Angie shines a light on a serious problem facing our senior community By Mark LeBlanc Angie Stone does an excellent job uncovering and educating her readers on a very serious problem facing our elderly. This is a must-read and must-share book with professionals in dentistry, and long term care. This book will save lives and improve the quality of life in the final chapter for your loved ones.

Critically Important Knowledge By Sally Flesch, Ph.D., R.N Ms. Stone's insightful commentary has a critically important knowledge base that we all must disseminate to care givers to improve patient care. Pneumonia has been the bane of older adults for generations and now we have one explanation that is preventable. She is also accurate with her observations of nurses, nursing assistants, and their educational programs. Attitudes as well as skills are taught. Professions traditionally dominated by women are still struggling for recognition and respect and sometimes those issues get in the way of excellent patient care. My hope is that the new ideas in this book will be accepted and utilized. This can really make a difference. As the population ages and the baby boomers grow old with their natural teeth, maintenance of good health certainly includes oral hygiene! Let's work together on this.

He wonders why at the age of 54 he was hospitalized for pneumonia right before Christmas 2014. Could be he had not received professional cleaning for 13 years before he finally made it to my office for Scaling and Root Planing in 2010? Then when I left this office he did not do his continuing care in a timely manner. The last recare was in 2013... if this is happening to our able bodied patients who can care for themselves... what can and will happen to our most vulnerable aging population.Thank you for speaking on preventive measures that in the long run can help our elders, they have contributed to so much, their needs do not need to be ignored!

As a young Florentine envoy to the courts of France and the Italian principalities, Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) was able to observe firsthand the lives of people strongly united under one powerful ruler. His fascination with that political rarity and his intense desire to see the Medici family assume a similar role in Italy provided the foundation for his "primer for princes." In this classic guide to acquiring and maintaining political power, Machiavelli used a rational approach to advise prospective rulers, developing logical arguments and alternatives for a number of potential problems, among them governing hereditary monarchies, dealing with colonies and the treatment of conquered peoples. Refreshing in its directness, yet often disturbing in its cold practicality, The Prince sets down a frighteningly pragmatic formula for political fortune. Starkly relevant to the political upheavals of the 20th century, this calculating prescription for power remains today, nearly 500 years after it was written, a timely and startling lesson in the practice of autocratic rule that continues to be much read and studied by students, scholars and general readers as well. Particularity of this edition: - Complete work: 26 Chapters of the book - Table of Contents - Annotations from Wikipedia

The Prince (Inti Classics): by Niccolò Machiavelli, by Niccolò Machiavelli

Amazon.com Review When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the Florentine Republic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the Second Chancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in the way we think about politics. The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccolò Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a little imagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-century principality and a 20th-century presidency. --Tim Hogan

Review “[Machiavelli] can still engage our attention with remarkable immediacy, and this cannot be explained solely by the appeal of his ironic observations on human behaviour. Perhaps the most important thing is the way he can compel us to reflect on our own priorities and the reasoning behind them; it is this intrusion into our own defenses that makes reading him an intriguing experience. As a scientific exponent of the political art Machiavelli may have had few followers; it is as a provocative rhetorician that he has had his real impact on history.” –from the Introduction by Dominic Baker-Smith

Smith There are two good reasons to read Machiavelli's classic, "The Prince."First, so you'll know what everyone is referring to when you come across the adjective "machiavellian" in news stories or other media. This adjective has become so commonplace (and overused) it is almost a cliche. Also, most who use it have never read this letter from Machiavelli, a Rennaisance courtier to his Prince (written from prison), but they insist on peppering writings with this noun turned adjective so much that as a matter of clearly understanding what is meant by the term, famiality with this brief treatise is helpful.Second, this book does describe most (not all) power situations very well. From politics to corporations to most settings where advancement, influence and control exist, Machiavelli's observations and rules apply. You will also discover that Machiavelli was not as evil as he is understood to be in popular thought. What he was doing was describing the rules of the game that have existed and always will exist for many situations involving selfish humans in competition. Machiavelli's rules are neither good nor bad in themselves -- they describe a process. What is good or bad is how those who master Machiavelli's rules use their power and position, in a society that tempers actions according to law and basic Judeo-Christian principals. When those principals do not exist (as in Nazi Germany, the Middle Ages or under Communism, or by those who refuse to live by these constraints), Machiavelli's rules take on their demonic and evil cloak; usually because they serve demonic and evil ends. In societies where positive constraints exist, for example the U.S. political system, Machiavellian behavior can produce excellent results. A good example involves Abraham Lincoln, whose ambition led him to use every legitimate trick and stragety to master (and remove) political opponents. His mastery of Machiavellian behavior constrained by the US political system allowed him to save the Union and end slavery. To fully appreciate the modern lessons that can be taken from this writing, one must translate Medieval sensibilites to their contemporary counterparts. The casual way in which Machiavelli discusses the need to kill opponents was necessary to those who wished to be princes 500 years ago. Today, of course, "killing" is translated as rendering less powerful, or taking an opponent out of the game. What does one get from this book? It is a roadmap with insights and lessons about how to 1) get ahead of others to attain power; and 2) maintain and expand one's power in the face of others who would usurp one who is in a desirable position. This book is about ruthlessness and putting the attainment of goals ahead of any other consideration. Plenty of maxims that are also tossed about frequently in media are to be found in Machiavelli's book: "the end justifies the means," "it is better to be feared than loved," "if you fight the prince, kill the prince" to name a few.It is essential reading to anyone who would be in a competitive environment and hope to advance, if for no other reason than many of one's competitors operate by Machiavelli's dictums (which arise out of human instinct and selfishness). One does not have to operate according to Machaivelli's code -- many examples of alturism and "pluck and luck" exist to defeat any claim that Machiavelli's road map is essential for success. However, human nature and human history deliver far more examples of ruthless self-interest (Machiavellianism) behind success in power situations. Is Machiavellianism bad? Not in and of itself. Remember, one must translate the Middle Age ethos to current practices -- there usually isn't blood spilled as a result of today's Machiavellian duels, just power and positon. Most political and business leaders are at least partly Machiavellian. The trick is using one's power to good ends. Thus, even though Lincoln and all of our presidents were Machiavellian in their climb to the White House, some of them did darn good work there. The same is true for business leaders. Jack Welch (GE), Bill Gates (Microsoft), anyone who advances past the first few rungs of the corporate ladder or dominates markets at the expense of competitors is using Machiavelli's dictums. The trick of a just and good society is to set the bounds by which power can be attained and exercised so that good and benefits will flow from those who are able to "claw their way to the top."To summarize, read this book if you want to 1) truly understand when the adjective "Machiavelli" is used to describe people and 2) understand the rules by which most people navigate their way to power.

Peter Bondanella's translation is wonderfully readable, capturing both the cadence and elegant simplicity of Machiavelli. Bondanella has updated his previous translation of 'The Prince' (with Mark Musa), which can be found in the previous Oxford edition and in the Viking Portable Machiavelli. The introduction by Maurizio Viroli is a pleasant new feature. The introduction covers all of the basic points necessary for anyone new to Machiavelli, while including some of Viroli's own ideas about Machiavelli's use of contemporary principles of rhetoric. For a more detailed introduction to Machiavelli you may also want to try the paperback edition of Viroli's book Machiavelli (Founders of Modern Political and Social Thought), although the price is quite high for an introduction. Two excellent and inexpensive introductions are Quentin Skinner's "Machiavelli: A Very Short Introduction" (Oxford) and Cary Nederman's "Machiavelli: A Beginner's Guide"(Oneworld), both of which cover more than just 'The Prince'. Finally, the low price makes this edition a great value.UPDATE 11/19/2011: MORE DETAILAfter having worked with this edition for a few years now, I feel the need to adjust my initial review in one way. The translation is not exactly the same as the one provided in 'The Portable Machiavelli' The Portable Machiavelli. 'The Portable Machiavelli' translation is based on the older edition done by Mark Musa, which Peter Bondanella contribute to as well. However, the Oxford World's Classics edition listed above is done solely by Bondanella. Bondanella claims that "This new version of The Prince aims at accuracy but also at a more pleasing and readable English prose style than is possible if a translation respects Machiavelli's word order too closely." (p. xl)Presumably, this reference to strict adherence to word order is directed towards the older Mark Musa translation. Having worked with both alongside the Italian offered in an older edition (Machiavelli's The Prince: A Bilingual Edition), the Bondanella translation fulfills its stated objective well. Bondanella accomplishes this by breaking up some longer sentences into separate shorter sentences. The translations are substantively similar. Here's a comparison of how the two translations and original Italian present a well-known passage:Peter Bondanella, Oxford World's Classics"I therefore conclude that, since Fortune varies and men remain obstinate in their ways, men prosper when the two are in harmony and fail to prosper when they are not in accord. I certainly believe this: that it is better to be impetuous than cautious because Fortune is a woman, and if you want to keep her under it is necessary to beat her and force her down. It is clear that she more often allows herself to be won over by impetuous men than by those who proceed coldly. And so, like a woman, Fortune is always the friend of young men, for they are less cautious, more ferocious, and command her with more audacity." (p. 87)Mark Musa and Peter Bondanella, The Portable Machiavelli"I conclude, therefore, that since Fortune changes and men remain set in their ways, men will succeed when the two are in harmony and fail when they are not in accord. I am certainly convinced of this: that it is better to be impetuous than cautious, because Fortune is a woman, and it is necessary, in order to keep her down, to beat her and to struggle with her. And it is seen that she more often allows herself to be taken over by men who are impetuous than by those who make cold advances; and then, being a woman, she is always a friend of the young men, for they are less cautious, more aggressive, and they command her with more audacity." (p. 214)I hope this is helpful and I'm sorry I couldn't say all this more quickly.

By John Russon Machiavelli was a moderately significant figure in Renaissance Florence at the time that city was busy shaping the essence of the modern world. His works (all of them, but especially the Prince) capture much of what is pivotal in this culture. The book is advice to princes on how to seize and hold power. Mostly, that means you need to trick people and use ruthless violence intelligently. (He suggests that, if you could invent something like the Catholic Church, you'd be in a specially good position to set up a rule that would draw a lot of allegiance and a lot of taxes, would have no responsibilities, and would never end.) It's great reading as literature and as history, and also incredibly subtle and insightful as an analysis of human psychology. Mostly, this work praises cunning intelligence; it is also written for the reader who possesses the same. Consequently, it is a book that requires real patience and attention if its real treasures are to be found. Mansfield's translation is, I believe, the best for allowing one to look for the inner depth of the book. The translation is inspired by the work of Leo Strauss, and, as is typical of Straussian translations, it is a translation that is extremely careful to reflect the subtleties of the language of the original in order to retain their complex intimations etc. This is the translation I use when I teach the book because of its precision and elegance. It also has helpful historical notes that provide some of the essential context that is necessary to understanding Machiavelli's words; (Machiavelli often, for example, describes some historical figure in a fashion which will suggest the opposite of his true point to the reader who does not take the trouble to learn the details of the context he is referring to, and Mansfield is helpful in supplying guides to the modern reader for what to study in order to get past these textual deceptions). Overall, this is an outstanding translation of one of the great books of Western culture. I recommend it highly.

By Richard Gruver Although written in Canadian English, this publication is a beautifully worded resource for explaining observable phenomena, whether it's rainbows, eclipses or nebulae, etc. I love this book, and I especially look forward to next year's edition (2017), which will include details about the Great American Eclipse of August 21st.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Gloria Steinem—writer, activist, organizer, and inspiring leader—tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of her life as a traveler, a listener, and a catalyst for change.ONE OF O: THE OPRAH MAGAZINE’S TEN FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR | NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Harper’s Bazaar • St. Louis Post-Dispatch • Publishers Weekly When people ask me why I still have hope and energy after all these years, I always say: Because I travel. Taking to the road—by which I mean letting the road take you—changed who I thought I was. The road is messy in the way that real life is messy. It leads us out of denial and into reality, out of theory and into practice, out of caution and into action, out of statistics and into stories—in short, out of our heads and into our hearts. Gloria Steinem had an itinerant childhood. When she was a young girl, her father would pack the family in the car every fall and drive across country searching for adventure and trying to make a living. The seeds were planted: Gloria realized that growing up didn’t have to mean settling down. And so began a lifetime of travel, of activism and leadership, of listening to people whose voices and ideas would inspire change and revolution. My Life on the Road is the moving, funny, and profound story of Gloria’s growth and also the growth of a revolutionary movement for equality—and the story of how surprising encounters on the road shaped both. From her first experience of social activism among women in India to her work as a journalist in the 1960s; from the whirlwind of political campaigns to the founding of Ms. magazine; from the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference to her travels through Indian Country—a lifetime spent on the road allowed Gloria to listen and connect deeply with people, to understand that context is everything, and to become part of a movement that would change the world. In prose that is revealing and rich, Gloria reminds us that living in an open, observant, and “on the road” state of mind can make a difference in how we learn, what we do, and how we understand each other.Praise for My Life on the Road“This legendary feminist makes a compelling case for traveling as listening: a way of letting strangers’ stories flow, as she puts it, ‘out of our heads and into our hearts.’”—People“Like Steinem herself, [My Life on the Road] is thoughtful and astonishingly humble. It is also filled with a sense of the momentous while offering deeply personal insights into what shaped her.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “A lyrical meditation on restlessness and the quest for equity . . . Part of the appeal of My Life is how Steinem, with evocative, melodic prose, conveys the air of discovery and wonder she felt during so many of her journeys. . . . The lessons imparted in Life on the Road offer more than a reminiscence. They are a beacon of hope for the future.”—USA Today “A warmly companionable look back at nearly five decades as itinerant feminist organizer and standard-bearer. If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to sit down with Ms. Steinem for a casual dinner, this disarmingly intimate book gives a pretty good idea, mixing hard-won pragmatic lessons with more inspirational insights.”—The New York Times “Steinem rocks. My Life on the Road abounds with fresh insights and is as populist as can be.”—The Boston Globe

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of November 2015: To women “of a certain age” – a euphemism the author of this book would surely abhor – the idea that Gloria Steinem is a revolutionary thinker, a wonderful writer and a practical activist is not, perhaps, news. (But there is something joyful in the rediscovery of same.) To those who didn’t know or don’t remember the Steinem story – founding Ms. Magazine, fighting for reproductive rights, waiting to marry until she was in her 60s! -- it might be a revelation. Long before Sheryl Sandberg leaned in at work, Steinem was preaching the gospel of empowered women by, among other things, travelling the country and the world listening to people, gathering stories and insights, offering support of the intellectual and emotional kind. From the very first page – in which she dedicates her book to the British doctor who ended Steinem’s pregnancy, illegally, in 1957 – to the tales of a supposedly shy woman who admitted she wanted to nail their sloppy husband’s tossed-anywhere underwear to the floor, Steinem recounts a life well-travelled in every sense. Now 81, the woman who at 40 replied to a compliment about her appearance with “this is what 40 looks like,” Steinem can still raise consciousnesses, including her own. – Sara Nelson

Review “This legendary feminist makes a compelling case for traveling as listening: a way of letting strangers’ stories flow, as she puts it, ‘out of our heads and into our hearts.’”—People“Like Steinem herself, [My Life on the Road] is thoughtful and astonishingly humble. It is also filled with a sense of the momentous while offering deeply personal insights into what shaped her.”—O: The Oprah Magazine   “[Steinem’s] new book is a lyrical meditation on restlessness and the quest for equity that has taken her from the women-only rail cars of India to myriad university campuses where she has helped generations of women and men rally their collective voices. . . . Part of the appeal of My Life is how Steinem, with evocative, melodic prose, conveys the air of discovery and wonder she felt during so many of her journeys. . . . Whatever one’s politics, such candor draws you in. And as the country continues to struggle with painful questions about race relations, reproductive rights and the plight of immigrants, the lessons imparted in Life on the Road offer more than a reminiscence. They are a beacon of hope for the future.”—USA Today   “My Life on the Road, Ms. Steinem’s first book in more than twenty years, is a warmly companionable look back at nearly five decades as itinerant feminist organizer and standard-bearer. If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to sit down with Ms. Steinem for a casual dinner, this disarmingly intimate book gives a pretty good idea, mixing hard-won pragmatic lessons with more inspirational insights.”—The New York Times   “Steinem beautifully illustrates how her perpetual motion has shaped her professional life. . . . [She] has gained wisdom from cabdrivers and fellow airplane passengers, and gotten story tips from strangers at rural diners and truck stops. . . . Steinem’s life has been so remarkable that her memoir would have been fascinating even without a central theme, but her decision to use travel as a thematic thread was a smart one.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)   “Steinem rocks. My Life on the Road abounds with fresh insights and is as populist as can be. . . . Honoring its title, My Life on the Road ranges around subject-wise. One minute Steinem is writing about stewardesses on the shuttle, the next women who taught Gandhi. Now she’s railing against Betty Friedan, whose focus on white middle-class feminism Steinem argues damaged the movement. Still later she’s celebrating her friendships with Native American women, whom she sees as guides into the future. . . . Go, Steinemite!”—The Boston Globe   “In person and in her writing, Steinem exudes a rare combination of calm, humility and honesty about her weaknesses that explains all she has accomplished and why she’s become the figurehead she has. . . . Her secret appears to be a surprising willingness to be open to learning from her incredibly varied audiences. . . . [This is] a memoir—but really, it’s a lens through which to see a great many people, a vessel for their stories, a mouthpiece to share them.”—Jezebel“It’s amazing to have a lifelong heroine who is also one of my favorite writers. Gloria Steinem is a deeply revolutionary woman. She steered us through the contentious years of the women’s movement without losing her humanity or her wonderful sense of humor. She changed America in a fundamental way without being damaged by it or losing her joy. My Life on the Road is filled with beautifully told stories of the people she has spoken with and listened to, been changed by, helped organize, got radicalized by, could get lost in, could get found in. It is soul material, human and political, funny and touching, deeply spiritual. I began it again the day after I finished.”—Anne Lamott  “Rarely do women have the opportunity to travel as Steinem has done—living a life full of radical adventure. Everywhere she goes, she carries with her the vitality of democracy, of freedom for women and men, and her profound love of justice. Now she offers us the good fortune of journeying with her. My Life on the Road is an inspiring work, a call for action. Steinem shares her life as a global freedom fighter, inviting readers to continue the journey—and the struggle.”—bell hooks “My Life on the Road is a personal, beautiful look at the deceptively radical act of travel and how it formed one of our most important voices for human rights. By delving deeper into her own thrilling story, Steinem shows us that we all have a fighter inside us—we need only pack our bags and follow her.”—Lena Dunham“Countless times, I had to put Gloria Steinem’s new book down and allow an explosive truth she had just revealed to roll through me. And they all arrived—page after page—in the most personal, unexpected ways. I won’t be the same person after having read My Life on the Road.”—Jane Fonda  “Gloria Steinem’s new book is a lightning rod to the head and heart: stimulating, no, shocking us to get up out of our easy chairs and do something meaningful with our lives—to hit the road. Women will read My Life on the Road, but men must.”—James Patterson “Gloria Steinem’s lightness of being combined with her complete seriousness, her love for words and her call for actions, remind us to celebrate her as one of the most important women of our time.”—Diane von Furstenberg

Lovely journey with a vanguard of modern feminism By Quickbeam I taught women's studies for years so I am very familiar with Steinem's work and life. Even so, this book surprised me with its warmth and insight. It is not a biography but more of a road journal. It is not crafted by chronology but by memory and thought stream. I found it very engaging and moving. The opening dedication was heart rending for those of us who lived in those years.Steinem is the half generation between me and my mother. In the late 60's as my mother was ironing we were watching TV. The women's movement was considered radical fringe, even to my mother's peers who had built planes and careers during WWII only to be sent home afterwards. My mother watched Steinem on TV and said "she is so brave". I asked why and she said "she is so beautiful she could have had an easy life. She has chosen a hard road. It will make your life better". The absurd in the 1960s is now law of the land. It is with that in mind I read this book and appreciated the context of her travels and impact. This is a fast conversation of a book, not a polemic. I loved it and I hope it finds a wide audience.

Samuelson In My Life on the Road, Gloria Steinem, an iconic figure of American culture, tells the story of her life spent "listening to people, learning and creating change." The book is more a memoir than an autobiography. It brims with anecdotes and encounters with people ranging from the poor and disenfranchised to the rich and powerful. She tells what she learned from each encounter and experience. Her life as an organizer, feminist, political campaigner and journalist inspires, enriches and enlightens the reader about the way we think about racial and gender equality.Although I've heard and read about Steinem since the 1960s, I knew little about her until reading this memoir. Her tenure began with Adlai Stevenson's presedential campaign, continued thorugh the Vietnam War era and the fight to pass the Equal Rights Amendment and has lasted clear up to Obama's election and the present day. Wow! I was awed not only by her longevity but also by her wit, understanding, compassion, and intelligence. Although the book is somewhat haphazard in its organization, it brims with the wisdom of someone who tried to do right by the world by understanding it and the people who inhabit it. Gloria has strived her whole life to bring people together to accomplish justice and equality for all. She felt that "each person's shared humanity and individual uniqueness far out weigh any label by group of birth, whether sex, race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, relgious heritage or anything else." A book like this that forces you to think and examine your own life and accomplishments deserves nothing less than a five. Thank you Gloria Steinem for sharing your quest.

Suited for men as well as women By Connie Twenty years ago I read one of Gloria Steinem's earlier books, "Outrageous Acts" and immediately connected with her. Her name has often been used in a derogatory way. Male co-workers would call me "Gloria" so naturally I had to know more about this woman I was associated with. Just like in her "Outrageous Acts" book, Gloria makes many truthful observations. And just like "Outrageous Acts," she does not get bitter or violent in her verbiage. I never took being called "Gloria!" as an insult. This book is a little bit of everything: part memoir, part philosophy of feminism, part tribute to the friends and mentors she has lost along the way, part history of the Feminist Movement. Here she focuses on the things that have influenced her: her father, her early years in India, becoming close to women in the Civil Rights era, other feminists in the movement of the 1970s, the Vietnam War and its protesters, the opening of biracial relationships. In many ways she is also describing the change in American society during her own formative and young adult years. And she got caught up in it all and became a reluctant speaker for a cause she believes in to this day: equal pay and equal treatment for all women, and easy access to birth control to all women regardless of class.I fear the youngest generation of women don't care much for feminism, but perhaps it's because our ethnic groups of Chinese and Mexicans are joining the ranks and bringing with them a very ingrained patriarchal society. This book is not just addressed to them, however, but to women and men everywhere. Her narrative style hasn't changed much since her early book. She writes with deep reflection and sensitivity. Even men who have done great wrongs are not described as misogynistic pigs, but rather as victims of their own masculinity. She has never been about "hating men" (there are other much more radical feminists who fit that description) but all about equality for women. Why is that so difficult to achieve, especially when equality for women also means more freedoms for men.Gloria is now 80 years old and still so full of vigor and energy. She has lived a life of few regrets. This book is aimed at all people who want to see equality among the genders. Men should pick this book up and read it, too. It may just open the mind a bit more.

If it weren’t for her best friends, Zoey and Maya, Addy Hart would be a prudish, uptight Barbie doll. Thankfully, through love and persistence, they’ve helped introduce her to her wild side. Unfortunately, even her wild side doesn’t have the courage to go after the one thing she wants more than life itself. Dr. Greyson McDaniel has resisted his lovely teaching assistant for three years, now. He has no intentions of endangering his job or her reputation. But as spring break approaches, he’s seized with a wicked impulse. He invites her to his mountain retreat for a week. Just one week of intense escape. What they both discover after their affair is that a week isn’t nearly enough. But as much as they long to be together, there are obstacles in their way, and the ethics of student-teacher relationships are the least of their problems. When she realizes how deeply rooted Grey’s commitment issues are, Addy begins to despair of ever having a happy ending with him. But Addy’s love might be just what’s needed to free him of his past.

She has always done things the way she was taught and never let loose or broken any rules. Her head tells her to be practical and ignore the growing feelings she has for her professor, Dr. Greyson McDaniel, but her heart is urging her to take a leap of faith. When she is presented with an opportunity to escape to a secluded cabin with Greyson, she decides to step out of her comfort zone just this once and live life on the edge. After all, what could possibly happen by breaking the rules just once? Addy and Grey are both about to find out.I really enjoyed Addy’s character. She reminded me of myself in some aspects, especially when she misses out on opportunities due to her lack of courage to go against the rules or do something uncomfortable. This made her easy to relate to and I found myself encouraging her to embrace the unknown. The sexual chemistry between Addy and Grey was super steamy! They had no problems in that department and yet they both found themselves struggling with wanting more. Addy wants some sort of commitment and Grey isn’t the commitment type. As their affair is brought to light, they are tested in several ways and they grow; both as individuals and as a couple.I liked the author’s writing style and the flow of the story kept me turning the pages. I also enjoyed being introduced to Maya and Zoey, Addy’s friends, as I haven’t read the first two books in this series. That said, it in no way hindered me and I feel as though these books are standalone. I will be picking up the first two as I’m curious to learn more about those characters.I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is for mature audiences only due to sexual content.

For the last 3 years, she's been his teaching assistant and has always played by the rules, not giving into her feelings for the professor. They have fought off their mutual attraction. Addy has stood by and watched Grey date other women. Finally, they can't find their feelings anymore and Grey invites Addy to come to his cabin in North Carolina for a week - somewhere that nobody knows them and they can be together for a whole week and get it out of their system. The thing is, when the week is up, they both realize that one week together is never going to be enough. I have been really looking forward to Addy's story since the first book in this series and it did not disappoint. Grey really has some issues and I think Addy was a little too patient with him but I still loved this story. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows between them, Grey made some really questionable decisions that I hated but it felt real. I really enjoyed the banter between Addy and Grey and also the supporting characters from the previous books. My only complaints - 1. I REALLY wanted an epilogue 2. Grey really made me mad quite a few times - he was my least favorite hero of the 3 books. That being said, I still really loved this book and this entire series and I highly recommend it!

By Shane Morgan I didn't read the first two books so I'm not sure what Addy's character was like prior to this one, and according to the blurb she's just now starting to loosen up. However, I liked her personality and how she found the courage to put her feelings out in the open. Although, anyone could see she felt so strongly for Greyson. Even he could but he chose to stay in denial. This book! It really sent me on an emotional roller-coaster. There were times (many) that I wanted to slap Greyson for the things he'd say or what he'd put Addy through. I mean, what the hell, she'd sacrificed so much for him and he was too afraid to just commit to her. I get that the situation is sticky, with him being a teacher and she a student, and I could sympathize with what he's been through with his family, but obviously he can trust Addy not to hurt him like that.Grey's inability to be honest with himself caused Addy pain, because while she had a hard time detaching her heart from him, he was going about with other women. Like what the hell! His behavior aggravated me a lot. But you know what, I liked the story. I liked Addy and her relationship with her best friends, and I liked the other guys. It's a sweet, and often times sour story that isn't far-fetched from what some people in this age group go through in real life.Loved the writing and how the author brought these characters to life, each with their own interesting addition to the plot. Also, I liked how things wrapped up in the end. It certainly was a long time coming and I felt emotionally drained by the time Greyson opened his damn eyes, but it was a sweet relief. Again, nice story. I'm curious enough about the other girls' relationships and I'm definitely going to read the first two books to catch up on what went down with them.

Neurons in Action 2 is the second version of a unique CD-ROM-based learning tool that combines hyperlinked text with NEURON simulations of laboratory experiments in neurophysiology. Version 2 features nine new tutorials introducing new channel types, single-channel simulations, and a redesigned interface. Neurons in Action s moving graphs provide insight into nerve function that is simply not possible with conventional, static text and figure presentations. Students discover how changing parameters such a neuronal geometry, ion concentrations, ion channel densities, and degree of myelination affects the generation of action potentials, synaptic potentials, and the spread or propagation of voltages within a neuron. For instructors, minimovies of NEURON simulations are provided for use in lectures.

Neurons in Action 2: Tutorials and Simulations using NEURON Download, by John W. Moore, Anne E. Stuart

Review In this carefully designed book, John Moore and Ann Stuart demystify the basics of nerve function through a series of logical and well-written text-based tutorials with accompanying computer simulations... The computer-based format is ideal for professors and teaching assistants to use in the classroom. The inclusion of classic experimental papers on the CD also makes the experience somewhat of a history lesson as well... The entire simulation environment is contained on the CD, can be easily installed locally on a PC or Mac, and runs quickly using Mozilla Firefox... Overall, Moore and Stuart certainly have created a highly recommendable method for learning and teaching neurophysiology. Readers can now, from the comfort of their own homes, finally vanquish those former physiology demons in a fun and interactive manner and learn a bit of history, too. --Arjun V. Masurkar, Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine

NIA 2 is a true gift to those interested in neuroscience By Mad Dog NIA2 is an incredibly useful training tool to take the neuroscience enthusiast into the lab, without ever having to leave the comfort of their own computer. The individual tutorials are written in a manner that make them easy to follow, very informative, pleasantly written and extremely educational. The developers are a family that apparently spent a great deal of time thinking through the challenges and concepts surrounding neuronal signaling. I don't know the developers but I can't help to think they are some of the best educators of this subject. The tutorials build on one another and give the student a real sense of achievement as they learn about this subject in a very well-designed and progressive manner. I was truly saddened when I finished the tutorials and only hope for a second edition.I think anyone interested in grasping the difficult concept of neuronal signaling will benefit tremendously from this program. The reference section alone is worth the price of the product.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. best way to learn neurophysiology! By JunLiu Neurons in Action was the "textbook" used for an upper level Neurobiology course I took at Williams College. The interactive nature of NIA made the course one of the most engaging learning experiences I ever had as an undergraduate. Although several years have passed since I graduated, I have retained the material I learned from NIA as compared to many other courses that were simply lecture based. On a side note, I think the negative comment on this product that is solely shipping related is unwarranted.

Psychoanalysts must be patients for years before they can practice. The "talking cure"--the basis of all psychotherapy--is best explained from two perspectives: one patient lying on the couch and the other seated behind it. The author of this memoir was both. He candidly discusses his own analysis, describing his emotional misfires and their causes. He then uses case studies from his practice to elucidate the meaning of dreams, the causes of neuroses, depression, relationship problems and other issues that affect the lives of many.

By frank queen This is a fine collection of essays on how a psychoanalyst reacts to the folks who talk to him all day long. Along the way, the author takes the individual stories and weaves an entertaining narrative of the nature of our minds -- how we stick to our habits whether they are good for us or not, how we finally come to need a change in our thinking. Freudian theories are pretty central, but the real focus of the book is on the sheer humanity of the ranchers and townspeople of Durango, Colorado who trusted the author, a Chicago transplant, to help them. His voice is a clear -- and often funny -- response to their stories.

It's easy to take some of his memorable stories and change a name or a date ... and YOU are in that chapter. Terrific personal experiences that teach. This is not a new theme for Joyce; his earlier "Pucker Factor 10," his memoir of being a chopper pilot in Viet Nam, brought those scary and sometimes ironic experiences home. As I told a few pals when I gifted "The Mind...." book: "Read this. You might just learn a part of your inner self. "

Jim Joyce gives us a personal account of how he entered this field and of some of the patients he treated. He subtitles The Mind and I "Reflections of a Psychoanalyst," but also offers in his discussions a mirror for reflecting on ourselves. I've read Jim Joyce's other books, but this one was my favorite. Loaded with humor and personal anecdote.
