Gossipy, intimate, and provocative, and set in Trinidad and New York City, People and Peppers, A Romance gives a diverting peek into the nuances of a Caribbean island’s callaloo of inter-racial and multicultural social mores. James’s main characters are complex, motivated, and fun to know. Tall and handsome, the main protagonist, Vivion K Pinheiro, is the bastard of a half-Portuguese, half Afro-Haitian woman, and an attractive New Yorker with carrot-colored hair who danced beautifully. Accomplished as well, Vivion has earned national prestige as a scholar and athlete. As a young man trying to realize dreams, he can be selfish yet thoughtful, deceptive yet generous—no real villain, just a callow fella getting over by pulling the tricky strings of privilege and personal charm. An important factor in his dream actualization is Vivion’s doting, wealthy mother to whom he confessed an ambition to construct an ecologically sensitive, self-sufficient house on countryside property she bought for him. He imagines the finished structure to be surrounded by a pepper farm that grows Moruga Red Scorpion peppers—the hottest on the planet. A significant stubbing-stone to his ambitions though, is a habit of dodging difficulties—when the goings get tough, Vivion’s gone. How he deals with this failing is only one serving of this fine novel. Of other satisfying portions is the influence of the women in his life. In earlier novels, James’s female characters have been admirable stalwarts and he doesn’t disappoint here. Andaluza, the mother, is an indulgent one. Nikki, the lover, is a strong other. This empathetic novel superbly speaks to women’s compassion and tolerances in the name of love. So let’s live with Vivion as he discovers and submits to the sublime effects of romantic love and father issues. “An unforgettable tale.” —Midwest Book Review, Elizabeth Nunez, Ph.D. “People and Peppers, A Romance, draws on complex interactions between diverse peoples, men and women, from Dominican Republic, Trinidad, New York, and Japan. Kelvin Christopher James captures their intimacies and compromises with fluent, accurate, and tasty expression in an ecology of people and pepper varieties in the field, and with sweet language, they linger on the reader’s mental palate.” —Dr. Brader Brathwaite Praise for Kelvin’s Jumping Ship and Other Stories: “A warm and gifted raconteur.” —New York Times Praise for Secrets, A novel: “Incantatory . . . the finest novel to come out of the Caribbean experience since V.S. Naipaul’s A House for Mr. Biswas.” —Washington Post About the Author Kelvin Christopher James has been the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in Fiction and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Literature. He is the critically-acclaimed author of five novels: Secrets, a Novel (Villard & Vintage & KDP Indie), Fling with a Demon Lover (HarperCollins & KDP Indie), The Sorcerer’s Drum, Web of Freedom, Mooch, the Meek (KDP Indies), and short story collections Jumping Ship and other stories (Villard & KDP Indie), City Lives, Crazy Loves, Backcountry Tales (KDP Indies).

By ADITI SAHA Men are what their mothers made them."----Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American essayist, lecturer, and poet, who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th centuryKelvin Christopher James, a Trinidadian-American author, pens his latest novel, called, People and Peppers, a Romance , which centers around a mother-son relationship with the son's lover being at the center of their love-hate relationship, syncing well with the backdrop of Trinidad and a hot pepper farm.Synopsis:Gossipy, intimate, and provocative, and set in Trinidad and New York City, "People and Peppers, a Romance" gives a diverting peek into the nuances of a Caribbean island’s callaloo of inter-racial and multicultural social mores. James’s main characters are complex, motivated, and fun to know. This story is set in the gorgeous backdrop of Trinidad which is inhabited by interracial people with a myriad of religion and culture interlaced with a mixed race love story. Vivion and Nikki are live-in couples, Vivion is of mixed race whereas Nikki is an Indian Muslim. Vivion is trying to build a ecologically advanced house near the creek in his family pepper farm. Backed by his own influential mother, he travels to America to find an exporter for his best-quality hot peppers. Whereas, all the while, Nikki tries to strengthen the bond between her and with Vivion's powerful mother. The writing is fine and the narration is layered with the native Trinidadian tone, that sometimes proved to be quite difficult to interpret at times, but once the story starts progressing, I got used to the tone and could decipher them easily. The pace is bit slow since the story moves at a snail's pace with all the back-stories of Vivion's college days and his effort to make it big in America, but the conversations between Nikki and Vivion's mother intrigued me a lot.Every other characters reflect that Trinidadian flair in their demeanor, which suited me fine, since I always love to explore how people of a specific country tend to behave in their daily lives. So for me, the book was very insightful for me as I got to see into the lives of these Trinidadian people.Nikki, Vivion and Andaluza are the strong primary characters of this book and their life centers around a pepper farm and empowerment of their livelihood. In short, the story was really very heart-warming and entertaining for me as the author have strikingly portrayed his backdrop onto his canvas.Verdict: If Trinidad is on your mind then do give it a read!

Health care has been called one of the most complex sectors of the U.S. economy. Driven largely by robust innovation in treatments and interventions, this complexity has created an increased need for evidence about what works best for whom in order to inform decisions that lead to safe, efficient, effective, and affordable care. As health care becomes more digital, clinical datasets are becoming larger and more numerous. By realizing the potential of knowledge generation that is more closely integrated with the practice of care, it should be possible not only to produce more usable evidence to inform decisions, but also to increase the efficiency and decrease the costs of doing clinical research.

Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, or PCORnet, is a nation-wide patient-centered clinical research network intended to form a resource of clinical, administrative, and patient data that can be used to carry out observational and interventional research studies and enhance the use of clinical data to advance the learning health care system. The primary goal of the first phase of PCORnet will be to establish the data infrastructure necessary to do such research.

In April and June 2014 the Institute of Medicine's Roundtable on Value and Science-Driven Health Care convened two workshops aimed at accelerating progress toward real-time knowledge generation through the seamless integration of clinical practice and research, one of the fundamental concepts of a continuously learning health system, centered on the development of the PCORnet. The first workshop brought together health care system leaders, both administrative and clinical, and researchers to consider issues and strategic priorities for building a successful and durable clinical research network and facilitate progress toward a continuously learning health care system more broadly, including issues related to science, technology, ethics, business, regulatory oversight, sustainability, and governance. The second workshop focused on implementation approaches. Health system CEOs convened to consider strategic priorities and explore approaches to implementation. These workshops will inform the decisions of field leaders moving forward, including PCORI, the PCORnet steering committee, and PCORnet grantees. Integrating Research and Practice is the summary of the presentations and discussions of the workshops.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Integrating Research and Care By Arete-Zoe Review: Integrating Research and Practice: Health System Leaders Working Toward High-Value Care: Workshop Summary (2015)The Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Value & Science-Driven Health Care introduced an intriguing vision of“a continuously learning health system in which science, informatics, incentives, and culture are aligned for continuous improvement and innovation, with best practices seamlessly embedded in the care process, patients and families active participants in all elements, and new knowledge captured as an integral by-product of the care experience” (p xi).The authors argue that care is often not relevant due to failure to apply the evidence about treatment efficacy as a result of lack of knowledge, accountability, coordination support or insurance, or as the result of misplaced patient expectations (p xi), and that datasets generated through the normal course of health care offer great potential for achieving the “triple aim”—improved care, better health for populations, and reduced health care costs (p 1).The main topics discussed in the book are: Continuous learning and improvement in healthcare, integration of clinical research and practice, sustainability, regulatory oversight and its challenges, and stakeholder culture which accommodates culture of learning and patient and clinician engagement. Continuous learning of organizations is then seen as the utmost priority.Efforts to share information across systems are designed to compare data for quality improvement, benchmarking, for public health and drug safety surveillance (e.g. Mini-Sentinel), for the conduct of pragmatic clinical trials, or comparative effectiveness research (CER) through PCORnet (p 3).In another workshop, Raymond Baxter and Elizabeth McGlynn described the PORTAL network developed by Kaiser Permanente which sees research as a critical part of its strategy (p 21).“PORTAL’s contract with PCORnet focuses its efforts on three specific groups of its 11 million patients: colorectal cancer patients, with an emphasis on treatment and how patients navigate survivorship; 330 adolescents and adults with severe congenital heart disease; and obesity in adults” (p 24).In workshops relating to the integration of clinical research and practice the speakers introduced among other projects REDUCE MRSA trial (p 46), Improve Care Now Network created to transform care for children with inflammatory bowel disease (p 48), and embedding research into clinical care at Group Health, a nonprofit health system with about 600,000 members in Washington State (p 50).In a discussion on learning healthcare systems, Brent James recommended Realistic Evaluation, material that that proposes an alternative to the randomized clinical trial that may be useful for evaluating context-specific interventions, and Meta-Analysis by the Confidence Profile Method, that describes methods that could be used to construct more appropriate designs for testing complex interventions (p58).In section on sustainability, Brent James introduced Intermountain knowledge management system that, according to his experience, saves lives. In addition, the experience suggests that better care is almost always less expensive (p 60).Concerning business imperatives, Thomas Garthwaite said there are a number of factors that can contribute to sustainability: good quality care is the most effective and efficient care, with reduced variable cost, reduced complications, shorter lengths of stay, and engaged nurses who feel more valued and proud of their efforts. Improved staff retention and morale and reputation enhancement are another benefits that can help grow market share (p 63).In section Regulatory oversight, Nancy Kass proposed a new way of thinking about ethics and human research, from the current regulatory definition, to a “learning health care system paradigm” in which research and care are integrated (p 72). The most controversial of the obligations, based on feedback Kass received holds that patients have an obligation to participate in the enterprise of learning (p 75).James Weinstein in his contribution compared RCT and observational trials on spine outcomes. Weinstein and his colleagues found that the RCT was not much better than the observational trial, and that patients had a great deal of decisional regret if they were not involved in the decision-making process. He said that rather than have the process be one of informed consent, it should be one of informed choice, with the patient actively involved in the decision-making process (p 79).Institutional governance of continuous learning activities that can accelerate progress and sustainability was the focus of a panel of brief presentations by James Rohack (Baylor Scott & White Health), Mary Brainerd (HealthPartners), and John Steiner (Institute for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Colorado) (p 86).John Steiner (Kaiser Permanente National Research Council and the HMO Research Network governing board) noted that transformation of research can only occur through transformation of governance. Research studies, he said, need to be larger, of higher quality, using trustworthy, high-quality data and better analytic methods while achieving or maintaining regulatory and fiscal compliance. He also stressed that research needs to be faster, in terms of initiating studies, organizing the contractual relationship between collaborators, and getting studies approved by IRBs; less expensive and more engaging, and has to rely on data collected during the course of routine care (p 92).In section Fostering the well-prepared stakeholder culture Peter Knox presented Bellin Health’s high-performance health care model. This framework holds that for an organization to execute effectively it must think about six dimensions: strategic position (understanding the market, the value proposition, and focus on patients’ important priorities); production system or organizational structure that delivers on the specifications; and a system of measurement that provides insights into how the system is performing. Only then is it time to create a system of improvement, marketing the product, that is to give individual patients diagnosis-to-treatment options within 3days, and finally a high-performance culture that supports creating value at speed (p 98).According to Patrick Conway, sustainability requires that learning become part of the fabric of care and that health care organizations embrace infrastructure support as essential to their survival. Additionally, infrastructure needs to become part of the financial model in a way that enables investments in the research infrastructure that will drive continuous learning to improve population health and the efficiency of care delivery (p 109).Scott Armstrong stressed that an organization can foster a culture in which its leadership team and medical professionals work together consistently to create a virtuous cycle between research and operations to create value at speed (p 109). John Warner added that PCORnet represents an opportunity to build the infrastructure needed to maximize return on the huge investment that health systems have made in EHRs (p 109).As Jonathan Perlin said, there is a strong business case for health care systems that have already made significant investments in information technologies to support research networks. These networks allow the systems to leverage their investments by investigating questions that can be best addressed using data from multiple organizations. Raymond Baxter added that because organizations have a limited supply of intellectual capital, it should be spent on research that produces change for patients; and that the barometer for success is the speed at which research results produce changes in care and outcome (p 119).According to David Labby, there is a concern about the biases inherent in using observational data and about the generalizability and scalability of results. Steven Corwin said that“Taking cost out of the system will not happen without moving toward population health and providing value, and both of those steps require knowledge of the sort that a learning health system can produce. In the absence of knowledge to refine the blunt measurement of cost and utilization, the health care system will bifurcate into one that has hospitals that treat the “haves” and hospitals that treat the “have nots,” which would be problematic for the country as a whole. Privacy and security issues need to be addressed in a way that balances the need for transparency with the concerns of liability” (p 120).From the presented materials it is apparent that there is a strong business case for the utilization of various tools which facilitate learning of healthcare organizations toward improvement of patient outcomes. Tendency toward observational research within real-life context is becoming a trend that may substantially transform clinical research toward greater integration with care. The workshop summary is an essential resource for those who need to stay on top of the latest trends in clinical research.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the comprehensive review that the title suggests By Eugene D Maybe I have only myself to blame here, but in my defence and having re-read the blurb of the book and the documentation on Amazon, I can see how I was mislead. I expected an up-to-date and fascinating overview of psychopathology across multiple cultures with all the 'meta' underpinnings. Instead this book is a clutch of a few different narrowly focussed topics, with each chapter written in the style of a research paper. While the concepts alluded to are interesting, the prose is dense and dry. Don't get me wrong, there are some revealing insights here and a bunch of fresh new ideas - but one could just as easily access these by reading journal articles in Transcultural Psychiatry.

Intuition is the ability to understand something instantly, without the need for conscious reasoning. The Dictionary lists these synonyms: Hunch, Foreknowledge, Inspiration, Perceptivity, Premonition, Presentiment, Gut Feeling, Innate Knowledge, Insight. It also lists the following synonyms, although these are actually different than Intuition: Clairvoyance, Second Sight, Sixth Sense, Discernment, Gut Feeling and Instinct. As a humans evolve to their next higher version, they will live more from intuition than the old body-mind reactions. Contrary to popular belief, intuition is more accurate than any other source. I owe much of my own success and happiness to it. Many of my decisions are made in contradiction to normal reasoning. The purpose of this book is to look at Intuition from many different angles so that you attain a clear sense of this precious gift and take a leap to higher consciousness.

By Thomas I had the privilege of narrating this book for Audible and I cannot tell you what a difference it made in my life, as narrator. This is the 5th book I have recorded for Fred as audiobooks and each time, the books have taken my own life to a much higher level. Fred is one of the prominent thought leaders today. His personal experience as a child (he describes it in Parallel Universes of Self) uniquely gifted him with wisdom and insight that most of us could only wish for. He sees through spiritual eyes. He lives what he teaches, so much of his material is drawn from personal experience. After narrating this book, I instantly found myself hearing intuition more clearly. You can hear an interview with Fred on my podcast - search Subconscious Mind Mastery in iTunes - after the audiobook is released (Mid-Dec 2015 on Audible & iTunes). We are going to talk about key points in the book and Fred will do an intuition coaching call with me. This is amazing material, and having done 5 books with him now, I'd say this impacted my life as much, if not more, than the others. If you want a real one-two punch, get the book and the audiobook and read while you listen. You'll retain more of the material. Then, listen again. I'm on my 3rd time through and will repeat it until all of the rich content becomes a way of life. This is a GREAT book!

I've read dozens of books on this topic and this one is an original with practical ideas for the serious application of this gift. Fred Dodson's book are unlike any others on the market today. To me, they contain the ring of truth that gives me the discipline to practice, review, and apply the knowledge gleaned from the book. The rewards are enormous. Highly recommend.

I listened to the audio book before buying the actual book and am glad I did so. The audiobook serves as a reinforcement to the written word and the book joins my collection of all the many other books I have by this author. This book helps to coach you with practical doable methods and techniques to follow and step-by-step instructions to learn to develop a listening ear to our inner voice, to discern the truth from fiction, trust and become in touch with your feelings, nothing is a co-incidence and all situations are in place for a reason. Excellent examples of how our intuition is always in place and tries to reveal itself to us, but a lot of the time we are not aware of it and ignore. A manual on how to conduct your life in order to dwell in the higher realms and to always know what to do. I highly recommend this book.

While numerous studies have celebrated Thomas Merton's witness as an interfaith pioneer, poet, and peacemaker, there have been few systematic treatments of his Christology as such, and no sustained exploration to date of his relationship to the Russian Sophia" tradition. This book looks to Thomas Merton as a "classic" theologian of the Christian tradition from East to West, and offers an interpretation of his mature Christology, with special attention to his remarkable prose poem of 1962, Hagia Sophia. Bringing Merton's mystical-prophetic Vision fully into dialogue with contemporary Christology, Russian sophiology, and Zen, as well as figures such as John Henry Newman and Abraham Joshua Heschel, the author carefully but boldly builds the case that Sophia, the same theological eros that animated Merton's religious imagination in a period of tremendous fragmentation and violence, might infuse new vitality into our own.

A study of uncommon depth and scope, inspired throughout by Merton's extraordinary catholicity.

Sophia: The Hidden Christ of Thomas Merton, by Christopher Pramuk

Review Pramuk’s study goes as far as any in outlining the Christology developed in Merton’s copious writings. And by placing Merton in conversation with an eclectic group of theologians, past and present, the book succeeds in underscoring Merton’s Christology and his understanding of the wisdom tradition. A new generation of Merton enthusiasts will appreciate both the effort and the result.CommonwealChristopher Pramuk masterfully guides the reader into how Merton’s life was transformed by his dialogue with both the Russian and Eastern mystics. Just when one thinks that enough has been written about Merton, that there is little more to be said, then here comes another gem that deserves serious attention. Bishop Robert F. Morneau, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay I love this book. Pramuk’s writing is at once deeply insightful and beautifully poetic. . . . It marks a fresh new insight into the depth of Merton’s theological vision.Catholic StudiesPramuk’s Sophia stands out as an exemplar of the best of what scholars of Merton can offer. . . .The book is a reflection on the nature of theology and a call to the renewal of the practice of theology through the sophiological approach. As such, it should be of interest not only to those interested in the retrieval of Merton’s ideas and in the reconstruction of his monastic, theological, and personal identity, but also to those who remain convinced that theology still has something important to say in response to the most pressing questions that we face today.American Benedictine ReviewThis book will appeal to those who give it slow study and reflection. It is prayerful and mystical as well as being a finely documented academic study. The language is beautiful and engaging; one emerges from even a few pages feeling inspired and energized. ‘Ah—so that’s what we believe and why we are Catholic!’ one might conclude with pride and hope.LeavenPramuk has written an audacious, radical and ultimately inspiring book. Audaciously, he takes on the complex and controversial task of translating Merton’s richly literary and poetic writings into theology. In doing so, he calls Christians, and especially Christian theologians, radically to deepen or repossess the mystical sources for their life and work. The result is an inspiring invitation to find new and deeper meaning in both doctrine and practice.Theological StudiesPramuk has jumped to the head of the pack and become one of our premiere theologians. . . . This book traces the emergence of Sophia in Merton’s life and writings as a love and a presence that breaks through into the world—a living symbol and name through which he encountered the living God and with which he chose, at his poetic and prophetic best, to structure theological discourse.National Catholic ReporterChristopher Pramuk’s Sophia: The Hidden Christ of Thomas Merton, is nothing less than a gift to Merton scholars, serious theologians, and contemplatively-minded Christians alike. . . . [It] represents a new starting point in Merton studies. There is no doubt that Pramuk’s book deserves and will receive significant attention. The Merton Seasonal

Kovacs After reading Merton's biography, I was especially intrigued with his prose poem "Hagia Sophia" and was sad to find that there was not much further information available regarding this "secret" work, as Merton characterized it. With the publication of this astonishingly good book, that is no longer the case. The author Christopher Pramuk delves into the heart of Merton's mystical approach to theology, places it within the context of the Church's tradition, and shows us why it merits sustained consideration in the Church today. While thorough scholarship is evident throughout, it is definitely not a dry read as it imaginatively takes us through lessons from Newman and Heschel as well as the Russian theologians Soloviev and Bulgakov. This book powerfully conveys to the reader the reality of the "sacramental imagination" as experienced by Merton and reminds us that the forms which guided him on the journey (scripture, liturgy, iconography, sacred music, poetry, theology) are there to guide us too. For help along the way, you couldn't ask for better companions than Merton's writings and this book. It is an astounding gift to those who truly wish to live hidden in Christ.

Marshell Jr. There are many fine books available about Thomas Merton: The "official" biography by Michael Mott entitledThe Seven Mountains of Thomas Merton, William Shannon's Silent Lamp: The Thomas Merton Story, and Basil Pennington's more personable reflection in Thomas Merton: MY BROTHER. All these titles have their merits and insights into one of the most interesting spiritual writers of the 20th century. But like most biographies, their overriding concern is chronology and narrative; they dwell briefly or only sketch Merton's intellectual life and theological interests. Finding books that discuss Merton in depth is harder to do. If you seek a more analytical and critical investigation into Merton's thinking, I would recommend Christopher Pramuk's fine effort to investigate Merton's Christology. One of the great myths of Merton's life concerns his interests in Buddhism and Taoism. You can still meet people who think Merton was going to renounce Christianity and become Buddhist, and that his travels to Asian countries indicates a break in his life with Christianity and his monastic community. Pramuk's book clearly illustrates that Merton had from the middle 1950's until his death firmly grounded his spiritual life in patristics and the Russian theological tradition, and that Christ, not Siddartha Gautama, was the focus of his spiritual interests. His deep interest in the Sophiological tradition and his readings in Bulgakov, Evdokimov, Soloviev, as well as his relationship with Boris Pasternak are reviewed and examined in some detail by Pramuk and reveal a monk immersed in his Christian theology, not simply an intellectual understanding, but a well integrated and dynamic interaction with Wisdom found in the Trinity and reflected in the world. This theological growth coincided with Merton's growth as a poet and produced the prose poem "Hagia Sophia." Until I read Pramuk's book, I did not fully understand the significance of this somewhat odd piece in the Merton corpus, but his skillful investigation makes clear that it reveals much of Merton's thinking and should not escape the attention of those wishing to understand Merton's Christianity and inner life. Though there are theological issues with the Sophiological tradition (How orthodox is it?), Pramuk explores these concerns and finds Merton was pretty good at maintaining a sound theological footing despite the pitfalls. My criticism of the book? Pramuk's writing style is a little "heavy" and geared for the educated reader, not the sort of writing a casual Christian can warm to. If you are not well versed in Merton, don't buy this book until you have become more familiar with him. Sometimes Merton gets "hidden" in Pramuk's efforts to analyze him. Pramuk can cite and quote theologians as diverse as David Tracy, Cardinal Newman, and Abraham Heschel in the course of a few pages. There is also an incompleteness to Pramuk's analysis, and despite the many theological references, Pramuk appears to have little concern for genuine influences in Merton's evolution that mirror the Sophiological tradition. Notably, Pramuk neglects English Romantic poets and the Franciscan spiritual tradition, both of which Merton was well versed. A good book to reference in this regard is Ross Labrie'sThomas Merton and the Inclusive Imagination. Though it is an academic work as well, Labrie, I think, does a much better job for the general reader in revealing Merton's intellectual influences. Also, Merton's interpretation of Evagrius' theoria physike could have been a little clearer, and I think the Pennington book cited above may provide a better explanation of Merton's understanding of this concept. Pramuk also delves into Merton's "robust doctrine of the 'true self,'" but I felt that the uninitiated reader may not fully understand its importance. There is a book (I think now out of print) by Thomas King,Merton: Mystic at the Center of America (Way of the Christian Mystics), that disusses Merton's concepts of the self and could really be helpful in this regard.Pramuk's study is as much a literary analysis as it is a theological investigation, and you will find some interesting insights into Biblical interpretation, hermeneutics, and symbolism. Overall, a good book if you are ready for it.

A masterpiece of the soul By Robert Miller Over the course of almost thirty years-teaching, within my home parish, about the adult christian faith journey-I have read many books by and about Thomas Merton-some I have read twice. Recently, I finished 'Sophia' for the fourth time and know there is so much more I have yet to grasp within the pages of this masterpiece of the soul. Once again, as Merton and Pramuk have stated, I am reminded that one must 'live one's theology' if you seek to understand it. 'Sophia' sends you into the depths of the world, and in doing so, discover the gentle embrace of the humble Christ all around you, hidden in plain sight.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Brady Buchanon had planned his escape well. Three more minutes and he was out of here for the day.He hurriedly tossed his tools into the back of the work truck, eager to be gone. Man, he loved this time of year! Cool, crisp and clear weather, and Christmas practically dripped from the trees. He clicked the locks on his royal blue F-350, waited for Dawg, his faithful mutt to leap into the seat and was about to climb inside himself when his father, owner of Buchanon Built Construction Company and, by all rights, Brady's boss, stepped out into the late November day."Brady, hold up."Not fast enough. Brady blew out a resigned breath. He leaned a hand on the truck top and waited, though not at all patiently."Been meaning to talk to you about something.""Sure. What's up?""This makeover thing you do every Christmas, better cancel this year."The request sailed right over Brady's head. "Too late. I already have the recipient lined up."Dan Buchanon, his salt-and-pepper hair hidden under a Buchanon Built ball cap, scratched at the side of his neck. "You've made the announcement?""On my way there now. Dad, you should see this house. It's bad, but Buchanon Built can make it shine." Donating a home makeover for one needy family each Christmas was Brady's favorite event of the year, and the publicity was great for business, an important consideration to his father."I appreciate the sentiment, son, and in years past didn't mind the lost time and expense but not this year. We need all hands on deck.""I can work it out. Don't worry. Buchanon projects won't suffer. The guys who volunteer can work on the makeover on their downtime or when things are slow."But Dan was shaking his head. "With all the work on the schedule and the slowdowns we've encountered, you don't have time for charity. We don't have time for charity. Jaylee just told me you still don't have a plumber lined up for the Edwards project.""I'm working on it."Irritation flashed on Dan's face. "And you want to pull off six paying jobs for a freebie? Forget it, Brady. Forget it. And fix the plumber problem today. No more delays. No more excuses."Brady's blood heated. He held his temper in check better these days, but no one worked him up like his dad. And vice versa. "I'm doing my best."His father's thick jaw clenched. "I don't want your best. I want the problem solved.""It's not as if I haven't tried." Leaving the truck door open and the dog in the seat, Brady pushed away from the vehicle to face his father. He spread his hands in a plea. "Be reasonable, Dad." Like that was going to happen in this lifetime. "Jack Taylor had a heart attack. The man can't work." And the plumbing problem had nothing to do with Brady's home makeover."Then get someone else."Brady didn't believe in kicking a man when he was down. "Jack's business needs the work. And he's the best plumber around.""And we need to bring this project in on time or lose a boatload of money. The vandals have thrown us behind on everything and now subcontractors decide not to show up. Buchanon Construction was built on dependability and speed. If Jack can't work, find someone who can. Spend your time on business, not on some feel-good Christmas project."Brady stifled an angry retort. He had places to go and much more enjoyable things to do tonight than get into another fight with his father. A plumber who'd had a heart attack didn't "decide" not to work. The choice was out of the man's hands."I'll talk to Jack's wife first thing in the morning." Mary Taylor was busting tail trying to keep the small plumbing business going while taking care of her ailing husband. Good plumbing temps were hard to come by. He should know. He'd called plenty, though telling that to his father was a waste of good clean Texas air."Tomorrow isn't good enough." Dan stacked his hands on his hips for emphasis. "I want plumbers on the job site by six in the morning to fix the problem." He jabbed a finger toward Brady. "See her now. Tonight. And don't take no for an answer. Understood?"Brady took a step back, fuming, his back teeth tight enough to crack."Right. Sure. The job will get done." Brady always did the job, but his father seldom noticed progress. He only noticed the problems. As if his demands were law—which they sort of were— Dan spun away and slammed the office door behind him. The sound reverberated in the formerly pleasant evening.Adrenaline jacked to ninety, Brady dragged a frustrated hand down his face. Another minute and he would have been gone. Another minute and he could have gone through an entire work shift without letting his father get under his skin.He was six inches taller and fifty pounds heavier than Dan Buchanon and had been the foreman at Buchanon Built since graduating Texas Tech eight years ago, but his father still managed to make him feel as insignificant as sawdust.Brady turned back to the truck, where Dawg sat behind the wheel as if he was about to drive away. The comical picture erased some of Brady's frustration. "You driving?""Can't. He doesn't have a license."Brady pivoted toward the voice. Dawson, one of Brady's three brothers and the dimpled twin to Sawyer, ambled around the end of the warehouse, tool belt bouncing against his hip like a gunslinger."Don't let Dad ruin your day. He's been in a meeting with Marilyn Tenbears for the last hour and a half.""That explains it."Marilyn Tenbears owned a strip of woods along Gratitude Creek that Dad was determined to purchase. Marilyn was just as determined to either get rich from the sale or keep the land."He thinks I should shelve the makeover."Dawson unhooked his tool belt. "I heard. But weren't you planning to tell the recipient tonight that her home had been chosen for the remodel?""Still am. In fact, I'm heading over there now. Want to come along?""You're still going to do it?""That's the plan."Dawson cast a concerned glance toward the office door. "What about Dad? How will you get this past him?""I'll think of something. He'll come around.""He doesn't like his orders to be ignored.""Dad never likes anything I do, but I get the work done.""That's because Buchanon Built has flourished with you as foreman in a way it never could with Dad in the role. He was too harsh with subcontractors."Brady huffed. "No kidding? Dad? Harsh?"The brothers exchanged a chuckle."Hop in, Dawson, my man." Brady popped a palm against the roof of his truck and slid into the driver's seat. "Santa Claus is about to do his thing.""What about the plumber?""I'll worry about him later."With an amused shake of his head, Dawson shucked his tool belt and climbed into the big Ford with his brother, relegated Dawg to the backseat, and slammed the door. "No wonder you and Dad butt heads. Who is this year's beneficiary of a Buchanon Built makeover?""Abby Webster. You know who she is. She works at the Buttered Biscuit.""Yeah." Dawson turned an interested face toward Brady. "I know who you mean. Good waitress, all business and not too smiley or talkative but remembers exactly how I like my eggs and coffee." He put the edge of his hand at nose level. "Up to here, pretty tall with long brown hair she wears in a ponytail over her shoulder. Right?"Brady glanced from the road to his brother. "Tall? She's not tall.""Compared to you she's not tall. Compared to other women she is."Brady conceded a truth he had to live with and really didn't mind all that much. He was some kind of genetic throwback to his giant Celtic ancestors, both in looks and size. Even his rust-brown hair, which he clipped short, was out of sync with the rest of the family. Dawson, on the other hand, was so black-hair-and-blue-eyed pretty, he belonged on the cover of a magazine. Not that Brady would tell his manly little brother he thought he was pretty."Did you know she has a little girl with some kind of handicap?""Like I said, Abby Webster's not much of a talker. Brings my food and skitters away." From the backseat, the dog poked a cold nose in Dawson's neck. Dawson gave him a gentle shove. "Stay in the back, fella.""Wait until you see this place, Dawson." The enthusiasm Brady had for the Christmas project bubbled up inside him. "Abby and her little girl need this makeover badly. The house is run-down, shingles missing, windows cracked, no handicap accessibility. She's going to be thrilled.""How do you find out this stuff?""I ask. I look." Truth was, he drove all over town looking at houses. "People tell me.""That's because they know you're a soft touch like Mom.""To whom much is given, much is required.""That's Mom's favorite verse.""Yeah, well, she's right. Giving back is the right thing to do, and it feels pretty good, too, especially at Christmas." And nothing made him feel as worthwhile and as necessary to the planet, especially after a run-in with his critical father. "I'm not backing out no matter what Dad thinks.""What if he pulls the powerful Buchanon rug out from under the project? You need the company to make this happen."Brady hadn't had time to think that far, but he couldn't deny the possibility. When Dad was crossed, he could be a tough customer. But Brady had made up his mind. One way or the other, Abby Webster was getting a home makeover. And he couldn't wait to see how happy she was when she heard the news.* * *Gabriel's Crossing, Texas, was the kind of place where few people crossed the railroad tracks into "that" part of town unless they lived there.Abby Webster and her daughter lived there.Legs aching from the twelve-hour shift at the Buttered Biscuit and delighted to be heading home, Abby encouraged her exhausted old CR-V to travel the distance from the Huckleberry Play School to the sagging house on Cedar Corner. Anyone could find her house without the number—something that had been missing far longer than Abby had lived there. Hers was the house with duct tape over a crack in the front window and the cheery crayon drawings of blue and red angels hanging next to the crack. Her four-year-old had a thing for colorful angels.Abby parked in the driveway, a strip of blacktop with dead grass poking through the cracks. "Out you go, jelly fingers."Her daughter, the joy of her life, giggled from her car seat. "I'm hungry.""Imagine that, Lila Webster is hungry." Abby hopped out of the car and went around to the other side. She opened the door and unbuckled her daughter's seat belt. "How about a peanut butter and broccoli sandwich?""Ew, Mommy."Smiling into her child's chocolate-colored eyes, Abby lifted the four-year-old into her arms, thankful Lila was still small. Hopefully, by the time Lila was too big to carry, they could afford a house with the space for her special equipment. Or just maybe Lila would be walking on her own without a walker or wheelchair. Such possibilities existed and Abby would never give up hope that the mild function in her child's spinal cord would continue to develop."Okay, then, maybe macaroni and raisins?"Lila cocked her head, a tiny frown between dark eyebrows as she considered the combination. Then, her face lit with enthusiasm, she said, "Okay!"Marveling at the precious gift of her child, Abby juggled Lila and her keys to unlock the front door and bump it open with her hip. Raising a child with special needs wasn't easy, but Lila's undaunted spirit and joy in living made everything worthwhile. What other child would react with such pleasure to a meal of macaroni and raisins?"Were you a good girl at school today?""Yeth.""Did Gerry say mean things to you?""He was nice."Abby breathed a sigh of relief. Some kids didn't understand why Lila was different. While most didn't seem to mind that Lila wore braces and didn't walk normally, some were downright cruel at times.Dropping her keys on the table, Abby set her daughter on the love seat with the ever-present crayons and paper and went to the kitchen to create another macaroni masterpiece. The pasta was on to boil when Lila called, "Somebody's here, Mom. In a big, big car."Abby heard the rumble of an engine and identified the big, big car as most likely a truck. Hmm. She hadn't ordered anything through UPS."Not expecting guests." She went to the side window and peeked out at the graying evening. A bright blue pickup had pulled into the driveway behind her Honda."Who in the world is that?"Lila, busy with another of her art projects, didn't look up. "I don't know. Maybe Santa Claus."Abby smiled, though the statement squeezed her chest. This year was the first time Lila was old enough to really get into the idea of Santa Claus, but Lila's medical expenses kept their small budget strained to the breaking point. Lila wouldn't notice the small size of the Christmas gifts under the tree, but her mother would."Too early for Santa, so I don't know who…" Her voice dwindled away as two gorgeous males exited the gleaming blue truck and sauntered up her drive. They looked familiar and they had to be brothers. Though one was half a foot taller than the other, their strides matched and they swung their arms with identical confidence as though the world was their oyster. With looks like those, it probably was."Oh, my." As they came closer, she recognized them. Buchanons, two of the four sear-your-eyeballs-gorgeous brothers.Abby opened the front door as the men stepped upon her wooden porch. A weak board groaned and she held her breath, hoping they wouldn't fall through."I don't have home owners' insurance," she blurted. The taller one with swimming-pool eyes tilted his head. She wished she could remember his name. "Ma'am?""The porch," she managed, feeling stupider by the minute as her brain refused to work but her mouth kept going. "Some of the boards are weak. You're big. Don't fall through."Both men dipped their heads to stare at the porch and then exchanged glances. "Needs work.""Don't I know it," Abby said. She stood in the doorway, blocking the entrance and wishing they'd state their business. Buchanons didn't exactly hang out on this side of town and they were letting out expensive heat."That's what we want to talk to you about.""My porch?" Abby poked a finger into her breastbone and then flung out her hand. "Sorry, I can't afford to hire anyone right now.""Oh, no, that's not why we're here," said Mr. SwimmingPool Eyes. "I'm Brady Buchanon and this is my brother. Dawson. Buchanon Built Construction."Brady and Dawson. She could never remember one brother from the other, only that all four were heartthrobs. She did, however, remember their routine orders at the diner. Two gorgeous men on her doorstep was not the norm and she was pedaling fast to figure out why they were here. She pointed to Dawson. "Eggs over easy. And you—" Her finger went to Brady. "French toast and large milk but occasionally the house special."

By Books And Spoons Blog A heartwarming and delightful story about the meaning of Christmas, and the importance of a family and support around us.There's so much to like in this story, first the Buchanon family, the support they give to each other, their generosity and kindness is admirable.Lila, Abby's daughter, is the little angel, and a sunlight to anyone around her. Her sweet spirit, and happy smiles, how she endures all that she has to because of her disability. I love her. It's not possible not to.Abby might come off as a stubborn, prideful, and too independent, but she has a good reason, her childhood, to be the way she is and not to trust people around her. She works so hard to provide to Lila, and to be the best mom she can be. With everything she has gone through, no wonder if she has some self esteem issues.Brady has so much on his plate, helping to run the family company, the recent vandalism on the job sites, but he loves Christmas, and his favorite thing is the makeover. This year, it's different than before, it is personal, and there's something about Abby and Lila, that he just can't stay away from them. This story hit me straight to the heart, it has so much warmth, kindness, and loving care for each other in it. It is the perfect Christmas story, with the reason for the season highlighted, and made clear. I liked how the story unfolded over time, nothing happened too fast, yet, it still didn't seem to move slowly. It puts a smile on my face, and gave all warm and fuzzy feelings, make me look forward to the holidays coming up. Inspiring story filled with joy!~ Five Spoons

Linda Goodnight's inspiring story has arrived just in time for the giving season By Isha Coleman Linda Goodnight's inspiring story has arrived just in time for the giving season. An act of kindness gives two people a chance to create memories, find love and a reason to believe in miracles. Abby has not has an easy time in her life. Pride, determination and hard work are the factors she has lived by for most of her life. A surprise gift comes at just the right time to help get her back on her feet and give her the family she also wished for but never thought she would get. I received an ARC of The Christmas Family by Linda Goodnight in exchange for an honest review.

Heartwarming By Faye Brady Buchanon is the foreman of his family construction company, he's experienced in every aspect of the building process, hardworking, he's always a busy man. Every year he does a home makeover for one deserving family in the community, and he's looking forward to doing it again this year. He's got the fortunate recipient all picked, out be when he shows up with his brother to give the winner the good news, it is Brady who finds himself surprised.Abby Wenster is a single mother, raising her daughter on the tips she earns waiting tables. But her daughter has special medical needs, which means that simple home improvement staples are put on the wayside, as she pays the medical bills and puts food on the table. At first Abby turns Brady down, she doesn't want to take charity, and there are others who need it just as much if not more. But she eventually gives in, for the sake of her daughter.Brady finds his heart captured by Lila, and treats her like any other little girl. I loved how not just Brady, but his whole family made room in their hearts for Abby and Lila, inviting them to stay with them during the construction and welcoming them to their family gatherings.Brady is man of strong faith , who figures out what he wants and goes after it. Abby is from a different side of society, an orphan who never really had anyone to count on but herself.Overall, this is a heartwarming read, just in time for Christmas. I loved the mystery, and the dialog between Brady and Lila, and Abby too. A great book about family and faith at Christmas time.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog.

An explosive, headline-making portrait of Allen Dulles, the man who transformed the CIA into the most powerful—and secretive—colossus in Washington, from the founder of Salon.com and author of the New York Times bestseller Brothers.

America’s greatest untold story: the United States’ rise to world dominance under the guile of Allen Welsh Dulles, the longest-serving director of the CIA. Drawing on revelatory new materials—including newly discovered U.S. government documents, U.S. and European intelligence sources, the personal correspondence and journals of Allen Dulles’s wife and mistress, and exclusive interviews with the children of prominent CIA officials—Talbot reveals the underside of one of America’s most powerful and influential figures.

Dulles’s decade as the director of the CIA—which he used to further his public and private agendas—were dark times in American politics. Calling himself “the secretary of state of unfriendly countries,” Dulles saw himself as above the elected law, manipulating and subverting American presidents in the pursuit of his personal interests and those of the wealthy elite he counted as his friends and clients—colluding with Nazi-controlled cartels, German war criminals, and Mafiosi in the process. Targeting foreign leaders for assassination and overthrowing nationalist governments not in line with his political aims, Dulles employed those same tactics to further his goals at home, Talbot charges, offering shocking new evidence in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

An exposé of American power that is as disturbing as it is timely, The Devil’s Chessboard is a provocative and gripping story of the rise of the national security state—and the battle for America’s soul.

The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America's Secret Government, by David Talbot

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2015: Salon.com co-founder David Talbot’s The Devil’s Chessboard paints a riveting but unflattering picture of longtime CIA chief Allen Dulles (and of his Secretary of State brother, John Foster Dulles) in a nonfiction account covering decades of espionage, questionable tactics, and outright conspiracy. Heaping detail after detail into a dense but fast-flowing account, Talbot has written a book that reads like part Cold War history and part Tom Clancy novel. Both brothers protected the rich and powerful. Both felt they could act outside the rules. Both feared the Soviets and would do seemingly anything to oppose them. Readers will be glad these men are gone, even as they drink up every word written about them. And some will wonder if others have quietly taken their place.--Chris Schluep

Review “A Cold War villain of realpolitik whose successes and blunders were unrivaled. As framed by Talbot, Dulles’s extra-legal interventions, coups, slush funds, and ex-Nazi collaborations were as much pro-corporate as anti-Communist, more Cheneyish than Nixonian.... He’d fit right into our globalized, subcontracted, and hypersurveilled era.” (New York Magazine)“Dulles is unmasked as the backstage manipulator of US policy (foreign and domestic) from the Cold War up to his skillful defense of the highly suspect Warren Commission report. Those who scoff at conspiracy theories might have a change of mind after reading this book.” (Boston Globe, Pick of the Week)“A frightening biography of power, manipulation, and outright treason…The story of Allen Dulles and the power elite that ran Washington, D.C., following World War II is the stuff of spy fiction…All engaged American citizens should read this book and have their eyes opened.” (Kirkus, starred review)“A damning biography—of the CIA’s longest standing director—and an exposé of American politics…. One would be hard pressed to find a book that is better at evoking the strange and apocalyptic atmospherics of the early Cold War years in America.... Neither le Carré nor Graham Greene could do any better.” (Daily Beast)“Offers a portrait of a black-and-white Cold War-era world full of spy games and nuclear brinkmanship.” (Mother Jones)“This year’s best spy thriller isn’t fiction — it’s history…. By the time ‘The Devil’s Chessboard’ eventually climaxes with the events that unfolded in Dallas in 1963, Talbot’s argument that Dulles had both the power and temperament to execute such a plot is more than believable.” (Salon)“A chilling psychological depiction.... The vast surveillance system so dramatically revealed to the world by Edward Snowden could never have come to pass without the culture of fanatical secrecy and habitual lawlessness handed down by Dulles and his loyal agents.” (Justyn Dillingham, Bookslut.com)“This aptly titled book portrays Allen Dulles as the dark prince of the Cold War who manipulated the media, deceived presidents, helped stir up coups... [and might] have been involved in Kennedy’s assassination. Readers who enjoy espionage’s dark history will have a tough time putting this book down.” (Library Journal)“Essential reading, especially for readers with even a passing interest in post-WW2 U.S. foreign policy.” (CounterPunch)

Talbot builds on the now decades-old body of research — initiated by investigative reporters Tom Mangold (“Cold Warrior”) and David Wise (“Molehunt”), and largely developed by assassination researchers James DiEugenio and Lisa Pease (“The Assassinations”) — and adds groundbreaking new information. Talbot focusses extensively on James Jesus Angleton, the shadowy counterintelligence figure at the heart of the domestic assassinations of the 1960s, and examines the inner-workings of Dulles’ ambitious (and dastardly) plot to consolidate and control global political power. “The Devil’s Chessboard” is a startling and revelatory masterwork. In terms of easy-to-access assassination research, this book is second only to James Douglass’ “JFK and the Unspeakable.” In terms of biographies of Dulles and Angleton, two of history’s most infamous figures, this work is second to none.Note: Be wary of one-star reviews for this book. Some trace back to commissioned-review services, the same services that give five-star reviews to shady/suspicious health and beauty products. Go figure.

It's been awhile since I have read a book where I am using so many highlights to be able to go back to pertinent key words and sentences as the material is so rich. I have put down all other books I am reading for this book. It is bound to be a classic I believe. I have a feeling it will do for this subject matter much as James Douglass's 'JFK and the Unspeakable' did for pure assassination research. I was not aware of HOW deep the Dulles/Nazi connection was. The writing style is crisp and to the point. Thank you Mr. Talbot for this wonderful book.

I say again: take with a huge grain of salt any one star reviews, as it is the goal of the "reviewer" to attempt to thwart the sales of this fine book; a common tactic these days. Having said that, I highly recommend this excellent, well-written, and riveting book for both the quality of information on Dulles and the CIA, as well as how brilliantly the author ties together everything into a cogent picture.
