When a chimpanzee stockpiles rocks as weapons or when a frog sends out mating calls, we might easily assume these animals know their own motivations--that they use the same psychological mechanisms that we do. But as Beyond the Brain indicates, this is a dangerous assumption because animals have different evolutionary trajectories, ecological niches, and physical attributes. How do these differences influence animal thinking and behavior? Removing our human-centered spectacles, Louise Barrett investigates the mind and brain and offers an alternative approach for understanding animal and human cognition. Drawing on examples from animal behavior, comparative psychology, robotics, artificial life, developmental psychology, and cognitive science, Barrett provides remarkable new insights into how animals and humans depend on their bodies and environment--not just their brains--to behave intelligently.

Barrett begins with an overview of human cognitive adaptations and how these color our views of other species, brains, and minds. Considering when it is worth having a big brain--or indeed having a brain at all--she investigates exactly what brains are good at. Showing that the brain's evolutionary function guides action in the world, she looks at how physical structure contributes to cognitive processes, and she demonstrates how these processes employ materials and resources in specific environments.

Arguing that thinking and behavior constitute a property of the whole organism, not just the brain, Beyond the Brain illustrates how the body, brain, and cognition are tied to the wider world.

Beyond the Brain: How Body and Environment Shape Animal and Human Minds, by Louise Barrett

Review One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2012"Beyond the Brain is an astonishingly good book, both substantive and fun to read. . . . Barrett re-centres the field on the study of animal cognition. I think this is an excellent decision, and not just because it allows her to tell some great animal stories. The main advantage is not narrative but substantive: her careful reconstruction of the grounds of natural cognition is simply more convincing and more relevant than even the best discussion of artificial intelligence could ever be. . . . Beyond the Brain is full of . . . interesting and heterodox discussions, and is sure to engage, enrage, and inspire in differential measure depending on the reader's theoretical proclivities."--Michael L. Anderson, Journal of Consciousness Studies"[T]his book provides an excellent synthesis of psychology, philosophy, robotics and biology on the topic of animal and human cognition. The prose is accessible and easy to read, and Barrett effectively uses everyday examples to make theoretical and technical points clear. . . . [T]his book . . . gave me a lot of new insights. I highly recommend it to scientists and students interested in understanding animal and human minds."--Sabine Tebbich, Animal Behaviour"Barrett's book is a superb and unique bit of thinking, and so eminently readable and enticing that it will appeal to the mainstream. . . . It is so rare to find a richly scientific and philosophical book that the reader will find hard to put down, as if it were a bestselling novel, and I hope this book actually reaches a bestseller list, it is that good, and has that wide an audience, from layman to cognitive scientist. I recommend it to any university under or post-graduate course, as one of the most intriguing and compelling works I have ever read or reviewed. This is not due alone to the startling facts, or her humor, or any other single facet, but owes much to her integration of so many aspects of argument, philosophy, science, anthropology, ecological psychology and others, that it teaches the student, in passing, to think outside of the umwelt. A great contribution."--Roy Sugarman, Metapsychology"Beyond the Brain is indeed an amusing and entertaining read, but one with an extraordinary analytical rigor and eloquence of argument. Very accessible, enticing, and lucidly written, it can be enjoyed both by professional academics and laypeople. Readers--be they novice or seasoned--will certainly find the volume uplifting and inspirational, Barrett's style brisk and delightful and her intellectual playfulness quite solacing. . . . A must read for the next generations of cognitive scientists and for all those who are interested in the study of comparative cognition."--Mirko Farina, Phenomenology and Cognitive Sciences"[W]e can see Barrett's brave new book as a beacon to future generations of scientists who wish to investigate the particularly human niche in cognitive evolution."--Daniel J. Povinelli, Human Ethology Bulletin"[I]f you are new to the area of embodied cognition, read this book. If you're familiar with the literature but want a clear, well-structured presentation of many of the key ideas, then read this book. If you're bored with the same old examples and want some new, perhaps more convincing examples of embodied cognition in action, read this book. And if you have heard some of the arguments but still think behaviour really comes from the computational activity of our complex brains, then, for the love of science, read this book."--Andrew Wilson, Notes from Two Scientific Psychologists"I am jealous of this book, especially of the first half. It is so well written. Barrett picks exactly the right examples and weaves them together in exactly the right ways. It is clear that Barrett has put great care into the construction of Beyond the Brain, and her success should be rewarded by a wide readership."--Eric P. Charles, PsycCRITIQUES"Beyond the Brain explores the emerging field of embedded cognition, in which the mind is seen as more than a product of brain mechanisms. . . . Barrett provides a thorough, well-written introduction to the disparate schools of thought on embedded cognition, starting with a discussion of what human brains really do and the ways in which brainpower is adaptive."--Choice"Drawing on examples from animal behavior, comparative psychology, robotics, artificial life, developmental psychology, and cognitive science, Barrett provides remarkable new insights into how animals and humans depend on their bodies and environment--not just their brains--to behave intelligently."--Daniel J. Povinelli, Leonardo Reviews"Barrett's book contains many bold ideas, expressed in a lively and engaging style; with nice touches of humor, it is both thought provoking and entertaining. Her relational, environment-based, action-oriented perspective is deeply compatible with behavior analysis, and I suspect many behavior analysts will be nodding in agreement with many of the thoughtful and well developed arguments put forth in the book."--Timothy D. Hackenberg, Behaviour Analyst

From the Back Cover

"Louise Barrett's latest book is a beacon of hope for anyone who worries that the study of the evolution of cognition is being reduced to nothing but sensationalistic claims about the nature of the animal mind. With delightful prose, she makes a strong case that overinflated notions regarding how human minds work have tragically distorted our view of other animals. Barrett's book is a highest-priority must read for the next generation of scientists interested in the evolution of cognition."--Daniel J. Povinelli, University of Louisiana

"A delight to read, this very ambitious book furnishes a fresh perspective on animal behavior. Barrett synthesizes a broad literature from fields as diverse as ethology, ecological psychology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and philosophy, and masterfully weaves the different strands together into an iconoclastic but coherent view of cognitive behavior. A reader could not wish for a clearer guide into this new field."--Carel van Schaik, Anthropological Institute and Museum, University of Zürich

"This is an excellent book about comparative cognition, how minds and brains evolve, and how to think about the minds of animals."--Nicola S. Clayton, University of Cambridge

"Clear and engaging, this thought-provoking book is an excellent synthesis of new directions in cognitive science and evolution. The use of everyday and humorous examples is effective, and the scholarship is impressive in its breadth and rigor, combining ideas from ecological psychology, robotics, cognitive science, and evolutionary biology. A stimulating read, it will have scientists questioning conventional wisdom about the nature of cognition and species difference."--Robert Barton, Durham University

"Arguing that observed animal behavior is substantially organized by both an organism's physical structure and environmental affordances, this book raises interesting questions about the role of cognition in behavior and the attribution of complex behaviors to cognitive processes similar to those purportedly supporting human behavior. An intriguing and engaging book."--Bennett Galef, McMaster University

About the Author Louise Barrett is Professor of Psychology and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Cognition, Evolution, and Behavior at the University of Lethbridge. She is the author of Baboons and the coauthor of Cousins, Walking with Cavemen, Human Evolutionary Psychology, and Evolutionary Psychology.

Woika In Beyond the Brain, How Body and Environment Shape Animal and Human Minds,Louise Barrett creates an argument that intelligence and behavior are not due to the brain alonebut rather to a complex interaction of an animal's body, environment, and nervous system. Herargument is supported by a number of examples in both living systems and artificial intelligences(AIs). As the book progresses, Barrett repeatedly references and links to concepts coveredpreviously. This referencing makes it easier to understand her argument as some parts of thebook are abstract or do not follow conventional thinking. The purpose of this review is to brieflydescribe critical parts of the argument.Anti-anthropomorphism:Louise Barrett begins her argument by suggesting that anthropomorphism should belimited when trying to determine how an animal's behavior is developed. This argument is basedon the fact that anthropocentric view limits how we are able to explain an animal's behavior bytrying to force it to function based on the same mechanisms that we function when the behaviorcould be developed by completely different causes. This is important because "other animalshave different bodies and different nervous systems, and live in different habitats. This meansthat, even though their behavior may look similar to ours in some way or another, it need not beproduced by the same underlying mechanism."This is a particularly interesting point because people (including me) like toanthropomorphize things. As a result of reading this book, I hope that I will be more cautious inmy assumptions of what mechanisms are functioning behind behavior. Barrett presents a muchbetter argument against oversimplification due to anthropomorphism than described above.Complex behavior and small brains:Barrett presents evidence that complex behaviors are not necessarily the result of bigbrains or complex computations in the head. In this section, Barrett proposes that big brains andcomplex neural computations are not necessary for seemingly complex behaviors, but thatbehaviors can be achieved based on the animal's body and how it interacts with the environment. For example, clusters of objects that are formed by didabots. Didabots are simple robots thathave two optical sensors on either side of their head and operate on one simple rule: "if thesensor on the right is activated, they turn left, and if the sensor on the left is activated, they turnright." Based on this rule and body configuration the didabots tend to form clusters of objectswhen they are placed in a crowded environment. This clustering is not the goal or purpose of thedidabots and is not guided by complex rules or computations, but rather "is an emergent propertyof a very simple "self-organizing" process that reflects the coupling between the didabots'movements and how these robots interact with the objects in the environment." This is just abrief example of how a complex behavior (clustering of objects) can be brought about by simplemechanism. Barrett provides more examples of this interesting occurrence in her book.Behavior is environmentally determined:Louise Barrett challenges the notion that practical behavior can result just based on thepresence of a brain. Here, she logically argues that the behavior is the result of the nervoussystem being embodied in the environment. This is particularly important in how an animalperceives the world. Perception as Barrett describes in not a passive process in which the animalmerely receives a stimulus from the environment and produces a response but a "is a matter ofactive exploration of, and attention to, the environment." This is based on the fact that animalsare capable of acting on their environment and that their actions result in changes in theirenvironment. Consequently, animals receive different stimuli based on their actions.Additionally, Barrett points out that it is impossible to have a nervous system be meaningfulwithout a body to act with and an environment to act upon.More interesting quotes:"[O]nce we begin exploring the actual mechanisms that animals use to negotiate their worlds, itbecomes very hard to decide where "perception" ends and "cognition" starts. One reason for thisis that we may be thinking about these things in the wrong way, and so make false distinctions;we tend to assume that perception is merely the passive reception of information from the world, especially compared to the active manipulation of information that we assume cognition entails. But perceptual processes are much more active than we think, and, as a result, they are highlyinstrumental in enabling animals to behave flexibly."" First, when we talk about the behavioral flexibility and intelligence of animals, we're alwaysdoing so in relation to the environments in which they are embedded. The flexibility we seeemerges as a consequence of the engagement between the organisms and the environment, and isnot due to the animal alone (remember the parable of the ant). Moreover, the flexibility andintelligence we see is also relative because, as in our foraging ant example, the intelligenceshown is not a property of the animal, or its brain, or even the evolutionary process that gave riseto it, but is, in fact, in the eye of the beholder.31 We see "intelligence" because we look on asoutsiders, whereas, in many cases, the organisms themselves have no knowledge orunderstanding of the fact that they are exploiting certain physical properties of the environment,or even that such properties exist."Conclusion:In conclusion, I would recommend this book to others. It offers a different approach to whatintelligence really is. Additionally, this book challenges what Louise Barrett considers aneurocentric view and shows that much of an animal's behavior is specifically linked to thebody's construction and environment, and that a large amount of computation is not done by thebrain but rather in the morphology of an animal.

By Eric P Charles This book explains, in an approachable way, what increasingly seems like it will be the future of scientific psychology - a view of the organism (human or otherwise) embedded in its world, with the brain viewed as crucially important, but not as a central-control mechanism. Most importantly, this book takes some of the ideas in psychology that often seem the most crazy - Gibson's ecological psychology, Clark's extended cognition - and makes them seem almost inevitable. The ideas haven't gotten any simpler, Barrett is incredibly skilled at explaining them. If you want to know more about the book, check out the summary here:[...]

Simply brilliant By Beatlesandtea Dr. Louise Barrett's perspective on embodied cognition is enlightening, and a welcome break from the tiresome excess of brain-centric literature that pervades psychology. Beyond the Brain is for anyone who has ever wondered how simple creatures exhibit complex behaviours all without an intricate brain. Dr. Barrett reintegrates the environment as a central influence in shaping behaviour. If one has not had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Barrett discuss embodied cognition in person, then I strongly recommend Beyond the Brain: How Body and Environment Shape Animal and Human Minds. Dr. Barrett's wit and charm make Beyond the Brain an entertaining and illuminating read.

This fourth book in the Essence Path series, “Timeline Collapse and Universal Ascension: The Future of Third Dimensional Earth and Fifth Dimensional Terra,” continues an extraordinary journey into higher levels of spiritual guidance, awakening and the metaphysical world. The first part of the two-part book provides detailed information concerning the collapse and regeneration of the current Third Dimensional timeline on Earth. It details predictions of major world events, including the advent and aftermath of World War III as well as other cataclysmic global transformations seen to occur on the future timeline of Earth between now and the year 2569. It also gives insight into why there is a widening rift on Earth between those Souls destined to continue incarnating in lifetimes on Third Dimensional Earth and those destined to Ascend to a Fifth Dimensional version of Earth known as the planet Terra. Part Two of the book opens an unprecedented window into the ongoing Ascension of Human Angelic Souls to higher dimensional fields and provides a first look at lifetimes and galactic events seen on the future timeline of the Fifth Dimensional planet Terra. Wilde Mr. Nicolay's information on certain matters already coincided with conclusions I had drawn by extensive research, evaluation, and reading...so I was highly intrigued to read this book. I had the simple tools of a detective...discovering evidence, reasoning, evaluating witnesses, examining physical evidence, and so forth. Many, many detective novels (of which I have read hundreds and hundreds) will have the lead detective conclude that, once you have eliminated all possible deductions or conclusions by credible evidence or testimony, you are left with one conclusion which is the truth, however improbable that conclusion may present itself...and sure enough. The detective catches the killer/perpetrator.Mr. Nicolay is blessed with a far greater ability. When the world doesn't make sense, when you know something isn't "right," when you can see with your own eyes that people/governments/countries have repeatedly lied and failed to implement the agenda for which their citizens have voted, you simply need access to other ways of obtaining information. If you are lucky, you will read this book.

  • Conclusion
An excerpt from the book: An INFJ is someone who is usually well aware of the influence they have on the people around them. This, if combined with the tendency for organizing, planning and structuring, and high moral values, makes great leaders out of them. Being an INFJ, you might be more concentrated on people in your organization than on taking the firm itself to its bright and prosperous future. Thanks to your personal and empathetic approach, you can find a common language with others more easily than most introverts can. Because you address people through your Extraverted feeling, and you are guided by Introverted intuition, you may seem even more accessible to others than you really are. Even though you probably do not directly seek popularity, fame or leading positions, like most INFJs, they do seem to find you anyway. You can be a great leader, if you are guided by good inspiration. In this case, you “infect” everyone with your irresistible trust in the righteousness of your mission and your enthusiasm. You always try to help others see your vision and let them decide whether to follow you on their own, rather than force them into obedience. Be familiar with eating disorders through this book By Andy Gray At times, we think some people are just being too choosy with the food they eat or that they eat too much and the likes. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure, we are not being sensitive enough. Some, or even possibly, most of these people have eating disorders that make it difficult for them to manage or control what they eat. This book is a good start up book if you want to learn about the different eating disorders existing. This book did a good job in touching up the eating disorders so people will get acquainted with them.

One of Library Journal’s 10 Best Books of 2015

Following his acclaimed Atlantic and The Men Who United the States, New York Times bestselling author Simon Winchester offers an enthralling biography of the Pacific Ocean and its role in the modern world, exploring our relationship with this imposing force of nature.

As the Mediterranean shaped the classical world, and the Atlantic connected Europe to the New World, the Pacific Ocean defines our tomorrow. With China on the rise, so, too, are the American cities of the West coast, including Seattle, San Francisco, and the long cluster of towns down the Silicon Valley.

Today, the Pacific is ascendant. Its geological history has long transformed us—tremendous earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis—but its human history, from a Western perspective, is quite young, beginning with Magellan’s sixteenth-century circumnavigation. It is a natural wonder whose most fascinating history is currently being made.

In telling the story of the Pacific, Simon Winchester takes us from the Bering Strait to Cape Horn, the Yangtze River to the Panama Canal, and to the many small islands and archipelagos that lie in between. He observes the fall of a dictator in Manila, visits aboriginals in northern Queensland, and is jailed in Tierra del Fuego, the land at the end of the world. His journey encompasses a trip down the Alaska Highway, a stop at the isolated Pitcairn Islands, a trek across South Korea and a glimpse of its mysterious northern neighbor.

Winchester’s personal experience is vast and his storytelling second to none. And his historical understanding of the region is formidable, making Pacific a paean to this magnificent sea of beauty, myth, and imagination that is transforming our lives.

By lyndonbrecht Let me start by saying that this is Winchester's best book. As in all his books (at least the four I have read) this means a story well told, thoroughly researched and informed by extensive personal experience traveling in the places he writes about. Now, I need to add that some, perhaps many readers, will be puzzled by the structure of the book and by its tone. His chapter on American treatment of Pacific islanders is one that should shame Americans, but may rile some readers because of its rather anti-American policy tone (but not fundamentally anti-American; do remember he is British). The book also powerfully evokes change, in particular what academics might term a loss of hegemony--the French loss of Indochina, the British retreat from Asia, the rise of Chinese power sufficient to challenge the United States. The book is also hopeful of the growth of respect and understanding (the last few pages articulates this sense, using the story of the Hawai'ian ocean-going canoe Hokole'a. The book is somewhat chronologic, but the intent is to give a sense of complexity and interconnection, because a literal history would be at minimum several volumes.Winchester covers history rather well in a backstory sense, but the book starts with January 1, 1950. This is the defined date for the "present," in the sense that a date of say 3,000 BP now means 3,000 years before 1950. The chapters start with short historical or human stories and segue into larger topics. For example, Chapter 10 starts with the eruption of Mt Pinutubo in the Philippines, destroying two major US bases, then segues into another volcano, growing Chinese economic and military strength, including the extremely effective Chinese strategies now unfolding in the seas adjacent to and extending from China's coast. This chapter, by the way, should be required reading for anyone interested in China's military. His introduction is, I think, superb. Read it and perhaps that will decide you to either read or not read the rest. Chapter 1 concerns the atomic and nuclear era, in particular nuclear testing. This is the section that discusses some quite shameful American treatment of islanders, a shame continuing into the present. It will probably anger some readers. Chapter 2 is more benign, describing the rise of Sony and its famed transistor radio. Chapter 3 may interest readers with little interest in the rest of this book, because it describes the rise of surfing into an international sport.Chapter 4 tells the story of an American officer who used a grease pencil on a map to suggest the 35th parallel as the border of influence between Soviet and American occupations of Korea. This has some wonderful (and quite strongly biased against North Korea) writing about the Koreas and is one of the best chapters. Chapter 5 starts with the burning of the liner Queen Elizabeth in Hong Kong, well past her glory days, and segues into the recession, so to speak, of Hong Kong to China. This has some interesting discussion of European recession from Asia as well, the French and British, especially. Chapter 6 starts with the 1974 typhoon that destroyed Darwin (in Australia) and segues into weather patterns; I really liked this chapter, but readers who do not credit global climate change will be very upset at Winchester's assumptions. It fits with the rest of the book in the sense the Pacific is an ocean but is also connective tissue, connecting the Eastern nations (on the ocean's western rim!) and the Western nations (on its eastern rim!)--we're all in this climate change thing together, this chapter says.Chapter 7 is largely Australia, and I suspect that many US readers will yawn as they read this section, which is too bad. Chapter 8 looks at the submersible Alvin and the discoveries of what have come to be called black smokers and white smokers, hot deep ocean vents. Something that will surprise many readers--it did surprise me--is that these vents offer a wealth of minerals that will soon be mined, the technology is being developed now, and the ecologic and environmental effects may be huge. But who are we Americans, considering all we have done, to tell Asian nations to cool it on this, asks Winchester. This chapter is a bit pessimistic in tone with the sense that the resource is rich and will be exploited because it will make people, some people, rich.Chapter 9 is more strongly environmental, discussing coral bleaching and other problems--reefs, including the Great Barrier Reef, may be gone in this century. But he also has some encouraging counters that give the chapter a sense of, a small sense of, a positive future. The 10th chapter is as noted above mostly about the rising Chinese power.

Pacific: A far vaster ocean than the Atlantic presented in a less coherent book By Merrily Baird Simon Winchester's "Pacific: Silicon Chips and Surfboards, Coral Reefs and Atom Bombs, Brutal Dictators, Fading Empires, and the Coming Collision of the World's Superpowers" signals via its title that this companion book is radically different from the same author's book on the Atlantic Ocean. That earlier study, published in 2010, opened hundreds of million years ago with the formation of the world's oceans and continents, the first movement of ancient man down to life by the seashore, and the early navigation of blue waters. In contrast, as Winchester explains in an author's note, the start line for "Pacific" is 1 January 1950, the dawn of the thermonuclear age and the first of ten events chosen for the subject matter of the book's ten chapters. As is typical in Winchester's books, "Pacific" benefits from fine, and occasionally even poetic, prose. Its organization, however, is more than a bit puzzling, for creating a list of ten events provides no guarantee of thematic relevance. In this case, the book moves back and forth from a concentration on the ocean itself and countries that sometimes just happen to be located in the Pacific basin. In "Atlantic," Winchester's organizing theme was Shakespeare's Seven Ages of Man, which paralleled the book's chronological flow and mankind's progressive mastery of the Atlantic. Less successful is Winchester's use here of the event-driven hook which gives the impression that "Pacific" is a compilation of ten separately conceived and delivered lectures.Chapter 1 addresses the thermonuclear age, but then follow a study of Japan's development of radio technology and the pleasures of a laid-back lifestyle in Hawaii. Chapter 4 returns to a country focus, in this instance the paranoid regime of North Korea. Then it is on to three chapters that look at Hong Kong, long but no-longer a British outpost, storms in southern Pacific climes, and Australia.Chapter 8 deals with deep-sea exploration and the Pacific's volcanoes and plate tectonics, material that plays to Winchester's Oxford University training in geology. Chapter 9 concerns environmental problems, while Chapter 10, the most timely of all in a strategic sense, addresses the dangerous, largely Chinese-driven competition for expanded control of territorial waters. In summing up, my preference would have been to have learned even more about the Pacific as a platform for mineral exploitation and earth science study and as a stage for Law of the Sea issues. Some other readers may instead welcome the greater attention that Winchester pays throughout the book to country studies, and for them "Pacific" as presented may well be a standout achievement.

Johnson Jr. Simon Winchester is a wonderful writer -- an expert user of the English language. I love to read him just for the writing. Beyond that, not so much. This book is a collection of stories or essays about political, scientific, social and ecological issues that touch the Pacific region. E.g., the development of the transistor radio in Japan by what's now called Sony Corp., America's atomic and hydrogen bomb testing, volcanic eruptions, China's increasing interest in control of the South China Sea, the USS Pueblo affair, surfing, how world weather patterns are driven by the Pacific region, and more. Most of this a well-read person of a certain age will already know about, but pick up some interesting details and have a refresher course. However, it's all very superficial, and I kept asking myself, "Is this really right? There must be more to it." And finally, factual errors. I kept thinking, "I need to check that out." Then on pages 424-425 Winchester places Des Moines, Iowa, USA, on the Mississippi River, which it is not, and both Hannibal, Missouri, and Des Moines south of St. Louis, Missouri, which they are not. I did not have to look that up. Don't publishers (Harper, in this case) use fact checkers any more?

Mark struggled at school and became depressed because he was bullied. Ana Maria feared leaving her home after dark due to gun violence. Mario and his family benefited from an intervention to prevent the spread of avian flu in his village. Health problems like these affect not only individuals but also families and communities. These examples suggest how community health is realized in peoples’ lives and affects people living in the same place who share similar beliefs and values. For example, feeling safe within one’s community is an essential part of living a healthy life. The narratives in this book explore a wide range of topics—social ties, gender and sexuality, mental illness, violence, prevention, and health-care access—that shape community health. Featuring “Communities in Action” sketches describing good community health programming as well as a guide for teachers, this book, along with its companions Global Health Narratives: A Reader for Youth and Environmental Health Narratives: A Reader for Youth (UNM Press), provides a comprehensive curriculum that examines people’s health experiences across cultures and nations. ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS Emily Mendenhall is an assistant professor of global health at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this book is a wonderful resource for making interdisciplinary connections with students By Molly Nicol As a middle school English teacher at a magnet school focused on Engineering and Science, this book is a wonderful resource for making interdisciplinary connections with students. I often struggle with how to connect my content area, literacy, to the concepts and issues students are learning in their Science courses, but this anthology provides a unique opportunity to do just that. I also loved that the subject matter of the narratives were so relevant to students' lives. I teach in North Philadelphia and my students and I often examine the issues of poverty as it relates to education inequity. It was wonderful to be able to look through a different lens, that of community health, and for students to be able to make connections between what they are studying in school and not just the world around them, but their immediate community as well.

It is written to inspire empathy for the stories told rather than judgement. A great read for middle/high school students and even college students who are just starting to discover life beyond their bubble. In conjunction with the other two books (Global Health Narratives and Environmental Health Narratives), the series offers real and detailed insight in other peoples' experiences. We are all part of a global community and our experiences have value no matter the person or place.

Parts were about when you are growing up and the struggles with health and violence. It taught me about the problems in health care like human trafficking and how awful it is. There was a kid who was brought from Ecuador to work in an orange grove and a kid is there with his family and sees him missing teeth and with lots of scars and starts a charity to help him. The book made me want to go make the world a better place.

Best source for the lap-band By Sofia I'm still deciding about whether to get the adjustable gastric band but whether I do or not this book has helped. It explained each type of weight loss surgery so now I understand my options. I like it because a lot of the information, like how to choose a surgeon, is useful for all kinds of weight loss surgery, but the book is really about the lap-band so you can learn about special diet tricks and things like adjustments which are only for the band. Here's what I remember about the book so you know what to expect* introduction and why diets don't work* explanation of how the lap-band works and how much weight it can help you lose* some risks of the surgery and the band* how to prepare for surgery by choosing a surgeon* your pre-surgery diet and the diet you'll have when you're recovering from surgery* the diet you'll be following for your new lifestyle* an exercise program (and I want to say that this book takes you right from the beginning, even if you're like I was and you think that getting out of a chair is exercise)* how to use people to support you* a plug for LapBandTalk.com. Actually I checked it out and it's pretty cool. It's free to join. Each chapter has a few short questions or helpful forms to fill out so you keep thinking about your individual situation. Also, there are a bunch of patient stories so you can see how different people make the band work for them. The stories are scattered throughout the book and they're told in the people's own words.

Read as much or as little of it as you want depending on your situation - useful for those considering surgery, preparing for the procedure, recovering or maintaining a new healthy lifestyle. Realistic but encouraging.

I lost 15 pounds before surgery and 30 pounds in the first four months. Then almost nothing. I didn't know what to do. My surgeon just told me that I was at a plateau and I just needed to be patient and wait. I got this book and turned straight to the lap-band diet chapter. Almost immediately I found 3-4 things that I was doing wrong, like eating things that weren't on my diet and having the wrong portion size for some foods. I made the changes and already I've lost another 6 pounds in two weeks! Now I'll read the rest of the book and see what else I can learn! This book is great especially for people like me who don't have a nutritionist and my surgeon doesn't tell me that much about the diet.

What Therapists Say and Why They Say It, 2nd ed, is one of the most practical and flexible textbooks available to counseling students. The new edition includes more than one hundred techniques and more than a thousand specific therapeutic responses that elucidate, in the most concrete possible way, not just why but how to practice good therapy. Transcripts show students how to integrate and develop content during sessions, and practice exercises help learners develop, discuss, combine, and customize various approaches to working with clients.

The second edition is designed specifically for use as a main textbook, and it includes more detailed explanations of both different counseling modalities and the interaction between techniques and the counseling process―for example, the use of Socratic and circular questions within the art therapy process. What Therapists Say and Why They Say It, 2nd ed, is also designed to help students make clear connections between the skills they learn in prepracticum and practicum with other courses in the curriculum―especially the 8 core CACREP areas.
