In this moving and controversial Quarterly Essay, doctor and writer Karen Hitchcock investigates the treatment of the elderly and dying through some unforgettable cases. With honesty and deep experience, she looks at end-of-life decisions, frailty and dementia, over-treatment and escalating costs.Ours is a society in which ageism, often disguised, threatens to turn the elderly into a “burden” – difficult, hopeless, expensive and homogenous. While we rightly seek to curb treatment when it is futile, harmful or against a patient’s wishes, this can sometimes lead to limits on care that suit the system rather than the person. Doctors may declare a situation hopeless when it may not be so.We must plan for a future when more of us will be old, Hitchcock argues, with the aim of making that time better, not shorter. And we must change our institutions and society to meet the needs of an ageing population. Dear Life is a landmark essay by one of Australia’s most powerful writers.‘The elderly, the frail are our society. They are our parents and grandparents, our carers and neighbours, and they are every one of us in the not-too-distant future … They are not a growing cost to be managed or a burden to be shifted or a horror to be hidden away, but people whose needs require us to change …’ —Karen Hitchcock, Dear Life‘In Dear Life, Hitchcock has laid out her most important work to date in the type of clear, rational, respectful prose that the topic demands. As much as our natural instinct may be to avert our gaze from death, to push it from our minds at every opportunity, this essay is inspirational and aspirational in its scope. It is highly recommended to all those who hold life dear, and especially to those whose professional lives are devoted to helping us through illness and death with dignity.’ —Weekend Australian‘Hitchcock’s essay is not comfortable reading, but it is compelling’ —Saturday Paper‘One of the most compelling and powerful ever published in the Quarterly Essay series’ —Sydney Morning Herald‘A sensitive, rigorous, and moving account that exposes the prevailing ageism in our medical services and in Australian society as a whole.’ —Australian Book ReviewKaren Hitchcock is the author of Quarterly Essay 57 Dear Life: On caring for the elderly, the award-winning story collection Little White Slips and a regular contributor to the Monthly. She is also a staff physician in acute and general medicine at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne.

By Andrew McMillen A brisk read about the heaviest topic of all, 'Dear Life' is written with passion and compassion in equal measure. Its author, Karen Hitchcock, is a physician in acute and general medicine at a Melbourne public hospital. Moreover, she is a sharp writer, as readers of her regular column in The Monthly will attest. For years in that space she has enlightened, amused and moved us with short stories from inside the medical profession, a cloistered community for whom strong communication with outsiders is rarely a virtue. It is to Hitchcock’s credit that she bridges that difficult gap between specialists and laypeople with a style and grace that is redolent of renowned medical communicators Oliver Sacks and Atul Gawande. With 'Dear Life', Hitchcock shows how comfortable she is with the long-form essay by writing a compelling account of how this country treats its elderly and dying, and how we may better perform this task. It is a masterful, timely achievement that will prompt much soul-searching in its readers and conversations among their friends and family, for this is one topic that cannot be avoided. One day death will claim us all, and it is important we prepare ourselves and our loved ones for this, emotionally, spiritually and physically. My grandfather was in the final stages of terminal cancer as I read 'Dear Life', and at times it became hard to see the pages through tears. He died in hospital on Sunday, March 15, aged 82. His health had declined considerably since I last saw him at the beginning of the year, in a different hospital. As Hitchcock writes, his case is typical of end-of-life care: while surveys state that the overwhelming majority of Australians wish to die at home, only 14 per cent of the population achieve that wish. The reality is most elderly people require constant medical attention in their final weeks and hospitals provide the best locale for such care. The author is no stranger to this reality, having watched her father and grandmother die in hospital and hospice, respectively, and having felt the terrible burden of having to make decisions about their treatment as the sole medically trained member of a non-medical family. “A good death — an ideal death — is pre-planned, perfectly timed, excretion-free, speedy, neat and controlled,” she writes. “Birth is not like this. Life is not like this. And yet we think we have a right to ask it of death.”The narrative of 'Dear Life' is split into short chapters that are peppered with references to research papers and contemporary articles in publications such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic and The Age. At no point does the author become bogged down in technical jargon or statistical minutiae. Her tone remains measured and warm throughout; perhaps she imagined writing it for her non-medical family. It is a wise stylistic decision, as there is much more to be gained from speaking plainly about this matter than by muddling the message with too much science, as it were.Still, Hitchcock frequently impresses with her precise turns of phrase: “It is difficult for us to think about our own death, except as a kind of puppet show, with ourselves watching as a spectator,” she writes early on. Later, when recalling how her grandmother stopped breathing in her arms, she concludes the anecdote with this quietly devastating sentence: “And then I can’t tell you how still she became.”'Dear Life' flits between wider societal examinations of attitudes towards death, medical perspectives on treating the elderly and Hitchcock’s anecdotes from the field, caring for her patients and occasionally going beyond the call of duty by following up with the frail and lonely once they have left her workplace. These vivid vignettes are among the essay’s standout moments, particularly the case of Fred, an 84-year-old man who arrived in Hitchcock’s hospital soon after the death of his wife and dog, utterly miserable, essentially requesting euthanasia. Through her kind words, her persistence and optimism, the doctor turned her patient around; two weeks after his discharge, he sounded exuberant on the phone, having taken a retired show dog into his care under the proviso that it would be returned to the breeder should anything happen to Fred.Hitchcock’s doubt, pain and empathy are all on display throughout 'Dear Life'. One gets the impression that the author has an impeccable bedside manner and that she is just the type of physician you’d wish to care for you at any stage of your life, but especially near the end, where the gap between palliative care and a few extra years of life can be as small as a written instruction by a rushed, dismissive doctor who sees all treatment of the elderly as inherently futile.Yet Hitchcock is not prescriptive in this text. She acknowledges the essay does not offer simple solutions. “My chief aim,’’ she writes, “is to strike a note of caution and to make explicit something that often remains unsaid and yet can be heard quite clearly: that the elderly are burdensome, bankrupting, non-productive. That old age is not worth living.” This duality of opposing professional views — empathy and despair for the plight of the aged — is the essay’s central driving force, and it is not wrestled with lightly. Towards the end, Hitchcock writes:"The young rule the world; we stomp around doling out mean rations to the old, the machinery of our secure, quiet bodies purring to us the myth that we will be young forever. And, one by one, my patients retreat to small nursing-home rooms and then slip away. Soon they will all be gone. And then it will be your turn and mine to sit in cells and drink the weak tea they hand out at eleven and two, hoarding biscuits in our fridges. Not dead, yet."In 'Dear Life', Hitchcock has laid out her most important work to date in the type of clear, rational, respectful prose that the topic demands. As much as our natural instinct may be to avert our gaze from death, to push it from our minds at every opportunity, this essay is inspirational and aspirational in its scope. It is highly recommended to all those who hold life dear, and especially to those whose professional lives are devoted to helping us through illness and death with dignity.(This review was originally published in The Weekend Australian on 21 March 2015: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/arts/books/karen-hitchcocks-dream-delivering-dignity-in-the-face-of-death/story-e6frg8nf-1227269557188)

Balanced yet profound By Nigel Kirk The issues of geriatric and end-of-life care are very different, topics which many people tend to avoid, either through not contemplating the lives of those who have done much but are becoming a burden, or by confiding that if ever they themselves were in such a position, early despatch would be desirable. These views usually change, even reverse, when older age has come, when the small discomforts aren’t as bad as the alternative. Sometimes. Other times, life is less wonderful and a blanket approach to end-of-life options is discordant with reality The rationalisation of public health that leads to pigeonholing both policy and people in aged care facilities is just as abrasive as the platitude that extended life expectancy is a societal boon. There are gaping disconnects, aching ironies and, sadly, a lack of debate beyond the realm of the bean-counters on this central and growing issue.Hitchcock tackles problems, options and outcomes at a personal level, through the lives and experiences of patients and health care professionals. She traverses the terrain between love, empathy and pragmatism deftly but without an ounce of dismissal. A friend said that everyone must read this essay, alas I fear many will not because of the unease the topic generates. They will be the poorer. Hitchcock’s essay is a brief (70 pages, contrary to the blurb), balanced and profoundly caring treatment of this topic and I am indebted to her for her insights.

By Bruce Buchanan Medically based articles dealing with the end of life in a realistic and caring manner are infrequent. The essay appears written in response to a proposal of fluffy aspiration set out in a Grattan Institute article that gives the impression the authors have never been personally involved with the dying. The essayist has experience, is aware that as with birth and life itself, death takes many forms. With death realism is important, as the effort to avoid finality that much writing attempts is false and misleading. Highly recommended for app and particularly any persons facing a death situation, for themselves or those for whom they care.

John V. Lindsay was elected mayor of New York City in 1965. But that year’s mayoral campaign will forever be known as the Buckley campaign. “As a candidate,” Joseph Alsop conceded, “Buckley was cleverer and livelier than either of his rivals.” And Murray Kempton concluded that “The process which coarsens every other man who enters it has only refined Mr. Buckley.”The Unmaking of a Mayor is a time capsule of the political atmosphere of America in the spring of 1965, diagnosing the multitude of ills that plagued New York and other major cities: crime, narcotics, transportation, racial bias, mismanagement, taxes, and the problems of housing, police, and education. Buckley’s nimble dissection of these issues constitutes an excellent primer of conservative thought.A good pathologist, Buckley shows that the diseases afflicting New York City in 1965 were by no means of a unique strain, and compared them with issues that beset the country at large. Buckley offers a prescient vision of the Republican Party and America’s two-party system that will be of particular interest to today’s conservatives. The Unmaking of a Mayor ends with a wistful glance at what might have been in 1965—and what might yet be.

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Buckley for Mayor By Stephen Darlington The Unmaking of a Mayor is the story of the unique campaign of William F. Buckley, Jr. for New York City Mayor in 1965. At this point in his life, the 39-year-old Buckley had founded National Review, published six books (including God and Man at Yale), had a syndicated column in hundreds of newspapers across the country, run the John Birch Society out of the conservative movement, and had energized the conservative wing of the Republican party to a point that it nominated Barry Goldwater for president in 1964. With this long list of accomplishments, why would he run for mayor? That's one of the questions this book answers. In the mid-1960's, many people thought New York City was ungovernable, broken, and on an unreversible course of decline. Many of the city's problems will sound familiar with those of us who remember the period before Rudy Giuliani's election in 1993. Buckley opens the book with an account of the political system of New York, with its intricate third party laws, and follows on with a history of the previous 30 years of governance. Then he delves into what John V. Lindsay, the liberal congressman and presumptive GOP nominee, and Bill Buckley were doing in the spring of 1965.It is customary to call any third party candidate "unserious" because they have no legitimate shot of winning and they typically have a few kook positions. Buckley was under no illusions of his chance at winning. In a famous exchange from the campaign, a reporter asked him what would be the first thing he'd do if he was elected. Buckley quipped, "Demand a recount." But reading his position papers, reprinted in total with reactions from the press and the other candidates, shows he really thought through the problems facing New York. You don't have to agree with all of his proposals, but the position papers were a very compelling and thought-provoking part of the book to read. The typical politician's position papers are vague, gauzy pieces of fluff that aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Candidate Smith promises to balance the budget by eliminating waste and closing loopholes. But Buckley's papers actually offered concrete solutions. Bad Traffic? Reserve one lane in the Holland and Lincoln tunnels for buses. Allow delivery trucks to only park on odd-numbered streets on Mondays and Wednesdays and even-numbered streets on Tuesdays and Fridays. Pollution? Convert city buses to liquefied petroleum gas. Add control devices to city vehicles to reduce emissions. Modernize municipal incinerators. But the position papers also reveal some of the oddities associated with third party candidates. Buckley's traffic proposal included a Bikeway to travel above Second Avenue from 125th Street to 1st Street. His proposal for the drug problem included moving addicts to special housing so they don't get others addicted to narcotics. His affordable housing platform had something similar. Of course, twenty years after World War II, his opponents pounced on these relocation ideas as "concentration camps".So why did Buckley run? Part of it was to counter the leftward lurch of the Republican party under the leadership of Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller. Many people were predicting that Lindsay would be the GOP standard bearer in 1968 or 1972 if he became mayor. The other reason was because he saw Lindsay and Abe Beame, the Democratic nominee, as mealy mouthed politicians who would throw bromides at each other and not discuss the things that were actually wrong with New York City.Unmaking of a Mayor is a bracing, sometimes hilarious, account of the race and the personalities involved. It shows the difference between career politicians and those with something to say about government. Sometimes I wish people would take more risks and speak plainly about the issues as Buckley did. It's well worth the read for anyone interested in political history, New York history, and public policy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A gem! By Dani K A great look at the past, reflecting right into our days. Buckley feels familiar and "cozy", while being his raw self! This book is a gem, something I will cherish and read over, and over, and over...Amazing read!

0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Timeless classic. By alman5555 Timeless clasic. Although its been fifty years since this was written, its still topical today. Mr Buckley faced a hostile liberal media then , just as are todays candidates for office. Not much has changed, whenever you criticize urban policy you are automatically branded a racist as Mr Buckley found out back then. But like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, Mister Buckley fought back with the facts and his own sense of humor. Reading this book, I realized that Mr Buckley was a man way ahead of his time. He was a proponent of clean energy decades before anyone else, and his plans for bike lanes in NYC were eventually built by Mayor Bloomberg. A man ahead of his time, intelligent and funny, this is one of Mr. Buckleys best efforts. Highly recommended.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. well-rounded, covers the basics By Gavin The author draws distinctions with other related studies like cosmology, while also drawing comparisons, as astronomy involves multiple fields (physics, math, chemistry, etc). The book is very well-organized and covers the various galaxies and planets. It is a well-rounded book for beginners, such as myself. I remember first becoming interested in planets when I read Sir Ken Robinson's "The Element" and he used an example to show how insignificant we really are. Trying to conceive the vastness of our universe is a difficult feat, but I figure that it's worth learning more about. The author is humble enough to admit at the end that there is soo much we have yet to learn and that this book doesn't contain all the information, but it's a great place to begin.

Supportive advice from someone who’s been there By Rhonda Bloom Attaining that sense of certainty in your subconscious mind that it is possible to achieve your dreams is the message here. The author is a life coach and shares his strategies about how to build your self-esteem and self-confidence. Most people have struggled with this at least at some time in their life, but you can choose what to focus on, and it helps to realize that everyone has insecurities. The author shares a lot of his personal experiences and the techniques he used to become a happier, more confident person.

There are 2 exercises given that are different than the typical ones and they actually may help. The grammatical and spelling errors are plentiful which is sad, as the content is good. It is almost as if someone typed this up from dictation, someone who's first language is not English.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Why? By Karen Malone I do not understand why this book is titled "for kids". There are twenty-four paintings but not a word about them other than their title. I was hoping this book would explain some of the paintings for my children, but am very disappointed.

See the #1 rated painting (Guernica) for under a dollar By Amazon Customer What a group of 24 paintings from probably the #1 painter of the 20th century. He has 2 in the top 10 (Guernica & Demoiselles of d'avignon-sp?). There is not so much of his later paintings, little of his red and blue paintings (a close friend died) and no bulls (my favorites). But most of the mainstays are there and I love it. "Woman who cried" (cited here as sobbing woman) which set the record for original lithograph was especially welcome. How a copy of a painting, even a first edition original lithograph, could fetch over $10 million is beyond me. Wish I had a couple. Great intro to his work. Since he was the most prolific artist ever, one could spend a lifetime examining his artistry...shu

My Virtual Reality Trip to the Louvre, Paris Part 3 of 12 By Don Kidwell Spanish Paintings once again : Having said adios to Goya we moved onto Picasso which I wasn't about to pass by. Alongside the ever impressive "Guernica" was a portrait of "The Weeping Woman" of which my daughter Mary said"This guy has some creepy stuff, dad, just like Halloween." And thank you for reminding me of my favorite holiday. Let's move along to Kahlo next. And if you are wanting to start the tour from the beginning please back up to da Vinci if you like.

He'd be perfect if he wasn't getting married … and if he wasn't about to become her stepbrother.

Romantic humor has never been so deliciously tempting. It's been a rough day for Ella Roberts. First, her social-climbing mother Valerie dragged her to yet another wedding -- something that always reminds Ella that real life offers few happily-ever-afters. Second, Valerie's goal isn't to have fun at the event, but to schmooze clients for the family wedding business that Ella’s hated forever. And third (after too much wine, and being mocked by her black sheep sister for "letting Mom bind you with her bitch chains"), Ella gets a text from her latest disposable boyfriend, Chase: NOT WORKING OUT. SORRY. I HAVE YOUR GYM SHOES. But things are finally looking up. The handsome, charming, successful man Ella meets at the bar fills her with flutters and makes everything better. Gazing into Nathan Hayes's kind blue eyes, Ella can almost believe that love at first sight is true after all. It's too bad that in just two months, Ella's mother will be marrying Nathan's father … in a double wedding with Nathan and his fiancee Natasha. She should run from her feelings for Nathan. She should back away and find a new mediocre man to amuse her. But Ella’s been unlucky in love too many times to ignore what she feels … and so for Ella, "taboo" turns to "game on" instead. This romantic comedy about love, temptation, and the desires that drive us is the first humorous contemporary romance from Lexi Maxxwell, author of La Fleur de Blanc, Together Apart, A Temptation in Time, and many more. This tale's romantic humor is spot on … and will keep you longing, laughing, and turning the pages in time with your quickly beating heart.

What early readers are saying about My Stepbrother the Groom:

"Hilarious! I couldn't put it down." "I don't normally go in for the whole 'stepbrother stepsister romance' idea, but Lexi did so well, it's not even funny. Wait, that's a lie. It was STUPIDLY funny." “My Stepbrother the Groom had EVERYTHING I wanted — romance, groom with maybe-warm maybe-cold feet, lots of laughs, and the sort of happily ever after I love most. I can’t recommend it enough!”

I got about 25% through it, had an iPad mishap, thought I lost it, frantically tried to contact NetGalley and even Lexi Maxxwell about getting a replacement copy, and then was able to reload it, thanks to a somewhat precipitous backup I had happened to do. I thought - I hoped - that it would get better.Aaaannnnndddd ... not so much.It isn't that this is a bad book as much as it just feels rather lifeless and uninspiring. It feels overly familiar, in a "where have I read you before" kind of way.Let's look at the synopsis: Ella works with (but really for) her mother in a job she hates, is in a relationship with a guy she doesn't like all that much, gets dumped by text, has a glass of wine too many to salve her wounded heart, and winds up confiding in a gorgeous stranger with whom she feels an instant connection. Only - whoopsie! - he's the son of the man her mother is about to marry, and the gorgeous stranger is engaged to be married himself. So, yeah, that sounds like something you've already read, doesn't it? I'd be okay with that if Maxxwell had interesting characters or something to add through her writing. Neither is there, though, and that's a disappointment.Ella herself is annoying and immature, to the point where I prayed she would get dumped by everyone and have to start over. I think I'm supposed to feel for her because she isn't doing what she wants to do with her life and she isn't in a relationship. But she's so whiny and unappealing that I felt as if she had what she deserved. Another weakness is her sister Carly, who contradicts herself at every turn. I could not figure out why Carly was so awful to Ella (aside from Ella being such a pill), but it turns out that there is an answer for that, and, in fact, that answer is the best part of the book. Nathan, our hero, is likable and interesting, and I wish this had been told from his perspective because he is by far most interesting character.Maxxwell uses a lot of humor in her writing, which helps make Ella a bit more endearing than she actually is. I liked what Maxxwell tried to do more in theory than in practice. The idea - a girl falls for a guy she can't have - is cute and ripe for romantic writing. I just couldn't get past Ella and Carly. They seemed too rote for me.Review copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.Published on VoxLibris.net@VoxLibris

By Brandi I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewI have no idea what I was expecting, but the amount of humor I found in this book definitely wasn't it. This book just worked for me.Ella works for her mother, Valerie, as a stylist. Because her mother is awesome--or overbearing, whichever--she drags Ella to a wedding to meet someone. Ella doesn't want to be at this wedding. Her date is her mother and her mother is criticizing her for her choices in men. Luckily for Ella, her boyfriend of choice breaks up with her in a text message. Ella handles it like any normal, 27 year old girl would: she hits the bottle. While attempting to get the bartender to serve her before the wedding even begins--to no avail, I might add--a man walks up and convinces the bartender to serve her. Ella and this man, Nathan, sit down and talk. Or they talk as well as expected given Ella's level of intoxication. A brief convo and a brushing of hands has Ella convinced that this is the man she will marry.Yes. There is insta-love. It doesn't usually do it for me, but for some reason it did here. There is so much more here and I won't ruin it for you. I relate to Ella in the "I used to create relationships in my head and get heartbroken when they didn't pan out" kind of way. It's something I feel like other women can relate to. It's that, or Ella and I are in the minority and are completely weird. *shrugs*Yes, I liked this book. Yes, I recommend this book. Want a good laugh? Here ya go! Is there a HEA? Of course there is! In fact, there are 3 HEAs!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good read! By Carrie G. I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. When Ella Roberts’ attends a wedding with her overly controlling mother Valerie she gets a text from her boyfriend telling her it’s over between them. After somewhat causing a scene by calling him back and yelling at him just before the wedding Ella heads to the bar to demand a drink. A handsome stranger, Nathan Hayes, gets the bartender to oblige Ella and has a brief conversation with her. Ella then declares to her sister she’s met the man she’s going to marry. After the service Valerie introduces Ella to her fiance, which happens to be Nathan’s father. Not only is Ella’s mother planning to marry her new dream man’s father which would make them step-siblings but Nathan is also engaged to be married to Natasha and the two couples are planning a double ceremony in two months.I honestly had a tough time in deciding how to rate this book. As a romance I think it failed horribly and some readers may be completely disappointed if they are expecting the typical two people meeting and falling in love romance. But on the other had it was funny, entertaining and kept me turning the pages throughout.Ella was quite honestly a complete basket case throughout the story. She got it in her head that she felt something with Nathan she’d never felt before and that he just had to feel the same. Sometimes bordering on stalkerish tendencies with her complete obsession of her instant connection. That being said I kind of think of this like coming across an accident on the side of the road, you know you shouldn’t look but just end up having to do it anyway. For myself though, I do like a wide variety of genres and I ended up completely entertained reading this story. I would warn though if looking for just romance this probably wouldn’t be for you. But if you would like a good laugh then this somewhat dysfunctional family, that could all use a bit of therapy, would probably give it to you.

No More Rejection, by Jorge Vazquez

Review "No More Rejection, by Jorge Vazquez tackles the core issues dealing with rejection. I, myself, got completely mangled through the rejection cycle, but I also found the way to break it off of my life forever through supernatural LOVE. Do you want to live this short life that you've been given on earth as a truly happy person? Do you want to experience real, tangible freedom? Do you want to walk in peace and confidence Then No More Rejection, by Jorge Vazquez, is for you." Brian "Head" Welch New York Times best-selling author of Save Me From Myself, co-Founder of KoRn “What an honor it is for me to endorse No More Rejection, the new book by my friend Jorge Vazquez. In No More Rejection, Jorge exposes and methodically dismantles one of the most subtle and universally effective threats against the success of God’s people in the earth―and that threat is rejection. He invites us to take a look in the mirror and face the often-ugly truth of the rejection we’ve faced, as well as the rejection we’ve perpetrated. And he challenges us to take courage, to step out of the cycle of perpetual rejection and offense, and to step into victory in God’s unconditional love. What a blessing No More Rejection has been to me; as I’m sure it will be for many, many others as well!” Mattie Montgomery Evangelist, Author, and Lead Singer of For Today “Jorge uses the truth of the scriptures to take us through a spiritual surgery. As you read this, allow the Holy Spirit to move into the cracks and crevices of your heart to remove any lingering, useless words or acts of rejection. The very rejection used against us is exactly what God will use for His glory to reveal the finished work! This book will help you discover how to reject the lies of this world and embrace the truth of acceptance.” Beckah Shae Christian Singer/Song Writer “Rejection is something that every one of us face and struggles with at some point throughout our lives. It can cause us to compromise our values, hold us back from our calling, yet sadly when we are honest, it’s also something we have inflicted on others at some point in our lives. In his new book, Jorge lays bare the universal struggle we all face with rejection and how it shapes our self-image and actions. Backed up by over 103 scriptures from the Bible, Jorge makes it clear that rejection is not from God, but rather we are God’s masterpiece made in God’s image and loved by God to be both recipients and conduits of His love. This book is a great resource for all of us who have experienced the human condition of rejection and need a fresh reminder of these truths.” Mark McCallie JUCE TV “I love How Jorge didn’t just talk about problems in this book. He shared from His heart the spirit led solutions to bring forth freedom to the captives of rejection. I highly recommend this book to any and all who have experienced the spirit of rejection.” Paul Lackie Frontline International “From rejection to NO More Rejection is exactly what Jesus died to redefine. In that moment when the Father turned away, maybe Jesus would know how we all feel at times, Rejected. Did the story end there? Will yours? My thought would be to pick up this book, open it, read it and all the while have it be a guide post on the journey to a empty tomb, for you.” Eric Samuel Timm Orator, Artist, Author “Radical times require radical answers. No More Rejection calls God’s people to take their eyes off their own hurts and rejection, lay down offenses, and become Jesus’ heart and hands to a needy culture. Every nation is ripe for a spiritual revolution. No More Rejection may just be the spark that sets the Church―and the entire world― ablaze with God’s revolutionary Love. Highly recommended.” Dr. Harvey R. Brown, Jr. President, Impact Ministries, Inc. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee “From his personal experience and sound knowledge of scripture, Jorge offers a solid base for Christians desiring to break free from rejection. He explains that supernatural love received from Christ is the key to living a truly free, yet powerfully effective life.” Neil Elliott Director of Special Projects UCB UK

By Elliot Man, this book is for anyone (like me) that has faced rejection so many times that it affects how you approach people. Jorge Vazquez really showed me in this book how there is a cycle of rejection that steals joy and favor. I'd recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves hesitant to step out (or anyone who is experiencing a 'lack of favor') in their lives. There's a way out!

Review ...by far the most comprehensive textbook available on the topic of hyperbaric medicine and its clinical applications... Dr. Jain and colleagues have done an exceptional job in providing a current understanding of the principles regarding HBO and its clinical applications in today's medical setting... I would recommend this textbook for anyone studying HBO and for those who wish to know more about its practical applications. --John W. Calvert, M.D., John H. Zhang, M.D., Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Loma Linda, CA, in Journal of Neurosurgery, Volume 102, May, 2005...the most comprehensive reference text of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)... a valuable reference source for those working in hyperbaric medicine... --P. Moore, Sacramento, CA, in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Vol. 34, No. 6, December 2006This textbook should be available, as a reference, in any institution dealing with patients presenting with conditions amenable to hyperbaric medicine treatment approaches. It is also a 'must read' in the armamentarium of providers of hyperbaric medicine. --Col. Thomas N. Little, USAR, MC, FS, (Ret) in Military Medicine, December 2004This is a comprehensive book on the medical modality of treating patients with higher than atmospheric pressure. This modality has progressed slowly as the infrastructure is highly complex and not commonly thought of by attending physicians. The author and contributors have presented a well written compendium of the physiology of, indications for, and successes of hyperbaric therapy... This is a valuable book for every major medical library. Although its focus is on a specific group of tertiary care practitioners, it is a tremendous resource for practitioners and researchers. --Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP in Doody's Book Review, September 2009This textbook should be available, as a reference, in any institution dealing with patients presenting with conditions amenable to hyperbaric medicine treatment approaches. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Revealing and a good read By Dr. Max Sutherland It was easy to read and I learnt a lot from this book including a number of things that really surprised me. For example that most addicts are addicted to more than one drug. Much of the book's story is conveyed through the sometimes frighteningly frank interviews that the authors conducted with addicts, reformed users and social workers in the field. Seeing drug addiction starkly through their eyes is revealing and at times, confronting. Great to see the need for law reform threaded all the way through the book too. It is further support for the 2012 conclusions of the Australia21 think tank “The prohibition of illicit drugs is killing and criminalising our children and we are all letting it happen”.Most importantly, I quite enjoyed reading this book and that rarely happens for me with non-fiction books.

The study of network theory is a highly interdisciplinary field, which has emerged as a major topic of interest in various disciplines ranging from physics and mathematics, to biology and sociology. This book promotes the diverse nature of the study of complex networks by balancing the needs of students from very different backgrounds. It references the most commonly used concepts in network theory, provides examples of their applications in solving practicalproblems, and clear indications on how to analyse their results. In the first part of the book, students and researchers will discover the quantitative and analytical tools necessary to work with complex networks, including the most basic concepts in network and graph theory, linear and matrix algebra, as well as the physical concepts most frequently used for studying networks. They will also find instruction on some key skills such as how to proof analytic results and how to manipulate empirical network data. The bulk of the text is focused on instructingreaders on the most useful tools for modern practitioners of network theory. These include degree distributions, random networks, network fragments, centrality measures, clusters and communities, communicability, and local and global properties of networks. The combination of theory, example andmethod that are presented in this text, should ready the student to conduct their own analysis of networks with confidence and allow teachers to select appropriate examples and problems to teach this subject in the classroom.
