Why Sex is Sex By Albert Swanson There is a minor truth-in-advertising issue regarding Why Is Sex Fun?: The Evolution of Human Sexuality, by physiologist Jared Diamond: The title question is never really addressed. The true theme seems to be How Sex Came to be Sex as We Know It. Not that this isn't interesting in its own right, of course. It's just that the original question is worthy of discussion too.Why is Sex Fun? reads like a lecture series rather than a book. Apparently intended to provide the reader with an overview of the latest thinking on the evolutionary aspects of the subject, this short work includes sections on different sexual (and mate) selection strategies employed by males and females (presumably based on unequal "investments" in the methods of getting one's genes into the next generation); lactation (why milk is produced by females, but not, as a rule, males); how and why humans, almost uniquely, came to engage in engage in recreational sex; the unequal domestic roles played by males and females, particularly in child rearing; female menopause (which is, again, nearly unique to humans); and sexual signaling (Diamond considers penis length in human males to be a prime example, but not necessarily a signal directed at females).As fascinating as these subjects are, there is much more that is left out. Any full discussion of human sexuality, especially with the high-order concept of "fun" in its presumed abstract, needs to deal with that odd species' whole gamut of non-procreational expression: homosexuality, old-age love, and sex-as-power, for non-inclusive example. But Why is Sex Fun? treats the very large subject of recreational sex only from the "selfish gene" point of view. Even then, there is at least one major methodological criticism: Most evolutionary biologists and evolutionary psychologists go to great lengths to bring out the importance of "ancestral environment". That is, gene-based behavioral tendencies have evolved over a great deal of time, so it doesn't do a lot of good to consider them only from the standpoint of a modern participant. This problem crops up in Diamond's discussion of male hunting strategies. In a modern hunter-gatherer society, men typically go for the "big kill" (a large mammal, for instance), while women are more content to gather roots and so on. Diamond makes the point that the male strategy makes no sense nutritionally, so the answer must be found in differential sexual strategies. However, the possibility is not mentioned that hunting patterns may have evolved when big game was, in fact, rather more plentiful than it is today.All this is a pity, because we know, from the author's other works (especially the wonderfully told Guns, Germs, and Steel), that he is quite capable of a fully formed presentation. Sex deserves it.

Stimulating topic By A Customer I really liked that booked, but then I also bought "The Third Chimpanzee" from Jared and I found that "Why sex is fun" to be just an excerpt of the spicy parts of "The Third Chimpanzee".So, if you want to see the spicy sections only, this is your book, but if you buy "The Third Chimpanzee" you get a fuller picture and all the hot topics as well.Philipp Schaumann Singapore

Just in case you needed explanation By Schtinky Actual content of this short work (only 146 pages) I would rate only 3 1/2 stars, mostly due to the lack of a bibliography, but Diamond makes up for everything with his reader friendly style, earning him 4 stars. He does present extensive additional reading materials and a complete index, so even with a lack of reference he does not leave you in the dark should you decide further study is in order.`Why Sex Is Fun' is really just an anthropological muse, Diamond giving you the feeling that you are sitting in a café with him, kicking back, drinking some wine, and mulling over an interesting subject with well schooled friend.He thoroughly examines the separation of man from ape in our breeding signals and patterns, but leaves out significant sociological factors that held the hand of the human boxes as we evolved up and away from lower-brained species, leaving behind many instinctual behaviors in favor of the intellectual.However, from a strictly anthropological view, this book is interesting, well written, well formatted, and a welcome addition to Diamond's previous `Guns, Germs, and Steel' and `The Third Chimpanzee'.You will find yourself pondering questions such as, Why do human females hide ovulation? Why do human females shut down fertility (menopause)? What is the benefit of the human female being receptive to $ex even when she is not ovulating? What makes human males `stick around' rather than spread their genes as far and wide as possible? Why don't men lactate? (*shudder*) And the favorite chapter for the ladies, What are men good for? Which studies the evolutionary role of the human male.`Why Is Sex Fun?' is an informative read with a dash of fun, challenging enough for anthropology students and yet written for laymen to enjoy also. About the Author

Luc Sante was born in Verviers, Belgium. His other books include Low Life, Evidence, The Factory of Facts, and Kill All Your Darlings. He is the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Grammy (for album notes), an Infinity Award for Writing from the International Center of Photography, and Guggenheim and Cullman fellowships. He has contributed to The New York Review of Books since 1981, and has written for many other magazines. He is the visiting professor of writing and the history of photography at Bard College and lives in Ulster County, New York.

For those who love Paris By Amazon Customer This is by the writer of Low Life, one of my favorite books of all time, and he does for Paris something similar, which is to shine a light on the past so it casts very detailed edged shadows over the present. Some of the passages are really transporting. About certain sections of Paris that were the haunts of the ordinary residents who lived all their lives in one neighborhood, and also those places that still exist that throw the flavor of the past up into the present with strength and presence.

The Other Paris: the city of light when once darker, more dangerous, more fascinating By Merrily Baird Luc Sante's "The Other Paris" is a joy in both the literary and visual senses, a wonderful exploration of a Paris that is gradually disappearing. Step by step older buildings are being replaced, a tolerance of the underworld diminishing, the size of the underclasses shrinking, and the intimacy of neighborhoods disappearing as electronics keep people inside, movement occurs in cars, and chain stores replace family-owned businesses. These losses notwithstanding, prior traditions are not gone altogether. They remain an important element of French culture and live on, above all, in movies, literature, and a sense of social hierarchy. To cite but a few instances, what Sante mourns survives in the denizens and neighborhoods of Georges Simenon's Maigret mysteries, most of them set in the 1930s, and, in a different way, in the contemporary French TV crime series "Engrenages" ("Spiral" in English).To conduct much of his research, the Belgian-born Sante embraced the tradition of the French "flaneur," someone who wanders without a specific goal in mind, making frequent stops to observe and ask questions, quite often recording those findings. He begins the book with a history of the capital city, a focus of reconstructions over many centuries, culminating with the radical change instituted by Baron Haussmann who created an axis system of grand boulevards that separated heretofore tightly clustered neighborhoods. In this chapter, as in those that follow, black and white photographs enhance the text as do citations from prose and poetry writers.Most of the focus in "The Other Paris" is on past events and years, but this history is a prelude to the present. For example, I used the book to learn about the late 20th-century intellectual Guy Debord. This provided context for Nobel Prize winner Patrick Modiano's novel "In the Cafe of Lost Youth," which was released in English translation this week and opens with an epigraph from Debord. Sante's text is presented as a flowing narrative, but the nature of the information and an excellent index set the stage as well for its use as a reference tool.

About the Author Dan P. McAdams, PhD, is the Henry Wade Rogers Professor of Psychology and Human Development at Northwestern University. 70 of 71 people found the following review helpful. Terribly, Horribly Improved By E. Lambert First of all, I wouldn't exactly call myself an anxious person. A pessimist, maybe. A realist for sure. Bad stuff happens, often enough to me. I think it's just plain good sense to plan for things to go terribly, horribly wrong. So, even though I didn't set out to buy a self-help book about anxiety, when I stumbled on a copy of this book, with it's disconcerting, topsy turvy cover, I bought it on impulse. And then I read it. And now...well, now, I feel like I'm looking a the world in a totally and profoundly different way. And I like what I see.Nothing in the book defies logic. In fact, it's all very simple, really, making uncannily perfect sense. In fact, I'm kind of surprised none of the points in the gentle, funny, and playful chapters never occurred to me spontaneously before. But as I browsed and flirted with this remarkable little book, a lot became clear to me about those times in life when I've struggled. Yes, I can choose to give my attention gently to what's going on around me in the here and now. Yes, I can learn to not invest my thoughts with a lot of unnecessary authority. Yes, I can decide what I want my life to really be about, and, yes, I can find the flexibility I need to make it happen.I found the book to be wise and warm, literary and lighthearted. There is no "seven steps to a better you" here, no psychobabble or motivational baloney. Rather, it's like a barroom conversation with Wilson and DuFrene, a couple of guys who've thought a lot about life and how to wring a lot of joy and meaning out of the brief time we have. I loved the book. I got a whole lot out of it, even though I didn't really mean to. And I recommend it sincerely to anyone who has a few hours to kill on a good read that might, just possibly, change his or her life.

I have also found it a worthwhile and personally liberating read. There is an authenticity and compassion that is deeply present in the voice of this book. The suggestions and techniques have a solid grounding in state of the art psychological research, yet they are presented in an engaging, humorous and humanistic way. This book does not feel like a workbook or a self-help book. It has the quality of a warm and significant conversation with someone who is invested in your well-being and your personal liberation. Smith For any of you who have ever been anxious--whether you suffer from an anxiety disorder or struggle under the weight of job stress, parental responsibilities, and the speed of a society that presses us to rush through life without ever stopping to get present--this book is for you. Like many who will pick up this title I've suffered from stress and anxiety much of my life. I've read dozens of books on the topic and have worked as a self-help writer for nearly a decade. Rarely, if ever, have I read a book on anxiety that is as lucid and engaging as this one. It provides a unique insight not only into the nature of anxiety but the nature of human suffering by looking at the problem through the lens of an emerging, scientifically-grounded, and extremely innovative psyotherapeutic modality called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. ACT, as it is often called, utilizes techniques--like mindfulness and thought watching--that are as old as the hills, but contextualizes them in a way that is extremely palatable, intellectually satisfying, and useful for the Western reader. While the book is skill-based (in that it teaches you how to use specific techniques to manage anxiety) it was delightful to find that this isn't a "quick fix" program like so many out there, but one that is built to help you look at your stress, your anxiety, your life in a fundamentally new and different way. By Celia Kennedy The title of the book caught my eye, it had a "Secret Life of Walter Mitty" quality to it. As I read the book and the title revealed itself, I found myself caught up in a book that turned out to be weightier than expected.When we meet Julie Winterfeldt, she is finding out that her life is full of lies and misdirection's. Deciding that she deserves more than this, she promptly sets in motion decisions that will take her... somewhere. That somewhere is the stress-free, jobless, responsibility-free world of her best friend Kate. Her bestie lives on a trust fund, so life is more than comfortable, but lacking in purpose.After lounging about for weeks, Julie learns there is much more to Kate's life than she knew and uses this as the springboard to find her own direction. But as life does, she's thrown a couple curveballs, and she has to put all the pieces together, reinventing a new self.A charming, easy read, that left me wanting more. The author takes time setting up the complex life of Julie at the beginning, and it is worth it. I would have loved one more chapter, to delve ever further into the ever evolving life of Julie Winterfeldt.

I'll be able to put it down when I get sleepy. Well, I was wrong. I got caught up in Julie and her friend and the work she was doing, and before I knew it, the book was finished. I wanted to hear more, but the book was only released about a week ago. So I assume I have to wait patiently for the next one!!! Write faster!!! Loved it! Can't wait for the next one!

The unexpected detours that shatter Julie's normal routine life and known identity pull you in from the first chapter. The relationships that develop with the characters that are written so well you can envision them, this is a wonderful read. I can not wait for the next book in the series to be released!

About the Author Valerie Dean O'laughlin received her undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary, and her PhD in biological anthropology from Indiana University. She is an Associate Professor of Anatomy at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she teaches human gross anatomy to medical students, basic human anatomy to undergraduates, and human anatomy for medical imaging evaluation to undergraduate and graduate students. She also teaches a pedagogical methods course and mentors MS and PhD students pursuing anatomy education research. She is active in the American Association of Anatomists (AAA) and the Society for Ultrasound in Medical Education(SUSME). She currently is serving as President of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). She received the AAA Basmajian Award for excellence in teaching gross anatomy and outstanding accomplishments in scholarship in education. Valerie is coauthor of the McKinley/O’Loughlin/Bidle: Anatomy & Physiology: An Integrative Approach textbook.Michael P. McKinley received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, and both MS and PhD degrees from Arizona State University. In 1978, he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Medical School in the laboratory of Dr. Stanley Prusiner, where he worked for 12 years investigating prions and prion-diseases. In 1980, he became a member of the anatomy faculty at the UCSF Medical School, where he taught medical histology for 10 years while continuing to do research on prions. During this time, he was an author or co-author of more than 80 scientific papers. Michael was a member of the biology faculty at Glendale Community College from 1991 to 2012, where he taught undergraduate anatomy and physiology, general biology, and genetics. Between 1991 and 2000, he also participated in Alzheimer disease research and served as director of the Brain Donation Program at the Sun Health Research Institute, as well as teaching developmental biology and human genetics at Arizona State University, West. His vast experience in histology, neuroanatomy, and cell biology greatly shaped the related content in Human Anatomy. He retired from active teaching in 2012 and continues to be an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). Michael is coauthor of the McKinley/O’Loughlin/Bidle: Anatomy & Physiology: An Integrative Approach textbook. He resides in Tempe, AZ, with his wife Jan.

Actually, before scheduling an appointment with the orthodontist, you should read this book.Of course you could ask a few questions and have some of your doubts clarified during the appointment with the orthodontist, but it won’t be nearly as comprehensive and systematized as this book. Also, if you go to the appointment already knowing your options, it’ll make the decisions regarding the treatment much easier to make.At first I thought that orthodontics was concerned with esthetics. I had no idea that even slightly misaligned teeth could cause a series of health issues, such as persistent headache, respiratory issues, and even sinusitis. I thought that only extreme cases of misaligned or crowded teeth could seriously interfere with the patient’s health.Drs. Matthew & Courtney Dunn lists a series of symptoms that parents should pay attention to. The way a children chew and how they are breathing, the position of the chin, etc. Those symptoms might go unnoticed due to disinformation, thus, learning them and paying attention to the kids could make a whole lot of difference in their future. And there’s also the financial aspect: by identifying potential issues earlier, the treatment tends to be shortened, which means less money.Another thing that I liked to know about was the clear braces option. I had no idea they even existed. I knew braces were smaller and prettier nowadays, but the transparent ones were a surprise to me.To sum up, I recommend this book to anyone eager to learn more about orthodontics in general, but especially to parents. 5/5 stars!

Excellent guide to braces By TFLReader Our son is nearing the age where we need to start looking at getting braces for his teeth and no one is really excited about this. I don't have fond memories of having braces as a teen, he is pretty frightened about the whole prospect, and the cost is pretty daunting. We thought we would try to get educated before making appointments and found the book "Brace Yourself" to be exactly what we needed. Written by two experienced orthodontists, there is a ton of great information here about the importance of getting good orthodontic work, the different types of braces available and even payment options that are out there. A very well written and highly informative guide that educated us and eased our minds about this entire process.

Martin Getting braces to have straighter teeth is becoming a norm but it is important to know everything about the process. Having the right orthodontic care is essential and you can learn more about that as well as the importance of straight teeth, financing orthodontic treatments, and getting braces in this guide. This is quite an interesting read especially for prospective patients and parents.

She went on and on about itching but she never said what the bites looked like, felt like (besides itchy) or where on the body they were. I just felt like she should have gone into way more detail about the mites as opposed to how she got them and the events leading up to that. However I did find it interesting to learn that the mites may be an issue for some but not necessarily all people within the home.

About the Author Sigmund Freud; born Sigismund Schlomo Freud; 6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939) was an Austrian neurologist who became known as the founding father of psychoanalysis. Freud qualified as a doctor of medicine at the University of Vienna in 1881, and then carried out research into cerebral palsy, aphasia and microscopic neuroanatomy at the Vienna General Hospital. He was appointed a university lecturer in neuropathology in 1885 and became a professor in 1902.

I'm by no means an expert or student of psychology and have only taken a couple courses for college... so this book didn't help me much. It's very dry and seems to be more advanced than I expected for an intro book. I also didn't follow it well.I didn't finish the book to the end, but got a good ways through it before deciding it wasn't for me. It would likely be better for students or more advanced readers.
