Yes, our past makes us who we are today but it IS possible to rise above no matter who difficult the struggle. Darcy Scott has taken scenic Maine and made it the setting for this story of 'Mahgell' Mattews and her vehement hold on her emotions and almost manic care of her daughter Simi. Dealing with the memories and continuing mental abuse of her dying mother she isolates herself to protect her heart and what stability she has created. Small town life in Mosquito Harbor is the salve she unknowingly needs to heal, and to raise her spark of a daughter! Scotts characters come to life with vivd personalities....my favorite being Alva- the level-headed patriach of the local lobstering and boatyard family. My one wish was that i could stick my nose into the pages and come away with the aroma of that salt air! And maybe the ending came wayyyy too soon??!!

I want to spend time in this coastal town in Maine and drink coffee with Alva. I am normally a lover of fast paced mysteries but this story captured me form the start to the very end.

Perfect for Maine lovers By halev Darcy Scott calls this her “auto-bio novel—a semi-autobiographical take on escaping a toxic family situation,” which she has been “writing and rewriting over the course of the last fifteen years.” She told me when I chose it for review at a Maine Authors Publishing Workshop that it was her “dark” novel. I feared being immersed in ghost or macabre fiction, which does not interest me. Rather it is a deeply insightful portrayal of a Margel’s recovery from her past and of a coastal Maine fishing village where she has settled. The undercurrents of romantic and financial interests among the village inhabitants are most vividly portrayed. An unforgettable centerpiece of the story is Flo’s restaurant full of colorful characters including Elmer who announces loudly the name of each entering person. The multitude of scenes, from the past and elsewhere in the village, become vividly alive in the author’s hands. The darkness in the story is the toxic family situation of the protagonist’s youth, which still lives with her and, through her, threatens her young daughter. The portrayal of the protagonist’s coming to terms with herself in that village is deftly handled with sensitive insight. For me, the takeaway value was that I came away enriched by having learned something of the inner life of a most skillful author, Darcy Scott.Hale Bradt, July 2015Hale Bradt is the author of the trilogy, Wilber’s War: An American Family’s Journeys through World War II (Van Dorn Books).

Provides A Peek Deep Inside China - By Loyd Eskildson State engagement in health government governance is a relatively recent development in rapidly modernizing China - the government's first health-care moves post-Mao were to withdraw from the sector, acerbating problems of cost, access, and equality; average life expectancy rose by only five years between 1981 and 2009, compared to an increase of almost 33 years during the Mao era (1949-1980). To be fair, its initial improvements (35 to 67.9) came from a much lower base, yet other nations have improved more from a similar base in recent years.Infant/maternal mortality has made considerable strides recently. Infant mortality in China decreased from 38 deaths/1,000 live births in 1990 to 16 in 2010, and the mortality rate for children under five dropped from 48 per 1,000 live births to 18. The maternal mortality ratio has also fallen, from 110 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 38 in 2008.Another substantial improvement - TB cases in 2010 China were estimated at 216 per 100,000, down 45% from 2000.Chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular are the leading causes of death in China - with pollution contributing to at least the cancer death rates. Public opinion surveys in 2009 ranked health care and food and drug safety as among the nation's top three concerns. A major contributor was the introduction of market-oriented reform w/o adequate rule of law.Industrial pollution is not the only instance of conflict between economic and health goals. China has one-third of the world's smokers and suffers about one million related deaths/year; its cardiovascular disease death exceeds that in the U.S.Author Huang suggests separating public hospital ownership from management and ceasing the use of drug sales as the main revenue source for hospitals, similar to Taiwan. (Of every $100 spent on U.S. health care, $10-$12 goes for drugs, in China it is $40-$45.) He also suggests replacing fee-for-service with DRG and capitation to give those hospitals incentive to hold down costs and improve accountability. As for food and drug safety, Huang sees weak enforcement as the greatest problem, sometimes based on 'political consideration' (corruption), especially at the local level. This problem is acerbated by the absence of press freedom.The 'good news' is the incoming president Xi Jinping has pledge to bring higher levels of health care to China's people - Beijing plans to triple its health care spending to $1 trillion by 2020.Bottom-Line: China spent less than 5% of GDP on health care in 2005, vs. 16% in the U.S. and 10% in Canada. However, China's advantage in purchasing power parity leads author Huang and others to probably overstate the crisis in China's health-care as far as financial commitment is concerned; this is especially likely given that the author's estimates of government spending have been labeled as far too low (Tang, Baris). It also has initiated a program of encouraging Western hospitals to invest in China. A third major initiative - expanding health insurance to universal levels by 2020 (now reportedly at over 94%, though at low benefit levels that focus on in-patient care).

By Joe This is an amazing introduction to where Jon will be taking us on his upcoming short stories that he plans to write. His thoughts and perception on quantum physics and time as it is perceived as vertical and horizontal invites the reader to question their own experience of time. The story is short and I particularly like the lines “Time flies when you are having fun or drags when you are bored, but perception of time in our memory works the opposite way, so a year spent traveling seems longer in memory than a year at the office. Time becomes meaningless without memory and we humans have a unique consciousness that allows us to live in the past or in the future" and "Being fully present in the moment, that’s true quality time" because there is such a profound truth to what he has written here. I personally find the study of quantum mechanics and metaphysics fascinating and how it makes one question their experience here on earth. I feel that this book has been a crack in the door that will lead his readers to a lot of mind expansion and personal growth through a deeper understanding of time and the quantum possibilities of a spirit having a human experience.Time is a man made concept, nothing more....but it is the strongest chains that keep man bound.

By Danielle Tara Evans This review is also posted on my blog: http://theshortreviewer.blogspot.com/This short story is a little hard for me to review--even though I've been reading mostly short works lately, this one is shorter than most as it's considered flash fiction. It's a story or an "essay" on time, and I ended up reading it twice to make sure I could fully grasp what the author was conveying.It's definitely the type of story that gets the wheels in your brain going! The line that stood out to me the most was this one: “Time flies when you are having fun or drags when you are bored, but perception of time in our memory works the opposite way, so a year spent travelling seems longer in memory than a year at the office." How true is that?This thought provoking piece won't take you long to read, but you will still be thinking about it even after you're finished.

A short piece densely populated with topics to ponder By Danielle This is a charming, tiny piece that scratches the surface of such dense topics as time, consciousness, resolutions, past and future.A lengthy synopsis is unneeded and unwarranted due to the length of this work, so I will just end with the conviction that anything with the following line in it is worth a read:"Maybe, but cats don't make New Year's resolutions...."

Kulinski The Awakening is a truly astounding work of art, all the more compelling as it arises from a genre, Christian literature, that has been a dim light in the field of literature, to say the least. I am reluctant to even write a review on this book as I feel completely handicapped in relating how much Angela Hunt means to me. Since becoming a Christian I became both lost and found; found in Christ, but lost in the world. Everything I had once loved, the literature, the art, movies, it all now lacked that God-spark and spirit. When I would reach for Christian fiction I was deflated by the lack of creativity, intelligence, percision of language, not to mention the ability to bridge my spirit. Books have always been my bridge to the world, my path to feeling connected and understood and so for the last 3 1/2 year I have been flailing as no contemporary Christian writer came even close to creating a connection in me. Then came Angela Hunt onto the shelves of my church library and what a blessing she is. She never cowers from asking a tough question that one of a weaker faith would fear to ask, let alone satisfyingly tackle. In The Awakening we have Aurora, the significance of the name not lost, trapped by lies built up as stakes supposedly to keep her safe. I related deeply to this woman who connects to the world through books, and is somewhat wary of the human heart. She is in want of nothing, rich, intelligent, attractive, but she is disconnected from the world, from her heart and from her soul and her mind is becoming unseamed as it knows she needs the truth to survive, but is Aurora strong enough to let the truth enter her world? Gently a neighbor helps Aurora see the light, the light of truth, of God, of her own being and she lifts those stakes of lies and realizes she is not alone, she is not helpless. I would recommend this book to anyone as a testimony to the power of Christ and as a testimony that there really is a contemporary Christian writer who knows her way around a pen. Thank you Angela Hunt.

Too easily I can put down even the most engaging of books. But there are some that pull me back every spare second I have. The Awakening was such a book. Angela Hunt has created a world within a world, guiding the reader through the life of an agoraphobic, and an appealing one at that. Ms. Hunt deals with faith issues with a light, yet authentic touch, which is highly appropriate considering the story itself is a parable telling of how much God loves us and wants to be with us. I find that Angela Hunt matures year by year, book by book.I thought about this story long after I turned the last page.

She has spent much of her twenties and thirties as her mother's caregiver, but after the Alzheimer's-stricken Mary Elizabeth dies, Aurora (herself stricken with agoraphobia) rattles aimlessly around their Manhattan apartment. Despite the nosy-parker attentions of her mother's oldest friend and neighbor Clara Bowman, and in spite of the much gentler inquiries from her newest friend and neighbor, Philip Cannon, Aurora finds that things for her are falling apart and she has no center. One of the reasons Aurora has no center to hold on to is because her mother's death leaves her a de facto orphan. Her father, Theodore Norquest, a wildly successful popular novelist, left the family before she was born and she has never received any communication from him. Slowly, as Aurora begins to explore what she might do now, she rekindles the interest she has always had simmering about contacting her father. This is where Philip, a software engineer of about her own age, comes in handy --- he knows how to help Aurora (who can't even make it down to her building's lobby) connect to the world via the Internet (she's been receiving groceries, medicines and other supplies for years from New York City's endless variety of delivery services). While Philip remains gentle in his inquiries and in sharing his faith with Aurora, he obviously wants to help her break out of her cocoon rather than enabling her to remain stuck. However, the darkest horizon is still to come (did you think it was a coincidence that "Aurora" means "dawn?" Not a chance --- but more on that in a moment). Mesmerized by a beautiful woman in a nearby penthouse who has everything, but lives an empty, perhaps morally repugnant, life, Aurora questions whether there is any purpose for her own life and makes a bad decision. When Philip comes to her rescue, bits and pieces of light peek through, and she learns that some of her beliefs about the past aren't accurate. By the story's end, Aurora is living in a new day and, while she has a lot of work ahead of her, has regained her hope and humanity. By setting Aurora in her high-rise apartment, giving sparse details about appearances and situations, and including a somewhat mystical element, Hunt has given her novel an ethereal quality that is very appealing. Does this sound like a fairy tale? It's meant to be: Hunt set out to write something completely different from her previous books --- a parable. Of course, the original parables told by Jesus were simple stories, and although Hunt does keep things simple in THE AWAKENING, her modern artistic viewpoint (and perhaps modern readers' needs, too) means that things are a little more complicated in Aurora's world. That's why it feels more accurate to call this an allegorical novel, along the lines of John Bunyan's classic, THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, than to call it a parable. But in the end that's quibbling over literary terms, since this novel does teach a lesson: we are all searching for Our Father, and so often we don't know how hard He has been trying to reach us. --- Reviewed by Bethanne Kelly Patrick

Disappointing compared to his early work Journey into Consciousness By Rachel W Because the author's previous book, Journey into Consciousness: The Chakras, Tantra and Jungian Psychology, is so impressively written, I bought this book, wondering what it might be like in the realm of "applied spirituality," i.e. applying his meditative insights to past life reading. Note that what he does is not "past life regression" done in the form of hypnotherapy, as is commonly known today. The author simply meets his client, obtain some very basic information about him or her (such as age, occupation, etc.), observe his/her demeanor, and then give a super lengthy reading about this particular person's past lives. This book documents a series of such readings. I find all of them incredulous, but none of them helpful. I mean, you sit down in front of a total stranger, and he tells you that in your past life, you were this and that; and then in another past life, you were this and that... blah blah blah and on and on and on. What do you do? You believe in him? You listen to the incredible stories but, alas, they are really just "stories" to me. How do I establish any validity to them? What do I get out of this? So what if I was an Egyptian princess once and a circus magician another time? Nice stories, very captivating, but how does knowing these information enlighten and guide me in any ways?My biggest problem with this book is that the author doesn't delve deeper into the significance of doing past life readings. At the end, he gave some background info on what karma is, and some New Age beliefs, but nothing deep or insightful.I'd recommend his earlier book "Journey into Consciousness" wholeheartedly. But this book is a huge, total disappointment to me.

Having been brought up Christian, I find his writings especially liberating and enlightening. Most religions, including traditional forms of Buddhism, are mired in fundamentalism. Breaux does a brilliant job of extracting the essence of Tantric Buddhism ("The Tantric Path") and the wisdom teachings of Jesus ("The Quantum Gospel") and conveying them in the context of contemporary psychology and science.Breaux has taught psychic awareness and spiritual healing and worked with clients for some 45 years and writes from personal experience of mystical dimensions of consciousness. His view of our human condition and quest for spiritual transformation is down to earth and focused on a practical application. His writing, though somewhat scholarly and sourced from eclectic bibliographies, is very accessible, presenting complex philosophical concepts concisely.His "The Way of Karma" is the best I've seen on karma and how knowledge of it can best be used in our day-to-day life. "Hot Tamale Baby" is a good read chronicling the adventures of a modern Tantric yogi at play in the mundane reality of the west coast Cajun dance and music scene. I highly recommend all of his books.

Coate Contrary to the review called "Disappointing compared to his early work Journey into Consciousness" I found The Way of Karma most helpful in understanding how mental and emotional habits create the `karma' that is carried over into future lives. His readings clearly show how we develop these patterns and how enlightening it is to see where these patterns originated. The second part of the book showing how to work with karma is the most insightful information about karma that I have ever come across. I couldn't disagree more with the previously stated review...

This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to utilize essential oils. Some of the information given are the different uses of essential oils. We also get to know the methods of essential oils extraction. Benefits of using essential oils is also given importance in this book. I have been always hesitant in using essential oils but those hesitations are gone right after reading this book. So I came to the conclusion that what worked for others did not work for me. But I also realized that there must be other people like me who did not receive any benefits from utilizing the Snellen chart and Bates Method. So I continued researching alternative methods for naturally improving vision. That's when I came across this powerful technique that was by far the most effective way that improved my eyesight—I could not believe how easy it was to implement! Plus, this method does not involve the need for wearing lenses as in plus and minus lens therapy. I went from 20/300 vision to 20/50 in about 8 months! I knew that people deserved to know about this method but then I realized that the vision care industry such as laser eye surgery, eyeglasses and contact lenses is a multi-billion dollar industry. That would explain why most people have never heard about the technique that is discussed in this book. Comprehensive Plastic Surgery Text By Amazon Customer This text has a stellar cast of international authorities in Plastic Surgery; Wayne Morrison, Bryan Mendelson, Philip Blondeel, Tim Marten, Bahman Guyuron, Francois Firmin, Robert Flowers, Susan Mackinnon, Elizabeth Hall-Findlay, Foo Chan Wei, Paul Smith, Stefan Hofer, Brian Sommerlad and many more.It has an excellent reconstructive and aesthetic section. I have been using Grab and Smith and this book is far more comprehensive. I would argue it is the most in depth single volume textbook. As a plastics registrar I find this book extremely easy to read and finding the subject field of interest is a breeze.The schematics and figures are very helpful and mostly, this book might be all you need to pass your fellowship. Extremely happy with this purchase.

By Emmanuel Any photos that could have been added would have helped even say one per class just to get an idea of species of this , the largest phylum of Mammals on Earth and so many coming from South America.

The book shows a carefully and detailed treatment of each taxon at species level. Noticeable, the text includes updated molecular, ecological and also paleontological information. It is totally useful and necessary for studies on extant and also extinct rodents of South America. Selected photographs of dentition could be an excelent option for next edition!.

The accounts update the knowledge on taxonomy, distribution and even ecology for many of the groups that were poorly covered in previous studies.
