But I would not have purchased it would I have known that it is a REPRINT , in small format, of the 2014 " IDIOT'S GUIDE the tarot ", that I already own.

And, I think it may work for many who are looking for a simple and concise guide to the Tarot. So, for some this will be exactly what they're looking for. It has great illustrations - and is printed and has a layout that makes it very pleasing to the eye, easy to digest and easy to locate information in. However, for me, the information was a little bit like an over-optimistic cheerleader - information like your grandmother might give you along with milk and cookies. Almost every entry, it seemed, had something about "follow your dreams!" - like maybe in a Little Pony motivational guide. But, maybe if you are in a place of discouragement or are feeling overly pessimistic, this may be just what you need! :-) So, depending on your personality, this may be a good guide. Personally, I haven't found anything that really surpasses Ruth Pollack's 78 Degrees of Wisdom. The works of Mary Greer, Marcus Katz, Tali Goodwin, and others are really superior in my opinion.

It has revealed many of its secrets to her, but it has not lost its mystery. There are always new layers to uncover and that’s what she is committed to do. Now she is teaching us to do it as well. She tells readers that “the tarot is a partner on your life-path”. People usually arrive seeking answers but leave with clarity and self-guidance.The book includes a Glossary of Tarot-Related Terms, descriptions and interpretations for all Major and Minor Arcana cards, an appendix of Tarot Symbolism, a Troubleshooting section, sample spreads, and basic instructions for working with a tarot deck.Full-color, updated modern design, utilizing the illustrations from the Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot deck, make this book a new and valuable addition to any tarot afficianado’s library.(TarotWise.com received a free review copy of this deck.)

Rereading the Fossil Record presents the first-ever historical account of the origin, rise, and importance of paleobiology, from the mid-nineteenth century to the late 1980s. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, David Sepkoski shows how the movement was conceived and promoted by a small but influential group of paleontologists and examines the intellectual, disciplinary, and political dynamics involved in the ascendency of paleobiology. By tracing the role of computer technology, large databases, and quantitative analytical methods in the emergence of paleobiology, this book also offers insight into the growing prominence and centrality of data-driven approaches in recent science.

Rereading the Fossil Record: The Growth of Paleobiology as an Evolutionary Discipline, by David Sepkoski

Review “In the 1970s, a new kid on the block was shaking up palaeontology, geology and biology. Historian David Sepkoski charts the rise of palaeobiology from 1945 to 1985, driven by a small but illustrious band of palaeontologists including Stephen Jay Gould and David Raup, who grappled with how the geological record could produce evidence for evolution. The solution, as Sepkoski engagingly relates, lay in quantitative analysis of evolutionary patterns in fossils.” (Nature)“This splendid book tells a fascinating tale; here we find the gentlemanly Norman Newell, the young tigers Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould, the brilliant, prickly Tom Schopf, the innovative David Raup, the late Jack Sepkoski (father of the author), Steven Stanley, James Valentine and many other extraordinary personalities. We read of their insights, interactions, disagreements, quarrels, personal lives and contributions.” (Euan Clarkson, University of Edinburgh Times Higher Education)“[A] superb book. . . . For what it tells us about paleobiology in particular and about twentieth-century discipline building in general, Rereading the Fossil Record: The Growth of Paleobiology as an Evolutionary Discipline could hardly be bettered. It is lucid in explaining sometimes technical research, sympathetic in explaining why individuals did what they did, and deft in weaving together the intellectual and the personal strands of its story.” (Gregory Radick, University of Leeds Journal of the History of Biology)“An exceptional book, Rereading the Fossil Record draws wisely and appreciatively on the work of fellow historians of science (to mention just a few: Ronald Rainger, Joe Cain, V. Betty Smocovitis, Michael Ruse, and Sharon Kingsland). But it stands on its own as a major contribution that will interest biologists, historians more generally (it’s not only good history, it’s about history), and philosophers alike." (John Beatty Science)“This book is a deliciously detailed account of the rise of paleobiology, built on archival records, correspondence, and interviews. . . . A valuable acquisition for all libraries with science and history of science collections. Highly recommended.” (M. A. Wilson, College of Wooster Choice)“[F]ascinating.” (Lukas Rieppel Endeavour)“David Sepkoski’s book is the one book that anyone interested in evolution should buy this year. And next year. And probably the year after. The reason is that, for the first time, the emergence of the modern science of macroevolution receives its due. . . . Waste no time, not merely adding this to your bookshelf, but in reading it and marveling how so few people revolutionized our view of the past in such a very few years.” (Reports of the National Center for Science Education)“For those potential readers interested in the history of the diversification of life on Earth and/or those biologists interested in the impact of such paleontologically derived concepts such as punctuated equilibrium, mass extinctions, or species selection, this book is extremely important.” (Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith)“A significant archival achievement. . . . By giving us the institutional, intellectual, and disciplinary developments that resulted in the emergence of palaeobiology as a new research agenda for palaeontology, Sepkoski has provided all scholars interested in the course of evolutionary theory with an invaluable history. . . . One can hardly help reading Sepkoski’s book and not have the desire to continue writing the story of evolution in the post-synthesis era. He has carved out an impressive story in the details of this group of palaeontologists, and made a significant contribution to histories of science concerned with the role of disciplinary formation in the shaping of theory and research agendas in the natural sciences.” (Myrna Perez Sheldon, Harvard University British Journal for the History of Science)“A significant archival achievement. . . He has carved out an impressive story in the details of this group of palaeontologists, and made a significant contribution to histories of science concerned with the role of disciplinary formation in the shaping of theory and research agendas in the natural sciences.”“Rereading the Fossil Record is a good story, superbly well told. It should be of great interest to historians, philosophers, and scientists concerned with the biological and geological sciences. . . . This first book-length treatment of the paleobiology revolution provides a superb basis upon which to launch historical dissertations and should help redirect philosophers of science more strongly toward macroevolutionary and paleobiological dimensions of evolutionary biology.” (James Griesemer, University of California, Davis HOPOS)“This exercise in recent historiography is enormously valuable and welcome.” (Michael J. Benton, University of Bristol Trends in Ecology & Evolution)“Insightful and excellent. . . . A historian of science, Sepkoski has melded a historian’s detailed documentation with a clear description of the science itself and perceptive insights into the personalities of the key players. In addition to oral interviews, Sepkoski has taken full advantage of preserved personal correspondence, as well as the ar-chives of the Paleontological Society and its journals. These reveal the frank and not uncommonly acrimonious discussions among the major players. . . . This book should be on the shelf of every professional paleontologist. It should also be required reading for every student entering the field. They will gain insights not only into the science of paleobiology, but a far better understanding of how science as a discipline works.” (Roy Plotnick, University of Illinois at Chicago Priscum)“[Rereading the Fossil Record] will be read with interest and profit both by historians of twentieth-century science and evolutionary scientists.” (Irina Podgorny Metascience)“David Sepkoski’s book is the first to examine the rise of paleobiology and the emergence of macroevolution as a discipline in the 1970s. These advances shook the fields of biology, geology, and paleontology and established a cadre of major questions that have been pursued ever since. The subject is one of the three main advances in evolution in the twentieth century, the others being the rise of the ‘modern synthesis’ and the advent of ‘evo-devo.’ It is rare to be able to give such high marks for the treatment of both the science and the history, but this book deserves such praise. An essential for every evolutionist’s bookshelf.” (Kevin Padian, University of California, Berkeley)“One measure of the greatness of a work is that the characters who play roles in the narrative feel its essential truth. As someone who is proud to have been there during much of the action David Sepkoski describes, I give his description and analysis of the history of paleobiology a five-star rating; to my mind, this actually was the way it was.” (Niles Eldredge, American Museum of Natural History)“David Sepkoski’s narrative shows us how the science of paleontology was transformed in the later twentieth century by the energetic activities of a quite small group of talented individuals. Their journal, Paleobiology, gave their movement a name and an institutional identity, but also an outlet for their radical research program. Foreseeing at an early stage the huge potential of computers, they turned the analysis of the fossil record into a component of evolutionary theorizing that could no longer be ignored or marginalized by the dominant ‘modern synthesis.’ This is a book from which both evolutionary biologists and historians of twentieth-century science will have much to learn, and it is so readable that they should all enjoy the experience.” (Martin J. S. Rudwick, author of Worlds Before Adam and Bursting the Limits of Time)

About the Author David Sepkoski is Senior Research Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. He is coeditor, with Michael Ruse, of The Paleobiological Revolution: Essays on the Growth of Modern Paleontology, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

By Gervasio Silva Carvalho I choose this classification because it is what I like in a book with analyze critically a scientific theme. The author uses the evolution of knowledge thinking how the scientists explain their ideas in that time. After reading the book I better understand the evolution of paleontological thought, evolutionary, and especially the influence of Insular Equilibrium Theory in those areas of knowledge.I strongly recommend this book!

Looking for a Scare? Then Read These 13 Spine-chilling Stories

For people who believe in the paranormal—ghosts, spirits, and other unexplainable encounters—most will agree that old hospitals and asylums are the most haunted places you can visit. With thirteen chilling chapters, Haunted Hospitals delves into the history of the most infamous asylums, sanitariums and hospitals on Earth, unlocking their dark histories and detailing their paranormal activities. Take Waverly Hills Sanatorium, home to Mary, the apparition of a little girl who “wasn’t normal.” Left behind after a disease cut her young life short, Mary went from innocent in life to something more horrific in death. Then there’s Old Changi military hospital, where a history of wartime bloodbaths still stains the old abandoned halls—leaving behind chilling images in the minds of trespassers. Or what about any of the other haunted hospitals contained within, where apparitions, disembodied voices, and strange occurences are commonplace. With overcrowding and barbaric medical procedures being practiced, these buildings were the torture houses of the 20th century, and the eeriest haunts of the 21st. Haunted Hospitals unlocks the dark histories of the most chilling abandoned hospitals from around the world. Every chapter describes the eerie and often frightening details of the best ghostly encounters. Are these sightings based on myth or true horrors? Only you can decide.

A Synopsys of The Mind in the Making

Violent prejudices in current beliefs and habits of thinking oppose this application. The author aims to trace these obstacles historically to their source, to perform, so to say, a kind of Freudian analysis on the human mind at large. At the same time he points out the way advances have hitherto been made. Accordingly the major part of the book is taken up with discussions of our animal and savage ancestry; the be- ginning of critical thinking in Greece, whose supreme contribution to human thought was scepticism; the influence of Plato and Aristotle; the origin of medieval civilization and our intellectual inheritance from that; finally, the scientific revolution and its effects. The main lessons to be learned from this survey are apparently, first, that our current social beliefs and attitudes are rooted in our past and maintained solely on this account, and, secondly, that progress in any direction has always been conditioned on breaking with the past and boldly pushing out into new paths. The book concludes with two chapters of which the one treats- of the sickness of an acquisitive society with some recent instances, as the author holds them to be, of reaction (the Lusk Committee, etc.), while the other contains reflections on the philosophy of repression. The author proposes no specific reforms; his object is the more funda- mental one of breaking our "shackles ", changing our attitude to the problems.

Changed my life By A Customer Well perhaps "changed my life" is a bit lofty but when I first read this book some twenty years ago it did create a lasting change in how I hold my beliefs, notions, feelings, etc. I slowly became used to the idea that my current thoughts were driven not by some mysterious separate entity called ME that had special access to the unknown, to the right answers, etc, but by my willy nilly cultural influences. And that I needed to learn a manner of habit in which to examine and alter my filtering system. Quite often a feeling becomes associated with or identified with truth, or rightousness, etc. but a feeling is just a feeling. And we tend to absorb and apply some less than useful formulations that manufacture these feelings. We forget the characteristics left out, the *where* that these notions-feelings came from. I would say the book helped me get into this living thing, whatever it is. Not bad for a ratty old book!

This book was written around the times of the first "world war",yet to me it seems prevalent to contemporary times. It also suggest that we will always have something to challange our minds.

Objects such as statues and icons have long been problematic in the study of religion, especially in European Christianities. Through examining two groups, the contemporary Pagan Glastonbury Goddess religion in the Southwest of England and a cult of the Virgin Mary in Andalusia, Spain, Amy Whitehead asserts that objects can be more than representational or symbolic. In the context of increasing academic interest in materiality in religions and cultures, she shows how statues, or 'things', are not always interacted with as if they are inert material against which we typically define ourselves as 'modern' humans.Bringing two distinct cultures and religions into tension, animism and 'the fetish' are used as ways in which to think about how humans interact with religious statues in Western Europe and beyond. Both theoretical and descriptive, the book illustrates how religions and cultural practices can be re-examined as performances that necessarily involve not only human persons, but also objects.

Religious Statues and Personhood: Testing the Role of Materiality, by Amy Whitehead

Review “Religious Statues and Personhood: Testing the Role of Materiality makes an important contribution to the burgeoning literature on material religion and to anthropological material culture studies more generally. The author's relational approach to object personhood points to new ways of understanding both 'objects' and 'people' in the study of vernacular religion.” ―Dr. Rodney Harrison

If, on the other hand, one wants to deepen their understanding of religion and how culture and traditions play into how we work out our response to God, by all means buy this book. It's a hard read but worth the effort.

Review Doody's Review Service Review by Anthony Shanks, MD (Washington University School of Medicine) This is a thorough handbook covering pertinent information in gynecology and obstetrics that is designed to be carried in the pocket and to point-of-care settings. The purpose is to provide a quick and easily accessible manual for obstetrics and gynecology issues. It is not designed for directed reading, although many chapters do a very thorough job of covering the material. The online format is nice and I appreciate that it is linked to Inkling, although the code redemption required using a different site. The intended audience is medical students and residents, although other care providers may appreciate the book. It is unique in that it depends on a lot of residents for input, which is a nice feature as it allows input from those who would benefit the most. The other authors are all credible authorities. This is a handy pocket book for the field. It is designed to be used in a triage setting or for quick location of information. Chapters such as the one on alloimmunization and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy give a concise description of the pathophysiology followed by clinical management. In fact, all chapters are heavily geared toward clinical management. More flow charts would be appreciated. The treatment section for UTIs and STIs are well done and the easy access to medication doses is appreciated. This book functions as a more comprehensive version of the "red book" -- a pocket book designed for quick 5-minute digestions. This is a simple, straightforward, and well done pocket reference. The online features are nice and this will serve medical students well during their introduction to the field.

Ebook PDF Advanced Practice Nursing Guide to the Neurological Exam, by Alexandra Armitage MS CNL APRN

Today's advanced practice registered nursing and physician assistant programs have been allocating less time to the study of neurology, leaving new practitioners with an uncertain grasp of how to approach the neurological patient. Here is a "how to" manual for knowledgeably conducting the basic neurological examination and confidently applying exam findings to the interpretation of common neurological symptoms. It explains all facets of the standard neuro exam that is conducted in clinical and hospital settings and includes an abundance of photos, illustrations, and useful algorithms. The book examines how to use the exam results to determine a likely diagnosis or to identify an area of concern for further diagnostic tests. The text presents both basic and advanced concepts related to the exam to foster a deeper understanding of the meaning and physiology underlying an abnormal finding.

Step by step, the text describes how to conduct the exam and provides photos, illustrations, and diagrammatic representations of examination steps and concepts. Algorithms bring a logical problem-solving approach to clinical thinking, and reference tables provide information at a glance for the busy practitioner. The book will be beneficial both for new practitioners who seek mastery of neurology fundamentals and a solid understanding of exam findings, as well as for those who have mastered the fundamentals and wish to gain more sophisticated diagnostic skills in order to accurately analyze the meaning of each symptom in the broader context of neurological practice.

Key Features:

  • Presents a clear, step-by-step description of how to conduct a neurological examination and apply findings in the clinical setting
  • Addresses the needs of both new and seasoned practitioners
  • Provides a wealth of illustrations and diagrams to reinforce concepts
  • Uses algorithms to enhance a logical problem-solving approach
  • Includes quick reference tables for the busy practitioner

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It Rings True By Glen Finland Autism in the Family, Dr. Robert Naseef's double-sided point of view of life with autism, sure rings true to this member of the tribe. As a mother of a young adult on the spectrum, it's empowering to finally hear from an "expert" that, in fact, yes, we parents are the real experts. Naseef assures us that we know our child better than anyone else in the world. That is no small thing. The author knows what he's talking about because he has sat on both sides of the table -- at the sort of IEPs and visits to specialists and group housing facilities that often leave parents discouraged, diminished, and reeling. He recalls his own feelings of heartbreak and grief upon first receiving the diagnosis of autism, or as he's heard other parents in his practice call it, the A-Bomb. The book is full of refreshing humor about the non-sequiturs of loving someone on the spectrum, but Naseef and his family have lived a difficult life. His autistic son Tariq, now 33, stopped talking and playing with his toys at 18 months. Since then the boy has become a fine teacher to this father and therapist. The lesson learned is one of acceptance. In a poignant open letter to Tariq, Naseef writes that a different sort of life can be a good one. "Without speaking a word, you have taught the little boy in me to speak and remember what I once knew." He also hits many nerves that parents are eager to calm in a non-judgmental atmosphere: fathers struggling with depression and denial over the diagnosis, and the emotional toll raising a child with autism can take on a marriage.Parents of all differently-abled children should read this book for its honest, intelligent and, dare I say it, hopeful look into the long journey ahead. Through it all, there is the sense of a strong guiding hand, the hard-earned expertise of a father who just happens to be an expert himself.- Glen Finland, author of Next Stop: A Son With Autism Grows Up [...] [...]

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wow! That's how I felt when I read this book! By Amazon Customer p. 216 - "So this is not just a story about me and my son; everyone can benefit from finding links to events in their own lives..."I didn't want to believe what had happened to my baby but I saw it happen with my own eyes and when the doctor said the word "autism" I don't remember feeling anything at all - I was just numb. I went home and watched Rain Man and Helen Keller. I thought it was my job to be Annie Sullivan - I was going to fix the autism. I really thought autism was about getting my son to sit in his chair and fold his napkin. It was like that for a long time, like declaring war on autism, compounded with other family problems. I was the mother whose son didn't sleep through the night for nearly eight years (p.23) and broke every window in our house (Chapter 5). I also "laid hands" on my son and prayed that God would give him a new brain and I thought it was my fault when he didn't change because I didn't have enough faith (Chapter 11).p.84 -"People cannot control what autism can do to their lives...What they can do is relate to their lives differently."Dr. Naseef teaches the truths that "people cannot control their thoughts or emotions within themselves or the universal truth that everything evolves and changes." Some of us have been rendered powerless by the autism, but even the most challenging situations faced by families with autism are always unfolding, leaving us choices how we can respond to our suffering.Today, my son also is safe and happy and I "stumble on happiness" when I visit him at his residential school at Bancroft in Haddonfield, NJ. When we are together he likes to write the alphabet and sing Barney songs. When my child asks me for things repeatedly that he can't have because they cause him harm, it is now easier for me to say "no" to him. He is 19 and I still don't know where he will live after age 21. For me and for all of the other parents with kids like mine, I am so grateful that Dr. Naseef has published again and advocates strongly for services for our children. No matter what age your child is, if your child has autism, this book will help you. You will find understanding for yourself and the family you came from, the most up-to-date research taught in parent-ease by a masterful therapist who can and does speak to parents all over the world, some stories about other families, truths that medications and diets can only do so much to help (or not), helpful suggestions for all of us who want a loving relationship with someone with autism, and so much more.Deb Auerbach"The woods - of autism (mine) - are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep." adapted from Robert Frost's (1874-1963) poetry

Comfort, Validation and Scientifically Based Resources By A Loving Grandmother Autism in the Family: Caring and Coping Together by Dr. Robert NaseefAutism: look it up on the Internet; read about it in a magazine; watch a prime time special. If what you have seen or read strikes a nerve, and makes you want to know more, you must read Dr. Naseef's book. It does more than offer information; it opens your mind, and touches your heart. It breaks through the isolation that families experience once they receive the autism bomb. When you're dealing with the 24/7 challenges of autism you might fear that you don't have time to read another book about autism. I get it. I've been there. I'm still here. Most of the books don't reach you on a personal or practical level. However, Dr. Naseef's book is different. I urge you to put this book on the nightstand near your bed. Download it to your iPad. Invest thirty minutes or less to read the first three pages, including praise from leading experts. Read the forward, preface, acknowledgments and finally the Prologue: A Letter to My Son. By then you'll know you're in the hands of someone you can trust. What makes this book more insightful is how it invites men into the discussion. If you're the father of a child with autism, you'll believe you've finally found someone who hears your heart, who shares the broken dream, who gives you permission to say aloud what others may judge as heartless. Face your grief without judgment as Dr. Naseef invites you into "the secret life of men". Gain new insights as you read the chapter "Big Boys Don't Cry "; Amazon offers you the opportunity to read passages from the book online. Meet Dr. Naseef as he shares his experiences into the challenges a father faces when raising a child with autism, by watching the YouTube video: Dr. Robert Naseef Fathers and Autism. One out of 88 children are diagnosed with autism. My suggestion: put this book in the hands of your therapists, pediatricians, teachers, college students, advocates, family and friends. Autism is isolating. We can't do this alone. As a grandparent I desperately wanted to be an active participant in my grandson's therapy as an advocate for him, his siblings, and his parents. Dr. Naseef writes conversationally. He exposes his own vulnerability while helping you "BE REAL," truthful to yourself while addressing your own needs. When you hate the autism, there's no judgment. You are offered validation for the entire spectrum of emotions.Often we believe that all the resources for therapy must go to our child. However, I've learned that by understanding my own fears, guilt, confusion, denials, and grief, I've become a better grandparent and a much better mother to my son. Immersing myself into a foreign country called "autism," I had to learn the language and the step-by-step strategies for dealing with the behaviors. There is tons of information to sift through; what is fact, and what is voodoo medicine. You can trust the information in this book. Dr. Naseef is an expert, recognized nationally and internationally. This book articulates the resources for scientific theories presented in layman's terms. As your child's advocate, the explanations of up-to-date therapies are enough to have this book as a text you can actually understand and use. The Brooks Publishing Company posted a thorough interview with Dr. Naseef as he answered how his book helps navigate the emotional landscape of autism. The complete interview can be found on their website. If you were going on a trip you'd get a book about the recommended places to visit, eat and sleep, including accurate maps. Autism is a lifetime journey. Get yourself a yellow highlighter and post-it notes to help you navigate. This is one book you'll refer to often, if only to remind yourself that you're not alone. It opens you to the possibility of hope with compassion, trust and truth.Dr. Susan Levy, director of the Center for Autism Research, CHOP, wrote the forward, and I quote her: "I tell people I feel calmer just by speaking with him."
