Winner of the 2014 California Historical Society Book AwardRegional Nonfiction Finalist, Next Generation Indie Book AwardsThe latest CHS Book Award winner examines California's history through the prism of twelve elections that forever changed the state. Drawing from a wealth of primary sources, including new interviews conducted by the authors, each chapter explores one election (Leland Stanford's gubernatorial race, the initiative that mandated term limits, and the Los Angeles Aqueduct Bond Measure, to name a few), revealing the forces behind the choices made at the polls and the consequences that carry over to this day. The authors offer thought-provoking interpretation rooted in decades of experience in journalism, public-policy analysis, and political consulting at the state Capitol. Through their perspectives we better understand the intricate game played in Sacramento by contenders such as the bespectacled and brilliant progressive reformer Hiram Johnson, iconoclastic muckraker-turned-candidate Upton Sinclair, and Proposition 13 author Howard Jarvis, with his zealous oratory and machete approach to tax reform. By focusing on elections, the authors show that Californians' voices are as powerful and transformative as the tectonic forces beneath us.

Game Changers: Twelve Elections That Transformed California, by Steve Swatt, Susie Swatt, Jeff Raimundo, Rebecca LaVally, Foreword by Bruce E. Cain

Review “Highly entertaining and scrupulously researched.” --Ed Goldman, Sacramento Business Journal“The book is full of characters that a fiction writer would be envious of creating, tales of machinations and anecdotes that liven the storytelling. Extensive research and interviews with participants involved in the more modern elections enrich the telling.” --Fox&Hounds“A well-researched and thoroughly engaging source for understanding Sacramento's continuing gridlock, the ballot initiative system, and (sadly) the negative political campaigns still with us.” --Jeff Harter, Blue Heron“This simply is an excellent book an excellent idea, excellently executed. It's compelling, easy reading without airs, telling the pertinent political stories that shaped California.” --George Skelton, political columnist for the Los Angeles Times“A fascinating account of California's political history as viewed through the prism of critical elections from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present....Events and an array of interesting characters spring to life in these pages.” --Jack Citrin, professor of political science and director of the Institute of Governmental Studies, University of California, Berkeley“A compelling analysis of the effect of voting and voters on framing the good, the bad, and the ugly of governance in the Golden State.” --Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, professor of the practice of public policy communication, University of Southern California“Here we get gripping insider portraits of elections that not only served as high political drama, but also changed the historical trajectory of America's most dynamic state.” --Ethan Rarick, author of California Rising: The Life and Times of Pat Brown

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a book on the depth and breadth of California politics that was not only a joy to read By Julie Kanoff Finally, a book on the depth and breadth of California politics that was not only a joy to read, but made me want to know more and inspired me to become more than ever before an advocate for voter engagement. In story after story taken from historical records, the importance of an informed electorate is laid out. Change took place at the polls. Sometimes very few voters made incredibly consequential changes. Reading "Game Changers: Twelve Elections That Transformed California" along with daily reading of the local newspaper could go a long way toward engaging and mobilizing the vast numbers of California residents who neither vote, nor even register to vote. This book proves, every voter counts, if they vote.

By craig brammer The old formula, "can't see the forest for the trees", I plead guilty. 6 of the 12 elections, lived through and sometimes knew something important was happening but never did understand the full dimensions and the intertwined politics before and after. A fascinating and easyl reading description of various elections and how they changed the state.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terrific look at California's path to the present day By Valleyblue If I remember correctly, fourth grade is where I learned California history. Learned may be a bit of an overstatement since I remember few details—not because I’m stupid, at least I hope not—but because the history as it was taught from the history books was about as interesting as a twenty-five pound bag of sand. We studied explorers, settlers, missions, the gold rush, and I’m falling asleep just writing about it. Other than visiting a mission or two over the years and a trip with out-of-town guests to Sutter’s Fort (snore), there’s very little about the heavily sanitized fourth grade history books that seem to relate to life in California today. Those we studied were “great men that did great things.” Yeah, right. As you can see, I never thought California history was very interesting. Isn’t it amazing how one book can change all that? Game Changers was a game changer for my interest in California history. This book should be the model for how history books are written; it’s part textbook, part tell-all expose, and all fascinating. There’s no sterilization in the stories, you hear what happened, warts and all. We learn how California’s legendary figures manipulated the system for personal gain, how Southern California ended up getting Northern California’s water, how the state’s constitution evolved, and a lot more. And it’s all explained by looking at twelve critical and intriguing elections.Game Changers is the first book that I know of that provides an explanation of why California is the way it is today and how we got here. If all history books were written like Game Changers, nobody would be able to get enough of California history. If you’re not a Californian, still read this book because it is really interesting—however, be advised and warned that it will make you very curious about the real story of the particular state in which you live.

Given the many new advances in technology as well as the roll out of the Affordable Care Act, today’s healthcare administrators require a strong foundation in practice-based ethics to confront the challenges of the current healthcare landscape. Ethics in Health Administration, Third Edition translates the principles and practice of ethics into usable information for application to the real world of healthcare administration and the critical issues faced by today’s healthcare administrators. The Third Edition is an extensive revision that addresses the many new ethical challenges administrators will face, in light of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Careful attention is given to the ACA concept of patient-centered care through safety and quality standards. Thoroughly updated chapters throughout as well as a two new chapter on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 and on Public Health, make this text relevant to the issues facing today’s healthcare administrator. Fictional cases based on real-world events help to emphasize chapter content and create interest for the learner. Each chapter includes points to ponder, summary statements, Web sites, and additional resources to further enhance learning. The author’s reader-friendly writing style easily engages students while challenging them to think critically.

There is a flavour of Arthur Conan Doyle is the writing style, which, though set in the modern day, holds the flavour of handsome cabs and gas-lit streets. But beware, the gentle style leads the reader down dark alleyways to even darker secrets. Just what are the Black Pearls, what secret do they hold, and just who - or what - is Neath Pilgrim? Pilgrim and her companion, Henry Baxter, need answers, and time is running out...

The holes are punched very close to the edge of the paper which makes the pages extremely easy to accidentally tear out even whe By Scott This manual comes unbound and 3 hole punched. The holes are punched very close to the edge of the paper which makes the pages extremely easy to accidentally tear out even when carefully turning pages. The holes also eliminate the option of having the pages spiral bound, which would be a great option for this book. No matter the convenience and quality of the book, I need it for class. So I'll suck it up and pay almost $80 for a pack of loose leaf sheets of paper.

For my four hundred level comparative anatomy course I loved this book. The labeled color photos were spot on and pretty easy to follow most of time, however the text gives a fantastic road map to aid in locating small anatomical features. We did the pampered, shark, mudpuppy and cat. The cat was the only I had to use text descriptions to help find some of the more tricky features.Overall, I think it's a great book and it should definitely help with you anatomy knowledge and applications.

What are we teaching our daughters about sex? Our girls are bombarded with sexual messages―at school, through social media, in movies, songs and advertising, and so on. How are we helping them process these messages? At what age should we start talking about sex? How do we protect them in this world of sexting and date rape? Most importantly, how do we empower them to make wise choices about their bodies and learn to take care of themselves in a world that can feel very unsafe? Elizabeth Chapin writes: "The data is pretty consistent―most girls aren't waiting until marriage to have sex. Many aren't even waiting until adulthood! Unfortunately, too many parents don't explicitly talk about sex. Perhaps we're afraid our kids won't listen. Or we won't know what to say. Maybe we're ashamed of something in our past. Or we're paralyzed by our own brokenness because of something terrible that's happened to us. For some of us, our parents never talked about sex and we made all the right choices, so we expect the same outcome for our own girls. Unfortunately, our silence often does more harm than good." This book is designed to inspire and encourage us to have conversations about sex with our girls that will prepare them to make healthy, wise and informed choices. This is not a typical "how to" parenting book. Elizabeth Chapin is a professor and a mom of four who is open about all her missteps as a parent. She shows us how she has been able to offer her girls something more than a set of rules about sex―instead offering them an alternative imagination, a reframing of what Western media culture defines sex to be. If you, like Elizabeth, want to invite your daughters into the bigger story of God's creative goodness in the world, then you will find a refreshing perspective in these pages.

Facing "The Talk": Conversations with My Four Daughters About Sex, by Wendy Elizabeth Chapin

Review "I've had the privilege of serving students alongside Elizabeth for years. I've watched her heart and insightful wisdom impact countless lives. But the greatest honor I have had is to watch her parent her daughters and to see how they've grown into women who know how to respect and honor their body and sex. I know that I will be using this book in my student ministry and in my home." (Neely McQueen, youth worker, author of 99 Things Every Girl Should Know)"A few decades ago, there were lots of books helping parents and others to lead their kids through the labyrinth of teenage sexuality. These were, for the most part, self-help books filled with principles and platitudes. As the culture has increasingly pushed against the tried and true messages and strategies of that era, few voices have kept pace. Into this void Elizabeth Chapin brings a fresh, real take on what it means to walk alongside our daughters through today's sexualized and image-defined culture. Using stories and conversations with her own daughters, Chapin's honesty brings hope and reality to what is ultimately more about a journey than a 'talk.' An uplifting correction to the 'add water and stir' bumper stickers of the past, Facing "The Talk" helps parents to see up close what it means to be in life with their daughters." (Chap Clark, professor of youth, family and culture, Fuller Theological Seminary, author of Hurt 2.0: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers)"Elizabeth Chapin's honest and inviting book demonstrates what it advocates: open, transparent and grace-filled conversations about female embodiment and sex. Chapin's stories of intentional rituals she has practiced with her daughters are grounded in the lavish love of God and told within the context of a loving family and community. She shares her experience, research and counsel with wisdom, humor and humility as she too continues to grow as a daughter of God. A gift well given." (Cherith Fee Nordling, associate professor of theology, Northern Seminary)"Facing "The Talk" is a must-read book for all parents and caregivers of daughters. As a mom, Chapin brings 'The Talk' into the candid arena of everyday life for girls in our hypersexualized, media-drunk culture. Using stories punctuated with the wisdom of her process and the conversation skills she learned helps us to navigate the development of a girl's sexuality together with her faith and family, and not separate from them. Chapin gets extra kudos for not sanitizing the conversation or diminishing the reality that many young girls are sexually exploited by friends and family members." (MaryKate Morse, author, A Guidebook to Prayer)"Facing "The Talk" is a book for moms who operate in the real world. This is not a sterile, how-to instructional book, but rather a humorous, candid, insightful look into the mother-daughter relationship as it pertains to discussions of sexuality and sex. Elizabeth Chapin's stories and reflections give me a friend as I face these conversations with my own girls. Her honesty about her own feelings and fumbles in the process forces me to look at my own stuff and to know I'm not alone in the often clumsy world of sex talks." (Alexandra Kuykendall, specialty content editor, MOPS International, author, The Artist's Daughter)"With grace and humility Elizabeth tells an inspiring story of a mom who set out to intentionally talk with her daughters about sex and sexuality. Facing "The Talk" describes what worked and what didn't as Elizabeth sought to negotiate contemporary culture, Christian faith and adolescent sexuality. Above all, Elizabeth shows us a mother who pays attention, who hopes her daughters make different choices than she did and who will love them no matter what choices they make. I highly recommend Facing "The Talk" to any mother wanting guidance in the challenge of talking to daughters about sex." (Lisa Graham McMinn, author of Growing Strong Daughters)

A Thoughtful, Nuanced and Generous Approach to The Birds and The Bees By Briana Bryant I have been hoping to get around to talking about it here on Amazon for weeks. I was personally skeptical at first - I was wondering what new "ideas" could come out of the Christian sex talk conversations. A little background: Circa the '90s, I remember sitting down with my parents as a fifth grader for an incredibly awkward conversation about sex. I was given a purity ring at the age of 13. I went through '90s Christian purity culture and felt a bit scarred by the approach of youth pastors who told me I was a "ripped flower" or a "cup full of spit" if I chose to have sex before marriage. Now I have kids and I want to someday have a sensitive, kind, and loving conversation with my kids that differs from my own experience in church. This book went along way towards helping me create this conversation.I have to be honest - I read this book straight through in one sitting, and my daughter is only four. Wendy Elizabeth Chapin has hit the nail on the target. With generosity, kindness, and a sense of how difficult the topic is, she manages to weave together various parts of her story, her girls' stories (with their permission) and she provides a helping hand to parents as they navigate those difficult teenage years. I kept thinking that this book would have been a gift to me even as a teenager. She properly analyzes and dismantles the purity pledges of the '90s while graciously acknowledging how important a continued conversation about sex and the choice to not have sex is for Christian teenagers (i.e. she doesn't completely say that purity pledges are "wrong," but points out ways to have this conversation thoughtfully.) Honestly, there were so many parts in this book where I felt incredibly grateful. This book is nuanced, well-researched, and includes bible verses that back up her approach to her teens. It is also fascinating and well-written! Her stories are compelling and allow a peek into real life with teens. She also gives you a window into her and her husband's marriage as they taught, loved and nurtured teenagers. I could not be more grateful or recommend this book more highly. Finally, a book that approaches sex and teens from a Christian perspective with grace for both the teen and the parent!*I received this book from the publisher for review but will also be buying it personally for any of my friends who bring up this topic*

Pseudogout is a type of arthritis that results in sudden swelling in one or more of an individual’s joints, and is accompanied by intense pain. The disease is known to mostly affect the knee joints, thereby causing serious hindrances in the affected person’s day-to-day life. Pseudogout derives its name from ‘gout’ as a result of its similarity to the latter condition. Both the conditions are quite similar with the exception of the crystals that ignite the inflammation. Pseudogout is typically caused by the accumulation of calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate crystals, which develop inside the spaces between joints. It is clearly linked to aging, and elderly people are more prone to developing the disease. Pseudogout can hamper the lives of those who have developed it; hence it is crucial for them and for their caretakers to fully understand the disease and ways of reducing its symptoms. This comprehensive book consists of all the information that one should know when it comes to pseudogout. Some of the highlights of this book are as follows: • A detailed introduction to pseudogout • Treatment and prevention guidelines • Exercise and dietary guidelines • Natural and alternative Remedies • Protecting your joints • Everyday solutions • Highlights of current research, quotes, and tips from experts With the information given in this book, people with pseudogout and their caretakers can lead normal, healthier lives by having better control of their condition and life in general. Don’t let pseudogout bring you down. It’s time to fight it!

Ok advice but often just general health tips By Bookkeeper At times it seemed written for a medical person and not for a layman, but ok most of the time. Some good advice about eating and exercise, though at times it was just general advice like lose weight and eat more fruits and vegetables and walk several times per week. Good advice, but this is good advice for everybody. The only real criticism is that the book became repetitive in spots. Its size easily could be cut in half if the repetition were edited out.

It's chapters are generally shorter than average and they get straight to the point. On the flip side, the book has a few errors that the second addition will have corrected. I wouldn't have known about the problems if it had not been for my microbiology professor pointing them out in his lectures. He happens to be the co-author of the second addition to come.

It didn't explain things as good as science/biology textbooks i used for other classes and the information seemed unorganized. But as far as the Condition of it, it was good.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great revision to an already great book. By Bobby James In his 3rd revised edition, William seems to be more focused and detailed where it matters most. I particularly enjoyed reading the section on barefoot walking, as I had made that exact mistake shortly after getting plantar fasciitis. The logic for barefoot/ minimalist shoes walking makes all the sense in the world for preventing future foot problems, but NOT if you are recently or presently injured. It will likely make matters worse as it did for my foot condition. The links to his videos made a lot of sense as well, as some things are much better explained/ learned thru video rather than text alone. I also like how he addresses your healing happening in phases, and patience being a must. Remember that the crutches (orthotics) are necessary for the injury, but once you're well on your way if not in full recovery, you must begin to wean yourself off of the orthotics, taping, additional support, etc. so that your foot can more fully heal and regain its strength. He also addresses modern mans posture, and work environment/ habits as being culprits in a number of muscoskeletal issues. Everyday there is something coming out now about how sitting all day is ruining your body, and your health, and this is what I have experienced first hand in my own life.Once again the author provides a tremendous amount of value for the money.

I have had PF for 5 years and spend thousands of dollars and countless hours trying to find a solution. He has clear explanations and is easy to understand and follow. I read the first addition of this book and it was the most helpful resource I have found. However, this addition is more organized and had new information that was very helpful. Overall, I have followed his program for 5 months and I am about 90% healed. I wish I could have discovered this book years ago.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The "Third Edition" of Plantar Fasciitis Survival Guide By Wais Amiry The "Third Edition" of Plantar Fasciitis Survival Guide gives us diagrams, which really are new in terms of, "trigger points" that are specially now available in this book. The author makes references to parts of the foot which are overlooked and helpful with other injuries that I have had in the ankle before; that are different than Plantar Fasciitis, but still apply to the general scheme of things relating to where you need to look to solve the problem. The author goes in to explain even the most simple things that are most often reinforced to put pressure how you can prevent long-term damage, and which causes the most damage- essentially the book has many great key elements. Also, many clear methods are pointed out to save your money.....and don't miss out on the vast knowledge this author has right now; and is kind enough to point out for those that did not learn the hard way. I never lost attention as I was interested from start to finish- A must buy for me without a doubt, and the best book I have read in regards to the Plantar Fasciitis.

Early on March 15, 1697, a band of Abenaki warriors in service to the French raided the English frontier village of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Striking swiftly, the Abenaki killed twenty-seven men, women, and children, and took thirteen captives, including thirty-nine-year-old Hannah Duston and her week-old daughter, Martha. A short distance from the village, one of the warriors murdered the squalling infant by dashing her head against a tree. After a forced march of nearly one hundred miles, Duston and two companions were transferred to a smaller band of Abenaki, who camped on a tiny island located at the junction of the Merrimack and Contoocook Rivers, several miles north of present day Concord, New Hampshire. This was the height of King William’s War, both a war of terror and a religious contest, with English Protestantism vying for control of the New World with French Catholicism. After witnessing her infant’s murder, Duston resolved to get even. Two weeks into their captivity, Duston and her companions, a fifty-one-year-old woman and a twelve-year-old boy, moved among the sleeping Abenaki with tomahawks and knives, killing two men, two women, and six children. After returning to the bloody scene alone to scalp their victims, Duston and the others escaped down the Merrimack River in a stolen canoe. They braved treacherous waters and the constant threat of attack and recapture, returning to tell their story and collect a bounty for the scalps. Was Hannah Duston the prototypical feminist avenger, or the harbinger of the Native American genocide? In this meticulously researched and riveting narrative, bestselling author Jay Atkinson sheds new light on the early struggle for North America.

Massacre on the Merrimack: Hannah Duston's Captivity and Revenge in Colonial America, by Jay Atkinson

Review A strong sense of place and vivid narration underscore journalist Atkinson’s tale of war, survival, and murder in colonial Massachusetts. . . .Atkinson’s storytelling skills are superb; he crisply moves from events in Haverhill across the panorama of colonial rivalries in North America to Hannah’s captivity experiences. (Publishers Weekly)A woman's life in dangerous times. In 1697, Hannah Duston, a Haverhill, Massachusetts, wife and mother, was abducted by Abenaki Indians and forcibly marched north toward French-occupied Canada to be ransomed. Her week-old infant was brutally murdered during the march, other captives were beaten to death, and the survivors were starved and abused. Desperate, Duston managed to take revenge, slaying not only her captors, but squaws and children, as well, hacking off scalps for monetary reward. Journalist and fiction writer Atkinson narrates Duston's story in gory detail, aiming to convey 'the moral truth of what happened' and allow readers to judge whether Duston's act of savagery was justified. . . .Drawing on archival documents and contemporary and recent histories, Atkinson has written a compelling narrative. (Kirkus Reviews)"Jay Atkinson is one of my favorite writers, and Massacre on the Merrimack, detailing an important yet little-known episode of captivity and revenge in colonial-era Massachusetts, benefits from his accomplished writing and keen-eyed historical perspective." -- Chuck Hogan, author of The Town“In this superb book, Massacre on the Merrimack, Jay Atkinson tells two stories: First, the dramatic tale of a young woman, Hannah Duston, who is abducted by Abenaki tribesmen and force-marched across a hundred miles of frozen wilderness, before fighting her way free. That alone is a dramatic tale of heroism, savagery, and survival against overwhelming odds. Simultaneously, Atkinson elucidates the bloody fight for the land we now inhabit, once known as the New World, now America. French and English imperialists, Jesuit missionaries, as well as rival Indian tribes—the Mohawk, the Abenaki and the Iroquois among them—were fighting, killing, scalping, and massacring for the right to call "New England" home. This is the rare book that succeeds in telling both as a useful and succinct history, and as an intimately narrated story of a young woman fighting, successfully for her life, and for the lives of her friends and family members. There is a statue of Hannah Duston in Massachusetts, and now there is this wonderful book—a fitting memorial to an extraordinary woman, whose story is finally, and brilliantly, told here.” —Alex Beam, Boston Globe columnist and author of American Crucifixion: The Murder of Joseph Smith and the Fate of the Mormon Church“Massacre on the Merrimack is colonial history told as a thriller. The writer’s research and craftsmanship are stamped throughout the book. It's an engaging story, and you will want to savor every page. It also makes a terrific gift for young students of American history, as it depicts history the way it really happened.” –Lou Ureneck, author of The Great Fire“Jay Atkinson has written a gripping account of the brutal struggles in seventeenth-century New England and Canada among British and French immigrants and various resident Native American tribes. He makes the shifting alliances comprehensible and conveys in vivid prose the desperate motives and aspirations of each group. This book portrays the sad and bloody shadow side of our perennial American Thanksgiving Day myth of happy camaraderie among European settlers and their native hosts. Anyone interested in the earliest origins of the United States will want to read this dreadful tale of greed, violence—and amazing courage on all sides.” —Lisa Alther, author of Blood Feud“Resurrecting one of the most fascinating and horrific stories of colonial America, Jay Atkinson delivers a riveting and thrilling narrative of savagery, murder, and revenge. His elegant prose animates the drama, allowing readers to experience not only the terror and visceral anger that Hannah Duston felt while being held captive, but also her sense of relief upon brutally killing her tormentors and returning home. Atkinson also provides a nuanced perspective on the deeply troubling relationship between whites and Indians during the early years of the American experience. This book is an excellent read.” —Eric Jay Dolin, author of Leviathan and Fur, Fortune, and Empire

Atkinson plunges you into the cold water of the Merrimack river, makes you feel like brushing the snow from your shoulders, and marches you alongside the Indians into a world of wilderness now forever lost. Lost that is — except on Atkinson’s pages. He writes English prose like a master, and his canvas is as colorful as a mural. Painting the big picture of colonial America, when the French and the English struggled for dominance and Indians were used as mercenaries, Atkinson zooms in for the close-up on Hannah -- his steadfast heroine, giving you the thrill of intimacy with her iron will and unforgettable deeds. The author then pulls back for the establishing shots of what made the circumstances of her tragedy possible. Caught in the center of a triangle of warfare between French Catholics, English Puritans, and displaced Indians, Hannah Duston’s story becomes their nexus, that place where the forces of history find expression in a single human lifetime, one representing the terrible collision of native and European cultures. Atkinson’s background as a novelist is on full display here and his sensual images jolt history into hot, breathing life — without invention; indeed, the transparency of his work runs as clear as ice-water, and that is the clearest lens we’re ever going to get to peer through at this one-of a kind spectacle, this unique biography, not only of a woman, but of America. Massacre on the Merrimack is an important, beautiful book, and we’re extremely lucky to have it.

It gives and excellent view of life both with the colonists and the native tribes in addition to the fascinating story of Hannah Duston. It also makes one wonder if todays Americans could endure a life that was so harsh, demanding and fraught with constant danger every day.

In Massacre on the Merrimack, author Jay Atkinson has created a gripping narrative of a time in colonial American history oft-forgotten, when early English settlers struggled to live sparsely on the land of New England, and only one hard winter or bad harvest separated them from disaster. In the period chronicled here (roughly, the 1680s until Hannah Duston's story in the spring of 1697), the colonists are part of a much bigger conflict between England and France, played out between colonies in New England and Quebec, with local Indians (already in steep decline due to disease and conflict with colonists) struggling to maintain their respective advantages, and siding with European powers when it suited them. The star of the book is Hannah Duston, of course, but some of the other narratives of Hannah's peers told in this book are just as gripping (and many much darker). Living on the frontier -- as Haverhill, Massachusetts, was in those days -- was risky business. Massacre opens with the harrowing, bloody raid that started Hannah on her journey and left close to 10% of Haverhill's population dead in a matter of minutes. As he draws the broader picture, Atkinson makes clear that this raid was hardly an isolated event; it was a fact of life for those early settlers. In the modern age, there's some controversy about the actions Hannah took to secure her freedom, and whether they were all justified. Atkinson doesn't opine on this, but he does make an effort, as far as the source material will allow, to tell the story with a more even-handed sensibility than earlier accounts may have had. Whatever your opinion on Hannah's actions, you'll find it hard not to be invested in her story as it unfolds and resolves in epic fashion.Once I started reading this, I found it hard to put down -- even the copious notes that follow the main text make for fascinating reading. For anyone with even a mild interest in early American history (or an interest in screenworthy survival stories), I'd unreservedly recommend this.My sole criticism of the book (a mild one) is that I would have enjoyed an epilogue looking at how Hannah's story came back into prominence in the 19th century, leading to her being (supposedly) the first woman in American history to be honored with a statue -- the statue that inspired the author to write the book. Judging from what I've been able to find on the Internet, that's a pretty interesting story, too. Finally, for anyone interested in a broader view of this period, I'd recommend Alan Taylor's American Colonies: The Settling of North America, Vol. 1, which does a great job of looking at the colonial period (and not just through the English-speaking perspective). I read this a few years ago, and found it as gripping (in parts) as Atkinson's book.
