

Inject the Truth By fiona lynch An excellent reference book for anyone who wants to make an informed decision, for their child or for themselves, before vaccinating. The bibliographies and sources are well placed, at the foot of each page, allowing the reader quick reference. The information is up to date and very disturbing, as you may not read the information or be provided this in depth information by health practitioners, who may not have this knowledge themselves. For me, this begs the question,'how can anyone vaccinate someone's child or an adult, without discussing the truth about the vaccine first?' This is probably one of the most in depth books I have ever read.

The proposed book investigates brain asymmetry from the perspective of functional neural systems theory, a foundational approach for the topic. There is currently no such book available on the market and there is a need for a neuroscience book, with a focus on the functional asymmetry of these two integrated and dynamic brains using historical and modern clinical and experimental research findings with the field. The book provides evidence from multiple methodologies, including clinical lesion studies, brain stimulation, and modern imaging techniques. The author has successfully used the book in doctoral and advances undergraduate courses on neuroscience and neuropsychology.  It has also been used to teach a course on the biological basis of behavior and could be used in a variety of contexts and courses.

From the Back Cover

Brain asymmetry has seldom been the primary underlying focus of books written within the neurosciences or in clinical neuropsychology. As such, this author finds no available text on brain asymmetry based on functional neural systems theory, which is foundational for the entire field. There remains a distinct need for a neuroscience book with a focus on the functional asymmetry of these two integrated and dynamic brains using historical and modern clinical and experimental research findings within the field.

This book provides evidence from multiple methodologies, including clinical lesion studies, brain stimulation, and modern imaging techniques.  The references span across the history of neuroscience.  However, the writings are strongly supported by recent references from within the field. This book has been used successfully in the author's doctoral level and advanced undergraduate level classes on neuroscience and neuropsychology.

In History’s People internationally acclaimed historian Margaret MacMillan gives her own personal selection of figures of the past, women and men, some famous and some little-known, who stand out for her. Some have changed the course of history and even directed the currents of their times. Others are memorable for being risk-takers, adventurers, or observers. She looks at the concept of leadership through Bismarck and the unification of Germany; William Lyon MacKenzie King and the preservation of the Canadian Federation; Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the bringing of a unified United States into the Second World War. She also notes how leaders can make huge and often destructive mistakes, as in the cases of Hitler, Stalin, and Thatcher. Richard Nixon and Samuel de Champlain are examples of daring risk-takers who stubbornly went their own ways, often in defiance of their own societies. Then there are the dreamers, explorers, and adventurers, individuals like Fanny Parkes and Elizabeth Simcoe who manage to defy or ignore the constraints of their own societies. Finally, there are the observers, such as Babur, the first Mughal emperor of India, and Victor Klemperer, a Holocaust survivor, who kept the notes and diaries that bring the past to life.

Review "MacMillan deftly and engagingly shows that history is a process of capturing the minutiae of life as much as time’s epic strokes." -- Publishers Weekly, Starred Review."A concise, educational overview of some of the men and women who have carved out spots in the annals of history and why they should be remembered. Fans of the author are in for another treat." -- Kirkus"Avoiding arid timelines, MacMillan, an Oxford professor, instead provides intimate human encounters. She seems to love sifting through the revealing details. 'I want to gossip,' she confesses — and so do we." -- The New York Times

A Delicious Invitation to the Study of History By Peter Mendrela “If history is…a feast”, as Margaret MacMillan puts it, “the savour comes from its people”. Indeed, MacMillan’s “People” should be a required “dish” for anyone interested in the study of history not only because of the fascinating personalities she discusses, but because of the way she does it.In short, her writing is lucid, engaging, and scholarly without being elitist or conceding. Much ink has been spilt discussing Bismarck, FDR, Hitler, Stalin or Thatcher, but rarely has reading about them been so much…fun (this adjective, of course, is not a judgment of their actions). Moreover, apart from these historical giants which she categorizes by their personality traits, Macmillan adds a wonderful homage to the less know figures in Canadian history, intrepid women explorers, and a concluding tribute to select diary keepers who make the study of history not only more interesting, but often possible. One final note. No, MacMillan does not deny the importance of larger political, economic, or social forces which, as it were, “make” history, but she suggests that it is the specific personalities of the aforementioned people that resulted in their seizing power and inflicting such powerful historical shifts we live (and grapple with) even today. This is history par excellence from an excellent historian and a writer.

Chatty, Accessible and Captivating By George Poirier This book’s focus is on various people from history – mostly of the past couple of centuries but some from much earlier. The book has five chapters, each of which centers on a particular human characteristic. The lives of some key people in history who have demonstrated this particular trait are examined – some quite extensively while others rather briefly. The people that are discussed include politicians, explorers, monarchs, dictators as well as others; many are ordinary people who have made a difference in the world or who have simply left a useful written record of parts of their lives and times.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, I did find one sentence to be rather misleading at best. The author states (page 3) “If Albert Einstein had not grasped the nature of the atom early in the twentieth century, could the allies have developed the atomic bomb during the Second World War?” As far as I know, Einstein did not decipher any properties of the atom that could have led to the atomic bomb. That was the work mainly of Rutherford and Bohr and, later, Hahn, Strassman, Meitner, Frisch, Fermi and others. Einstein’s early twentieth century work focused on space and time (relativity), Brownian motion, mass-energy equivalence and the photoelectric effect; nothing about atomic structure or nuclear energy or anything that could have led to the atomic bomb.As indicated, the author’s prose is very chatty, friendly and accessible. It appears to have been written for the interested general reader and so is without the usual jargon that one often finds in more formal works. This book should be of interest to those who have anywhere from a casual to a passionate interest in history and want to read about some of its people – well-known and lesser-known - through a relaxed and friendly prose.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An exceptional read. By Cloggie Downunder “Our understanding and enjoyment of the past would be impoverished without its individuals, even though we know history’s currents – its underlying forces and shifts, whether of technology or political structures or social values – must never be ignored”History’s People: Personalities and the Past is the eleventh book by Canadian author and historian, Margaret MacMillan, and comprises the 2015 Massey Lectures. As well as a general commentary on the people that make and record history, MacMillan focusses on certain individuals, examining their role in history. Readers may be intrigued to find that MacMillan groups together Woodrow Wilson, Margaret Thatcher, Stalin and Hitler under a common banner, analysing their leadership successes and failures.MacMillan looks at people who took advantage of favourable circumstances, people who made their own beneficial circumstances, people with a knack for judging when the time was right, people who achieved by virtue of believing in themselves and their cause, and people who recorded events around them. Leaders, pioneers, explorers, entrepreneurs and meticulous diarists all feature.MacMillan tells us: “…we should never forget that the people of the past were as human as we are….we recognize in the people of the past familiar characteristics; they too had ambitions and fears, loves and hates…” and also that “Women have been some of the great adventurers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, perhaps because they were tempered and toughened by overcoming the obstacles society placed in the way of their sex”In her final chapter, we are told: “It is the interplay between individuals and their worlds that makes history and brings it to life for those of us in the present”. People who have an interest in modern history will enjoy this outstanding and very comprehensive collection of lectures. MacMillan includes a 17-page index and, for readers whose interest is piqued by a particular character, an 18-page section on sources and further reading. An exceptional read.3.5 stars
