Discover: How to Lower you Blood Sugar without Medication using Natural Remedies

Diabetes is a common ailment today; one that affects millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, most people feel doomed when diagnosed with this condition as the treatment recommended is harsh and controlling. The American Diabetes Association (2013) in its guidelines advises to rely on a number of prescription drugs to control the disease – which is ONE way to check diabetes Type-2; perhaps, not the best and definitely not the only one.

Benefits of Treating Diabetes Naturally

Prescription drugs are more often than not aids to control symptoms rather than a cure. While it is true that Type-2 diabetes does not have a cure, it has been proved beyond doubt – though not yet through scientific research – that natural remedies can control much better and bring it to a state where no medication is required. Research studies do show that diabetes responds best to a diet and lifestyle adaptation. The term “adaptation” is used because “change” often sounds too scary and alienates people from considering it. Diet and lifestyle adaptation need not be scary, bothersome or infringing on happiness. It’s just an adaptation; and the adaptation would not only control diabetes, but also bring along many other health benefits such as better heart health, better weight management, better nutrition input and better ways to make exercise a part of daily routine. The natural way is not only the easiest and least stressful, but also the best way to bring this ailment under control for life. Research studies have shown that dependency on biochemical drugs is more harm than help when it is relied upon over a prolonged period. Diabetes is indeed a disorder that can be totally and whole controlled naturally. This eBook will show you how – step by step.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Book For Beginners By Autumn This is a very informative book. It starts out by telling how and why essential oils came to be in the different countries all over the world, which is something I haven't seen in other books. It told how they are made and how to determine the quality of essential oils that you buy and how to use your oils and store them safely as well. There is also a chapter listing in depth the most popular essential oils and their uses. There are also chapters on beauty and aromatherapy and the best essential oils to use for those. There were also essential oil blends that you can make for many different ailments. I know I will definitely be mixing a few of those for myself soon. This is a great book for beginners.

This book goes through how certain civilizations used it through out time, how they're made, and then details what a lot of the oils are. (Who knew Geranium Oil was a deodorant?) This book details a lot of the ways the oils help and I feel I have a better understanding of the topic in general!

It's great for beginners, which is definitely how I would classify myself. It's very well written and easy to understand. Highly recommended for people who are just getting started with essential oils.

His name in American politics is more cited than any other president. Both the Republican and Democratic parties are radically different today, mainly as a result of Ronald Reagan and the force of his ideas. No twentieth century president shaped the American political landscape so profoundly. Craig Shirley's Last Act is the important final chapter in the life of Reagan that no one has thus far covered. It's the kind of book that widens our understanding of American history and of the presidency and the men who occupied it. To tell Reagan's story, Craig has secured the complete, exclusive, and enthusiastic support of the Reagan Foundation and Library and spent considerable time there reviewing sealed files and confidential information. Cast in a grand and compelling narrative style, Last Act contains interesting and heretofore untold anecdotes about Reagan, Mrs. Reagan, their pleasure at retirement, the onslaught of the awful Alzheimer's and how he and Mrs. Reagan dealt with the diagnosis, the slow demise, the extensive plans for a state funeral, the outpouring from the nation, which stunned the political establishment, the Reagan legacy, and how his shadow looms more and more over the Republican Party, Washington, the culture of America, and the world.

Last Act: The Final Years and Emerging Legacy of Ronald Reagan, by Craig Shirley

Review "Stunning insights into the enduring legacy of our last anti-Establishment president. Kudos to Craig Shirley for this great book!"--Laura Ingraham, Lifezette"Craig Shirley skillfully weaves in key events from the President's life and their indelible impact on people and history. He masterfully captures each moment and event. The truly wonderful and enduring contribution of Last Act is its message of hope and optimism."--Ben Elliott, Director of White House Speechwriting, 1983-1986"Like its subject, the book is a class act. Shirley is especially good in his clear writing style and no-nonsense storytelling. There are thousands of anecdotes and scores of witticisms."--The American Conservative"It's that sunset journey of Ronald Reagan that Mr. Shirley, author of two well-received books on Ronald Reagan, traces in clean and forceful prose..."--Washington Times"No historian has done a better job of chronicling Ronald Reagan's rise to power than Craig Shirley. However, Shirley's latest book is the first book to focus on Reagan's post-presidential life and demonstrates that his importance extended far beyond the eight years he held America's highest elective office."--Breitbart"Craig Shirley's Last Act is the quintessential guide for remembering President Reagan as we should, with respect to the facts and honor to the service of one of America's greatest political leaders... Last Act gives us the Reagan model for measuring a president's place in history." --Townhall"Craig Shirley's masterful storytelling and attention to detail immediately bring the reader to the Gipper's bedside at Rancho del Cielo. The reader is lulled into a sense of actually being among the Reagans... Shirley carefully straddles the grey area between storyteller, biographer and historian to produce a volume that chronicles the legacy, the legend and the man himself."--Conservative Review"The long time Reagan biographer has written a superb book that tells of the last days of the president millions of Americans had come to love and admire... The story Shirley unfolds...is detailed, colorful, and summons the emotions. For the Reagan fans out there, Last Act is a must -- and a much needed reminder that yes, once upon a time America had a president who really did 'make America great again.'"--American Spectator"Shirley makes meticulous notation of the duty-driven world upon the death of Ronald Reagan, yet all the information is not overwhelming. You listen, tear up a little, remembering Reagan, and then you look at the world now and, using his optimism, believe we can again experience the unparalleled strength of conviction that turned our upside-down world, right side up."--Conservative Review"Shirley presents a narrative about Reagan's heart-breaking descent into Alzheimer's disease and the national mourning that took place after his death. Shirley is the Sherlock Holmes of Reagan historians. His research is exhaustive and he delivers great nuggets."--L. Brent Bozell III"Craig Shirley's new book on Ronald Reagan, Last Act, chronicles the arc of the rise of Ronald Reagan's post-White House legacy and how public opinion has come to place him among America's best Presidents. All of these Craig Shirley treats in panoramic colors, but it is Shirley's study of the details of the funeral and the care lavished upon the week-long remembrance by Reagan's former staff that adds much to the book... If you want to understand Reagan's legacy and why and how it has grown since his passing, and how the drama of his funeral help frame that legacy, I urge you to read this book."--ConservativeHQ"Premier Reagan historian Craig Shirley...uses the formerly unexamined post-presidential years of Reagan, and especially the national outpouring of grief and respect in the week between his death and funeral, as a window into what made the man and his presidency special."--Quin Hillyer

From the Back Cover PRAISE FOR LASTACT"In this affectionate and often moving book, Craig Shirley has given us a remarkable account of Ronald Reagan's 'long goodbye,' chronicling the final years of an American original who bent history in the service of freedom. This is an invaluable book about an invaluable man."--Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Lion"Ronald Reagan may have had a 'Last Act' in this life, but his principles are timeless. Craig Shirley reveals new information about Reagan's last days on earth in a deeply moving book that will bring tears to your eyes, strengthen your political resolve and inspire you to build on his legacy."--Cal Thomas, syndicated columnist"As we consider the next Reagan, here is the last Reagan, whose legacy must serve as a roadmap for the next American comeback."--Monica Crowley, Ph.D.,Fox News political and foreign affairs analyst & Washington Times editor and columnist"Craig Shirley is a walking encyclopedia on all things Ronald Reagan. His latest, Last Act, delves into Reagan's post-presidential life with verve and insight, breaking plenty of new ground. The story of Reagan's battling the curse of Alzheimer's disease is utterly riveting. Highly recommended!"--Doug Brinkley, editor of The Reagan Diaries"With this book, Craig Shirley cements his place as the premier Reagan biographer. As revealing as his earlier volumes on Reagan were, this one is especially fascinating, chock full of new revelations and captivating observations about the former president's twilight years."--Dr. Larry J. Sabato, founder and director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia; author of The Kennedy Half Century"Craig Shirley's Last Act is a worthy successor to his earlier, fine accounts of Ronald Reagan's life and times. The book offers striking insights into Reagan the man--and also into America the country he so loved."--William Kristol, editor, The Weekly Standard"Through never-before revealed interviews and expert analysis, Last Act by Craig Shirley pulls back the curtain on the life, last days, and legacy of Ronald Reagan--an exceptional president who believed in American exceptionalism above all else. Important. Essential. Bravo."--Jane Hampton Cook, author of American Phoenix"In the past, Craig Shirley meticulously documented Reagan's pre-presidential years; now, he meticulously documents Reagan's post-presidential years. His enlightening concept is punctuated by his usual exhaustive research and diligence in interviewing so many of the people who knew Ronald Reagan. And beyond the research is simply a touching story of a great man's final days. Last Act is a look at Ronald Reagan that is well worth your time."--Dr. Paul Kengor, professor of political science at Grove City College"Ronald Reagan's story is so rich and resonant--so profoundly American--that it can only be told, in its full range and complexity, by a biographer of extraordinary dedication to subject and craft. LBJ had Robert Caro; and Ronald Reagan has Craig Shirley. In Last Act, Shirley brings us the final years of a twentieth-century icon, issuing a challenge not just to other Reagan biographers but to the discipline of biography itself."--James Rosen, Fox News Chief Washington Correspondent and author of The Cheney Tapes

27 of 29 people found the following review helpful. It's a good book but falls short of the standard set by Shirley's two previous tomes By Bio Reader Let me make it clear that I an an unabashed Ronald Reagan admirer and consider him one of the greatest Americans in history. My first child was named Reagan in his honor, and I was among the people who jumped on a commercial airplane and flew cross country to stand on the side of Pennsylvania Avenue when the caisson carrying his body drove past. It's a memory that will stay with me to my grave.I also consider Craig Shirley's two previous books, "Rendezvous with Destiny" about the 1980 Reagan Campaign and "Reagan's Revolution" about his 1976 presidential effort against Gerald Ford, to be among my favorite books. Considering I read nothing but political history, that's saying a lot.For the reasons above, I was very much looking forward to the publication of "Last Act" and had it saved in my Amazon wish list for months before it was released. On the day it arrived, I began devouring it, and while it was good, it failed to meet the standard set by Shirley's first two books. It's understandable that "Last Act" does not have the depth of information, detail and insight that the campaign books contained because Shirley had fewer folks to interview and a touchy subject to cover. I would have liked more information about the years when President Reagan disappeared from view and the struggles that his beloved Nancy, his family, and others who knew him dealt with as a result. The fact that this information is understandably protected by a close-knit group is a given, but the book seems to promise more than it can deliver. The information about how Reagan's funeral was pre-planned and carried out offered an interesting view of a grand historical event, and I enjoyed that portion very much. Likewise, the overwhelming outpouring of sentiment by the public is covered well. But it seems that Shirley, who must have sensed a lack of material with which he could work, decided to fill the pages with a rehash of virtually every newspaper story, commentary, column, and television interview that appeared during the week of Reagan's funeral. He also offered a critique on each. Not only did this portion of the book become laborious to read, but the way in which he jumped between events as they were occurring and the long diatribes against the media coverage became confusing at times. There's also one glaring historical error in the book. Shirley wrote that "Hail To The Chief" began played at presidential events because James Monroe "was so short that when he entered a room no one knew it." Monroe was, in fact, roughly six-feet-tall. James Madison, however, was only five-feet-four-inches tall, so Shirley obviously meant to reference Madison but wrote Monroe.Shirley's book is very worthwhile reading and does contains new revelations (i.e. Al Gore and Bill Clinton acted like pretentious prima donnas about seating arrangements and not being invited to speak at the National Cathedral service, President Reagan's body had Secret Service protection until it was placed in the burial vault and sealed shut around 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, etc.), but, as I noted, it falls short of his previous tomes. For the time being, however, it offers us the most intensive look into the final years of one of our greatest president's.

20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. The Legacy of Ronald Reagan By Dr. David Steele The legacy of President Ronald Reagan is securely established in history. Liberals can scoff and moan but the fact remains; Ronald Wilson Reagan is one of the most influential Americans of all time. Indeed, Reagan is not only one of the loved and respected presidents in American history; he is also one of the most effective. Most books focus on the life of President Reagan and work hard to establish his presidential accomplishments. Craig Shirley's new masterpiece, Last Act: The Final Years and Emerging Legacy of Ronald Reagan takes a different approach. Shirley sets out to help readers see Reagan in a different light and in a different context. This book serves as a lens for Americans to view President Reagan in his post-presidential days, including the days which followed his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.Last Act begins with President Reagan on his death bed. The author highlights Reagan’s life and legacy from different perspectives - including friends, family, and foes. One of the constant themes that weaves through the book is the deep and abiding love that America has for the 40th president of the United States. We would do well to listen to the words of Reagan's old arch nemesis, Senator Ted Kennedy who offered these fitting words, upon hearing of Reagan's death:He brought a special grace to the White House and the country in everything he did. We often disagreed on specific issues, but he had an undeniably unique capacity to inspire and move the Nation. On foreign policy, he will be honored as the President who won the cold war. It was more than the fact that he was a superb communicator. Some attributed at least part of his success to the fact that he was a superb communicator. Some attributed at least part of his success to the fact that he had been an actor. But his deepest convictions were matters of heart and mind and spirit, and on them, he was no actor at all.Last Act: The Final Years and Emerging Legacy of Ronald Reagan bears the marks of a book which is informed by thorough research and careful study. Craig Shirley should be commended for his clear writing and respect for the 40th president of the United States. Last Act is not only a tribute to one of the most beloved leaders in American history; it is a gift to the American people. The legacy of Ronald Wilson Reagan speaks for itself and will continue to reverberate throughout history. Antonin Scalia notes, “Ronald Reagan needs no one to sing his praises.” Justice Scalia may be on target. But the fact remains: History will not stand by in silence. The legacy of Ronald Reagan will endure for generations.I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Like the subject of his book By John Morris Like the subject of his book, author Craig Shirley has exceptional skill at using an authentic and absolutely mezmerizing story to teach us timeless principles and invaluable wisdom. In my opinion, Last Act is another of Shirley's brilliant contributions to the ever growing larger story of the life and, even the death, of the most consequential American life of his time. While it is one more Reagan book to his credit, Last Act stands in its own category. Few, if any, other political biographies exist in its style and from its perspective. I am proud to have come to know the author personally and fee we owe Craig Shirley thanks for his passionate uncovering of untold perspective and private moments of Ronald Reagan. Thanks to him, the leadership lessons are richer now as the legacy is emerging.

PDF Ebook Online Fashion: A Timeline in Photographs: 1850 to Today, by Caroline Rennolds Milbank

FASHION: A Timeline in Photographs is a definitive and beautifully illustrated visual history of fashion from one of America’s premiere fashion historians, Caroline Rennolds Milbank. This unrivaled and exceptional fashion resource is an immersive 150-year visual odyssey which tracks year-by-year, decade-by-decade, the ever-changing fashion landscape from 1850 to the present. With over 1400 photographs, almost all of which are rare—either never before published or rarely seen—we see fashion transform from the crinoline-supported billowing skirts and enormous ballooning sleeves of the late 19th century to the hemlines that fell along with the crashing stock market in 1929; through the shocking pants styles of the '30s and short A-line shifts of the '60s; through the designer-driven styles of the '80s, '90s, and today. In her introduction, Milbank explains the importance of photographs in that they “show what fashion illustrations cannot; what people actually wore, what exaggeration they adopted and the actual prevalence of style.”   While the focus is not on specific designers, notable designers are included, such as Charles Frederick Worth, Chanel, Poiret, Charles James, Karl Lagerfeld, Halston, Ungaro, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Rudi Gernreich, Celine, Geoffrey Beene, John Galliano, Issey Miyake, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Prada, and Dior. As the decades progress, photographs of designer fashion predominate, and many notable personalities are included like Princess Pauline de Metternich, considered the chicest woman in Europe in the 1860s; members of Queen Victoria's family, including her impeccably dressed daughter-in-law, Alexandra, Princess of Wales; opera stars renowned for their wardrobes, Christina Nillson, Adelina Patti; working women, athletes, dancers, actresses, courtesans, royal mistresses; feminists who chose to dress outside the fashion system like Civil War surgeon Dr. Mary Walker. Milbank states that “photographs show women courageous enough in their convictions to flout convention.”   As the book travels primarily through North America and Europe, presenting multiple images for each year, Milbank keenly illustrates how a certain style of dressing was ubiquitous--the same silhouette worn not only in France and the U.S. but also in India and Hungary. Along with tracking every major change in fashion, readers also see evolutions in hairstyles, jewelry, hat styles, outerwear, and footwear. The photographers range from the earliest well-known professionals like Disdéri, to charming amateur works as well as to the very beginning of street photography. Photographs of stylish women seen out and about span over 100 years, with recent examples from Mary Hilliard and Scott Schuman. FASHION: A Timeline in Photographs will be a welcome addition to the library of any fashion or costume designer as well as students of fashion, history, art history and photography, and is sure to become an instant classic!

Fashion: A Timeline in Photographs: 1850 to Today, by Caroline Rennolds Milbank

Review "Over the past decade, street style has become so ubiquitous it's nearly lost all meaning. Fashion: A Timeline in Photographs brings a fresh perspective to the phenomenon. With a scrapbook feel, it exhibits style through candid pictures taken from the 19th century to present - the most notable dating to a time before digital cameras and the Internet. its deliberate elimination of calculated camerawork captures a true depiction of how people dress." -SURFACE MAGAZINE"Caroline Rennolds Milbank has taken on the herculean and seemingly impossible task of chronicling fashion year by year via images that span over a century—all accompanied by very brief but enlightening text. What this feat of perseverance accomplishes is that it provides amazing details of fashion that might have previously gone unnoticed for many readers. Without question this is a book to be read, pored over, and read again if you wish to really absorb all that is included. There is an almost unending amount of information here the likes of which this reviewer has never come upon. . . this is a must for those who are obsessed with the progression of fashion as well as those who are in need of a text dedicated to how fashion has evolved since 1850."-NEW YORK JOURNAL OF BOOKS"FASHION A Timeline in Photographs:1850 to Today is a cunning combination of the scholarly-and the blur that Fashion persists in running along. . . The book's laser focus on fashion since just before the Civil War until today, illustrates each year's fashion "moment" with photographs and commentary. Harold Koda writes the foreword, solidifying the book's importance as to how we look at & in fashion. Milbank's culling of photographs-which must have been thousands and thousands, or more, is quite brilliant. This book is a heavenly marriage of fashion and photography, and we are immersed, and we are seduced, blissfully drowning in its beauty and weight."-LITTLE AUGURY BLOG“Fashion A Timeline in Photographs: 1850 to Today” is a labour of love by one of the most reliable and informed fashion scholars in the United States, Caroline Rennolds Milbank. . .  Costume designers, fashion designers, stylists and editors will find this book as invaluable as the general reader will find it engrossing."-THE BUSINESS OF FASHION

About the Author Caroline Rennolds Milbank is a fashion historian and the author of four books and has been a costume curator for exhibitions at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Clark Art Institute. As compelling from an anthropological and historical standpoint as it is beautiful, you will understand your mother and grandmot By Amazon Customer If you purchase one fashion book this holiday season - or indeed this decade - let it be Fashion: A Timeline in Photographs. Milbank captures the essence of each year beginning in 1850, with a collection of images that each has something specific and illuminating to tell us about that particular moment in time. Her fresh observations about the evolution of the silhouette, accessories, innovations in textiles and technology, and what that all means for the changing role of women as expressed in the fashion of the time keep the reader flipping back to the rich trove of footnotes over and over again for more details. In fact, my only suggestion to her editor would have been to incorporate more of that information in the text for each year. As compelling from an anthropological and historical standpoint as it is beautiful, you will understand your mother and grandmother and therefore yourself, better after reading this book. Don’t delay!

By mcf/NYC This has become my go-to present for women who appreciate style, whimsy, and history. Just yesterday, a hard-to-please recipient sent a thank you text that read, “U got me the perfect birthday gift. Love u tons!” Fashion: A Timeline in Photographs by Caroline Milbank is simply a dazzling book, and you don’t have to be a fashionista to appreciate the hundreds of carefully researched archival photographs and witty, bite-sized descriptions by this big deal fashion historian and curator. Each year since 1850 is told with photos starting with rare images that I have never seen before. Other examples include an 1895 account of the bicycle’s enormous effect on women’s mobility and a magazine noting that “GREAT care should be exercised in the choice of a bicycle suit…must be neat and trim”; a 1910 survey of hats; a LOL 1920s section about the rise of androgyny; see the 1930s sports clothes on page 161; and of course the 1960s described with titles such as “freewheeling” and “bare minimum” followed by the familiar looking shoulder pads of the 1980s, right up to the most current styles.Detailed footnotes are included at the end of the book for the fashion academics, plus a foreword by the esteemed Harold Koda, head of the Met’s Costume Institute. For a photo preview, I found the author on Instagram.

This is the second volume to make these witty, and highly accessible, podcasts available in book form. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. an engaging basic primer on philosophy By Arnold Peter Adamson's book "Philosophy in the Hellenistic and Roman Worlds" is based on his podcast "History of Philosophy Without Gaps" and you can tell. I've often found podcasts to be great resources for learning and teaching history. They encourage a conversational style and lively prose than most textbooks, which are unfortunately needlessly dry. I'd been a big fan of the "History of Rome" podcast and Adamson is in many ways a natural successor to that great effort.Fortunately, Adamson's approach translates well to prose. He has a simple and engaging manner in describing sometimes complex philosophical issues. Adamson uses witty examples, sometimes from pop culture, to better relate the material to younger readers. I particularly like his use of questions to guide readers towards their own insights. There are already countless books about Greek and Roman philosophy, so this is definitely a crowded field. I can't claim to have read them all, but I'd definitely recommend this one as a basic primer. It might even work as a textbook for an intro to philosophy class.I don't know if Adamson's podcast will really not have any gaps. For example, it seems that he doesn't spend as much time with non-Western philosophy. But it's a great resource.

A master-class to take slowly, engaging style By Italophile Book Reviews The subtitle of this book is A History of Philosophy without any gaps, Volume 2. It is the book form of a podcast available on-line. In the book you will learn about:- Hellenistic Philosophy,- Pagan Philosophy in the Roman Empire, and- (Judeo) Christian Philosophy in the Roman Empire. The book is divided into those three parts, but has many overlaps. Included for eager students are Notes, a Bibliography, an Index (in the print edition) and a Further Reading list.In this volume one meets the Skeptics, Epicurus, Stoics... all sorts of curious characters, including Plotinus, Augustine and Philo of Alexandria, and even Moses of Old Testament (Torah) fame. The author tries to engage the reader, often using popular culture references or questions:"Do you like a nice garden? Do you enjoy the company of friends? Do you believe the world is made of tiny particles, which you call atoms? Do you trust the evidence of your senses? Do you find politics tiresome, and raise a skeptical eyebrow at those who live in fear of God? If your answer to these questions is "yes", then you might want to consider becoming an Epicurean."The religious philosophers were concerned with what all philosophers are concerned with: ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, philology, the mind, and even political philosophy such as how society should best be governed.A direct line is drawn from Moses to Plato to Aristotle to the Stoics to Neo-Platonism to Judeo-Christian thought. All those thinkers stress the need to turn away from the pleasure of the body (our animalistic nature) and turn toward virtue and a faithfulness to God (our divine nature). One must be aware of both our higher and lower natures, and integrate the two as a whole person, self plus soul. The author has more books in the works, and plans to cover in his works all 2500 years of western philosophical thought, without any gaps.Pre-SocraticsPlato and AristotleHellenistic period philosophersRoman era thinkersJudeo-Christian thinkersAncient philosophies preserved by Muslims, then Christian monks, leading toByzantine and Renaissance thought and philosophyThe EnlightenmentModern and Post-Modern thought and philosophyThe author aims to educate anyone who wants to know about the history of philosophy, through his podcasts, and with the books. His style is approachable and knowledgeable. He lightens the text with humor when possible. So if you are interested in learning the history of thoughts on how we should live, and what is the nature of man, truth, language and knowledge, this might be a book for you, together with Book 1 which covers Classical Philosophy, namely Plato and Aristotle.I've read other philosophy books, and attended university lectures on philosophy, so I have some basis of comparison when judging this book. To me, it reads like a really fun philosophy professor's lecture notes. The professor is modern minded, including two subjects professors of history and philosophy often skip when talking about the ancients: pervasive slavery and the negligible role of women in the paternalistic societies. I would have like to have seen more mention of the institutional sadism of the societies in which these philosophers lived, another subject often overlooked. Please visit my full and illustrated review at Italophile Book Reviews. I received a review-copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Wonderful historical overview of philosophy from a wonderful series By Earl Peter Adamson adapts his podcasts A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps into a series of books, of which Philosophy in the Hellenistic and Roman Worlds is volume two. Like the podcasts the book is enjoyable while also making this history very accessible to any audience. As a history rather than an in-depth philosophy book this work presents the ideas and the connections (as well as disconnections) to other ideas clearly. Philosophy is an ongoing discussion or debate. A philosophy book, the kind that many people think of as a sleep aid, takes as its starting point a reaction to another school of thought then proceeds to develop its own argument. A history of philosophy, however, is more concerned with what each school or thinker thought in relation to what came before and what follows. For this reason ideas are presented with enough explanation for them to be understandable as a response to another idea. Adamson excels at giving excellent overviews of ideas and connecting them forward and backward with great humor and insight. This is ideal for those who want to read about philosophy without feeling overwhelmed. Especially valuable for these readers are the notes and suggestions for further reading. When you find a thinker or idea that intrigues you, the resources are presented for you to delve deeper. I know that this will be a great addition to those who have studied philosophy because we usually tend to focus as time goes on on narrow expanses of philosophical thought. This is a refreshing step back to help regain the perspective of the larger conversation, as well as suggest new connections we might have overlooked. As a potential textbook I think it has great value for an intro course. Also it would accompany an honors sequence which might be multidisciplinary very well because it presents the ideas in relation to the cultures within which they flourished. Also a good book for a high school course.Reviewed from an ARC made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

There are so many things that we do not have control over, things that we would not ever choose: cancer, loosing a spouse, tragic accidents. But we can choose how we will handle these things. Joy is a choice that anyone can make but not everyone knows how. Facing cancer, becoming a widow, loosing the future as the author saw it made her recognize that she had to choose a way to deal with the present.

I was standing in my bathroom with two of my granddaughters in the bath tub, and my son, Noah, who was home from school for the weekend, when I got the call that would change everything. It was September 5, 2008, and for some reason I remember the exact time of day: 2:57 in the afternoon. The Surgical Oncologist’s office called to tell me that the biopsy I had had two days prior was positive for breast cancer. The voice on the cordless phone was blathering on as I attempted to take notes on a pad of paper. “Blah, blah, blah, carcinoma, blah, blah, means cancer, blah… We will call you Tuesday with the next step, blah, blah…Don’t worry. Try to have a nice weekend.”

The crying started before I pushed “end” on the phone. Noah hugged me. I called Steve to tell him, but I could not stop wailing. He told me he was on his way home. I suppose it must have been Noah who helped the girls out of the bathtub. The moments immediately following that fateful call are a bit of a blur. I remember Steve finally getting home, and crying with me. He held me so tight, loved me so much. He apologized for anything he had ever done to hurt me. And we both cried out to God.

I knew I had to let my kids know immediately. And of course my dad had to be told, and Steve’s mom, my brother’s wife, who had kept Steve company during my biopsy, and my prayer warrior cousin Mary. Phone calls were made. People started arriving. Everyone was crying, except Noah, the rock of the family who rarely shows emotion.

Later in the evening someone was finally able to get a call through to my son, Luke. He, my daughter-in-law Megan, and their two kids had left just that morning to return to New York after two weeks of leave from the U.S. Navy.

I tried to act to tough. I heard the same words repeated all evening: This is just a bump in the road, no big deal. Cancer research has come so far. Medicine in Grand Rapids has come a long way. Cancer is not like it used to be, it could be a lot worse. You are so strong. You will get through this. We’re so sorry. What can I do to help? I will be there for you the whole way. I love you. I will pray for you.

Inspired by the pathbreaking work of Howard Zinn, A People’s Art History of the United States is propelled by a democratic vision of art, showing that art doesn’t just belong within the confines of museums and archives. In fact, art is created every day in the street and all around us, and everyone deserves to be a part of it.Called “important” by renowned art critic Lucy Lippard, A People’s Art History of the United States introduces us to key works of American radical art alongside dramatic retellings of the histories that inspired them. Richly illustrated with more than two hundred black-and-white images, this book by acclaimed artist and author Nicolas Lampert is the go-to resource for everyone who wants to know what activist art can and does do for our society.Spanning the abolitionist movement, early labor movements, women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, and up to the present antiglobalization movement and beyond, A People’s Art History of the United States is a wonderful read as well as a brilliant toolkit for today’s artists and activists to adapt past tactics to the present, utilizing art and media as a form of civil disobedience.

A People's Art History of the United States: 250 Years of Activist Art and Artists Working in Social Justice Movements, by Nicolas Lampert

From Booklist Following the trail blazed by historian Howard Zinn, author of the paradigm-shifting A People’s History of the United States (1980), artist and writer Lampert addresses the essential yet underappreciated role activist art has played in diverse social reform movements. In a sweeping journey across America and through past eras, Lampert casts light on the stories behind such propagandistic images as Paul Revere’s engraving The Bloody Massacre and the “liberation graphics” in abolitionist materials. The work of progressive photographers is prominent here, from Jacob A. Riis’ famous tenement images to Danny Lyon’s courageous civil rights movement documentation and army photographer Ronald L. Haeberle’s exposure of the My Lai massacre. Covering vast amounts of information in a free-rolling, thoroughly engaging manner, Lampert analyzes the posters, flyers, placards, banners, publications, and street theater associated with everything from the labor, antiwar, and nuclear disarmament movements to feminist, Chicano, and AIDS civil rights organizations. Lampert’s eye-opening, history-enriching, and superbly well-illustrated exposition of the union of art and activism reminds us of how creative dissent can be and how necessary it is to our democracy. --Donna Seaman

Review Praise for A People's Art History of the United States:"This is an important first volley in what I hope is an ongoing fusillade of people’s art histories. There are many more stories to tell, here and abroad. Those relayed by Nicolas Lampert offer models for an art that actively engages in and helps change the course of history."—Lucy R. Lippard, author of Get the Message? A Decade of Art for Social Change"Readable and instructive."—Publishers Weekly"A much welcome, fresh view of American political art."—Paul Buhle, editor of A People's History of American Empire"This book is an excellent jumping-off point for anyone unfamiliar with the powerful social justice roots of American culture, offering wonderful examples of historical points along the timeline of agitational American art. Lampert’s credentials as an activist artist give him an insider’s view of this important yet marginalized subject. It’s an antidote to the conventional ‘Art’ model where form dominates content and artistic creativity is reduced to marketable commodities."—Lincoln Cushing, author of All of Us or None: Social Justice Posters of the San Francisco Bay Area"By introducing the significant role that artists have played throughout the history of the United States, Nicolas Lampert offers readers the delight of returning to a familiar narrative and discovering a fascinating reinterpretation. This well-wrought interdisciplinary text demonstrates that artists do not merely respond to and record the events transpiring in their lifetimes; they also shape these events by applying the tools of their profession to accomplish clearly articulated political agendas."—Linda Weintraub, author of Art on the Edge and Over: Searching for Art’s Meaning in Contemporary Society"Inspired by the revisionist social histories of Howard Zinn, Nicolas Lampert’s A People’s Art History of the United States is an inspiration in itself. Looking beyond an art world framed by museums and markets, Lampert surveys American activist cultures from the colonial era to the present. His passion for social change and his optimism about creative and constructive resistance come on strong in this well-written and wonderfully illustrated book. Highly recommended."—Erika Doss, professor of American studies, University of Notre Dame"Historical amnesia is rampant in U.S. politics today, no less so in the visual arts, where the current wave of social practice art often suffers from a lack of awareness of what came before. This is an original piece of research, pointing us toward a vast territory of reconnection."—Suzanne Lacy, artist/writer, Otis College of Art and Design"As much as it is easy to say that there are many histories of art that aren’t those of the commercial system, the backing up of that statement with counter-histories is no small task. Here we have a tremendous contribution to a history of art that demonstrates how critical culture is to the production of people’s movements."—Nato Thompson, chief curator, Creative Time"Written in accessible prose, Lampert’s wonderful book is suitable for the university classroom or the union hall, the anarchist bookstore or bedtime reading for teenagers. When teaching on art and social justice at the university level, A People’s Art History of the United States has become the go-to book on the subject."—Dylan Miner, associate professor, Michigan State University, and author of Creating Aztlán: Chicano Art, Indigenous Sovereignty, and Lowriding Across Turtle Island"In an image-based culture such as late-stage American capitalism, political art is frequently deployed as a stand in for political engagement itself, with little explanation of the social context that drove the work into being. Nicolas Lampert gives us the stories behind the potent images that have changed the way we think about ourselves, which is the point in studying them in the first place."—Avram Finkelstein, ACT UP NYC

I found this book to be an engaging and informative timeline of art in social and political movements. I would recommend this title for artists, activists, and anyone interested in the power that visual art plays in society. It examines both art history and US history and is applicable to high school and college students on up. It is both informative and inspiring.

By colin matthes A People’s Art History of the United States is a series of illustrated essays about artists’ participation in social movements. I am finding the book surprisingly addictive; unlike most series of essays it is hard to put down. As a college art instructor I am already thinking about ways the book could apply to my classes. It will get art students engaged in history and provide numerous paths to think about how their work can be part of movements. It seems highly teachable to high school and college students, and applicable to history, art, and cultural studies classes. The book highlights compelling examples of art playing a complicated, multifaceted, or visionary role in activism and history. For example, one chapter looks at the Paterson Strike, and analyzes how the IWW and a bohemian NYC subculture sided with the silk workers on strike. There is a theatre performance in New York City about the Paterson, New Jersey strike, with strikers as the cast, during the actual strike. By no means a success, this idea of creating theatre or performance about a real life event while it is happening is bold, risky, and inspiring.

An inspiring and informative read By Clara Elizabeth I enjoyed how "A People's Art History of the United States" surveys different projects over time to instill positive change in the world. My favorite chapter was,"Living Water: Sustainability Through Collaboration", about artist Betsy Damon and the 6 acre Living Water Garden she collaboratively created in Chengdu, China. It was inspiring to read about so many different projects over time and to learn how individual passions led to greater ideas, and resulted in art movements, newspapers, and actions that helped address societal problems.

Syria was once one of the Middle East?s most stable states. Today it is a country on its knees. Almost 200,000 people are estimated to have died in its bloody internal conflict and, as the violence intensifies, Syria?s future looks bleak.

In this timely book, Samer Abboud provides an in-depth analysis of Syria?s descent into civil war. He unravels the complex and multi-layered causes of the current political and military stalemate - from rebel fragmentation to the differing roles of international actors, and the rise of competing centers of power throughout the country. Rebel in-fighting and the lack of a centralizing authority, he contends, have exacerbated Syria?s fragmentation and fragility. This, in turn, has aided the survival of the Assad regime, contributed to the upsurge of sectarianism, and led to a major humanitarian crisis as nine million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes.

A resolution to the Syrian conflict seems unlikely in the short-term as the major actors remains committed to a military solution. As this situation persists, the continued fighting is reshaping Syria?s borders and will have repercussions on the wider Middle East for decades to come.

Review

"This book brings together the phases and dimensions of the Syrian conflict in a uniquely convincing and comprehensive way. This is prefaced by a useful overview of the historical context of the Uprising. The book?s sections on the militarisation of the conflict are especially valuable." Raymond Hinnebusch, University of St Andrews

Samer Abboud offers a cogent survey of multiple dimensions of the Syrian civil war. Readers will find authoritative, yet accessible, treatments of the radical Islamists of the Assistance Front (Jabhat al-Nusra) and the Islamic State, the innovative Kurdish autonomy projent, the horrendous economic and human costs of the fighting, and the puzzling responses of foreign actors, particularly Russia and the United Nations, among many other crucial topics.Fred H. Lawson, Mills College

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. making it easy for readers to follow By Amazon Customer Abboud, Samer N. Syria. Malde, MA: Polity Press, 2016I am an undergraduate student and have been conducting research on the Syrian refugee and humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Since this is a current event, I couldn’t find many books on the topic, but with the help of my professor, he guided me towards this helpful source. Samer N. Abboud, a professor of international studies and a man of Arabic descent, eloquently explains the incidents that eventually led to Syria’s five-year civil war. The situation is very complex, yet Abboud sheds light and clarity on the issue by focusing on each factor or party separately. The detailed analysis, which spans a couple chapters, organizes the events in chronological order, making it easy for readers to follow. And towards the end of the book, he even analyzes the humanitarian crisis that has evolved within many of the neighboring Middle Eastern nations and the European Union, broadening the scopes of his scholarship. His information is up-to-date and accurate as he has referenced a number of sources that include academic magazines, international newspapers, and scholarly work from well-renowned universities. I haven’t finished the entirety of this book but it has been quite helpful in my research thus far as it looks at both the history of the crisis and the present-day realities. It is an excellent source for anyone conducting research within this area or just interested in extending their knowledge on his horrific, unfolding event.

Manning Like so many other western tracts on Syria since 2011, Samer Abbound's starts on the wrong foot.In particular, the assumptions that western aims = stated aims, i.e. of 'resolving conflict' and fighting terrorism(narrowly defined here as ISIS; Abboud specifically includes JAN/al Qaeda as a legitimate player) are simply not credibleAfter five years, the evidence is pretty clear that 'regime change' remains Washington's main driveras with the other recent ME interventions (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya). The idea that outside agencies are going to reconstitute the secular Syrian state(Abboud: 'a robust, holistic plan', to 'institutionalize decentralised authority' - i.e. balkanisation)while mouthing inconsistent platitudes about the right of the Syrian people to self-determination, inclusiveness, territorial integrity, etcis rather fanciful, especially now the military tide has turned and the Syria state is not on its knees.

Abboud; who is Associate Professor of International Studies at the Department of Historical and Political Studies, Arcadia University Glenside, Pennsylvania, United States. The author’s book brings together the various events and the many faceted sides to the complexity of the Syrian conflict. This is done in a distinctively cogent and wide-ranging examination. The narrative is preceded by the beneficial summary of the historical background of the Uprising. Sections such as the militarisation of the conflict are of particularly value. The Table of Contents below best illustrates the areas that will be looked at.AcknowledgementsMapsIntroductionChapter One: The Rise and Fall of the Ba'ath PartyChapter Two: The Syrian UprisingChapter Three: The Emergence of Armed OppositionChapter Four: When the World Wades InChapter Five: FragmentationChapter Six: The Humanitarian CrisisConclusion: Prospects for ResolutionBibliographyThe writing style is poised, yet manageable, in its treatments of the radical Islamists and the Islamic State, the Kurdish involvement and their “war objectives”. There are of course the awful economic crisis and humanitarian costs of the war, and then there are the rather disjointed responses of foreign powers, which at times seem to be at odds. Of particular interest are the roles of Russia and the United Nations. This insightful narrative demystifies a complex and terrible conflict, and should be essential reading for anyone who desires to better comprehend Syria s violent decent into civil war..
